Disney movies are always dependable for a few things - catchy songs, top-quality animation, and of course, that warm, fuzzy feeling when the spirited princess and her animal sidekick learn a thing or two about family.

With over 8 decades of Disney movie magic, there are plenty of mushy family moments to choose from - but rest assured we have whittled down the very Disney quotes about family, whether it be biological, adopted, or the family you choose.

Here are 10 of the best - from films best watched snuggled on the sofa with family young and old alike.

1. Lilo and Stitch

Lilo and stitch

"Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten." - Stitch

More like this

Who'd have thought that alien experiment 626 would birth one of Disney's greatest quotes? Yes while it is technically Lilo who utters the immortal words first, it is Stitch who truly learns the meaning of Ohana during the film - perhaps more than any other Disney character...

2. Finding Nemo

"Because when I look at you, I can feel it. And I look at you and I’m home." - Dory

Yes this is technically Pixar, and yes while some believe there's a romantic spark between Marlin and the amnesiac Dory, the two never actually get together - but by the end of the film Dory certainly has a new home, and along with a newly-rescued Nemo, a surrogate family.

Coco follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who sets off a chain of events relating to a century-old mystery, leading to an extraordinary family reunion.

"We may have our differences, but nothing’s more important than family." - Miguel

Even for Pixar, Coco is a film notorious for getting the waterworks going, thanks in no small part on its emphasis on family - both dead and alive - and how they are more important than anything else.

Mulan 1998

"The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter." - Fa Zhou

Mulan shows just how far some people will go for their family - so it's a good thing Fa Zhou appreciates his courageous daughter. Let's hope the live-action remake has a similar moment.

5. The Lion King

The Lion king original

"You see? He lives in you ." - Rafiki

The Lion King has one of the all-time classic death scenes with that stampede - but it all led to this classic pearl of wisdom from Rafiki just before the famous cloud sequence. The quote even became it's very own song in The Lion King 2, one of the better direct-to-video sequels.

"Being a part of this family means you are here for this family." - Abuelita

We could write an entire article based purely on Coco quotes if we're honest, but here's one more from Miguel's grandmother - an important lesson Miguel learns just in time.

"An act of true love can thaw a frozen heart." - Olaf

Interestingly it's Olaf who gets a lot of the best lines in Frozen - including this one during the film's big climax, in which the twist is that he is referring to the sisterly love between Elsa and Anna, rather than the conventional Disney Prince romance.

8. The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid, Getty

"Well, I guess there's one problem left." - King Triton

" And what's that, Your Majesty?" - Sebastian

"How much I'm going to miss her." - King Triton

Life may be better under the sea, but it's no easier to see your child move out of home - especially when she changes species and can't ever return. Ariel may find her Prince in Eric, but the film's true emotional crux was between the flame-haired mermaid and her protective father.

"I was hiding under the porch because I love you." – Dug

Everyone knows dogs are a key member of the family - and unlike most dogs, Dug can tell his owners just how much he loves them.

10. Walt Disney

Walt Disney (Getty)

"A man should never neglect his family for business."- Walt Disney

And finally, some wise words from the main man himself, who certainly knew a thing or two about business - and even more about family going by his films.

Screen Rant

18 best lilo & stitch quotes.

Lilo & Stitch has some of the best Disney quotes about family as well as some hilarious lines too. These are some of the funniest and most heartfelt.

  • The iconic quote "Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten" reflects the heartfelt theme of family sticking together in Lilo & Stitch.
  • The humorous quote about mosquitoes being an endangered species on Earth adds a ridiculous and funny element to the story.
  • Stitch's quote about his "little and broken" family shows his emotional growth and how Lilo and Nani have influenced him to appreciate the value of family.

Disney's Lilo & Stitch is a movie that's all about ohana (family) and whether it's that of Lilo (Daveigh Chase), Stitch (Chris Sanders), Nani (Tia Carrere), Bubbles (Ving Rhames), David (Jason Scott Lee), or even more villainous characters like Dr. Jumba Jookiba (David Ogden Stiers), and many of the most memorable Lilo & Stitch quotes reflect just that. The dialogue is always giving some interesting insights into the idea of family. The best quotes from Lilo & Stitch are impactful for all members of the family, young or old, and each of them deserves to be noted and remembered.

Though there would be many great Lilo quotes and Stitch quotes in the three TV series and three direct-to-video sequels that sprang out of the original movie, the classic Lilo & Stitch quotes from the first film are counted among the all-time great animated Disney movie quotes. The story's status as one of Disney's most beloved has been proven by the development of a live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch , making it the most recent of Disney's hand-drawn animated films that have been slated to receive the treatment yet. Though the movie focuses on family and has a lot of emotional quotes, there are just as many funny Lilo and Stitch quotes, giving so many memorable lines for fans to remember.

"Ohana Means Family. Family Means Nobody Gets Left Behind Or Forgotten."

Various lilo & stitch characters.

Stitch reading the ugly duckling to ducklings in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

When it comes to Lilo & Stitch, there's no doubt that this is the most iconic quote, with this actually being one of the most memorable lines of any Disney movie. This Lilo & Stitch quote is a very heartfelt one, as it's all about not leaving others behind and the true importance of family sticking together. It's something that connects with a lot of people and the emotional delivery given by any of the numerous characters throughout the movie that say this line helps to make it the film's most heartfelt. The movie is all about family, and Stitch learning about the idea of family partly through Lilo using this quote makes it more emotional.

