After the pandemic, many Kannada movies have been directly released on Amazon Prime Video making it one of the biggest OTT platforms for South Indian Cinemas. Now it has become a tradition to wait for the movie to release on Amazon even though movies are getting released in theatres. From blockbuster Kannada movies such as KGF and Kantara to underrated movies such as ACT 1978, Amazon has everything for you! Here is the list of the top 30 Kannada movies (not in order!) on Amazon Prime.

1) Kantara (2022)

When released on 30th September 2022, nobody expected that Kantara would make this big. Kantara movie once again proved that content is king. Kantara had everything in its basket. The cinematography, Rishab Shetty’s acting skills, Storytelling, songs, and every aspect that is required to be a successful movie. And most importantly the way our culture and traditions have been upheld in the movie.

Kantara means dense forest that has mystical powers. This movie is about the conflict between nature and evil men. Shiva is grown up in a village where they follow Kambala and Bhootha Kola and believe in the supreme power of god. When their rituals and beliefs were questioned by the forest department they fight against the government to save their land. But the leader whom they believed in, betray them but god has his own plans for him. Kantara is a visual treat and one of the must watch movie in the history of Indian cinema.

2) KGF (2022)

Finally they released KGF 2 after the long wait of three and half years. After the success of KGF 1 people were eagerly waiting for the chapter two. It got stretched because of the effects of pandemic on cinemas.

KGF movie is about the Kolar Gold Fields where they mine the gold and every other person on earth wants to be the king of gold. Rocky, a poor orphan guy, is an underdog in the Mumbai who also dreams of KGF. But KGF is not an easy place to enter. However Rocky makes his moves, kills Garuda and takes in charge of KGF. That was the end of Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, Rocky ruling KGF but he has enemies everywhere. Even the government is trying to tackle him. Bollywood people Sanjay Datt and Raveen aTandan have entered the film cast while actor Ananth Nag’s voice has been replaced by Prakash Rai. How will Rocky save his people and KGF? Will KGF 3 maintain its swag when it gets released? We have to wait and see.

3) Yuvarathna (2021)

This mention is mainly because of the love towards Puneeth Rajkumar. This was his last his movie that was released before his dismissal. That is why it holds a special place in the heart of every Kannadiga. Though Gandhada Gudi is officially his last movie but Yuvarathna was released when Appu was still here. Yuvarathna focuses on privatisation of education and the political play behind it. Young principal from a very reputed college goes above his limits to save his college from the privatisation. One thing to mention about the film casting is that you can literally see every artist from the Kannada film industry.

4) Seetharaam Benoy: Case No.18 (2021)

An inspector named ‘Seetharam’ (Vijay Raghavendra in the lead role) gets transferred to a remote village in the Shimoga district. Though it is a very small town, many robberies were going on a day to day basis. When Seetharam takes charge, he notices weird connection between the robberies. When Theives sense of his investigation they kill his wife to send him a message. But that won’t stop him. 5) Rathnan Prapancha (2021)

The Kannada actor Dhananjaya, who is known has Dolly for his villain role in the movie ‘Tagaru’ has finally succeeded to impress audience with his lead role in the movie Rathnan Prapancha. This movie is all about the mother-son bond. Umashree as the mother of Ratnakara has done an outstanding job (as usual!). Ratnakar, son of Saroja gets to know that he was adopted. Though Saroja loves him unconditionally he leaves her to see his biological mother. He searches for her, goes as far as he could, tries to find the connection that could lead him to her while Saroja waits patiently for him to come back. Story of a pregnant woman who fights against all the odds to get her money sanctioned by the government. Before taking this decision she had tried several times to get the money in a legal way but her efforts didn’t work because the authorities ask for a bribe. The movie takes a different twist when Geetha goes against the law. This movie might remind you of the Hindi movie Kahani but both movies are completely different. The film consists of a huge casting including Yagna Shetty, B.Suresha, Pramod Shetty, Achyut Kumar, H.G Dattatreya, Shruti, Sudha Belawadi, Avinash, Sanchari Vijay, and others.

7) Ondu Shikariya Kathe (2020)

He is a famous novelist who has never tortured a single animal or person in his entire life. To keep the promise to his father, one day he takes the gun and goes hunting. A series of events take place and he has to face every odd that comes his way. Not just his but many lives get altered because of his one single decision. ‘Ondu Shikariya Kathe’ means ‘Story of one hunting’. The story may seem slow and pale but it is crafted in a very sensitive way that starts the debate between right and wrong.

8) Bheemasena Nalamaharaja (2020)

Nala Maharaja is a mythology character who is a well-known chef. Director Kartik Saragur used this concept in his movie Bheemasena Nalamaharaja and gave the same name to the film. There are six main characters in the movies representing the six areas of taste. The main actor is the chef in a hotel and the girl who comes to stay in that hotel narrates his love story. The movie has a beautiful twist in the end and that’s what makes the film a must-watch!

9) KavaluDari (2019)

A mystery thriller movie that revolves around the investigation of a murder that happened 40 years ago. K.S. Shyam (Role played by Rishi) digs this case who is a traffic policer to prove himself to his higher authorities. As he starts investigating on his own one leads to another, revealing something big that no one had expected. The story takes interesting turns and makes you glued to the story until the climax. Veteran actor Anant Nag and the talented actor Achyut Kumar have given their best performance in the movie.

When ‘Love Mocktail was released in theatre it didn’t gain much traction because it is made by the newbies in the film industry. During the lockdown, Love Mocktail was released on prime and instantly gained an audience because of the cute love story. Love Mocktail is a simple love story presented in a very simple way but it touches every heart. Darling Krishna and Milan Nagraj are in the lead roles are the makers of this movie and couple in real life. After huge success in Prime, the ‘Love Mocktail’ team decided to re-release the movie in the theatres. Now Love Mocktail 2 is also available on Prime. It is not as good as as the first movie but the way Darling Krishna carried the story, composition of songs, locations shown in the movie are really appreciable.

Mayabazar 2016 is a crime comedy Kannada movie starring Raj B Shetty, Vasistha Simha, Achyut Kumar, Sudha Rani, and others. Crafted on the concept of demonetization, Mayabazar 2016 revolves around four people who cross their path because of money. The story is easily predictable but the way it is presented in front of the audience is quite brilliant.

