If you’ve got a great idea for a new product, program, or service, writing a concept paper is one way to seek funding for it. Concept papers describe the purpose and projected outcomes of the project, and are delivered to potential sponsors. To create a successful one, use clear, passionate language that expresses why your project matters, and who will benefit from it. Above all, show the sponsor that the goals of your project match up with the kinds of initiatives they want to support.

The concept paper will include your proposed research title, a brief introduction to the subject, the aim of the study, the research questions you intend to answer, the type of data you will collect and how you will collect it. A concept paper can also be referred to as a research proposal.

What is the Purpose of a Concept Paper?

The primary aim of a research concept paper is to convince the reader that the proposed research project is worth doing. This means that the reader should first agree that the research study is novel and interesting. They should be convinced that there is a need for this research and that the research aims and questions are appropriate.

Finally, they should be satisfied that the methods for data collection proposed are feasible, are likely to work and can be performed within the specific time period allocated for this project.

The three main scenarios in which you may need to write a concept paper are if you are:

  • A final year undergraduate or master’s student preparing to start a research project with a supervisor.
  • A student submitting a research proposal to pursue a PhD project under the supervision of a professor.
  • A principal investigator submitting a proposal to a funding body to secure financial support for a research project.

How Long is a Concept Paper?

The concept paper format is usually between 2 and 3 pages in length for students writing proposals for undergraduate, master’s or PhD projects. Concept papers written as part of funding applications may be over 20 pages in length.

How do you Write a Concept Paper?

There are 6 important aspects to consider when writing a concept paper or research proposal:

  • 1. The wording of the title page, which is best presented as a question for this type of document. At this study concept stage, you can write the title a bit catchier, for example “Are 3D Printed Engine Parts Safe for Use in Aircraft?”.
  • A brief introduction and review of relevant existing literature published within the subject area and identification of where the gaps in knowledge are. This last bit is particularly important as it guides you in defining the statement of the problem. The concept paper should provide a succinct summary of ‘the problem’, which is usually related to what is unknown or poorly understood about your research topic . By the end of the concept paper, the reader should be clear on how your research idea will provide a ‘solution’ to this problem.
  • The overarching research aim of your proposed study and the objectives and/or questions you will address to achieve this aim. Align all of these with the problem statement; i.e. write each research question as a clear response to addressing the limitations and gaps identified from previous literature. Also give a clear description of your primary hypothesis.
  • The specific data outputs that you plan to capture. For example, will this be qualitative or quantitative data? Do you plan to capture data at specific time points or at other defined intervals? Do you need to repeat data capture to asses any repeatability and reproducibility questions?
  • The research methodology you will use to capture this data, including any specific measurement or analysis equipment and software you will use, and a consideration of statistical tests to help interpret the data. If your research requires the use of questionnaires, how will these be prepared and validated? In what sort of time frame would you plan to collect this data?
  • Finally, include a statement of the significance of the study , explaining why your research is important and impactful. This can be in the form of a concluding paragraph that reiterate the statement of the problem, clarifies how your research will address this and explains who will benefit from your research and how.

You may need to include a short summary of the timeline for completing the research project. Defining milestones of the time points at which you intend to complete certain tasks can help to show that you’ve considered the practicalities of running this study. It also shows that what you have proposed is feasible in order to achieve your research goal.

If you’re pitching your proposed project to a funder, they may allocate a proportion of the money based on the satisfactory outcome of each milestone. These stakeholders may also be motivated by knowing that you intend to convert your dissertation into an article for journal publication; this level of dissemination is of high importance to them.

Additionally, you may be asked to provide a brief summary of the projected costs of running the study. For a PhD project this could be the bench fees associated with consumables and the cost of any travel if required.

Concept Paper: Definition and Example

A concept paper is an academic written discourse that explains a concept , often about something that the writer is thoroughly familiar with and passionate about. As you will note in the given example, it is a summary structured to highlight the significant parts of a more comprehensive research. Usually, a concept paper is the preliminary part of an academic research, written to obtain permission to undertake the research project, or to obtain funding for it. Instructional consultation is a basic service to students, and it is an important tool in assessing the relevance of important basic institutional services. However, as perceived by students, a substantial gap still exists between the need for instructional consultation information and the current services being rendered by the school.

The post-modernist, process-oriented concept of education has led to policies requiring educators to take a more active role in the education process. The notion of a dialogic and interactive curriculum where knowledge-creation and negotiation are emphasized is a 21″ century byword, making learning more authentic and meaningful to students. The 21″-century curriculum has been described as one that is generative, outcome-based, and interactive, marked by a meaningful transaction between teacher and student.

Applying for Federal Highway Safety funds begins with registration in the Highway Traffic Safety Subgrant Management System -   https://fdot.intelligrants.com . Registration is submitted by clicking the “New User” button on the home screen or by contacting your agency System Administrator to request access. Selecting the “New User” button with take you to the registration page where you will enter your contact information.

Each organization must assign, at least one, with a maximum of two, Subrecipient System Administrators to coordinate access to the system and submit documents to the FDOT State Safety Office, on behalf of the agency. Subrecipient System Administrators may add access for other agency individuals to edit, view, or submit concept papers. A Subrecipient System Administrator Request Form must be completed and signed by the agency head or delegate to grant authority to allow completion and submission of concept papers. Completed forms should be sent to Juanita Williams at  [email protected]  for processing.