“Earth Is A Protected Wildlife Reserve. We’ve Been Using It To Rebuild The Mosquito Population, Which, Need I Remind You, Is An Endangered Species.”

Agent pleakley.

Pleakley wearing a wig and admiring himself in Lilo and Stitch

This particular Lilo and Stitch quote will likely go over the heads of kids seeing the movie for the first time, but adults will certainly find it funny. On Earth, no one would be thinking of mosquitos as an endangered species. Off the planet, however, it’s entirely possible that mosquitos could be considered the important species on Earth.

In fact, the idea of human beings only being protected because they’re a food source for mosquitos is present throughout Lilo & Stich when Jumba and Pleakley come to Earth. It’s exactly the kind of story point that gives a plausible reason for aliens to not harm human beings, but it’s also kind of ridiculous, the perfect fit for the movie. That’s especially true since the running joke pays off at the end when it’s revealed exactly why the aliens believe that mosquitos are so important.

“This Is My Family. I Found It, All On My Own. It’s Little And Broken, But Still Good. Yeah. Still Good.”

Nani and Lilo looking at Stitch as he talks at the end of Lilo and Stitch (2002)

While Disney's classic Ohana line is the one most fans know from this movie, this quote from Stitch himself carries as much emotional weight. Because he's an alien who primarily causes nothing but destruction, hearing Stitch talk in this way really shows the influence that Lilo and Nani have had on him. Stitch learns to appreciate the value of family more than any character within the movie, and when he accepts their flaws as well as his own, letting their love into his heart, it's a tear-jerking moment.

“She Thinks It’s Fancy?”

David kawena.

David in Lilo and Stitch, smiling.

The heart of Lilo and Stitch’s story is one of family, but in the background, there is also the burgeoning relationship between Nani and David. While David makes his interest in Nani clear, he also takes a step back to give her space to bond with her sister. He knows that she’s had to take on a lot of responsibility in raising her sister after the death of her parents, so he doesn’t push.

Lilo, of course, provides a quote exemplifying her relationship with Nani : she tells David that her sister likes his butt and his “fancy hair” because she read it in Nani’s diary. David doesn’t even pause at the revelation. He, instead, is stuck on the fact that Nani thinks his hair is fancy. It’s a small moment that demonstrates how sweet the growing relationship is between the two.

"Our Family's Little Now, And We Don't Have Many Toys."

Lilo pelekai.

Stitch looking sad in the forest in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

"Our family's little now, and we don't have many toys... But if you want, you could be a part of it. You could be our baby, and we'd raise you to be good."

Lilo has to accept a lot of hard truths throughout the movie about the position that her family is in now, and she knows that it's small and isn't perfect. However, when she explains the situation to Stitch, it's a heartbreakingly sincere and innocent appeal. She opens up about the fact that they don't have much, which is because Nani is working hard just to keep them in their home. However, she still welcomes Stitch and invites him to be in the family, which is overwhelmingly sweet.

"Can Stitch Say Goodbye?"

Lilo and Nani hugging Stitch at the end of Lilo & Stitch

While Stitch does cause Nani and Lilo a lot of problems throughout the movie, by the end, he proves himself to be the ultimate pet and someone that both the sisters love dearly. They want to keep him, and he wants to stay, but the Grand Councilwoman (Zoe Caldwell) plans to take him away.

RELATED: 10 Saddest Disney Movies Of All Time (According To Reddit)

It seems like the two lead characters are set to be ripped apart, which is incredibly emotional in itself. However, when Stitch asks about saying goodbye, the Lilo and Stitch quote demonstrates that the glimmer of something that the Grand Councilwoman had been searching for at the beginning of the movie before sentencing Stitch to exile was there after all. The fact that he's well-behaved, respectful, and considerate begins to convince her that Stitch has a genuine friendship with Lilo and that he can stay on Earth and be happy.

“The Manager’s A Vampire. He Wanted Me To Join The Legion Of The Undead.”

Nani pelekai.

Nani talks to Lilo while walking up the steps to their house in Lilo and Stitch

Much is made of how unique Lilo is. She has a hard time making friends, has unique ideas about who controls the weather, and has a preference for the animals that no one else wants. Lilo and Nani, however, are not all that different despite how much Nani tries to temper Lilo’s outbursts. This is one of the Lilo and Stitch quotes that perfectly demonstrates that.

Lilo feels guilty because she sees that she and Stitch are the reason Nani gets fired from her job as a waitress. Nani denies that Lilo and her new “dog” are the reason, instead, claiming that her manager is a vampire. Lilo gleefully replies, “I knew it,” after Nani’s explanation, which likely indicates that this is the result of a conversation they had in the past. It shows that Nani listens to all of Lilo’s ideas and that she knows when to humor her sister when Lilo is feeling particularly low.

"Don't Run. Don't Make Me Shoot You. You Were Expensive."

Dr. jumba jookiba.

Jamba holding a swiss army knife of hygeine items in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

Another of Jumba's perfectly delivered lines of villainous comedy is one that he gives to Stitch after he gets the drop on him. Considering that it's just been a very sad time for Stitch, the audience is hoping for a little sympathy from Stitch's creator, but Jumba makes sure to emphasize that all he cares about is how much money he's invested in Stitch, a classic bad dad trait. Still, voice actor David Ogden Stiers as Jumba delivers the line with such impeccable comedic timing, without even stressing it for laughs, that it's hard not to laugh, showing just how effortlessly the movie slips between emotional moments and comedic ones.

