Alien: Covenant, 2017

20th Century Studios has announced new plot details, cast additions and production status for the latest “ Alien ” film.

While the premise for the yet-to-be-titled movie has been kept under wraps, the studio did reveal that the film will follow “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

In addition to the cast announcement, 20th Century Studios announced that the ninth film in the franchise will begin production on March 9 in Budapest.

Fede Alvarez , serves as the director, screenwriter and producer, following his direction of horror films, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” “Don’t Breathe” and the “Evil Dead” remake. Under the Scott Free banner, original “Alien” director, Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer with Michael Pruss (“Our Friend”). Scott and Pruss are joined by producers Brent O’Connor (“Bullet Train”), Elizabeth Cantillon (“Persuasion”) and Tom Moran (“The Donut King”).

The untitled project joins the prequel series, which first premiered in 2012, with “Prometheus,” followed by “Alien: Covenant.” The prequel series is the latest iteration, and follows the original series which began in 1979, with “Alien,” followed by “Aliens,” “Alien 3,” “Alien Resurrection,” and then the crossover series which began in 2004, with “Alien vs. Predator” and “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.”

While the production date has been announced for next week, the untitled project has yet to set a premiere date.

The 7 Best New Movies on Max in February 2024

F ind something new to watch this weekend with our curated list of the best new movies streaming on Max , which offers a little something for everyone. The streamer formerly known as HBO Max has one of the best libraries in the entire streaming world, and in February saw a number of noteworthy titles added to the platform. We've got swoon-worthy romantic dramas, slasher films, bona fide classics and a very fresh new release all ready to make your movie night.

Check out our picks for the best new movies on Max in February 2024 below.

This romantic drama will break your heart and put it back together again. Written by Nick Hornby ("High Fidelity" and "About a Boy") and directed by John Crowley ("Boy A"), the film begins in 1951 and follows a young Irish woman played by Saoirse Ronan who's preparing to immigrate to New York for a better life. After making the trek, she meets and falls in love with a young Italian-American boy (played by Emory Cohen). But when she's unexpectedly called back to Ireland, where she finds herself drawn to a local man (played by Domhnall Gleeson). With her heart in two places at once, she must decide what kind of life she wants to lead - and where to lead it. This film is warm and sweet, and it will make you cry. – Adam Chitwood

Friday the 13th (2009)

The "Friday the 13th" remake is good, actually! This 2009 redo hails from the same team behind the 2003 update of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and takes the basic premise of the horror franchise but puts a new spin on it. In truth the best part about this film is the extended cold open - no spoilers but it does not go where you think it's going. A charming cast is rounded out by Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker and Amanda Righetti. – Adam Chitwood

A Ghost Story

If existential dread is your bag, "A Ghost Story" is one of the more unique entries in the "ghost movie" genre in the last decade. This original indie from writer/director David Lowery stars Casey Affleck as a man who dies and becomes a ghost, destined to haunt the small Texas home he shared with his wife for all time. It's a decidedly lo-fi affair -- Affleck and other ghost characters appear wearing sheets with their eye holes cut out, and Lowery presents the film in 1:3 aspect ratio. But it's also a tremendously moving piece of work that builds to a climax that packs an emotional wallop. – Adam Chitwood

"Priscilla" got lost in the end of the year crush, perhaps dinged by the more widely scene "Elvis" last year. And that's a shame. Because it is a really special movie. Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, the film charts Priscilla Presley's (Cailee Spaney) life as it relates to Elvis (Jacob Elordi) - how he came into her life, how he made her parents feel and, ultimately, how he wound up controlling her. In fact, he kept her at Graceland so much that the movie at times feels like a prison escape picture - how is she going to make it out alive and by what methods? (The final, unbroken take, too good to ruin here, says it all.) Tellingly, the Elvis estate didn't let them film at Graceland or use any of his music, but that actually adds to the movie's power, instead of taking that power away. Plus it's way cooler to watch Priscilla Presley get her hair done to a Dan Deacon song. Coppola's career has been littered with women who have felt trapped by privilege, whether it's Scarlett Johansson in a glitzy Japanese hotel or Marie Antoinette lazing around the palace. Priscilla is another one of those women. Nobody could have brought her story to life better than Coppola. And nobody could have played her as well as Spaeny. - Drew Taylor

Citizen Kane

One of the best films ever made, if not the best film ever made, is "Citizen Kane." You've heard the hype, but if you somehow haven't seen it, give this one a spin. Orson Welles was just 26 years old when this stunning debut was released, which finds Welles directing and starring in the sweeping story of a publishing magnate whose final words - "Rosebud" - send the media into a tailspin to figure out what it means. This one pairs nicely with David Fincher's "Mank," which tells the story of the man who co-wrote "Citizen Kane" and is streaming on Netflix. – Adam Chitwood

The LEGO Movie

"The LEGO Movie" is a miracle. This 2014 animated film from filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller surprises at every turn as it works as a simple story of a LEGO brick man who discovers there's more to the world he lives in, but also as a commentary on materialism, capitalism and the very act of creating art. Wildly inventive and laugh-out-loud hilarious, this one delivers whether you've seen it zero or a hundred times. – Adam Chitwood

