Inside the LACMA Art + Film Gala 2023 With Leonardo DiCaprio, Billie Eilish, Lenny Kravitz and More

The 2023 LACMA Art + Film Gala took place on Saturday, Nov. 4, and the guest list was packed with A-listers and Oscar winners, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, Billie Eilish and more, marking the starriest red carpet Hollywood has seen in some time, given the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
DiCaprio, LACMA trustee Eva Chow, Gucci Creative Director Sabato De Samo and Gucci President and CEO Jean-François Palus co-chaired the event which was presented by Gucci. The star-studded guest list included Ben Affleck, Kim Kardashian, Keanu Reeves, Andrew Garfield, Jessica Chastain, Lee Jung-Jae, Ava DuVernay, Jodie Comer, Lupita Nyong’o, Ke Huy Quan, Celine Song, Laura Harrier, Colman Domingo, Quinta Brunson, Heidi Klum and Paris Hilton, among others. Lopez also introduced the night’s musical guest – Lenny Kravitz, who rocked the venue with a thrilling set.
At the event, Gucci introduced its Ancora Notte collection, the first eveningwear collection designed by Sabato De Sarno. Celebrities such as ASAP Rocky, Elliot Page, Garfield and Pedro Pascal revealed De Sarno’s first steps into formal menswear.
The gala took place at the LACMA exhibition “Painting in the River of Angels: Judy Baca and the Great Wall.” During the live experience, museum-goers can observe Baca painting murals that will be added to the original “Great Wall” mural at the L.A. River, which Baca and other community members painted from 1974 to 1984.
Proceeds from the annual Art+Film Gala go toward underwriting LACMA’s initiative to make film more central to the museum’s curatorial programming, while also funding LACMA’s broader mission including exhibitions, acquisitions and educational programming that explore the intersection of art and film.

November is the month of thankfulness, so why not be thankful for some great independent cinema?
As the end of the year approaches, new films arrive in theaters at a rapid pace with big blockbusters, seasonal holiday films, and major Oscar contenders all vying for those juicy November and December slots. This month alone, some highly anticipated films include “American Fiction,” “Dream Scenario,” “Leave the World Behind,” “May December,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “Napoleon,” and the Disney Film “Wish.” On streaming, new movies skew towards the seasonal holiday variet with mountains of Christmas rom-coms coming to Netflix for you to enjoy and/or dread. But there’s still plenty of classic films arriving on platforms this November — including great independent movies that have released as recently as 2014 and as far back as 1969.
It’s a particularly great month for the Criterion Channel: the streamer for many cinephile’s favorite home video company, The Criterion Collection. Some gems include the 1998 hip hop classic “Belly,” starring rap legends Nas and DMX. You can also find 2000 Argentinian heist film “Nine Queens,” along with the Harmony Korine oddball experiment “Trash Humpers,” and obscure late ’90s treat “Drylongso.” On more mainstream pastures, you can find some solid recent selections like “Whiplash” and “Winter’s Bone,” on Netflix and Max respectively. For older and iconic independent hits — like watershed ’60s counterculture classic “Easy Rider” or David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” — look at Peacock or Paramount+. Add in all-time greats like Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” or bittersweet romantic drama “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and you have a strong roster of films to enjoy this fall.
Read on for the 10 best classic independent films new to streaming this November. Entries are listed in no particular order, and are compiled from new releases on streamers like Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Prime Video, Showtime, and Peacock, as well as specialty services like Metrograph, Criterion Channel, and Shudder.
“Whiplash” (Streaming on Netflix)

Damien Chazelle made his feature debut in 2009 with “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” but the director truly broke through in 2014 when he made “Whiplash,” which turns the typical teacher-student mentorship film into a tense, nerve-racking thriller. Miles Teller stars as aspiring jazz drummer Andrew, whose dream of attending a prestigious New York City conservatory turns into a nightmare thanks to his overbearing, abusive instructor Fletcher (JK Simmons). Simmons is charismatically loathsome in the role, but what makes “Whiplash” really pop is that Andrew is as single-minded and stubborn as Fletcher is demeaning and cruel — and the friction between the two is so spectacular that its dramatically unclear which will snap first. Add in a gorgeous score and laser-focused direction from Chazelle and you have a film that makes beautiful music.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (Streaming on Peacock)

