Since their parents died in a car crash, Rashad and Anton have been living with their Uncle George, or maybe he's been living with them, since it was their parents' house. Rashad is 17, a high school senior, working part time to save money for his kid brother "to make it out of here" -- out of their poor black neighborhood in Atlanta. Anton, known as "Ant," sees a faster route, standing on a corner selling drugs for a local dealer.

But no, "ATL" isn't a drug movie, and it doesn't send its characters on a harrowing journey into danger. It's a film about growing up and working, about falling in love, about planning for your future, and about the importance of friends. For Rashad ( Tip Harris ), the best day of the week is Sunday, because that's when he and three friends head for the Cascade, a roller rink where they show off with intricately choreographed moves on the floor.

Rashad's friends are Esquire ( Jackie Long ), Teddy ( Jason Weaver ) and Brooklyn ( Albert Daniels ). They're solid and will last for a lifetime. Esquire, who has top grades, is a waiter at a country club, where he meets the black millionaire John Garnett ( Keith David ). He needs a letter of recommendation to go with his Ivy League scholarship application. Garnett is happy to give him one, and to invite the smart, polite kid to his mansion on the other side of town. And that's when ...

But let's back up to New-New ( Lauren London ). Rashad meets her at the Cascade, they like each other, they start spending time together, and it looks like love. But there is something she doesn't tell him -- although she almost does, before he interrupts her. I'm not going to reveal her secret, except to say that it threatens to sink their romance and their trust in each other. And for a while it looks like it may destroy Rashad's friendship with Esquire.

What this plot outline doesn't describe is the warmth and heart of "ATL," which is about good kids more or less raising themselves. Uncle George is not a bad man, and at 41 he has been a janitor long enough to plead with his nephews to get themselves an education. But when he finds out Ant is selling drugs, his immediate reaction is pragmatic: "We can always use some money in this house." Rashad is a lot more disturbed, and takes action.

But even before that, the movie offers an unusual portrait of the 14-year-old as drug dealer. Yes, he works for a guy with a big, expensive car (the rumbles of the sound system are an advance warning system). But Ant's own job is to stand on a corner, hour after hour, lonely, cold, hungry, scared, not making much money and then getting that stolen. The movie is lacking the false sense of empowerment that sometimes seems to surround drugs in the movies.

Apart from its other qualities, which are real, the movie has a lot of music. The director, Chris Robinson , has made many music videos, and two of his actors are rap artists: Tip Harris records as T.I. (and did a lot of the sound track) and Antwon Andre Patton records as Big Boi. Their music, plus the mix at the Cascade, creates a sound track that drives the movie, especially in the roller-skating scenes, which are choreographed to make the rink look like a magical place. And yes, there is a Cascade in Atlanta and it's is just as popular as it seems in the movie. I know this because my wife is visiting relatives and they took her to the Cascade and she called me half an hour ago and was having a great time. Small world.

The screenplay, by Tina Gordon Chism , is based on a story by Antwone Fisher , and do I have to say, yes, that Antwone Fisher? I doubt "ATL" is as autobiographical as his 2002 film, but it reflects lives of focus and determination; Rashad and his friends are young and sometimes foolish and like to party, but they're also smart and determined to survive and prevail. That's why Rashad can't understand it when ... well, you'll find out if you see the film.

What I liked most was its unforced, genuine affection for its characters. Rashad likes his friends, and so do we. He realizes Uncle George is not a paragon, but Mykelti Williamson has a strong scene where he defends his life from his point of view. He's 41, no wife, pushing a broom, trying to hold a home together for two nephews he didn't ask for, and he's doing his best. I sense that somewhere in the film, if we know where to look, maybe in the support of Uncle George, the friendships involving Rashad, Esquire and New-New, we can find clues about how Antwone Fisher evolved from a kid with a shaky future into a screenwriter with a big one.

Living in a poor neighborhood, orphaned 17-year-old looks after his little brother, bonds (and briefly fights) with his friends through roller skating, pursues his ambition to draw comics; the primary villain (a drug dealer) intimidates the community and eventually shoots one of his workers.

Great movie

What's the story.