Ring in the impending spring with "Midsommar," one of the brightest and most colorful horror movies ever made. Ari Aster's 2019 film that became an A24 favorite stars Florence Pugh as a young woman grieving the death of her sister and parents who invites herself on a trip to a midsummer festival at a commune with her boyfriend and his friends. But what starts as a curious and lovely trip into a tight-knit community soon turns into a nightmare as the rituals planned for this particular festival aren't all fun and games. Pugh is incredible and Aster proves to be a master at tone as he keeps a visually restrained approach that makes the horrors all the more horrifying. – Adam Chitwood

Los Angeles desperately needs a new film festival. They’re about to give it one

Los Angeles has struggled during the last few years to sustain a signature high-profile film festival, with the closing of the Los Angeles Film Festival , the collapse of Outfest and changes in leadership at AFI Fest .

At the same time, thanks to local institutions such as the Academy Museum , the American Cinematheque and the UCLA Film and Television Archive — as well as organizations such as Vidiots , the New Beverly and Mezzanine — there has arguably never been a more vibrant moment for going to the movies in Los Angeles.

A new festival, the Los Angeles Festival of Movies, co-presented by Mezzanine and the distributor and streaming platform Mubi, hopes to bridge that divide, creating a destination that will tap the enthusiasm of local audiences for both new work and retrospective titles. Set to launch its inaugural four-day edition on April 4, the festival is programmed by Micah Gottlieb, the artistic director of Mezzanine, who founded and co-produced the event with Sarah Winshall, a producer at Smudge Films.

“Often I think that new independent films struggle to gain a foothold in L.A.,” said Gottlieb, 32, in a recent joint interview with Winshall, 38, over Zoom. “Film festivals in L.A. are often defined in relation to the commercial film industry. We wanted to create a space for the kinds of films that either don’t usually play in L.A. or, if they do, they may not get the platform that they deserve.”

“L.A. is so much of a company town, but there is really an audience for movies that may not be traditionally commercial,” agreed Winshall. “I think that audience is being underestimated. And so we’re trying to find a way to show the world, L.A., the industry, whoever, that there is an audience here for these films. Let’s give them all a place to gather and celebrate these movies.”

The new showcase will open with the California premiere of Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” which launched at Sundance to rave reviews and will also have showings at the Berlin and South by Southwest film festivals. (Schoenbrun is expected to be in attendance at the screening.) Other titles will include the L.A. premieres of Eduardo Williams’ 2023 experimental documentary “The Human Surge 3” and a 4K restoration of Chantal Akerman’s erotically charged 1982 drama “Toute une nuit.”

Ex-Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon and “The Flamethrowers” author Rachel Kushner will appear together for a talk about their personal relationships to the city and cinema of Los Angeles. A shorts program is being organized by Andrew Theodore Balasia, Ted Gerike and Sam Raphael, all from the local L.A. microcinema Now Instant Image Hall.

The entire program, expected to include 12 features, will be announced in a few weeks, according to organizers. (The festival’s website is lafestivalofmovies.org .) Attendees will be lining up at Vidiots in Eagle Rock, 2220 Arts + Archives in Historic Filipinotown and Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown.

A man sweeps a bar.

The choice of venues was purposeful, as they all include spaces for people to socialize and talk about the films after screenings. All three of the host sites have opened within the last few years, and all three are located east of Hollywood, an attempt to tap into the energy of the current filmgoing scene taking root there. (Previous L.A.-based festivals have more often tried to connect with industry-heavy audiences based on the city’s Westside or with the history of Hollywood itself.)

“There’s a whole new audience of predominantly young, really diverse groups of cinephiles who are coming out to these screenings,” said Gottlieb of the viewers he sees at these venues. “So we really wanted to harness this new generation of cinephiles who are discovering old classics, but also coming out to new restorations and new independent films. This is also the age of Letterboxd , where watching movies has become such a renewed social event.”

Winshall and Gottlieb met after she attended some of Gottlieb’s Mezzanine screenings and was struck by the sense of community building up around the programming.

“What Mezzanine has harnessed and tapped into is a sort of art-skewing intellectual audience that’s ready to be entertained,” said Winshall. “They also want to get dressed up and look nice and have fun out and about. But then they’re also reading philosophy, they’re reading film criticism, they’re engaging in literary conversations. Historically, Los Angeles has always been treated like we don’t have that kind of person here.”

Winshall pointed to regional festivals such as Baltimore’s New/Next Film Festival, Memphis’ Indie Memphis, BAMcinemaFest in Brooklyn and True/False in Columbia, Mo., as models for the LAFM.

“What we’re trying to do is treat Los Angeles like a small town in some ways, and create a festival for a small community that is really excited and passionate,” said Winshall. “I think in the past, it’s possible that there was too much trying to please too many audiences — trying to please film lovers and the industry, which don’t always overlap.

“We aren’t trying to do everything for everybody,” she added. “I’m very much a proponent of: Pick a thing and do it well.”