One of the most beloved romantic films of the 21st century, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” has only grown in stature since its 2004 release. Directed by Michel Gondry with a script by Charlie Kaufman, the film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a couple whose loving relationship turns sour; they soon decide to medically erase their memories of one another in order to avoid living with the heartbreak. The journey into their memories provides a searing window into the pains of a long-term relationship, but also the joys. It’s a visually inventive and gorgeous film. At its heart is the two fantastic performances from Carrey and Winslet, and the simple but powerful message of hanging on to both the good and the bad parts of love.
“Blue Velvet” (Streaming on Paramount+ With Showtime)

Although it’s one of the king of weirdo cinema David Lynch’s most famous films, “Blue Velvet” is a relatively straightforward, albeit still a nasty and sometimes surreal window into human darkness. Teaming up with his now-frequent collaborator Kyle MacLachlan, Lynch uses “Blue Velvet” and its story of a college student investigating the life of a troubled lounge singer to dig into some of his frequent recurring themes, including abuse, sex, and the dark underbelly of picture-perfect American life. It’s one of the director’s very best films, thanks in part to its killer ensemble — including a heartbreaking Isabella Rossellini and a memorably depraved Dennis Hopper.
“Reservoir Dogs” (Streaming on Paramount+ With Showtime)

One of the most iconic movies of the ’90s, “Reservoir Dogs” caused an immediate stir when it debuted at 1992’s Sundance Film Festival with many critics panning its violence and profanity. But the film also attracted many admirers and it remains one of Tarantino’s most universally beloved works. Starring an ensemble cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, and Michael Madsen, the clever heist film skips the heist — a jewelry store robbery carried out by a group of professional thieves that fails miserably — entirely, instead cutting between the weeks leading up to the job as the crew gets recruited and the immediate fallout as they stand off with the police while trying to determine which member ratted them out. Featuring the beginnings of Tarantino’s trademark style, uniformly fantastic performances from the cast, and a script that’s simultaneously funny and tragic, “Reservoir Dogs” packs in some of the best thrills you can find in any movie.
“Winter’s Bone” (Streaming on Max)

Before she was Katniss Everdeen or an Oscar winner, Jennifer Lawrence first got attention for her performance in Debra Granik’s quiet, scrappy indie “Winter’s Bone.” And over a decade later, her role in the film as a teen girl caring for her family in the rural Ozarks is arguably still her all-time best — grounded and lived-in and decidedly unshowy. Her character Ree’s desperate search for her missing father is wildly compelling, a window into financial destitution and people left behind that still contains a glimmer of hope.
“Easy Rider” (Streaming on Peacock)

A counterculture classic, Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider” stars the director and Peter Fonda as two drug-smuggling motorcyclists on a journey from Los Angeles to New Orleans, where they’re hoping to celebrate Mardi Gras. Along the road, they encounter a colorful cast of hippies, free-love commune residents, addicts, prostitutes, and other outsiders. Their free-wheeling adventures are contrasted by the judgment they face from small-town types and law enforcement looking to lock them up. The movie’s unexpected financial success almost single-handedly kickstarted the New Hollywood filmmaking era, and it still remains a lovable, shaggy time capsule to this day.
“Belly” (Streaming on Criterion Channel)

The feature directorial debut of Hype Williams, the man behind iconic music videos like “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” by Missy Elliot, “Belly” was panned when it first premiered but is now seen as an under-appreciated cult classic. Starring a truly ridiculous number of top-tier hip-hop and RNB talent like Nas, DMX, Method Man, T-Boz, and Sean Paul, “Belly” focuses on the diverging paths of two childhood friends who become partners in crime but slowly break apart thanks to political and philosophical differences. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s certainly a cool one thanks to the surprisingly solid performances from Nas and DMZ and the gorgeous stylized visuals from Williams. In addition to the first film, “Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club” is also streaming on Criterion.
“Drylongso” (1998)