"And You Like Me Better As A Sister Than A Rabbit, Right?"

Lilo and Nani hugging on the bed in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

The relationship between Lilo and Nani is the most emotional part of Lilo & Stitch . It's a unique bond that makes Lilo and Nani one of the best sister duos in movies, with Nani doing her best by Lilo, while also dealing with the fact their parents are gone. This leads to them having a lot of fights, as Lilo doesn't make things any easier. During one hilarious argument, Nani yells that she might get a rabbit instead of Lilo as it would be quieter and better behaved. However, when things calm down, Lilo asks this cute and heartfelt question, just reassuring herself about how much Nani truly cares.

"Created Something? Ha! But That Would Be Irresponsible And Unethical. I Would Never, Ever, Make More Than One."

Jamba with Stitch in court at the beginning of Lilo and Stitch (2002)

Stitch's creator, the delightfully diabolical Dr. Jumba Jookiba, has some of the best quotes in Lilo & Stitch , not to mention some of the funniest. When he's introduced in the movie, he's been captured and put on trial for his illegal Stitch-like monster experiments but he denies any wrongdoing. As he tries to talk his way out of the situation by saying that he would never actually create something, Stitch is brought in and revealed with perfect comedic timing, leaving Jumba finishing his sentence with a hilarious addition that he wouldn't make more than one.

Jumba, despite being the villain for much of the movie, is hilarious because of moments like this. It's what helps endear him to the audience instead of the audience simply rooting for him to fail.

"His Destructive Programming Is Taking Effect. He Will Be Irresistibly Drawn To Large Cities Where He Will Back Up Sewers, Reverse Street Signs, And Steal Everyone's Left Shoe."

An often overlooked family dynamic from Lilo & Stitch –that is just as interesting as the others–is the one between Stitch and his creator, Jumba. Just about everyone other than Lilo is immediately terrified of Stitch throughout the movie and Jumba mistreats him too, but Jumba is also the only person who truly understands the extent of Stitch's villainous impulses .

Jumba is a weird and maniacal guy himself, and he clearly put a lot of his own characteristics into Stitch. So, when he knows Stitch's programming so well that he knows that Stitch will steal everyone's left shoe, it demonstrates the quirky bond that the two have. It's also another brilliantly well-delivered Lilo & Stitch line too, building up Stitch as a monster but reminding the audience that he's oddly funny too.

"I Prefer To Be Called 'Evil Genius'!"

Jumba in prison in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

Another aspect of Jumba that's often overlooked is that he is, in many ways, technically a villain in a lot of the story yet doesn't meet any of the typical villain fates seen in Disney movies . He's redeemed by the end similarly to Stitch and sticks around to become a part of Lilo's new family, being a mainstay character in the sequel movies and the series.

It's a big turnaround from his introduction in the movie's big sci-fi opening, where he's sent down to prison as he screams that he actually enjoys being called an evil genius. Of course, this Lilo and Stitch quote is a direct response to him being called an "idiot scientist," so it's clear that he doesn't appreciate the insult. However, Jumba is always amusing as an antagonistic force, his design is too cuddly for him to be scary, and he's one of the more likable Lilo & Stitch characters, even in his most dastardly moments.

"Hello? Cobra Bubbles? Aliens Are Attacking My House."

Lilo talking into the phone in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

One of the best characters in Lilo & Stitch is the tough-but-fair social worker Cobra Bubbles. When he and Lilo first meet, he gives her a card and tells her to call him the next time she's left at home without supervision. So Lilo, following his advice, calls Cobra Bubbles when Nani leaves to secure a job and Jumba attacks her house to get Stitch.

Thanks to Bubbles' odd name, this sentence is just funny by itself, but it's Lilo's characteristic matter-of-fact tone that sells it as one of Lilo & Stitch 's best quotes, with Lilo joyously giving the also-brilliant follow-up line "Oh good, my dog found the chainsaw." In any other movie, it would be dismissed as a kid telling tall tales, but here, Cobra Bubbles immediately believes Lilo and moves to help her, which is part of what makes his character so great.

"If I Give Pudge Tuna, I'd Be An Abomination!"

Pudge the fish with a sandwich in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

This Lilo & Stitch quote is both hilarious and impassioned at the same time, which really sums up Lilo's personality. It comes after she explains that she was late to her dance practice because she was giving a fish named Pudge a peanut butter sandwich as she believes that he controls the weather.

With no peanut butter in the house, Nani had initially suggested giving him a tuna sandwich, the idea of which makes Lilo yell out this memorable quote. Lilo speaks in a really mature manner here, dropping in the word abomination, which is very unexpected. But even though this quote showcases the comedic tone of this movie, it also shows what a kind and caring character Lilo is at the same time.

"I Know That's Why You Wreck Things And Push Me."

Stitch looking sad on the bed with Lilo looking sad behind him in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

When Lilo explains the death of her parents to Stitch, she shows incredible maturity which really helps to make her come off as a well-rounded character. She turns the subject over to Stitch and asks if he lost his parents, revealing she hears him crying at night, which she thinks is why he's so angry.

It's a really heartfelt and clever moment for several reasons. It shows that people act out in this manner when things are going wrong, and while Lilo projects this onto Stitch, it is also her own way of admitting that's why she behaves so erratically and disrespectfully toward Nani at times. Lilo understands Stitch because she thinks they are alike. It's the same way that Nani tries to help Lilo, alternately empathizing with her acting out and getting frustrated with her.

"We're Sisters. It's Our Job."