This movie is the remake of the Tamil movie ’96’ (Though the same movie was remade in Tamil as ’99’). Starring Ganesh and Bhavana, 99 is a beautiful romantic drama that takes you back to your school days and first love. Though they had mutual feelings for each other during school days, they never shared them openly with each other. 13) Maara (2021)

Maara is the adaptation of the Telugu movie ‘Charlie’ starring R Madhavan and Shraddha Srinath. It is basically a Tamil movie but released in Kannada as well. Maara, who flows like the wind attracts every person whom he meets with his kind heart. Parvathy lands in a room that was once occupied by Maara, full of his art and other stuff. She gets impressed with their personality and goes in search of Maara. She meets everyone whom Maara has met, and goes to every place where Maara has been but fails to find him. The story shows the power of true love, greeneries, and locations shown in the movie are feasts to the eyes.

14) Dia (2020)

Dia had a crush on her senior Rohit but fails to express her feelings because of her introverted nature. Fate brings them together again, this time making them fall in love with each other. After announcing retirement from writing, a well-known writer, Lakshmi Narayana Malgudi, decides to visit the place, Malgudi, where he spent his childhood. Another young woman joins him on this journey and they share their stories on the way. Malgudi explains about his first love that happened during school days and how they separated because of the communal tension in the Malgudi village. Now he hopes to meet his love and visit every place in Malgudi that reminds him of his childhood. Vijay Raghavendra has given his best while performing both roles as a young and as an aged man.

16) Birbal Trilogy Case 1: Finding Vajramuni (2019)

One Kannada movie that has tried many latest technologies. It has an 8D song, scribble effect, uses the Roshomon technique and it is the first movie for which VFX has been done in Canada. Birbal Trilogy is a crime thriller Kannada movie that revolves around a murder investigation. One night, a cab driver was murdered on the street while driving his cab but nobody has seen the murderer or the crime. An intelligent lawyer takes this case to help the innocent who has been framed by the police. The movie gets interesting as he opens the case and starts collecting minor details even though there is no evidence or eyewitness.

17) Soorarai Pottru (2020)

Originally in Tamil as Soorarai Pottru, has been released with Kannada audio at the same time. The story of the movie is partly based on the life story of the Air Deccan founder G.R.Gopinath. The movie highlights his struggles to start an airline company exclusively for middle-class families and the financial struggles he faces along the way. Soorarai Pottru is one of ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.

18) Avane Srimannarayana (2019)

Avane Srimannarayana won the best action direction/stunt award at the National Film Awards 2019 . The unique screenplay and the wordplay used in the movie make the movie Avane Srimannarayana worth watching! The story is all about finding missing treasure. A not-so-serious police inspector is in charge of this case and gets involved with the Abhiras while investigating the case. Based on the life story of DK Ravi, Chambal is one of the best Kannada movies that showcase what exactly happened to the deputy commissioner who served in Kolar, Karnataka. When the ‘Gantu Moote’ trailer was released audience became instantly curious after listening to the rich and beautiful Kannada used in the movie. The story is about Highschool teenagers falling in love with each other. The story is narrated from the girl’s point of view, she explains every emotion and feeling in detail. The movie touches the heart with its innocent and detailed narration which is the highlight of the movie. ‘Gantu Moote’ has been nominated for many film awards and won the Best Screenplay Award at the New York Indian Film Festival, thus becoming the first Kannada movie to win at New York Indian Film Festival.

It is the story of three women who had to face life against their wishes because of society’s odds. 23) Krishna Tulasi (2018)

Krishna Tulasi is a romantic Kannada movie with Sanchari Vijay and Meghashree in the lead roles. Krishna, a blind person moves to the new city of Mysuru to pursue his newly acclaimed job. He travels to his work location daily by bus and while doing so he meets the girl Tulasi. They become friends and start sharing their feelings with each other. Krishna hesitates to express his love to Tulasi thinking about his blindness without knowing what Tulasi was going through! 24) Katha Sangama (2019)

Katha Sangama is a Kannada anthology film that is made of seven short stories. The movie is made up of seven directors (One for each story), seven cinematographers, musicians, and editors. Katha Sangama is a tribute to the legendary director ‘Puttanna Kanagal crafted similarly to his movie ‘Katha Sangama’ released in 1976. The first story is ‘Rainbow land’ is about a father who is trying to build rainbow land for his daughter. The Second Story ‘Sathya Katha Prasanga’ is about a retired officer, Third story ‘Girgitle’, is based on the concept of time travel. The fourth story Uttara is about a selfish TV channel editor. The fifth story revolves around ‘Padavaralli’ and the pre-independence era. Sixth story ‘Sagar Sangama’ highlights people’s mentality and judgemental thoughts based on appearance. The seventh story, the most beautiful story from the bunch is about a villager ‘Lachavva’ who gets lost in Bengaluru because of the lack of an address.

1. Thithi ( 2016) – Netflix

Raam Reddy takes great interest in providing textures (ingrained with realism) to the frame and imbuing character details rather than chasing greater narrative aspirations. The film does have a central familial turmoil and a string of conflicts. But what Raam wants us to witness is simplicity and purity of character. Thithi may seem a bit hollow for those expecting broader realization of narrative conflicts. The film is anything but hollow. I am not saying the film’s form is utterly flawless. There might be few unsatisfying aspects. But it takes no didactic approach to comment on the inbred patriarchal issues or other social issues, common in Indian villages. That’s what makes Thithi more profoundly layered.

2. Uturn (2016) – Netflix 

The mystery thriller followed Pawan Kumar’s highly-acclaimed psychological thriller Lucia . U-Turn is about a journalist who finds herself in the middle of a series of co-incidental events while on a project about a busy Bengaluru flyover.

The film will amaze you with its brisk screenplay even while going against against many of Indian cinema’s unwritten rules like song sequences.

3. Shuddhi (2017) – Netflix 

Shuddhi  nails the strong female protagonist routine. It tears through all the usual shallow commercial ploys employed in the social justice genre. The movie works its way through the rape-ridden underbelly of India, wherein it establishes itself as a grueling battle between the underdogs and the system that is trying to oppress them.

It resonates with its title as it attempts to cleanse the evils of the world through a representation of the same with dramatic yet grittily realism. The movie wonderfully highlights a journey of both material and spiritual capacity. It paints the town red with its unorthodox plot and flamboyant style which in turn stands in stark contrast to the desolate and bleak cinematographic choice.

4. Kahi (2016) – Netflix

The dark drama revolves around the lives of four youngsters — a dancer, a writer, a drug peddler and a psychopath and the series of events that threads them together in the end.

The end is left pretty open for the audience gasping for breath already, to think over and interpret themselves.