Very recently rereleased by Janus Films in March of this year, “Drylongso” is a late ’90s gem that deserves to be seen by more people. From experimental director “Cauleen Smith,” the Oakland-shot film focuses an aspiring teenage artist (Toby Smith) who begins a project photographing Black men around her neighborhood as news reports of a serial killer in the area spread and cause her to fear for her safety. As she continues her project, she develops a moving friendship with Tobi (April Barnett), a young woman in an abusive relationship. Along with its streaming debut, the film has also been added to the physical Criterion Collection.
“Trash Humpers” (Streaming on Criterion Channel)

Pretty much every film Harmony Korine has ever made is intended to shock and disgust, and it doesn’t get more obvious than when he released a film literally called “Trash Humpers.” Shot via the scrappy, visually arresting medium of used VHS tapes, the movie is an almost entirely narrativeless series of vignettes following a quartet of elderly people (actually Korine and some friends in makeup) as they engage in some depraved, gross, and generally awful acts. For many, this sounds unbearable, but for others, there’s a sicko charge to the whole proceeding that makes for something incredibly fun. If you’ve ever wanted to see a band of elderly weirdos masturbate to, yes, trash, this is the film for you.
“Nine Queens”

A thrilling heist movie, “Nine Queens” is considered an all-time classic of Argentinian cinema in its home country. Starring Gastón Pauls and Ricardo Darín, the film focuses on two small-time con artists who meet while they’re both scamming a convenience store and team up for a bigger job attempting to sell counterfeit stamps to a wealthy Spanish collector. It’s a simple premise for any thriller, but it’s a sense of paranoia, great performances, and director Fabián Bielinsky are what make it a total blast.

Iconoclasm and the “Triumph of Orthodoxy”
Christians initially disagreed over whether religious images were good or bad. Texts from as early as the second and third century describe some Christians using religious images, which they illuminated and adorned with garlands, but these practices were not universal or standardized. Church authorities often criticized these practices, which reminded them of customs associated with pagan Greece and Rome, where images of gods and emperors were widely venerated.

Iconoclasts whitewashing an icon of Christ, miniature in the Theodore Psalter (Add MS 19352, fol. 27v), 1066, Constantinople ( The British Library )
By the eighth and ninth centuries, icons were increasingly popular, and arguments about religious images boiled over in what is called the “ Iconoclastic Controversy .” The so-called “iconoclasts” (literally, “breakers of images”) opposed icons, arguing that God was transcendent and could not be depicted in art. The iconoclasts feared that Christians praying before icons were worshipping inanimate objects.
On the other hand, the “iconophiles” (literally “lovers of images”), also known as “iconodules” (literally “servants of images”), defended icons, arguing that since Jesus, the Son of God, was born with a visible human body, he could be depicted in images. The iconophiles maintained that rather than worshipping inanimate objects, they honored icons as a means of honoring the holy figures represented in icons.
Imperial and Church authorities in favor of icons gathered at a council in the city of Nicaea in 787 to try to resolve the controversy, but it was not until 843 that the Church definitively affirmed the use of images, ending the Iconoclastic Controversy in what became known as the “ Triumph of Orthodoxy .” To this day, icons continue to play important roles in the faith and worship of the Eastern Orthodox Church , which is heir to the religious tradition of Byzantium.

Imperial and church authorities affirm the use of images in this Icon of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, c. 1400, Constantinople, tempera on wood, 39 x 31 x 5.3 cm ( The British Museum )
In addition to affirming Christian images, the 787 Council of Nicaea II and subsequent 843 Triumph of Orthodoxy also enshrined devotional practices associated with icons. Christians should bow before and kiss icons, light candles and lamps, and burn incense before them. All of these acts of devotion directed at images were intended to pass to the holy figures represented. As a modern analogy, we might consider the ways many people frame and hang photos of loved ones in their homes, sometimes even embracing or kissing such images.
Reading icons
Today, many people identify art with creativity and self-expression. But this was not always the case. Icons were meant to represent historical figures and Christian teaching in a manner that was recognizable and understandable for viewers. Since icons were venerated as a way of showing devotion to the figure represented, understanding who was depicted was particularly important. To achieve this, artists often relied on established artistic conventions.