Lilo and Nani on the bed together in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

Part of what makes Lilo and Nani arguably Disney's best sisters is that they grow together. During one emotional scene in Lilo & Stitch , the two of them have a real heart-to-heart in order to repair things. They discuss whether they fit the definition of a broken family, and Nani says sorry for shouting at her. However, Lilo cheers her up by making it clear that it's their job to fallout, as they're sisters and it's what they should do. Their relationship dynamic is unique, but it isn't clear-cut and Nani clearly needs Lilo in her life as much as Lilo needs her. Nani, after all, was Lilo's big sister long before she was Lilo's guardian.

"It's Me Again. I Need Someone To Be My Friend. Someone Who Won't Run Away."

Nani listening to Lilo pray in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

Prior to getting Stitch, Lilo has really hit a low point which leads to her literally praying for a friend. When she sees what she thinks is a shooting star, she forces her big sister out of her room so that she can make a wish. It's then that she decides to wish for a friend.

It's an emotional scene that showcases how lonely she is, especially since Nani is now acting more as her parent , rather than her sister. It's a heart-wrenching scene, and it adds real emotional stakes to the entire relationship between Lilo and Stitch because she is simply desperate for a friend to help her grieve and get over this tough spot in her life. She might call the other girls in her dance class her friends, but it's clear that they don't think of her as their friend, and Lilo knows that they aren't really interested in spending time with her.

"I'll Remember You Though. I Remember Everyone That Leaves."

Stitch climbing out of the window in Lilo and Stitch (2002)

It's impossible not to feel emotional when Lilo delivers this line to Stitch, especially considering she is looking at a picture of her parents as she delivers it. It's one of the saddest Lilo and Stitch quotes. When Stitch is considering leaving, Lilo speaks openly with him, clearly upset about him possibly going, yet also accepting that it could happen.

The quote really hits home just how much she has lost in her early youth, with her having lost both of her parents. She desperately doesn't want to lose anyone else, and the audience begins to feel that desperation too, as well as the conflict that's brewing inside Stitch, making him a more fleshed-out character too. Emotional quotes in Lilo and Stitch like this one are part of what make the movie resonate so well with audience members young and old.

Protecting Your Dreams: The Pursuit of Happyness

 Screenshot: IMDb.com

Hey. Don't ever let somebody tell you... You can't do something. Not even me. All right? You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period. — Christopher Gardner

This quote comes from a scene in which the main character, Christopher Gardner, imparts a bit of fatherly advice to his young son, Christopher, Jr.

The advice is the crux of the movie, as it's the story of a man who works to provide for his son and protect his own dreams in the midst of many obstacles and struggles.

Find the Light: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Screenshot: IMDb.com

But you know happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light. — Professor Albus Dumbledore

It can be difficult to try to see the lighter, more positive side of a dark situation, but it's important to try to look for it anyway. Your happiness depends on it.

Beauty in Adversity: Mulan

The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all. — The Emperor of China

Mulan struggles with fitting into her family's and society's expectations of her. And yet, it was through flouting those expectations and putting herself right smack in the middle of adversity that she discovers herself and finds her confidence. And it's within that strong sense of self that her true beauty blooms.

The Purpose of Bad Times: Good Will Hunting

You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to. — Sean

It's true. Sometimes the bad times in which you struggle are the very moments that force you into something better or force you to at least see your life differently.

There Is Always Hope: The Theory of Everything

Karwai Tang/Getty Images

There should be no boundaries to human endeavor. We are all different. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there's life, there is hope. — Stephen Hawking

This is one of the best movie quotes about life. The existence of life itself is all about hope and possibility, and Stephen Hawking's life is a testament to that. No matter how difficult things got for him, he still found ways to accomplish his goals and dreams.

Finding the Good in Life's Surprises: Finding Dory

Dory: What is so great about plans? I never had a plan! Did I plan to lose my parents? No. Did I plan to find Marlin? No. Did you and I plan to meet? Wait. Did we? Hank: Are you almost done? Dory: Well, I don't think we did. And that's because the best things happen by chance. Because that's life. And that's you being with me out in the ocean, not safe in some stupid glass box.

Life is also all about surprises. You can't plan for everything. And trying to stay safe all the time doesn't work either.

Dory was an adorable character in Finding Nemo and she was responsible for one of that movie's best life lessons: Just keep swimming. And now, even in her own movie, she keeps teaching us: The best things happen by chance.

Born to Handle Life's Challenges: Gladiator

Nothing happens to anyone that he is not fitted by nature to bear. — Maximus

You've got this. Most of the time, the challenges you face are those you were already built to handle.

Just Because It's Hard Doesn't Mean It's Wrong: Pocahontas

Young man, sometimes the right path is not the easiest one. — Grandmother Willow

Grandmother Willow says this to John Smith in the movie Pocahontas, but it's applicable to you as well. Just because your dreams seem impossible doesn't mean they are. And just because your path is difficult doesn't mean you're on the wrong one.

Don't Give Up: Pay It Forward

David James/2000 Warner Bros. & Bel Air Pictures, LLC/Newsmakers/Getty Images

I think some people are too scared, or something. I guess it's hard for people who are so used to things the way they are - even if they're bad - to change. 'Cause they kind of give up. And when they do, everybody kind of loses. — Trevor McKinney

Don't give up. Yes, it's probably easier to stay stuck where you are. But if you step out of your comfort zone, even when you're scared, you'll be a lot happier. And happier people are better at helping others.