One of the best Kannada movies online right now, Kahi was also helmed a debutant director (Aravind Sastry). But it couldn’t, unfortunately, sustain at the box office like other unconventional films of 2016, despite winning critical acclaim.

5. Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu (2016) – Hotstar

The film which reads ‘wheatish complexion, average build’ in Kannada, named so because of similar ‘missing persons’ announcements made daily on Doordarshan, is about a typical 21st century corporate professional (Rakshit Shetty) who discovers the not-so-ordinary life of his missing father, thereby rediscovering himself while on a hunt for the latter.

Debutant Hemanth M Rao helmed the super hit film, that won veteran actor Ananth Nag accolades for his outstanding performance as a father suffering from Alzheimer’s in the film.

It was also, arguably, the best music album of 2016, with music director Charan Raj’s wonderful compositions.

6. Humble Politician Nograj (2018) – Amazon Prime

Humble Politician Nograj  is a striking political satire that is extremely comical and devastatingly real at the same time. It’s a film that educates the audiences about something that they already have ingrained in their subconscious mind. We all know that politicians are corrupt. But the film just hammers in the point. Moreover, it gives us quite a silly and loveable character as the anti-hero of the film. He is corrupt to the core and funny to the bone. There is no way you can actually hate the guy.

With this, the film takes a jibe at the state of the Indian polity today. Social media politics is mostly fueled by memes rather than debates. Election debates also seem akin to diss tracks rather than logical statements or arguments.  Humble Politician Nograj tries to put all of this craziness in plain view. It tells us that we have accepted such conduct as the norm. Instead of targeting politicians, the film actually scoffs at the audience who stays silent or just laughs off such antics.

7. Katheyondu Shuruvagide (2018) – Amazon Prime

Katheyondu Shuruvagide is a beautifully crafted experience that provides us with visual, auditory and emotional exaltation. The film wants you to sit back and unwind as you witness a touching, real and an emotionally propelled story about two broken people. It takes you along with the two protagonists as you slowly and surely get engulfed in their lives. You soon start rooting for them and wishing that they came together in order to complete each other. 

If you are a big fan of high octane action, then you might not, particularly like this one. This movie won’t give you sudden jolts of excitement. It won’t gut-punch you with a smattering of emotional scenes either. It acts out like a fine beverage, that goes down slowly, but surely pleasures the soul. 8. Rama Rama Re (2016) – YouTube

The film plays around with the complex ideas of life and death – and the dualities created by their interaction. The story follows a convict on death row, who, upon escaping from prison, becomes part of a larger journey. It wouldn’t be wrong to say, that this is a film of dichotomies – between good and bad, life and death, hope and despair. Portrayed subtly, the narrative unfolds simplistically, without any moral undertones or preachy endeavors. With crisp editing and masterful cinematography, every frame is rendered with a unique characteristic quality. Written and directed by D Satya Prakash, the film relies on the strength of its story and music (done by Vasuki Vaibhav), and it delivers well.

9. Mungaru Male (2006) – Hotstar

If you are wondering what makes the sweet plot of Mungaru Male great, it is definitely the splendid cinematography, crisp editing and brilliantly written dialogues. They embellish the story, which revolves around Preetham, a fickle-minded youngster (played by Ganesh) who is navigating his love life. On that journey, he toys with the possibilities of the ephemeral and the permanent, and the film follows him into that tussle.

Starring Priyanka Upendra in the lead role, the film also relies heavily on its star cast, all of whom stay true to their respective performances.

The film begins with a sense of humor, but ends on an emotional note, leaving you with a sad and satisfying feeling in equal parts. The story is narrated while the protagonist Aadi (Krishna) is driving on spectacular roads in the coastal region. There are lots of aerial shots showing the sunlight reflecting on sea water, coconut trees waving in the breeze as Aadi drives with Aditi (Rachana Inder) who is extremely curious about his love affairs. Mayabazar 2016 

Starring Raj B. Shetty, Vasishta N. Simha the movie is a unique commercial entertainer without any single protagonist. With three central characters in need of money, director Radhakrishna narrated a humorous story set at the time of Demonetisation of 2016. Although the movie did not get the deserved attention due to the pandemic, it was a promising drama by the director.

Avane Srimannarayana

The Srimannarayana (Rakshit Shetty) starrer film revolves around a hidden treasure that is lost. A tribe named Adheeras is after the treasure but they cannot find it. Fifteen years have passed and the magnificent policeman Shrimanarayana (Rakshit Shetty) enters the picture and tries to find the treasure. Who is this Srimannarayana? Kapatadhaari 

The movie revolves around a traffic policeman who finds old bones and skulls at an investigation site and decides to dig deep into history and the rest of the movie passes through a series of events that occured on the night of crime. The movie then fasts forward to more than a hundred years, where we see a battle between a forest officer and the local village boy, Shiva, over the subject of converting the local lands into forest reserves. However, Shiva’s friend Devendra, a descendant of the king, has his own plans to acquire the village land for himself, a goal that stands against the pact that the king made with Panjurli.

The other cast members include Rishab Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, Prakash Thuminad, Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty, and Naveen D Padil, to name a few.

While Ben Affleck's acting career has been famously up and down, he's had impressive success behind the camera, and Air is the fifth film he's directed. Starring frequent Affleck collaborator Matt Damon as Nike shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, Air is the origin story of Nike and Michael Jordan's iconic shoe, the Air Jordan.

A whip-smart look at the American Dream from a corporate perspective, Air is the most entertaining movie about business since The Big Short . While it's not expected to see the same awards glory as past Affleck-directed films like Argo and Gone Baby Gone , it's perfect for a crowd-pleasing movie night. And Viola Davis' performance as Michael Jordan's mother Deloris is poignant, heartfelt, and Oscar-worthy.

Smile (2022)

Nothing is more unsettling than a creepy smile, and Smile capitalizes on this fear to the hilt. Smile begins with therapist Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) meeting her patient Laura (Caitlin Stasey) who claims she is being stalked by a supernatural entity in the form of smiling people after witnessing her professor's suicide. Laura then takes her own life in front of Rose, who begins to experience the same occurrences. The best horror movies always have smart social commentary, and beneath its many jump scares and terrifying smiles, Smile has a lot to say about trauma, and it's delivered through some stellar performances, led by Bacon is no doubt on her way to becoming an A-list actor.

Given previous attempts at making a D&D movie have tended to end pretty badly, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves seemed like a roll of the dice that could very well end in disaster. By some miracle, though - which in this case really means the talents of writing and directing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley ( Game Night ) - it actually ended up being a whole lot of fun. Honor Among Thieves is what feels like an increasingly rare fantasy that isn't incredibly serious , violent, and dark, but is instead lighthearted, good-natured, and feels darn good to watch.