Peter and Paul appear much the same through the centuries. Left: glass bowl base, 4th century, Roman ( The Metropolitan Museum of Art ); center: mosaics, 11th century, Hosios Loukas Monastery, Greece; right: panel icon, 17th century, Greek ( Temple Gallery ).
For example, Saints Peter and Paul appear much the same through the centuries: Peter is an old man with white wavy hair and a short beard; Paul has balding, brown hair and a pointy beard. Modern viewers may dismiss such repetition as unoriginal. But for viewers familiar with these conventions, the figures in icons were immediately recognizable, like seeing the faces of old friends.

Saints with their iconographic attributes. Left to right: Evangelist Matthew with Gospel Book ( The Metropolitan Museum of Art ), the deacon Saint Stephen swinging a censer ( The Menil Collection ), the healer Saint Panteleimon holding a medicine box ( byzantologist , CC BY-NC-SA 2.0), and the martyr Saint Barbara holding a cross ( byzantologist , CC BY-NC-SA 2.0). (view annotated image)

Icon with Saint Demetrios, 950–1000, Byzantine, ivory, 19.7 x 12.1 x 1cm ( The Metropolitan Museum of Art )
Artists also used what art historians call “iconographic attributes” to identify figures. For example, evangelists (authors of the Gospels) often hold Gospel books. Clergy saints wear church vestments and hold liturgical objects, such as censers, which were used by the clergy in church services. Healer saints hold boxes of medicine. Martyrs—saints who had died for their faith—often hold crosses to associate their sacrifice with the death of Christ on the cross.
These attributes helped identify the holy figures represented. But there were no rulebooks governing these conventions, so iconographic attributes were subject to change. It was only in the post-Iconoclastic period, for example, that artists regularly depicted soldier saints in military garb, as seen in this tenth- or eleventh-century ivory icon of Saint Demetrios.
Another way of guaranteeing that viewers recognized the figures in icons was by including texts that labeled the icon’s subjects. Although labels were sporadic before Iconoclasm, they became normative in the post-Iconoclastic era. So, icons of Christ are labeled “IC XC” (the Greek abbreviation for “Jesus Christ”). Icons of the Virgin Mary are labeled “MP ΘY” (the Greek abbreviation for “Mother of God”). And icons of most other holy figures are labeled ὁ ἅγιος ( o agios , meaning “saint,” or more literally, “holy”), sometimes abbreviated with as an “Α” within an “Ο” as seen in this this tenth- or eleventh-century ivory icon of Saint Demetrios.

Icon of Christ Pantokrator, late 14th century, Thessaloniki, egg tempera on wood, 157 x 105 x 5 cm ( Museum of Byzantine Culture , Thessaloniki)
Consider how these elements work together in this late-fourteenth-century icon of Christ. Christ appears with his conventional long brown hair and beard. Iconographic attributes describe him further: The artist has sought to portray Christ in clothing from the ancient era in which he lived; Christ holds a Gospel book displaying his own words from Matthew 6:14–15 ; and there is a cross in Christ’s halo because he was crucified to save the world. Finally, the text identifies this as “Jesus Christ,” and also includes a more particular title: “the Wisdom of God.” Together, all these elements enabled Byzantine viewers to recognize the figure who gazed out and blessed them.
Variety and creativity
But while the use of artistic conventions, attributes, and inscriptions made icons recognizable through the centuries, it would be wrong to suggest that all icons were the same. Icons varied based on the scale and medium in which they were depicted, as well as across periods and regions, where they were often the product of local materials, workshops, and tastes.

Depictions of the Virgin and Child varied widely in icons. Left to right: Enthroned Virgin and Child, 950–1025, Byzantine ( The Cleveland Museum of Art ); Virgin orans, 13th century, Yaroslavl ( byzantologist ); Virgin Eleousa, early 14th century, Byzantine ( The Metropolitan Museum of Art ), Virgin Kykkotissa, 13th–14th century, Cyprus ( Byzantine Museum of Saint Ioannis at Kalopanayiotis , Cyprus)
Artists also regularly experimented with new compositions. Depictions of the Virgin and child, among the most popular subjects of Byzantine icons, took numerous forms through the centuries.