Keep Moving Forward: Rocky Balboa

You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! — Rocky

Keep moving forward. If you get knocked down, don't stay down. Get back up and keep moving forward. Even little steps forward in the face of adversity are better than no steps at all.

Only Love Saves the World: Wonder Woman

I've touched the darkness that lives in between the light. Seen the worst of this world, and the best. Seen the terrible things men do to each other in the name of hatred, and the lengths they'll go to for love. Now I know. Only love can save this world. So I stay. I fight, and I give... for the world I know can be. This is my mission, now. Forever. — Diana Prince

The movie Wonder Woman is a great origin story for the iconic superhero. Plus, it shows that no matter what darkness Wonder Woman goes through, love for her fellow man is what ultimately pulls her through. Love saves her and inspires her to keep saving the world.

Make the Best of the Time You're Given: The Lord of the Rings

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. — Gandalf

Gandalf says this after Frodo complains and wishes he'd never encountered the ring. And it's good advice: You can't control what happens to you. All you can do is play the cards you've been dealt.

Hope Never Dies: The Shawshank Redemption

 Castle Rock Entertainment/Getty Images

Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. — Andy Dufresne

Hope is what keeps Andy alive throughout his stint in prison. Sheer hope. Hope and his friendship with his fellow inmate Red.

Being able to maintain hope is a survival skill.

The Purpose of Doubt: Life of Pi

Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing. After all, you cannot know the strength of your faith until it is tested. — Pi Patel

Doubt is a part of faith. It's not the enemy of faith. In Life of Pi, Pi Patel's faith is tested over and over again. And he learns that being able to keep faith in the face of doubt only strengthens faith.

Amazing Things Can Come From Anyone: The Imitation Game

Sometimes, it's the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine. — Christopher Morcom

Don't count yourself out. Even if you don't feel amazing (or even accepted), you're still capable of amazing things.

The Importance of Being United: Black Panther

We will work to be an example of how we, as brothers and sisters on this earth, should treat each other. Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another, as if we were one single tribe. — T'Challa

Being united is much more powerful than being divided. This is especially the case in times of crisis. This quote from T'Challa is an important reminder of the value of overcoming our differences to work together towards a common goal.

It's Supposed to Be Hard: A League of Their Own

It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great. — Jimmy Dugan

Jimmy Dugan is the least inspiring character on this list, but it doesn't make what he said any less true. The best goals and dreams to pursue are the hard ones, the difficult ones. And they're the most satisfying once you do reach them.

Try For Honor: The Blind Side

But honor, that's the real reason you either do something or you don't. It's who you are and maybe who you want to be. If you die trying for something important, then you have both honor and courage, and that's pretty good. I think that's what the writer was saying, that you should hope for courage and try for honor. And maybe even pray that the people telling you what to do have some, too. — Michael Oher

Courage is a tool but honor is what you should strive for. Honor is a value. Courage can help you pursue honor.

The Definition of Bravery: Angus

Grandpa: Superman isn't brave. Angus: Did you take your pills this morning? Grandpa:  You don't understand. He's smart, handsome, even decent. But he's not brave. No, listen to me. Superman is indestructible, and you can't be brave if you're indestructible. It's people like you and your mother. People who are different, and can be crushed and know it. Yet they keep on going out there every time.

If you're a fan of Superman, this quote probably isn't for you. But if you're looking for everyday heroes, this is perfect. The brave aren't the ones with superpowers. Brave people are the ones like Angus, who, despite knowing he'll be bullied at school about his weight, still gets up and goes to school anyway.

Let Go of the Past: Forrest Gump

Sunset Boulevard/Getty Images

My Mama always said you've got to put the past behind you before you can move on. — Forrest Gump

The movie Forrest Gump is full of little nuggets of advice like this one. The whole movie is about Forrest's past and how he's survived all of his obstacles. And he's survived, partly, because he's able to move on from his past better than most people to fully embrace his present.

The 10 Best ‘Modern Family’ Quotes, Ranked

One big happy family.

Modern Family quickly became a beloved sitcom after it premiered on ABC in 2009, with its documentary-style storytelling of three related families , Jay Pritchett and his two adult children, Claire and Mitchell, and their own spouses and children, all in different phases of their lives and living in suburban Los Angeles. Modern Family was a funny yet heartfelt look at contemporary families that showed that no matter how different families may seem, they all have more in common than one might think. It ran for 11 seasons and over 250 episodes, coming to an end in 2020.

While Modern Family was known for its humor, of course, it also had plenty of moments of insight and depth. The combination of these is reflected in some of the show's most memorable quotes, from the best pieces of "Phil's-osophy" to Claire's reflections on the passage of time. The best of them serve as a reminder of why the show resonated so much with fans.

Modern Family

10 "you're never alone when you have books.", alex dunphy, season 2, episode 3, "earthquake".

Ariel Winter as Alex Dunphy smiling and looking off-camera in Modern Family.

In “Earthquake,” each member of the family had a different reaction to an earthquake. After Claire ( Julie Bowen ) got trapped in the bathroom with a plumber, Phil ( Ty Burrell ) and Haley ( Sarah Hyland ) both used it as an opportunity—him to lie about having anchored a cabinet to the wall and pretend it never fell over during the earthquake, and her to sneak out to a party. Alex ( Ariel Winter ) promised to cover for Haley if she drove her to the Museum of Tolerance.

It’s a very typical quote for the intelligent, studious Alex—it speaks to her priorities and love of books, as well as how little she cared about having a busy social life, especially in comparison to Haley. It’s also a quote that will resonate with other bookworms, as it suggests the stories and characters in books are always there , something to turn to not just for entertainment, but also as a form of companionship.