There are plenty of Dungeons & Dragons Easter eggs in Honor Among Thieves , but you don't need to know your wizards from your warlocks to invest in this movie. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ' cast is clearly having a great time, and that spreads to the viewer; the main heroes all make you root for them, and the movie does a good job in bringing the spirit of the game to the big screen. It also helps that, in one particular Chris Pine moment, it has arguably the funniest scene of any 2023 movie. Honor Among Thieves may have bombed at the box office, and it's by no means perfect, but it's ideal movie night entertainment on Amazon Prime.

Sicario (2015)

The talent behind Sicario couldn't be more prestigious, and with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan writing the script and Dune 's Denis Villeneuve in the director's chair , the movie does not disappoint. Sicario 's cast is also stacked with some of today's greatest working Hollywood actors led by Emily Blunt as FBI Special Agent Kate Mercer. Mercer joins a government task force looking to bring down powerful Mexican drug cartel leader Fausto Alarcón. While Sicario 's action sequences are thrilling, it's Sheridan's nuanced characters and the stellar actors bringing them to the screen that makes the film such an intense, fascinating watch.

M3GAN (2022)

The pantheon of creepy horror dolls took on a particularly 2020s vibe with Gerald Johnstone's M3GAN , which is part modern Promethean panic and part good old-fashioned chiller. While the eponymous dancing doll was the source of one of the most viral memes of 2022, the movie itself is more than just a gimmick. The horror credentials are front and center, thanks to James Wan pulling producer duties, but M3GAN is also gloriously, self-consciously silly, which more horror movies can afford to be. At least one could be, at the very least, as MEGAN 2.0 has already been announced .

In short, M3GAN is one of the best horror movies of recent times, one of the best additions to the killer doll sub-genre, and a roaringly fun, creepy romp. It was a ready-made cult classic on arrival, but surpassed that thanks to a higher level of success, and it's easily one of the most enjoyable new horror movies on streaming.

Released over 30 years after the original, the sequel was well worth the wait, as Maverick is even better than Top Gun . As Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell trains the next generation of Top Gun graduates, Maverick has better visuals, a tighter script, and sends the franchise soaring into the 21st century with a totally modern update of this beloved story.

Teen rom-coms are rarely known for their staying power, and at first glance, a 71% critics score may not seem good enough to make a "best of" list. But Gil Junger's 10 Things I Hate About You , a modern retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew , has withstood the test of time to become a true classic of the late '90s. The script is unexpectedly clever and far smarter than one might expect of a teen movie. It also served up breakthrough roles for Stiles, Ledger, and Gordon-Levitt, who had previously been only known for his TV work. The chemistry between the cast, and the charm they show, especially the work of Stiles and Ledger, is genuinely delightful, making the Amazon Prime Video offering well worth a watch.

The Prestige (2006)

Writer-director Christopher Nolan has arguably never had a bad movie, so it's easy for a great movie like The Prestige to get lost in the flashier titles in the director's library. Still, the psychological thriller currently on Amazon Prime Video is one of the strongest on his résumé, with one of Nolan's typical all-star casts putting in some all-star work. It's crafted in Nolan's cerebral way, with a narrative that is full of twists and turns that keep the audience guessing, to the point that Christopher Priest, the author of the original novel on which the movie is based, praised Nolan for the clever twists he added. It's all aided by the lush setting of London in the 1890s. While The Prestige isn't quite as bombastic or as much of a spectacle piece as some of Nolan's other films, the tense unfolding of a bitter rivalry grown out of initial friendship is still as gripping as ever.

Train To Busan (2016)

While the zombie horror subgenre was all the rage in the 2000s, fatigue had firmly set in by the 2010s. But Train to Busan proved that quality triumphs over trendiness when it arrived on the scene in 2016. The South Korean film centers on the characters aboard a train who are threatened by the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse. Train to Busan 's confined setting ratchets up the tension , making for some heart-pumping, thrilling action sequences all while delivering smart, subtle social commentary. The movie was so successful that it launched a film franchise, an animated prequel, a 2020 standalone sequel film, and an in-development American-produced adaptation.

12 Angry Men (1957)

Sidney Lumet is recognized as one of the greatest ever directors, and 12 Angry Men is considered one of his masterpieces – the 100% critics score isn't by accident. The movie acts as a counterargument to the Cold War paranoia of the McCarthy era, a direct rebuttal to the hysterical mob mentality that ran rampant through the country during that time. One-setting movies are always a challenge; the character work has to be well-executed and the story has to remain compelling without external dynamics to propel them. The brilliance of 12 Angry Men 's jury room setting is that it organically allows the tension to develop from within as the men – all white men of a certain era who might be assumed to hold the same general views – clash and fault lines begin to appear as the camera angle slowly grows closer. What follows is a master class in how to build dramatic tension.

Gladiator (2000)

Director Ridley Scott has had a long and storied career in filmmaking, and few are able to boast the same number of masterpieces he has under his belt. Among those is Amazon Prime historical drama Gladiator , a movie that was an instantly iconic film the moment it hit screens. As a simple revenge tale, Gladiator is great, but as a broader story about the struggle of the powerless to oppose the boots of those in power standing on their necks, its themes are timeless. Its power is undeniable, and it helped make Russell Crowe a household name, not to mention gained him an Oscar for Best Actor. It's still one of the great action movies and historical epics, and Scott's directorial choices in the movie have only gotten better over time.

Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)

The film adaptation of Red, White & Royal Blue had big shoes to fill, as Casey McQuiston's novel of the same name is a New York Times bestseller with myriad fans who were swept up in the enemies-to-lovers romance at its core. Thankfully, the movie royally delivered. Like the novel, Red, White & Royal Blue centers on first son of the United States Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and Prince Henry of Britain (Nicholas Galitzine), who embark on a passionate romance despite their initial disdain for each other.

The chemistry between the lead couple is make-or-break for rom-coms, and Zakhar Perez and Galitzine's is scorching. Mirroring the novel's success, Red, White & Royal Blue was a massive hit for Amazon Prime Video , becoming the No. 1 video upon release week and seeing a huge surge in membership, which speaks to both the film's popularity and quality.