An early example of the Anastasis appears on this reliquary (container for relics) (left), located on the bottom right corner of the inside of the lid (right). Sometimes, artists invented new images that were widely imitated. The Anastasis (Greek for “Resurrection”), which depicted Christ descending into Hades (the underworld) to raise the dead from their tombs, first appeared in the eighth century and has remained a common image in Orthodox churches to this day.

But another example, the unique tenth-century ivory Crucifixion at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which drew imagery from church hymnography to show Christ’s cross impaling a personification of Hades, was apparently one of a kind. No comparable images survive.

Functions of icons
Icons had a wide range of functions in Byzantium. Their readability enabled them to illustrate Biblical texts , hagiographies , and theological ideas. It was a truism in the middle ages that images functioned as “books for the illiterate.” Before the age of the printing press and inexpensive books, few people owned books, and many could not read. While biblical passages were read aloud in church services, icons offered visual depictions of biblical events that all could see whenever they entered a church.

Icons also served as a focus for prayer and devotion, both in church services and in private settings. The frontality of portrait icons facilitated face-to-face encounters between holy figures and worshippers who wished to address the holy figures in prayer. The eleventh-century Theodore Psalter anachronistically imagines such an encounter between King David (from the Hebrew Bible) and a Byzantine icon of Christ.

In many instances, the saints were believed to work miracles through their icons. Numerous Byzantine texts describe the figures in icons coming alive to defend or heal people. Icons could even be worn as jewelry , and inscriptions suggest that their wearers hoped these wearable icons would protect or heal them.

And in a culture with no notion of separation of church and state, icons frequently blurred the boundaries between religious and political imagery. Icons were carried in public processions, processed around city walls in times of distress, and even carried into battle. A fourteenth-century fresco at Markov Manastir in North Macedonia depicts both the Byzantine emperor and Church officials in procession with an icon of the Virgin and Child. In Hagia Sophia , the great cathedral of the Byzantine capital, mosaics depicted haloed emperors and empresses within the same frame as Christ and the Virgin. Icons of Christ even appeared on Byzantine coins during the reign of Justinian II around the turn of the eighth century, where God and emperor were literally on two sides of the same coin.

Adorning icons
Increasingly in the Late Byzantine periods, wealthy patrons affixed thin pieces of precious metal, or “revetments,” to icons as a way to honor the holy figures depicted. These metallic adornments often included ornamental motifs, additional icons, and sometimes even images of the patrons and poetic inscriptions known as epigrams, which recorded the donor’s prayers.

An icon in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow preserves silver revetment from thirteenth- or fourteenth-century Constantinople, although a later, fifteenth-century painting has replaced the original, which was likely lost or damaged. This revetment covers much of the wooden surface with a swirling filigree pattern, and smaller icons of various saints populate the icon’s frame. Two full-length portraits of the Byzantine donors appear in the lower corners of the frame.

After the fall of Byzantium to the Ottomans in 1453, the tradition of affixing precious materials to icons endured in places like Russia, where the icon cover was referred to as an oklad or riza . Russian oklads were often elaborate, covering the entire icon except for the face and hands of the holy figures represented, as seen with a seventeenth-century icon depicting the face of Christ at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The modern “discovery” of icons
Use and the passage of time often left icons worn out or damaged. Icon varnish tended to darken with age, obscuring the icon’s image. In an age when modern restoration techniques did not yet exist, artists often painted directly over the darkened images so that an icon could be seen and used once again.