Selection Process 

The State Safety Office reviews all concept papers for compliance with state and federal regulations. Concept papers that comply with these regulations are prioritized using the following criteria:

  • Does the concept paper request satisfy a specific traffic safety need identified by the FDOT State Safety Office?
  • Does the agency making the funding request serve a city/county ranked in the top 40% of its population group for the priority area in which funds are being requested according to the Florida Highway Safety Matrices ?
  • Does the crash data supplied in the concept paper’s “Statement of the Problem” document an existing traffic safety problem? (Citation data and survey results can also be used to document the problem.)
  • How does this request for funding tie into the  Strategic Highway Safety Plan  (goals and objectivities)?
  • If the agency was funded in the past, did it submit reports, invoices, and financial paperwork on a timely basis and implement the activities that were detailed in the subgrant agreement?
  • Does the indirect cost rate requested significantly affect the proposed project’s ability to adequately address the traffic safety need?

The State Safety Office is required by NHTSA to evaluate and document the risk for each entity applying for federal subgrant funds prior to making an award. Each applicant is assessed for risk of noncompliance with federal and State statutes, federal and State regulations, terms and conditions of the subgrant as well as the applicant’s financial stability, quality of management systems, history of performance, single audit compliance, and prior audit findings, if applicable. If the applicant does pose a risk, but the proposal has merit, the State Safety Office may, as a condition of awarding subgrant funds, impose specific terms or conditions. This information is used to determine the appropriate level of monitoring if a subgrant is awarded.

Projects that are ultimately selected should provide the greatest impact to the high crash, high fatality, and high injury challenges that Florida faces. If concept papers are not received from those areas identified as high crash, high fatality, and high injury, the State Safety Office may directly solicit concepts from agencies within targeted high-risk areas.

Once at the website, users can access the system by clicking on the person icon on the top right-hand side of the Signal Four Traffic Safety Dashboard screen. After logging in, the user can click the Menu Icon at the top left corner and select Standard Reports Quick Stats which allows users to filter by date range, geographic area, and/or by law enforcement agency. After filters have been applied, a report will be generated with counts on total crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities for all Highway Safety Plan Emphasis Areas.

Notifications as to whether a concept paper has been selected for inclusion are sent to the head of each agency between mid-to-late September. Agencies that are selected will receive further instructions on how to complete the Subgrant for Highway Safety Funds at that time.

“Leveraging on Mobile Payment Methods to gain Competitive Advantage by local-based businesses”

Introduction Mobile payment methods have popularity with big businesses operating in large towns and cities across the world. These payment methods enable the business customers to access their cash at the point of sale and do not need to have physical money to complete their transactions. This study will therefore help in understanding the mobile payment methods preferences for the local-based business and how and why these preferences have failed to prevail. The research will therefore address that gap that is viewed as the low uptake of mobile payment methods by the local based businesses which are essentially operating in remote areas. This concept builds upon the various insights that have been undertaken by various researchers in the business and information technology field to bridge the gap of strategic implementation of information technology systems in business to gain competitive advantage. Purpose/Rationale It is estimated that more than 5 billion people have access to mobile phone devices and that out of this figure about a third of the population is based in local areas. Further, the village-based businesses do not have immediately access to the physical money banking system as they are located kilometers away. Porter (2011) notes that in order for businesses to achieve and sustain superior performance, they must be able to implement systems that are competitively superior. Budree and Williams (2013, September) and Namada (2018) established that the areas with large number of low-income earners experienced low uptake technological advancements and businesses in these locations are not keen on leveraging on technology. The concept will therefore be intended to identify the salient factors that local businesses can apply in leveraging on mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage. Background Several studies have concluded that mobile payment methods is one of the major factors put in place by businesses in gaining competitive advantage, however this has also, not been achieved in remote areas. As a result, Onyango et al. (2014) in their study on mobile phone technology and the evident performance of micro and small enterprises, concludes that there is an impact on the use and implementation of mobile phone technology to achieve the full business performance. In order, therefore to achieve competitive advantage, Porter (2011) advises that the strategy implemented should be geared towards achieving full potential competitively. Many scholars also agree that there is a significant relationship between mobile payment methods and gaining competitive advantage to sustain an improved performance. Most also argue that the mobile payment method of use will be dependent on the location and nature of need. The handbook by Namada (2018) notes that the concept of organizational learning must be down-trotted to the local businesses to learn which mobile technology suits their operations and how this technology can be leveraged to achieve competitive advantage. The literature and conclusions from the scholars however fail to answer specific questions that related to leveraging on mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage for local based businesses. Most of the studies were focused on businesses and companies in towns and cities with the area of interest majoring on performance whether competitively or not. This study will therefore be focused on the factors of consideration for leveraging on mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local based businesses. Objectives The research paper seeks to achieve its general objective of leveraging on mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by focusing on the following specific objectives: 1. To determine the influence of perceived risks on the use of mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local based businesses. 2. To determine the influence of M-Payment characteristics (mobility, reachability, convenience, and compatibility) on the use of mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local-based businesses. 3. To assess the influence of personal innovativeness on use of mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local based businesses. Hypothesis 1. Does perceive risks influence the use of mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local based businesses? 2. Does M-Payment characteristics (mobility, reachability, convenience, and compatibility) influence the use of mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local-based businesses? 3. Does personal innovativeness influence the use of mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local based businesses? Methodology The study intends to use cross-sectional survey design in determining the leverage on mobile payment methods to gain competitive advantage by local based businesses. The study will sample 478 local-based businesses registered in Kenya out of a population of 4 thousand which are mainly registered and operated in village area settings. The study will collect both primary and secondary data, and the quantitative data generated will be analyzed using descriptive statistics which will include percentage distribution, mean and the frequency counts. The qualitative data from the study will undergo transcription and reported in themes and sub-themes. The relationship between the independent and dependent variables will be explained through multiple regression.
