movie release 5 november 2021

It’s no exaggeration to say that this November is the biggest month for movies not just this year, but in several years, thanks to the pandemic. The reason is mostly logistics: Some movies slated to come out a year ago are finally hitting theaters, and with the Oscar eligibility window closing at the end of December, film distributors are rushing to put their most impressive films and performers in the spotlight. And of course, the holidays — a prime moviegoing season — are coming too.

So the bounty is impressive, from new MCU installments to the buzziest films from the fall festivals to big, wild-looking period pieces. November will be a great month at the movies, so here are the 14 movies to see.

Release date: November 5

The latest big-screen addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe zooms out — way out. Eternals tells the story of a group of immortal interstellar beings who are sent to earth to protect the planet and its inhabitants from the Deviants, who are their equivalents, but evil. Directed by Chloé Zhao (whose film Nomadland won Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars earlier this year), Eternals jumps around in time and space, a hugely ambitious epic that never really gels narratively but is worth seeing nonetheless. It’s also got a great cast: Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan, Lauren Ridloff, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie play the Eternals.

How to watch it: Eternals will premiere in theaters.

Kristen Stewart is Princess Diana in Spencer — or at least, she’s a version of the icon who left a legend in the wake of her tragic 1997 death. Following his imagination-fueled fantasia on Jackie Kennedy in 2016’s Jackie , director Pablo Larrain returns with a similarly speculative dive into the psyche of the famous princess, right as she’s reaching a breaking point. The film follows Diana through the Christmas holidays with the royal family, often filming Stewart in claustrophobic, panicky frames that give Spencer , at times, the feeling of a horror film. It’s a bit less sly about what it’s up to than Jackie was, and suffers from some ploddingly obvious symbolism. But the spell it casts is murky and laced with dread, and it’s hard to shake after the movie ends.

How to watch it: Spencer will premiere in theaters.

Release date: November 10

Rebecca Hall wrote and directed this adaptation of Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel, which is about two childhood friends who encounter one another again in adulthood. Irene (Tessa Thompson), who goes by Reeny, lives with her doctor husband (André Holland) and their children in a stately Harlem house. Clare (Ruth Negga) is married to a racist businessman (Alexander Skarsgård), who has no idea that his wife is not white. The film feels almost dreamlike, evoking a world in which the lines that separate friendship from desire, love from hate, and white from Black are more permeable than you might expect — a world a lot like today’s.

How to watch it: Passing , which is playing in limited theaters, begins streaming on Netflix on November 10.

Release date: November 12

Belfast , Kenneth Branagh’s unabashedly sentimental dip into his youthful memories of strife during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, is really a family drama told from a small boy’s perspective. The boy’s parents (Jamie Dornan and Caitríona Balfe) are Protestant Belfast natives who watch their Catholic neighbors become the target of violence, struggling to keep their family together as they weigh whether their future lies in Belfast with his grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds) or elsewhere. The boy himself, Branagh’s avatar Buddy (Jude Hill), catches glimpses of the big world outside the family’s corner of Belfast at the movies and on stage. Belfast is in black and white, but Branagh often renders what they’re watching, from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to a staged production of A Christmas Carol , in color. The stories we watch, Branagh reminds us, are a vibrant window onto life, even during dark times.

How to watch it: Belfast will open in theaters on November 12.

Indelible, gutting, and hopeful, Procession is a documentary unlike anything you’ve seen before. The filmmakers, led by director Robert Greene, reached out to six men in the Kansas City, Missouri, area who were abused as boys by Catholic priests and clergy. Rather than proceeding as an exposé, Procession is a collaborative project in healing, as each of the six men creates and films traumatic memories in a drama therapy-informed quest to ... well, what, exactly? That’s what they’re exploring: the meaning of healing, the ways we perform to cope and to crack ourselves open, and the possibilities, such as they are, for redemption. It’s a must-see.

How to watch it: Procession will open in limited theaters on November 12 and begin streaming on Netflix on November 19.

Tick, Tick... Boom!

Lin-Manuel Miranda steps behind the camera for Tick, Tick... Boom! , a film adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Rent composer Jonathan Larson. Andrew Garfield plays Larson, who is closing in on his 30th birthday and increasingly terrified that he’s running out of time to actually break into the musical theater world. The real Larson wrote Tick, Tick... Boom! a few years before Rent made him famous, and thus only a few years before he died unexpectedly of an undiagnosed heart condition. That backstory makes Tick, Tick... Boom! all the more poignant — and the film adaptation will likely draw in a new generation of fans.

How to watch it: Tick, Tick... Boom! will open in limited theaters on November 12 and begin streaming on Netflix on November 19.

The Power of the Dog

Release date: November 17

Jane Campion’s first film since 2009’s Bright Star is The Power of the Dog , and it is set, despite its New Zealand shooting location, in the American West. For most of its runtime, The Power of the Dog is confined to the big ranch that Phil and George (Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons) own and operate. George marries Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and brings her there, along with her waifish teenage son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Phil despises both of the ranch’s new residents. But people’s exteriors rarely match what they’re capable of inside. The Power of the Dog will keep you guessing as it morphs from a Western to a romance to something deliciously dark, a melodrama with an eerie bite and sweeping, craggy vistas.