The festival’s opener, “I Saw the TV Glow” is indicative of what Winshall describes as “pop highbrow,” having connected strongly with audiences of multiple demographics when it became one of the runaway hits of this year’s Sundance. It’s the story of two teenagers who bond over a shared love of a canceled ’90s television show. Steeped in specific pop-culture references and nostalgia, the movie is also an exploration of an emerging trans identity.

Winshall is among the film’s producers (as is Emma Stone) and is careful to point out that she was not involved in any of the programming conversations or decisions around the festival’s opening night.

Two people sit on a couch in front of a TV.

“I was going to joke that, ‘Yeah, if only there was an easier way to find a good place to premiere a film in L.A. than start your own film festival,” Winshall said with a self-deprecating laugh. “It’s definitely selfish in that I’m making independent films and I really want to be able to have a great place to show them in L.A. Historically, that’s been a struggle.”

Gottlieb describes his connection with Winshall as a shared sensibility of “a lot of the same concerns and passions and interests around exhibition in Los Angeles and film culture in general.” Of “I Saw the TV Glow,” he noted, “It’s an independent film that takes really big swings and feels very contemporary. So when I reached out to [the film’s distributor] A24 and then they were down to have us premiere the film locally, I could not be more excited about it.”

There is something purposefully tongue-in-cheek in the slight mouthful of a name for the festival itself, the Los Angeles Festival of Movies. Gottlieb and Winshall wanted viewers to know that, for all their seriousness of purpose, there was still something entertaining at the festival’s heart.

“There are all kinds of ways for this to go in the future if we are able to get our foothold and flourish,” said Winshall, suggesting there are plans to grow the festival if it becomes an established success. “We just wanted people to know that it would be fun.”

“That’s kind of what it comes down to,” said Gottlieb. “As much as we harp on curation and context and all of these things, we still want people to have a good time.”

‘Saltburn’ Mansion Has Film’s Fans Flocking to the English Countryside

A popular video on TikTok takes viewers to the site of Drayton House, where much of the movie was filmed.

Reporting from London

Drayton House, a privately owned mansion with more than a hundred rooms, has stood in Northamptonshire, England, for close to 700 years.

For most of those seven centuries, the manor was a silent countryside presence, known mostly to locals or experts with a penchant for viewing beautiful homes owned by England’s upper classes.

But that peace and quiet has changed since the release of “Saltburn” in November. Though the film largely didn’t impress critics , it has generated a flood of memes, jokes and commentary on the internet.

And a pilgrimage to this once-quiet estate was made even easier after Rhian Williams, who lives nearby, posted detailed directions to the house in a TikTok video on New Year’s Day. Her clip ended up attracting more than 5.5 million views. She has since followed up with more videos, including another visit to the house as well as a visit to the local pub.

“I haven’t got very many followers on TikTok,” Ms. Williams said in a phone interview. “I didn’t predict it,” she said.

The house is at the center of “Saltburn,” the eponymous home of the Catton family where Oliver Quick, played by Barry Keoghan, spends the summer. Many of the film’s most memorable scenes take place inside the house and on the property’s sprawling, lavish grounds.

Vanity Fair reported last summer that the filmmakers, as a condition of being allowed to use the estate, were not permitted to reveal its location or who owned it. But in August, just before the film’s premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, the British magazine Tatler identified the home based on a close viewing of the trailer.

Drayton House, a Grade I building that is protected because of its historical nature, has been privately held for hundreds of years. Its ownership has changed over the centuries through inheritance, and is currently owned by Charles Stopford Sackville, who inherited the home from his father.

The house has been in hands of the Sackville family since the late 18th century, when it was inherited by Lord George Sackville, according to Historic England, the public organization that tracks such buildings.

The current owner is reportedly unhappy with all the attention his house has been receiving, however, telling the British newspaper The Daily Mail on Sunday , “How would you feel if people were taking pictures outside your house?” Drayton Estate Office, located in the same town, declined to comment.

While the house is visible from a public footpath, some visitors have tried to get closer, Ms. Williams said, resorting to climbing fences or other methods to get too close to the private home. (Ms. Williams said she didn’t encounter any trespassers during her visits.) Others have posted videos of their own visits on TikTok, with many posing in front of the gate through which Mr. Keoghan’s character enters his life-changing summer.

England is peppered with dramatic, stately homes, some of which have hosted film productions — and the tourists who come with them. Chatsworth House was seen in “Peaky Blinders” and the 2005 version of “Pride and Prejudice” and other productions. Highclere Castle, the house at the center of “Downton Abbey,” is open to the public.

The popularity of “Saltburn” has brought hundreds of tourists to a part of the country that is not usually busy, especially not in the dark winter months. Steven Hyare, the manager of the local pub the Snooty Fox, said he had seen a steady increase in visitors since the film was released late last year.

In 2023, early January was a quiet time, he said. This year, the weekends at his establishments have been fully booked two weeks in advance. Many of the guests are younger than his usual clientele, Mr. Hyare said.

Mr. Hyare said that while he welcomed the increased business from “Saltburn” tourists and the younger visitors, he was not planning on doing anything different. “We’re not outside selling T-shirts,” he said.