Interstellar (2014)

It's shocking that Christopher Nolan hasn't won an Oscar yet, and while he stands his best chance yet with Oppenheimer , he would have been deserving with almost any other movie in his filmography, including Interstellar . A word commonly associated with Nolan movies is "mind-bending", and his epic space drama is no exception. Typical of a Nolan movie, Interstellar is stacked with an A-list ensemble including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Matt Damon. McConaughey leads the movie as a former NASA pilot on a mission in space to find a habitable planet as Earth is dying. While Nolan himself received no Oscar nominations for Interstellar , the film deservingly won for Best Visual Effects, and this combined with the thought-provoking storyline makes this one of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Batman (1989)

Tim Burton's Batman is unquestionably the blueprint upon which all modern-day superhero films are built. Its release in 1989 completely changed the way movies are marketed, as well as how a movie's opening weekend box office is evaluated. None of that would have happened, however, without Batman sweeping over audiences who were hungry for something completely new. Now, "dark" comic book movies are common, but Burton's daring reimaging of Gotham City as a gothic Art Deco hellscape full of nightmare circus villains , all punctuated by a poppy Prince soundtrack, showed audiences that the comic book genre could be both serious and camp at the same time. The cat-and-mouse dynamic between Keaton's Batman and Nicholson's Joker is still as compelling as ever, an on-screen pairing that has rarely been matched before or since.

Children Of Men (2006)

The best dystopian sci-fi stories ask the question, " What if... ?", and Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men asks, "What if humans could no longer have children?" Based on P.D. James' 1992 novel The Children of Men , this 2006 movie sees civil servant Theo Faron (Clive Owen) tasked with getting Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), a young refugee and the only known pregnant woman on Earth, to safety. Theo and Kee go on a harrowing journey that is as difficult to watch as it is engrossing, but the movie's overall message of keeping hope alive carries the viewer through. Children of Men appeared on numerous Top 10 lists for 2006 and took home the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film. This is a must-watch for lovers of the genre and cinephiles alike.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Everyone loves a fish-out-of-water comedy, and Legally Blonde is one of the best. Reese Witherspoon is one of Hollywood's most likable actors, and she delivers a winning performance as Elle Woods, the bubbly sorority girl who enrolls in Harvard Law School to win her boyfriend back. The movie starts as a hilarious culture clash between Elle and her snooty classmates , but it soon becomes an inspiring underdog story. For all its laughs, Legally Blonde boldly declares that Elle's femininity and love of fashion aren't reasons not to take her seriously. The movie delivers a strong feminist message while also being an absolute crowd-pleaser of a watch.

Spooky season has come and gone , but good movies are perennial. To paraphrase Gorillaz: November has come, and a whole slew of new movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max, and more have come with it.

This month, we’ve got the Sam Raimi horror thriller Drag Me to Hell and a Michael Bay action-thriller starring John Krasinski on Netflix. Ridley Scott’s medieval action drama The Last Duel starring Matt Damon and Adam Driver comes to Hulu, while Max adds a classic Ernst Lubitsch-directed rom-com starring James Stewart. If that wasn’t enough, our editor’s pick this month is Belly , Hype Williams’ divisive yet transcendent crime drama starring Nas and the late DMX.

Genre: Crime drama Director: Hype Williams Cast: Nas, DMX, Taral Hicks

Hype Williams is one of the most prolific music video directors of all time. With a career spanning as far back as the early ’90s, the graffiti artist turned filmmaker has worked with some of the most genre-defining acts in hip-hop, from A Tribe Called Quest to Outkast, carving out the prevailing visual language of rap videos through his characteristic blend of canted wide-angle shots, stark saturated lighting, and slow-motion transitions. Belly , his feature debut (and only film as of this writing), is a synthesis of all these elements, resulting in a movie that taps directly into the zeitgeist of hip-hop’s mainstream ascendance.

Nas and DMX co-star as Sincere and Tommy “Bundy” Brown, two young street criminals who make their living sticking up rivals and dealing drugs in a hallucinatory version of New York. As Bundy climbs way up through the criminal underworld, dodging police raids and cutting deals in Jamaica, Sincere begins to have a change of heart, choosing instead to pursue another way of life. Escaping the cycle of violence and iniquity is easier said than done, however, as both men find themselves faced with the consequences of their past in the pursuit of a better future.

The story, co-written by Williams and Nas, is far from the strongest element of the film. Instead, Belly ’s strengths are found in its visuals, which play out like a hallucinatory montage of music video vignettes sans music, with dark, shadowy silhouettes looming across spacious exteriors and ethereal interiors. The movie was a critical and commercial bomb when it premiered in theaters, but in the decades since has grown into a cult favorite among audiences for its audacious aesthetic and a star-making performance from DMX, who at the time was mere weeks away from releasing the second of his first two Billboard 200-topping albums. Belly is a genuinely fascinating time capsule of late-’90s experimental filmmaking that’s well worth experiencing. —Toussaint Egan

Genre: Supernatural horror Director: Sam Raimi Cast: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver

Sam Raimi, the horror master behind the Evil Dead series, hasn’t really made a horror movie since this underrated 2009 masterpiece, but thankfully it’s now on Netflix for you to discover.

Drag Me to Hell follows Christine (Alison Lohman), a woman trying to get a promotion at her bank job by denying a woman a loan extension on her house. Instead of impressing her boss, however, Christine is attacked and cursed by the woman, causing an evil entity to follow her around tormenting her.

Raimi’s movie is a deliciously mean little parable about why you should never let self-interest get in the way of helping people when it’s in your power. In typical Raimi fashion, it’s joyfully cruel, with a playfully malevolent and sinister spirit at its center that makes the whole movie a ton of creepy fun. —Austen Goslin

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Genre: Military thriller Director: Michael Bay Cast: John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, Max Martini

Listen, I get it. When this movie came out in 2016, the last thing on Earth I wanted to do was watch a Michael Bay movie about Benghazi. Turns out, I just wasn’t ready for it.

13 Hours is a tense tactical military movie about soldiers defending an American diplomatic compound in Libya. The cast is very game – John Krasinski is fine in the lead role, but character actors James Badge Dale, Max Martini, and Pablo Schreiber all excel in supporting roles — and it’s one of the best displays of Bay’s technical mastery of the medium and genre.

The movie just looks so good. It’s Bay’s best digital work, shot by Dion Beebe ( Miami Vice ) with crystal-clear colors and sharp sunlight amid the chaos of the assault. The sounds are intense and immersive, too (deservedly earning a Sound Mixing Oscar nom). It’s an incredible technical display that feels in conversation with the chaos of Sam Peckinpah movies.