17-year old Rashad ( Tip "T.I." Harris ) and his 14-year-old brother Ant (Evan Ross Naess), are orphaned and living with their Uncle George (Mykelti Williamson). Rashad works with George cleaning office buildings at night, trying to put away enough money to ensure Ant gets out of the hood and goes to college. But Ant resents his big brother's rule-making and sees a flashier role model in Marcus ( Big Boi ), who rolls up equipped with fine rims and pitbulls. Rashad works hard, focuses on his gift for comic-book drawing, and becomes infatuated with a pretty girl ( Lauren London ). Rashad's friend Esquire (Jackie Long) is also dedicated to getting out: he attends private school on a scholarship, works at the golf course, and pursues a college recommendation letter from local CEO John Garnett ( Keith David ). Though Garnett has a huge house, he's not quite figured out how to be a progressive father figure, to a mentee like Esquire or his own child. In this, he's similar to George, who's also struggling to look after his nephews. While Rashad sees George as missing the point of parenting, it turns out that both miss the slide Ant makes into Marcus' sphere, until Ant's discovered dealing marijuana at school.

Is It Any Good?

Engaging, bright, and energetic, ATL follows a conventional coming-of-age plot, while also complicating the usual tale of kids coming up in the hood. Rashad's voiceover provides a central-ish point of view, though the film cuts all over the place, including life lessons for his friends and family as well.

While the movie shows a range of ambitions and self-performances, by kids and adults, it doesn't judge them, but considerers how they come to see options. Certainly, Rashad's art gets the most play, but all of them create their own identities through the work they do and the relationships they forge. Sometimes too earnest, mostly complicated, and always generous, ATL never loses sight of this truth, that the kids' experiences and decisions have contexts.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Rashad's fears of commitment and abandonment, owing to the loss of his parents. How does his relationship with his younger brother eventually teach the value of taking responsibility and being honest?

2006 American comedy-drama film by Chris Robinson / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dear wikiwand ai, let's keep it short by simply answering these key questions:.

Can you list the top facts and stats about ATL (film)?

Summarize this article for a 10 years old

ATL is a 2006 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film, and the feature film directorial debut of music video director Chris Robinson . The screenplay was written by Tina Gordon Chism from an original story by Antwone Fisher , and is loosely based on the experiences of the film's producers Dallas Austin and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins growing up in Atlanta , Georgia (ATL). [2] The film is a coming-of-age tale concerning Rashad, played by Atlanta native and hip hop artist T.I. (credited as Tip Harris) in his film debut, and his friends in their final year in high school and on the verge of adulthood. The film also stars Antwan Andre Patton, more commonly known as Big Boi of the hip hop group OutKast , Evan Ross , Jackie Long , Jason Weaver , Lauren London , and Mykelti Williamson .

ATL was the first feature film for its director and the majority of its cast. Filmed in Atlanta, Georgia in summer 2005, many celebrities from the city make cameo appearances, including Bone Crusher , Jazze Pha , Killer Mike , and Monica . ATL received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances and soundtrack, but criticized the direction and formulaic script. It has since become a cult film among the rap community.

Big Rube [ edit ]

  • [voice-over] Pleasure turns to the pain, Of the lessons learned from the strain Of the questions burned in my brain, About whether to love is humane in its touch. These thoughts are like salmon swimming upstream in the tears of your deceit. Fighting the current hurt that kills more than is created by the chaos of our intertwined emotions. Chaotic because the anchor of Eros' arrow has been plucked from the vessel of my undying infatuation. Separation not as simple as the distance between us My mind no longer possessed by the demons that had been the overseers of my enslavement to your lies. The seeds of these lies rooted so deeply they have cracked the foundation of what we once shared. Allowing the faith in us I had sealed inside to gush out like a river, Ripping the image of our future together from my thoughts as violently and as brutally as if it were a child being taken from his mother's arms. I'm left surrounded in darkness but I refuse to be swallowed by it. My loneliness like the night air. Invisible to the eye, obvious to the touch, In its cold uncomfortableness Yet if I could do it all over again, I'd do it in the same skin I'm in. To lay down and let love die, Just stay down and let love lie, No, no, not I. I'll stay 'round and let love fly, Even though I have seen its darkest form, deceit. Nothing else could taste this warm or feel this sweet.