But at the turn of the twentieth century, new restoration techniques enabled conservators to uncover the original layers of many old, overpainted icons. In Russia, countless icons were stripped of oklads, darkened varnish, and layers of overpainting to reveal their original images. Such was the case with the fifteenth-century icon of the Trinity attributed to Andrew Rublev, restored in 1904 and again in 1918. While the restoration of Rublev’s Trinity revealed the brilliant colors and balanced composition of the original image, it also erased the many acts of devotion and overpainting that occurred through centuries, to which nail holes across the scarred surface of the image still attest. Walking through museums in Russia, one finds that many icons bear similar nail holes that once affixed oklads to the icons’ surfaces.
Many of Russia’s newly-restored icons were transferred from churches and exhibited in museums, which drastically changed the circumstances of their viewing. Such newly cleaned icons offered art historians valuable insights about the past and inspired modern artists in the present. After viewing an exhibition with icons in Russia in 1911, Henri Matisse famously commented: “French artists should come to study in Russia: Italy offers less in this field.”
Viewing icons then and now
Both the restoration of icons and their subsequent interpretation in the twentieth century were strongly influenced by modern tastes and theories of art. Today, the earliest painted image is prized, while the oklad is often dismissed as an ornamental addition that is foreign to the nature of the painted icon. Drawing parallels with modern art, art historians and critics like Clement Greenberg described icons as non-naturalistic, and many art historians have interpreted this aspect of icons as symbolizing spirituality and the figures in icons as distant from viewers.
More recently though, art historians have noted that the Byzantines consistently described the sacred figures in icons as accurate and lifelike.

Apse mosaic depicting the Virgin and Child, dedicated 867, Hagia Sophia, Constantinople (Istanbul) (photo: byzantologist , CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)
Preaching in 867 about a new mosaic installed in the apse of Hagia Sophia following the Triumph of Orthodoxy over Iconoclasm, patriarch Photios, the leader of the Byzantine Church, stated:
With such exactitude has the art of painting, which is a reflection of inspiration from above, set up a lifelike imitation…You might think her not incapable of speaking, even if one were to ask her, “How didst thou give birth and remainest a virgin?” To such an extent have the lips been made flesh by the colors… Photios, Homily 17
Such texts remind us that the ways we view artworks are often highly contingent on our own cultural contexts.

Everything we know about the new 'Mean Girls' movie
- The trailer for the 2024 "Mean Girls" remake was released in November.
- Some of the cast members from the 2004 film will reprise their roles.
- Here's everything you need to know about the new "Mean Girls" musical adaptation.