At the end of the day, 13 Hours isn’t for everyone. The source material does make the movie uncomfortable at times, especially the remove it has in relation to the Libyans who actually live in Benghazi. But there is a core of sadness to the movie — Bay’s sympathies lie with individuals, not with the military industrial complex or its aims — if you’re willing to look for it. — Pete Volk

The last duel.

Genre: Historical drama Director: Ridley Scott Cast: Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer

Apparently this month I’m just picking unfairly maligned movies of the past decade. Ridley Scott’s medieval Rashomon was my favorite movie of 2021, and now that it’s on Hulu, maybe you’ll give it a fair shot, too.

The Last Duel unfolds over three perspectives: A pompous buffoon of a knight (Matt Damon), his smarter wife (Jodie Comer), and the squire accused of raping her (Adam Driver). Each shows the events that lead to the duel from their perspective, as Ridley Scott and screenwriters Nicole Holofcener, Damon, and Ben Affleck deftly adjust major and minor details to show how different people perceive different events — without ever falling into he-said-she-said trap. It’s a delicate balance, and one the movie handles with aplomb.

The duel is fantastic, as is an early battle sequence where Scott gets to bring out some of his old Gladiator toolkit. There’s also Affleck’s delightfully, ridiculously over-the-top performance as the count to whom Damon and Driver’s characters swear allegiance to. It provides some much-needed comic relief in what can be a very dark movie. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, impeccably crafted movie for grown-ups, you can do a lot worse than The Last Duel . — PV

The Shop Around the Corner

Genre: Romantic comedy Director: Ernst Lubitsch Cast: Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Frank Morgan

For a lot of people, November means the start of the Christmas season. Why not ring it in with one of the best Christmas movies ever made?

From the masterful Ernst Lubitsch, this romantic comedy follows a salesman (James Stewart) and a new employee at his shop (Margaret Sullavan), who can’t stand each other. They get in frequent arguments at work, and the only thing that keeps them going through their misery is a secret love they anonymously write to — each other.

Later made into You’ve Got Mail (and In the Good Old Summertime , a Judy Garland musical), the original is the best version of this story. It’s endearingly sweet, uproariously funny, and a Christmas classic for good reason. If you grew up with the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan remake, do yourself a favor this holiday season and watch the James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan edition. — PV

Master and commander: the far side of the world.

Genre: Period war drama Director: Peter Weir Cast: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D’Arcy

Sometimes you just feel the urge to step away from your keyboard, put on an admiral uniform, and set sail on a big wooden ship to shoot cannonballs at pirates and sing sea shanties. Who among us has not felt, at one time or another, enchanted by the siren call of the ocean?

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World speaks to this yearning for high-seas adventure, delivering a blockbuster naval period piece anchored by a pair of terrific lead performances courtesy of Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. Hunting the French privateer vessel Acheron, Captain Jack Aubrey (Crowe) and his crew must weather the dangers of their prolonged voyage in order to seize victory on behalf of king and country during the height of the Napoleonic Wars. If you’re looking for a grown-ass movie for grown-ass adults, Peter Weir’s epic nautical war drama is the film for you. —TE

What's new on Prime Video in November

Note:  These descriptions are taken from Prime Video press releases and lightly edited for style.

• Invincible, season 2 premiere (2021- ) : Superhero series. The first season revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson, who's just like every other guy his age -- except his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet.
• 007: Road to a Million, season 1 premiere (2023- ) : Reality competition series. It sees contestants competing in teams of two on a global adventure to win the ultimate prize of up to £1 million ($1.2 million).
• Twin Love, season 1 premiere (2023- ) : Reality dating series. Ten sets of twins will be split up and placed into two houses, creating identical casts. Once settled, they'll begin a search for love.
• Amar é Para os Fortes, season 1 premiere (2023- ) : Drama series. It tells the saga of two Black women from Rio de Janeiro who see their fates intertwined forever during Mother's Day.

Gen V (2023—)

Set at Godolkin University, a superhero-only college in the same universe as Prime Video's hit violent and satirical series The Boys, Gen V shifts the focus to a crop of younger supes. Freshman Marie Moreau is determined to keep her head down, but that soon becomes impossible as she and some other students get swept up in a mystery. The spin-off's strong characters and fresh story establish it as something pretty super in its own right. And it's already confirmed to be getting a season 2.

Invincible (2021—)

For those who aren't a fan of cartoons, Invincible could be your converter, up there with other adult cartoons like BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty. Based on a comic book from Robert Kirkman, the creator of the Walking Dead, Invincible follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his training to become a superhero just like his father, who happens to be the most powerful superhero on the planet. Episodes run long at nearly 50 minutes, connected into one big, blood-spattered story. A subversive series with a huge cast featuring Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh and J.K. Simmons, Invincible will engross you in its smart animated world.

The Boys (2019—)

The Boys stormed Amazon with its ultra-violent tale of antihero vigilantes seeking revenge against the world's most beloved superheroes. But these heroes aren't what they seem: Their corporate overlords cover up their shady personal lives, including sexual harassment and the odd assassination. With social commentary, black comedy and pops of gore, The Boys takes a thrilling and unapologetic step away from the family-friendly genre.

The Tick (2016-2019)

While The Tick was sadly canceled after two seasons, the superhero comedy will still give you a hit of fast-paced, colorful action with its tongue firmly in its cheek. Based on the comic book character, The Tick is a bulletproof hero who wears a, yep, blue tick suit. His sidekick? The meek Arthur who wears a ... moth suit. Their nemesis is The Terror, a supervillain in their city's underworld. If you want to sit back and watch pure superhero entertainment, you've found the right show.

Riches (2022—)

A soapy drama about a family after the death of their wealthy patriarch sits tantalizingly on Prime Video. In Riches, the will reading goes an unexpected direction, leading Stephen Richard's two sets of children to vie for control of his business. You'll glide through the stylish first season, which includes Ted Lasso Emmy nominee Sarah Niles.

The English (2022)

Gripping Western drama series The English stars Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer as an unlikely duo traveling across a treacherous landscape. The first episode of the miniseries presents some terrible characters and reveals a bit of what motivates both protagonists -- Blunt's aristocratic Englishwoman and Spencer's Pawnee ex-cavalry scout -- to continue in the face of danger. Gorgeous visuals and superb acting make the English worth a binge. 

A Very British Scandal (2022)

Unfurling over three hour-long episodes, A Very British Scandal dramatizes the highly publicized, real-life divorce between the Duke and Duchess of Argyll in the 1960s. Claire Foy, of Netflix's The Crown, and WandaVision's Paul Bettany star.