9 "Act like a parent, talk like a peer. I call it ‘peerenting’. I learned it from my own dad who used to walk into my room and say, ‘What’s up, sweat-hog?"

Phil dunphy, season 1, episode 1, "pilot".

The very first episode of Modern Family introduced audiences to the three families. At the Dunphy house, Claire chastised Haley for an outfit she considered inappropriate, and when she asked Phil for backup, he instead told Haley the skirt her mother thought was too short was cute. He then had to free Luke’s ( Nolan Gould ) head from the banister. The episode showcased Phil’s goofy sense of humor and his awkwardness , but most importantly, his love of his kids.

The series established Phil’s personality almost immediately, including his laid-back approach to relating to his kids as one of their peers—it was just the first in a series of examples over the years of the way Phil prided himself on being a “cool dad.” His attempts at “peerenting” were funny to watch, if embarrassing for his kids, and his comment on the parenting style also managed to offer a glimpse at what his own upbringing was like.

8 "Success is 1% inspiration, 98% perspiration, and 2% attention to detail."

Phil dunphy, season 4, episode 2, "schooled".

In the Season 4 episode “Schooled,” Claire and Phil dropped Haley off at college. Before they left, Phil gave her a final parting gift—a book full of the lessons he’d learned in life, which he called “Phil’s-osophy.” Among the many quotes and pieces of advice, all very typical of Phil, was his recipe for success, which combined inspiration, perspiration and attention to detail. And Haley actually did read it, prompting her to call her parents and thank them.

Many profound thinkers have put forth their formulas for success over the years, but none as wonderfully as Phil Dunphy. There is some truth to it, as it touches on the power of hard work. Best of all, though, Phil’s formula doesn’t add up to 100% —the 2% of attention to detail pushes it to 101%. It’s a very typical Phil joke, and it suggests attention to detail maybe isn’t so important after all.

7 “Look at them: A minute ago they were babies, and now they're driving, and soon we'll all be dead.”

Claire dunphy, season 2, episode 1, "the old wagon".

When the Dunphy family’s garage was getting too crowded, Claire asked Phil to sell their old station wagon in the Season 2 premiere. But as they cleaned it out, they found relics from their children’s childhoods, making it a bittersweet nostalgic experience for Claire especially. The station wagon meant something much more to her than just a car—it represented a large part of their lives—but she was able to part with it in the end.

The quote is funny yet poignant . Although Claire thought far ahead into the future and the statement took a morbid turn, it was a meaningful comment on the passage of time and how quickly it seems to go, especially when it comes to kids growing up. It’s very relatable, but it’s bound to resonate with parents especially. The moment also emphasized that the focus of the show was family.

6 "Everybody's desperately afraid, to be different, you know, in any way. And then [...], almost overnight, everybody wants to be different. And that is where we win."

Mitchell pritchett, season 1, episode 18, "starry night".

Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchel in Modern Family

Gloria’s ( Sofia Vargara ) son, Manny ( Rico Rodriguez ), struggled to fit in at school in the show’s first season, and in the episode “Starry Night,” Jay ( Ed O'Neill ) took him on a camping trip after he wasn’t invited to a classmate’s party because other kids thought he was weird. Jay asked Mitchell ( Jesse Tyler Ferguson ) to talk to Manny, resulting in the two sharing a sweet, heartfelt moment as Mitchell shared his own experiences with being picked on at school.

Modern Family was always a show that celebrated diversity, and this quote was a perfect example. It was a reminder of how when people are young, they want to fit in, but as they get older, they often do the opposite and try to set themselves apart from others. It also spoke to the fact that while some people might consider certain traits “weird,” those differences are what make people unique , which is something to be proud of.

5 "People can surprise you. You can get used to thinking of them one way […] And then they do something that there’s all this depth and dimension that you never knew existed."

Mitchell pritchett, season 2, episode 18, "boys' night".

Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett cringing while talking to the camera in Modern Family.

Mitchell and Cameron ( Eric Stonestreet ) enjoyed a night out with friends in Season 2’s “Boys’ Night.” They were even joined by Jay, who used the night as a way of getting out of going to the symphony with Gloria and Manny but ended up having a good time. Later, while watching a movie starring Rob Lowe, Mitchell commented on his acting, saying he never got the credit he deserved, possibly because of his good looks.

Mitchell’s quote on the ways people can surprise you was actually a comment about Rob Lowe’s acting, but it ended up being a deeper observation about people and others’ judgments of them which summed up the theme of the entire episode . The moment shows not just Mitchell’s growth as a character , as he tended to be judgmental early in the series, but it also says something bigger about how people perceive each other.

4 “There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not, the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists, well, without the dreamers, they might never get off the ground.”

Cameron tucker, season 3, episode 9, "punkin chunkin".

Season 3’s Thanksgiving episode, “Punkin Chunkin,” featured a story from Cam about launching a pumpkin across a football field—which Mitchell doubted was even possible. And it turned out he wasn’t alone, as when Cam questioned the family, they were split, with some agreeing that it had been made up. To prove it, the entire family headed to the nearest football field, but when the pumpkin didn’t make it very far, Claire and Mitchell weren’t as satisfied by being right as they expected and suggested making another attempt.