October 3 has come and gone, but we don't have to wait a whole year for another reason to celebrate "Mean Girls."
Paramount released the trailer for the upcoming film on Wednesday. Here's everything we know about the return of Cady Heron and the Plastics.
When will the new 'Mean Girls' movie be released?
"Mean Girls" the movie musical will be released in theaters on January 12, 2024. The film was originally slated to be released on Paramount+ before moving to a theatrical release, according to Deadline .
Who's in the cast of the new 'Mean Girls' film?
The main cast of "Mean Girls" was first announced in December 2022.
The role of Cady Heron (originated by Lindsay Lohan in the first movie) will be played by "Mare of Eastown" star Angourie Rice . Meanwhile, her frenemy and head of The Plastics clique Regina George will be played by "The Sex Lives of College Girls" star Reneé Rapp. Rapp also played Regina in the stage version of "Mean Girls," while Rachel McAdams originated the role of Regina in the 2004 film.
Auli'i Cravalho , the voice of the title character in Disney's 2016 film "Moana," will play the role of Janis I'mi'ike. Lizzy Caplan originated the same character, named Janis Ian in the 2004 movie.
Newcomer Jaquel Spivey will play Cady's friend Damien Hubbard (originally played by Daniel Franzese in the 2004 film) in the movie musical.
In February 2023, Deadline announced additional cast members.
"The Summer I Turned Pretty" star Christopher Briney will play Cady's love interest, Aaron Samuels. Jonathan Bennett originated the role in the 2004 film.
Avantika, who previously starred in the Netflix film "Senior Year," will play the ditzy member of the Plastics clique, Karen. The role was originated by Amanda Seyfried .
The final member of the Plastics clique, Gretchen Wieners, will be played by "Love, Victor" star Bebe Wood. Lacey Chabert originated the role.
"The Office" star Jenna Fischer will play Cady's mom, a role originated by Ana Gasteyer in the original film. "Dawson's Creek" and "Girls5Eva" star Busy Philipps will play Regina George's mother, Mrs. George, who was played by Amy Poehler previously.
Will original cast members appear in the 'Mean Girls' movie?
Tina Fey, who wrote and starred in the original 2004 film, announced in February 2023 that both she and Tim Meadows would reprise their roles as math teacher Ms. Norbury and the North Shore High principal, Mr. Duvall, respectively. Press stills released by Paramount show the two as their iconic characters in the new film.
Any reports that Lohan or the original cast members who played The Plastics clique — McAdams, Seyfried, and Chabert — would reprise their roles are speculative as of this writing.
However, the actors clearly aren't opposed to returning to Girl World. Lohan, Chabert, and Seyfried filmed a Walmart+ commercial, released on November 1, that allowed them to reprise their roles as Cady, Gretchen, and Karen respectively.
In the commercial, Gretchen is a mom, Cady is the school guidance counselor, and Karen is a meteorologist.
Lohan shared it on social media , writing "Get in, besties. We're going shopping."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lindsay Lohan (@lindsaylohan)
McAdams didn't return as Regina George, but Franzese reprised his role as Damien and Missy Elliot also made a cameo.
On a hopeful note, Seyfried told Entertainment Tonight in February that she, Lohan, Chabert, and McAdams were "a hundred percent" open to being part of the new "Mean Girls" movie if they were asked.
At the time, she speculated that she and her former co-stars could play their characters' mothers in fun cameos, but said she hadn't seen the script yet.
Unless all of the new Plastics have more than one mom, this isn't likely to happen given the announced cast. But at least everyone appears open to a big-screen reunion.
Is the plot of 'Mean Girls' staying the same?
Fey, who wrote the 2004 "Mean Girls" script and the book for the 2017 Broadway show, also wrote the 2024 movie musical. So, the essence of the story is likely to remain the same. This is supported by the fact that both the 2004 and 2024 films have the same log line: "Cady Heron is a hit with the Plastics, an A-list girl clique at her new school when she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George."
Of course, the musical has a lot more singing and dancing in it than the movie, which only had The Plastics' famous "Jingle Bell Rock" number.
Mark Waters, who directed Lohan in both 2003's "Freaky Friday" and the original "Mean Girls," will not be directing the movie musical. Married filmmakers Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne are directing the new movie.
Some fans seem a little skeptical about the 'Mean Girls' remake — or at least confused about the trailer's lack of musical numbers
Although the 2024 "Mean Girls" film is a musical, that's not exactly made clear in the trailer, aside from a few seconds of dancing.
So, the movie is already receiving criticism from fans on social media, who are confused by the lack of songs.
"Why conceal that it's a musical? Is there anyone who wants to see a Mean Girls remake but who also hates musicals, is that a demographic? Also didn't we just have sort of a popular movie with a lot of pink and a song in it?" one user wrote on X, formally Twitter.

Another wrote that the musical aspect of the film was hidden because there was "absolutely nothing memorable" about the songs in "Mean Girls: The Musical" on Broadway. The tweet describes the project as "basically a millennial nostalgic cash grab of a movie."
You guys, there was absolutely nothing memorable about any of the songs from Mean Girls the musical - so, yeah, of course they won’t highlight that in the trailer for what is basically a millennial nostalgic cash grab of a movie. pic.twitter.com/cJpCXs2OdI — Ranch Devereaux (@theJacko) November 8, 2023
But some people on X liked the musical and defended it and the new film. "You can tell that a lot of y'all were completely unaware that the Mean Girls Broadway musical already existed and Reneé Rapp already plays Regina George in it," one user wrote, adding in their thread that people reacted the same way about the trailer for the upcoming film version of the upcoming Tony Award-winning musical "The Color Purple."

Y’all did this the day the Color Purple teaser dropped and were confused why they were singing or something was slightly different not realizing it was a theatrical adaptation of the Broadway musical. Took folks explaining that and now everyone is rightfully excited about it. — Daric L. Cottingham, M.A. (@DaricCott) November 8, 2023
One user was skeptical but hopeful, writing, "This could be real bad but hopefully in a campy way?? I know the musical and am not a huge fan of the songs nor staged story structure, but maybe it will surprise me."