As We See It (2022)

A newer entry to Prime Video, As We See It earns a spot among its best shows. Starring three actors who identify as autistic, this sincere series follows young adults on the autism spectrum as they navigate jobs, making friends and finding love. Neurotypical actors usually play autistic characters on screen, so the casting sets this one apart. It's also heartfelt, funny and poignant, with well-rounded characters you'll want to root for. I could let the show's glowing Metacritic score speak for itself -- but whatever convinces you, this needs to be your next watch.

The Underground Railroad (2021)

Sublime filmmaker Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) takes on adapting Colson Whitehead's novel The Underground Railroad into a powerful 10-episode series. Set in the southern US during the 1800s, the fictional story follows Blacks attempting to escape from slavery via a network of hidden tracks and tunnels. Tapping magical realism and a superb cast including Thuso Mbedu and William Jackson Harper, The Underground Railroad is an emotional and chilling triumph.

Sneaky Pete (2015-2019)

Con man Marius walks free from jail, only to be hunted by the gangster he once robbed. So, he assumes the identity of his cell mate Pete and walks back into the lives of Pete's estranged family, who are none the wiser. Bryan Cranston brings all the gravitas to gangster Vince in this part-drama, party-comedy. The twists and dicey situations will carry you through the addictive episodes as quickly as Pete pulls his cons.

Informer (2018)

This gripping British series is about, yes, an informer and the murky territory involved in coercing someone to take on the dangerous gig. Paddy Considine (who now has a gig on the Game of Thrones prequel) stars as DS Gabe Waters, a counterterrorism officer tasked with infiltrating a far-right movement in West Yorkshire. Partnered with an excellent Bel Powley (The Morning Show, The King of Staten Island) as the young and inquisitive DC Holly Morten, he attempts to bring British Pakistani Raza (Nabhaan Rizwan) on board to uncover information about a possible terrorist attack. A provocative thriller that will keep you on your toes.

Dead Ringers (2023)

Oscar winner Rachel Weisz plays not one, but two main characters in Dead Ringers, Prime Video's version of David Cronenberg's 1988 psychological thriller. The dark and compelling series follows identical twin doctors pursuing their goal of opening a birthing and research center. Spend some time with these unconventional sisters, you'll want to see the whole thing through.

Chloe (2022)

Led by a stellar Erin Doherty, this British thriller will swallow your attention. It centers on Becky, a temp with an unusual pastime: assuming different identities to sneak into fancy art galleries and yoga classes. When a woman she follows obsessively on Instagram suddenly dies, she attempts to uncover more details, once again posing as someone else. Tear away from your timeline and check out this six-episode limited series.

Homecoming (2018-2020)

While season 2 of Homecoming didn't quite find its feet, season 1 hit the ground running. Julia Roberts stars in this psychological thriller about an army rehabilitation facility run by questionable owners. Using an effective, mystery-building narrative that covers two timelines, Homecoming is high on tension and paranoia as it reveals what the facility's true purpose is. Fun fact: The series uses the  actual  scores of movies from Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and more.

The Man in the High Castle (2015-2019)

The Man in the High Castle imagines an alternate history where the Axis powers (Rome-Berlin-Tokyo) win World War II. Based on a Philip K. Dick novel, the series follows characters in the '60s who live in a parallel universe, where Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan control the US. But there's impossible newsreel footage surfacing of a world where Germany and Japan lose the war, causing some to rebel. To really hammer home its dystopia credentials, The Man in the High Castle is steered by producer Ridley Scott. Fully realized and with a focused plot, this is gripping TV.

The Legend of Vox Machina (2022—)

Buckle up for a new animated series that centers on a group of boisterous, belching misfits called Vox Machina. Based on Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role (you don't have to be familiar with that to enjoy this show), The Legend of Vox Machina sees its protagonists go from being broke bar-hoppers to accepting a mission to stop evil brewing in Exandria. We're further introduced to the characters in a musical number that occurs about halfway through the first episode. That's right, I said musical number. But you'll be down for every element this show throws at you. Why would anyone choose these misfits to fight for the kingdom? "Well... they do have a bear," one royal decision-maker concedes.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022—)

Haven't watched Prime Video's buzzy, wildly expensive fantasy series yet? The Rings of Power brings incredible visuals, a sprawling cast and sense of adventure to the streaming service. It's set thousands of years before The Lord of the Rings, and in part follows a young version of the character Galadriel, who's played by Morfydd Clark. 

Forever (2018)

If you're in a particularly meditative mood, reflecting on life, relationships and the big choices we make in life, Forever will gently set your world on fire. June (Maya Rudolph) and Oscar (Fred Armisen) are a married couple cruising through their suburban life until vastly unexpected turns take them into otherworldly territory. Stick through the slow-burning first episode and you'll be rewarded with an exceptionally crafted eight-episode series, gently wrapping you in its visually beautiful and meaningful dream.

Paper Girls (2022)

The first episode of Paper Girls, a sci-fi TV series based on popular comics by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, brings together four kids riding bikes on their paper delivery routes in 1988. While that may sound like a sci-fier you've binged already, (yup, Netflix's hit Stranger Things), Prime Video's show stands on its own. Follow along as the girls travel through time, navigate powerful adversaries and learn more about themselves. Another reason to watch? Comedian Ali Wong is in the cast.

The Expanse (2015-2022)

Amazon rescued The Expanse from the realm of canceled TV, bringing us up to six seasons. Thank goodness it did, because The Expanse is smart sci-fi with realistic characters, high production values and a dash of detective noir. Set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, a conspiracy threatens to start a cold war between the largest powers. A band of antiheroes find themselves at the center. Look forward to more space western themes in the consistently excellent later seasons.

The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022—)

If a coming-of-age tale with a peak summer setting, teenage love triangle and soundtrack stocked with Taylor Swift songs sounds appealing to you, keep reading. The show centers on Belly (breakout actor Lola Tung), who makes a much-anticipated annual commute to a beach house with her mom and brother. But she looks a bit different than she did the last time she set foot on Cousin's Beach and spent time with her mom's best friend's sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. Young-adult author Jenny Han wrote the book on which the TV series is based and serves as one of the showrunners.

With Love (2021—)

Looking for love? With Love might be the perfect feel-good rom-com. The charming premise sees the Diaz siblings, Lily and Jorge, navigate major holidays across the year, from Halloween to Christmas -- major holidays that put pressure on singletons in search of romantic relationships. Follow the Diaz's on their journey, along with their delightful and sometimes delightfully awkward extended family. An earnest, enjoyable breeze.