PREVIEW: Disney+’s Atlanta-based ‘Dashing Through the Snow’ stars Ludacris

Prolific Atlanta producer Will Packer had already produced two Christmas family movies over the years: “This Christmas” in 2007 and “Almost Christmas” in 2016.

Last year, Disney was seeking help developing a kids-oriented Christmas film and called Packer for help. He has been brought in before mid-project to shepherd through previous films such as “Ride Along” and “Straight Outta Compton.”

“People usually call me to add some flavor,” Packer told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution earlier this week at the Four Seasons in Midtown. “I felt like this was an opportunity. I thought it had tremendous potential, about a dad who is rejecting the notion of Christmas and has to remember what’s important. I jumped at the chance.”

The result is “Dashing Through the Snow,” a comedy starring Lil Rel Howery and Atlanta’s own Chris “Ludacris” Bridges out Nov. 17 on Disney+. It tries to capture elements of classic films like “Home Alone,” “Elf” and “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Ludacris, best known for his vast library of hip-hop hits and his role in the enduring “Fast & Furious” franchise, plays Eddie, an earnest Atlanta social worker and father of eight-year-old daughter Charlie (Madison Skye Validum) who loves Christmas. Eddie unfortunately bears scars from a Christmas-related childhood trauma that makes him a bit of a Scrooge.

“Luda and I have been talking about working together for awhile,” Packer said. “He’s my guy. We’ve been very, very close friends. I admire his work ethic and skill set as a multi-hyphenate performer but very specifically as an actor. He came in on time, prepared, ready. That is his reputation that precedes him. It was a joy to work with Chris. You really believe him as a dad who has some angst.”

Amid car chases through downtown Atlanta, “Entourage” actor Kevin Connolly channeling his inner Willy Wonka, oodles of glitter sweat and an “Office” alum (Oscar Nuñez) playing a corrupt politician, Packer decided to cast a Black Santa in the form of 43-year-old Lil Rel Howery. Packer had previously given Howery a smaller role in 2020′s “The Photograph.”

“I thought he would be great because he has such a whimsical nature on the screen,” Packer said. “Santa has a glint in his eye, which I love because kids respond to that. That glint says it’s going to be fun, something magical. He has that type of persona on screen.”

One notable trademark of Howery’s version of Santa is his Oreo-like black-and-white beard, which is directly addressed in the movie. “We wanted Santa to have a little flavor and swag because it’s a Lil Rel Santa,” Packer said. “This is not your granddad’s Santa. That beard is part of that swaggy feel.”

The film focuses around Eddie trying to help Howery’s Santa, thinking he’s a delusional mentally ill person, not actually St. Nick. In the meantime, a set of bad guys are chasing Santa down for an errant iPad.

Credit: Steve Dietl

This is the first time Packer has done a Disney movie and he was given a generous budget to make it happen. “It was exciting,” he said. “Disney is a global brand. They’re known for doing things at the epitome of quality. We knew we had to live up to that standard. They gave us the tools that we needed.”

Indeed, Packer’s favorite scene focuses on peeved, realistically rendered Santa reindeer taking down the bad guys.

“I just love this idea where you get to see the reindeers kick some butt,” he said.

In all, this was very much a movie set in Atlanta. “It’s fun to shoot Atlanta for Atlanta,” Packer said. “When my Atlanta folks see the movie, they’ll smile and recognize places.” Among the most obvious backdrops for long-time locals: the High Museum of Art and the exterior of the former Rich’s department store downtown.

And as is often the case, this movie may have been fictionally at Christmas but was actually shot in August and September of 2022 when daily high temperatures often exceeded 85 degrees.

“You can’t control when you shoot largely,” Packer said. “You have to shoot when the actors are available, the script is ready and you have the green light. Things are constantly changing in this industry.”

Packer had nothing but the deepest respect for Howery, who wore a heavy Santa suit the entire movie sweating buckets.

“I have a scene as an extra,” said Packer, pulling a Hitchcock-like cameo. “I put on the Santa suit for fun. It was so hot and unbearable for a five-minute scene. Rel is a trooper. He did what he needed to do for the movie.”