In “Punkin Chunkin,” Cam made a profound observation about what draws dreamers and realists to each other and how they complement each other . It was a sweet moment when the family came together—dreamers and realists in their own right—to do something fun and silly. It’s a great quote from Cam and a highlight of the episode, but it’s made all the better by the fact that it’s juxtaposed with footage of a pumpkin soaring through the sky.

3 "We like to think we are so smart, and we have all the answers. And we want to pass all that on to our children, but if you scratch beneath the surface you don't have to dig very deep to find the kid you were. Which is kind of crazy that now we're raising kids of our own. I guess that's the real circle of life. Your parents faked their way through it. You fake your way through it. And you just hope you didn't raise a serial killer."

Phil dunphy, season 2, episode 10, "dance dance revelation".

Phil from Modern Family

In “Dance Dance Revelation,” Jay and Phil took Manny and Luke to the mall, resulting in tension and disagreements all around. When Phil let people take a parking spot and cut in front of them in line, Jay complained he wasn’t teaching the boys how to be men. The episode highlighted Phil and Jay’s very different personalities, as well as Phil’s desire to impress and be liked by Jay , and Phil had some great perspectives on parenting.

Phil’s comment was a reminder that nobody is perfect , especially parents—and that childhood isn’t as far behind as some would like to think. It was a reminder that when it comes to parenting, everyone’s just doing the best they can, and part of being a parent is realizing that was true of your own parents, too. But no words of wisdom from Phil would be complete without his signature sense of humor, and the final statement about not raising a serial killer was the perfect touch.

2 "We do strange things for the people we love. There may be bumps along the way, but we never stop wanting the best for them."

Claire dunphy, season 1, episode 6, "run for your wife".

Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy smiling while holding an open book in Modern Family

Claire and Phil had a competitive race in “Run for Your Wife,” following a misunderstanding in which Phil thought that when Claire talked about wanting time alone, she actually meant the opposite. When it came time for the race, Claire chose to let Phil win after seeing his “world’s greatest dad” t-shirt and noting “it seemed like he could use a win.” Although she was being dishonest by doing it, Claire was simply putting Phil’s feelings first.

Claire’s comment—and her willingness to intentionally lose the race— spoke to people’s willingness to do almost anything for loved ones . It echoed other familiar sayings about how far people will go for love, but it also addressed what it means to love someone, in that no matter what hurdles people may face, people who love each other will always want the best for each other. And that didn't apply to just couples like Claire and Phil but family, too.

1 "Life is full of changes. Some big, some small. I learned a long time ago you can fight it or try to make the best of it. And that's all a lot easier if you've got people who love you to help you face whatever life throws at you."

Jay pritchett, season 11, episode 18, "finale part 2".

As Modern Family came to an end in Season 11, the characters embarked on new chapters of their lives . As Jay reflected on the past, as well as what the future held for his whole family, he commented on the changes life brings and how they’ve all been there for each other every step of the way—and would continue to do so, no matter where they were and how much physical distance was between them.

Jay’s observation speaks to the unpredictability of life , from the minor setbacks to major curveballs everyone faces eventually. But most importantly, the quote gets right to the heart of the show itself—family. Facing those challenges is easier with a loving support system, and for Jay, that’s his entire family, from his wife, Gloria, down to his children and grandchildren, who are all there for him in their own ways.

These happenings blow their cover, alerting the mob to their location. This is bad news for the Blakes, along with Tom Quintiliani (Tommy Lee Jones), the CIA agent assigned to the family, as all try to remain safe when the mafia comes for revenge.

Top 100 Greatest Movie Quotes of All Time (The Ultimate List)

For most of the century, movies have supplanted books, music and radio as the primary force behind the cultural spirit. Television is doing its best to correct this, although, you're more likely to bond with someone, particularly another man, over a shared love of "The Godfather" or "The Matrix" than you are over your favorite book or song. And there's no better way to initiate that bonding than to drop a line, reference a scene or quote an entire monologue from memory. If you guys would like to view my other Top 10/Top 100 lists, feel free to check out my YouTube page and/or my IMDb page at "ChrisWalczyk55."

Most Romantic Movie Quotes of All Time

S ome of the newest additions to the romance genre are cute rom-coms like Netflix's You People and Universal's Ticket to Paradise . These aren't exceptionally unique films within the genre, but they do add to the collection of movies with some of the most beloved tropes. On the other hand, there are far more famous romantic films out there.

While some of the most romantic movies are unexpected, such as cheesy rom-coms like Sweet Home Alabama , others like The Notebook and Titanic are staples that every fan is familiar with. Whether it's from a cute rom-com or a groundbreaking romance, the most romantic quotes in these movies are those that express unwavering love, romantic gestures, and heartfelt realizations.

Updated by Ajay Aravind on November 22, 2023: The romance genre has existed for hundreds of years, although the invention of cinema expanded the genre's scope far beyond books ever could. Some of the greatest romantic movies of all time also have unique quotes. As such, we've updated this article with some more relevant information about the best romantic movie quotes.

"So I Can Kiss You Anytime I Want."

10 Best Female Romantic Comedy Stars

This quote from Sweet Home Alabama might not seem like the most romantic thing ever heard. However, in the context of the story, it is an adorable line. As children, Melanie asks Jake why he would want to marry her, and he replies, " So I can kiss you anytime I want. " While this technically assumes his agency over her, fans don't really see it that way.

This is because Jake asks Melanie the same question at the end of the movie, after they have been reunited as adults. A lifetime love story may seem like a cliché in the romance genre, but it certainly makes for a wholesome, well-rounded ending to Sweet Home Alabama .