The Pursuit of Love (2021)

You're either going to fall madly in love with or arch an unimpressed eyebrow at this romance based on the 1945 Nancy Mitford novel of the same name. The Pursuit of Love follows two cousins who represent different ways of life. Lily James is Linda Radlett, whose exuberant romantic adventures see her travel from London to Paris. Emily Beecham, meanwhile, is Fanny Logan, navigating the confinements of married life. If you're in the mood, this three-episode miniseries will sweep you up into a story of happiness and sadness, laughter and pain.

The Kids in the Hall (2022—)

Prime Video has resurrected The Kids in the Hall, the Emmy-nominated Canadian sketch comedy show that originally ran from 1988 to 1995. (By "resurrects," I mean the show literally exhumes members of the comedy troupe from a grave they were buried in at the end of the original show. That's just the beginning of the fun.)  Follow the comedians as they freak out over mislabeled desserts, fight over imaginary love interests and write Earth's last fax. But be warned: Some of these sketches are highly NSFW.

A League of Their Own (2022—)

Prime Video's TV series A League of Their Own is inspired by the 1992 film of the same name and introduces new characters portrayed by Abbi Jacobson, D'Arcy Carden and others. In the comedy-drama's first episode, women try out for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the '40s. The show explores themes of race and sexuality, and offers a satisfying period setting and compelling characters.

The Outlaws (2021—)

Seven strangers are assigned to the same community payback sentence in this appealing comedy thriller set in Bristol, England. The six-episode show is fun, dark and touching, offering an engaging look at its rule-breakers' backgrounds and the relationships that form between them. The plot thickens when some members of the group come across a bag of cash. If you need another draw, the show is co-created by Stephen Merchant, who co-created the UK version of The Office.

Undone (2019—)

This unique series uses the  Rotoscoping animation technique  to tell the story of a young woman who, after suffering a near-fatal car accident, discovers she can manipulate time. Intriguing, right? It gets better: Bob Odenkirk plays Alma's dead father, who enlists her help in investigating his murder. Bending both time and space, Undone is surreal and beautifully existential for those looking for deep material.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-2023)

A '50s housewife who becomes a standup comic? This brilliant series from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, is filled with sparkling performances from Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, with dialogue to match. Set in a vibrant and changing New York, our delightful heroine moonlights as a comedian, while doing her duties as an upper class Jewish American housewife. With impressive visuals, warmth and zingers, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the full package.

A Very English Scandal (2018-2021)

A sex scandal in the UK Parliament? Starring Hugh Grant and Ben Wishaw? You can thank Russell T. Davies for dramatizing this slice of late-'70s British politics. Jeremy Thorpe, a Liberal member of Parliament, wants to silence unhappy ex-lover Norman before his career ends up in tatters. Watch the murder conspiracy, big trial and media scrutiny through A Very English Scandal's darkly funny lens.

Fleabag (2016-2019)

If somehow the Fleabag train passed you by, it's time to let it hit you at its full, incredible force. Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes and stars in the play-turned extraordinary comedy series. A 30-something woman who runs a cafe lives a sex-filled life with a sense of humor that hides the tragedies she hasn't yet come to terms with. Just about word-for-word perfect, with a fourth-wall breaking device, Fleabag frequently does its best to both shock and devastate you, while being ridiculously funny.

Catastrophe (2015-2019)

Featuring Carrie Fisher's final TV role, Catastrophe is a rom-com about messy, chaotic people. Londoner Sharon and Bostonian Rob have a one-week stand that results in an unplanned pregnancy and Rob moving to the UK so they can start a family. The tricky part: Sharon and Rob don't know the first thing about each other. Covering age, sex, parenthood, marriage and love in its open book, Catastrophe is a superb rom-com that gives you four seasons to devour.

Transparent (2014-2019)

Transparent's unique story follows the Pfefferman siblings who discover their dad is transitioning into a woman named Maura. Other aspects of the Pfeffermans' lives, including a sour marriage and a disappointing child, give this tightly scripted comedy-drama a relatable side. Poignant and ambitious, Transparent is a show to look out for.

Mozart in the Jungle (2014-2018)

A comedy-drama set in New York's classical music scene, Mozart in the Jungle is as whimsical as its title suggests. Upcoming oboist Hailey meets eccentric conductor Rodrigo, who's tasked with revitalizing the New York Symphony. Never losing you with jargon, Mozart in the Jungle charmingly reveals an edgier side to the world of strings, playing its own symphony of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.

I Love Dick (2016-2017)

Going on a Katheryn Hahn binge after WandaVision? Marvel's new favorite witch starred in one season of this 2016 comedy with a memorable title. Her character's name is just as memorable: Chris Kraus, an artist and filmmaker who moves to Texas with her husband. She quickly falls in love with his fellowship sponsor, played by Kevin Bacon. Yes, Kevin Bacon is in this. The dynamic of her marriage shifts as her infatuation challenges everything in smart and provocative and adult ways. Sadly, I Love Dick didn't score a second season, but the first is well worth your time.

Documentary

LuLaRich (2021)

In LulaRich, the directors of Hulu's Fyre Festival documentary explore the dark side of multi-level-marketing company, LuLaRoe. The four-part documentary series interviews founders DeAnne and Mark Stidham and paints a not-so-rosy picture of the women's clothing giant, which is known for its loudly-colored and patterned leggings and tops. In the doc, women who joined the company (investing a chunk of money in the process) dealt with stinky merchandise, a toxic culture and challenges reaching financial goals. Settle in for an intriguing and well-made docuseries that spotlights the stories of former LuLaRoe retailers. 

Lorena (2019)

This comprehensive documentary series tackles the story of Lorena Bobbitt, the woman who, famously, severed her husband's penis in 1993. It covers the incident and two subsequent trials, incorporating a wide range of interviews that add illuminating context to the decades-old events. It gives much-needed attention to the abuse Bobbitt said she suffered at the hands of her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt. Executive produced by Jordan Peele, this well-researched series is well worth your attention.

Bosch (2014-2021)

This seven-season police procedural, inspired by Michael Connelly novels, gets everything right for old-fashioned detective drama. We follow Los Angeles police detective Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver, who's haunted by the death of his mother. While catching serial killers and keeping his family safe, he investigates her murder. Functional and no-nonsense, Bosch provides steady mystery with an equally steady lead. Great news: a spinoff series is underway at Amazon's IMDb TV, keeping Welliver as the titular detective.