Sweet Home Alabama

A young woman who has reinvented herself as a New York City socialite must return home to Alabama to obtain a divorce from her husband after seven years of separation.

"To Me, You Are Perfect."

Love, Actually wasn't positively received among critics, but it is a beloved Christmas romance movie that continues to have a dedicated audience. This is one of the most popular ensemble rom-coms ever, featuring nine different love stories within a two-hour runtime.

Arguably the most adorable scene is with Mark (Andrew Lincoln) and Juliet (Keira Knightley). Though Juliet just married Mark's friend Peter, he brings her a message at the door via cue cards and a boombox. One of the cards reads, " To me, you are perfect. " This line isn't technically spoken, but it's still one of the most heartwarming and bittersweet lines in Love, Actually .

The 10 Best Romantic Ships in Horror The real-life story Titanic is based on is even more heartbreaking than the couple's story in the movie, for obvious reasons. Still, this film succeeded in crafting delightful and well-rounded characters whom the audience would be attached to by the time the ship inevitably hit the iceberg.

Jack says this emotional line when he's in the freezing water of the North Atlantic, close to death. While it's still a hot debate among movie fans if Jack could fit on that piece of debris Rose was floating on, this heart-wrenching scene in Titanic remains one of the most romantic moments in cinematic history.

A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

"You Will Never Age for Me, nor Fade, nor Die."

William shakespeare.

Shakespeare in Love is an unorthodox movie that mixes a fictional retelling of the titular playwright's life with that of a loose Romeo and Juliet adaptation. This creative choice almost makes it seem as though Shakespeare's real-life experiences inspired the historical tragedy.

While the movie is often more humorous than it is outright romantic, the scene in which William and Viola say their goodbyes — and he says this line — is undoubtedly inspiring. That said, Shakespeare in Love is far from historically accurate. And yet, it succeeds in portraying one of the most well-known writers in history in an impactful and loving way.

Shakespeare in Love

The world's greatest ever playwright, William Shakespeare, is young, out of ideas and short of cash, but meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.

10 Biggest Romantic Third Wheels in Film

In the same vein of loose Shakespeare adaptions is the iconic '90s teen rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You . The love story wasn't particularly shocking in this The Taming of the Shrew rendition, but it was far more satisfying than the source material.

After Patrick deceived Kat and broke her heart, she read a poem in English class that ended with this heartfelt line. This is one of the most gripping scenes in a teen romance movie, with Julia Stiles' performance making the audience wholeheartedly believe she was truly heartbroken and in love all at once.

10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" and is a romantic comedy film starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.

Frances "baby" houseman.

Dirty Dancing is more of a coming-of-age narrative than anything else. However, the beloved romance between Johnny and Baby has gone down as one of the most amazing love stories in cinematic history. The star-crossed lovers' trope has been used countlessly in romance movies, but this film proves that it works if done correctly.

Baby says this line to Johnny during an earnest, emotionally driven conversation right before they begin their whirlwind summer romance. The vulnerability and honesty in this Dirty Dancing scene are truly captivating, making it one of the best romance lines in the genre.

Dirty Dancing

Baby meets Johnny, a dance instructor, while on vacation in the Catskills. The romance that erupts is widely considered to be one of cinema's best.

Brokeback Mountain is an iconic Ang Lee movie from the early 2000s, and one of the few solely focusing on the complex romance between two men. While herding sheep on the titular Brokeback Mountain, cowboys Ennis and Jack strike up an emotional relationship that turns sexual. Set in the '60s, this is a heartbreaking love story with both men struggling with their sexuality and love for one another.

In an emotional disagreement between the two, Jack says this line to Ennis, expressing how complicated his feelings are for his lover as well as the emotional hardship of his mindset. Although one of the most moving LGBTQ+ love stories , Brokeback Mountain has a sad ending with one of the most emotional closing scenes in film history.

10 Best British Romantic Comedy Movies

It's no surprise that one of the most famous love stories of all time has one of the most romantic quotes ever. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice plotline is an obvious cliché in the genre today, but it's known for establishing the framework of the classic enemies-to-lovers trope.

In this movie, the independent Elizabeth Bennet begins a complicated relationship with Mr. Darcy due to her parent's insistence on marriage. Mr. Darcy says this quote to Elizabeth in a climactic scene, not only expressing his love for her but finally giving the audience relief from the intense back-and-forth.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice?

Movies adapted from Nicholas Spark novels are occasionally cheesy, but there's no doubt the writer has an exceptional talent for moving romances. In A Walk to Remember , a seemingly ordinary teen romance plot turns into one of the most emotional and devastating romance flicks.

There are many moments throughout A Walk to Remember that can move a viewer to tears, including this internalized line from Landon at the very end of the film. This plot is a representation of everlasting love, emphasized by how he still feels about his first love years after he lost her.

A Walk to Remember

Two North Carolina teens, Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan, are thrown together after Landon gets into trouble and is sentenced to perform community service.

Noah calhoun.

The Notebook further establishes the range of Nicholas Spark's influence on the romance genre. Young Allie and Noah seem like a forever story, but they're split between social classes. After Noah comes back from war, however, their romance slowly rekindles.

This is a unique line in the sense that Noah and Allie are actually arguing at the time, but he manages to still make his speech particularly poignant. This quote from Noah in The Notebook highlights the unpredictability of love and how it doesn't have to be perfect to work

The Notebook

The inter-class romantic affair between Noah and Allie reaches fever pitch after he returns from the Second World War