How to watch it: The Power of the Dog will premiere in theaters on November 17 and begin streaming on Netflix on December 1.

C’mon C’mon

Release date: November 19

Joaquin Phoenix stars in C’mon C’mon, the sensitive and huge-hearted new movie from Mike Mills (whose last film was 20th Century Women ). Phoenix is Johnny, an artist interviewing young people around the US about the future: what they hope for, what they dream of, what they fear. But when his semi-estranged sister (Gaby Hoffmann) suddenly has to attend to an emergency, he ends up caring for his precocious and eccentric 9-year-old nephew Jesse (Woody Norman), and both of them learn a lot from one another. The premise of C’mon C’mon could easily swing into way-too-precious territory, but Mills’s steady hand and feeling for story rhythms, along with Phoenix’s performance, keep the ship on course. The result is a warm and winsome meditation on the ties that bind us.

How to watch it: C’mon C’mon will premiere in theaters.

King Richard

Will Smith stars in King Richard as Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus Williams (Demi Singleton) and Serena Williams (Saniyya Sidney). Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, it’s a biopic centering on Richard’s “unconventional” methods in helping two of his daughters reach the top of their game. It’s just the kind of crowd-pleasing, family-friendly sports movie that tends to do well during the holiday season. While the Williams family was involved with the production, it’s still not totally clear why Richard is at the center (rather than, for instance, both parents, who were equally involved in their daughters’ early careers). But with a cast that also includes Aunjanue Ellis as the girls’ mother Oracene Price and Tony Goldwyn and Jon Bernthal as their coaches, it seems destined for the awards-season stage.

How to watch it: King Richard will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max.

Drive My Car

Release date: November 24

Ryusuke Hamaguchi directed and co-wrote the screenplay for Drive My Car , which is based on a Haruki Murakami short story. The film centers on Yūsuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a theater director who returns home one day to find that his wife Oto (Reika Kirishima), a TV executive, has died. Then time jumps forward, and Kafuku is directing a production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya , with each actor performing in their own language. He decides to cast his wife’s lover, Takatsuki (Masaki Okada), in the main role. Through rehearsals and the relationships that develop during the project — including with Misaki (Toko Miura), the quiet young woman hired to drive him to and from the theater — Kafuku starts to understand something that’s nearly ineffable about his past and his future. Drive My Car is a melancholy, meaningful film, occupied with friendships, old wounds, and the task of continuing to live.

How to watch it: Drive My Car will premiere in theaters.

Encanto is the animated musical tale of the Madrigals, a Colombian family who all have magical powers and live in an enchanted mountain town. Every member of the family has a singular talent except Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz), who is pretty frustrated about this state of affairs. Then, one day, she discovers that her family’s magic may be under threat, and she must go on a journey to save both the magic and her family’s home. With additional voice work from John Leguizamo, María Cecilia Botero, Diane Guerrero, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, Wilmer Valderrama, Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, and Maluma, and songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Encanto seems like the perfect family film for the holiday season.

How to watch it: Encanto will premiere in theaters.

House of Gucci

Ridley Scott’s second movie this year (the other was The Last Duel ) is House of Gucci , starring Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci, head of the legendary Gucci fashion house, and Lady Gaga as his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. The film follows the murder of Gucci in 1995 and the events that took place afterward, and features — among other things — absolutely fabulous costume design. With Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino, and Salma Hayek (who, incidentally, is married to the current head of Gucci) among the cast and a juicy true-crime story at its core, House of Gucci is certain to be, at minimum, a lot of fun at the movies.

How to watch it: House of Gucci will premiere in theaters.

Stephen Karam’s play The Humans won a Tony and was a finalist for the Pulitzer, and it turns out it makes a great movie, too. Karam adapted and directed the film, which stars a terrific cast — Richard Jenkins, Jayne Houdyshell (who reprises her Broadway role), Beanie Feldstein, Amy Schumer, Steven Yeun, and June Squibb — as a family who’ve gathered in one daughter’s rickety new Chinatown apartment for Thanksgiving. Over the course of the evening, conversations start to hint at what’s right about this family and what’s gone very wrong. The film is funny and raw, full of the kinds of things families say to one another at holidays, and Karam’s use of space keeps the adaptation from feeling too much like just a filmed play. It’s haunting, a little hopeful, and very, very honest.

How to watch it: The Humans will premiere in theaters.

Licorice Pizza

Release date: November 26

Paul Thomas Anderson follows up 2017’s Phantom Thread with Licorice Pizza , a romantic coming-of-age story set in 1973 about two young people, played by singer Alana Haim, of the band Haim, and Cooper Hoffman, son of frequent Anderson collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman. Anderson is famously tight-lipped about the details of his plots before his films premiere, but the trailer for Licorice Pizza set the internet ablaze, in part because of its cast: Tom Waits, Sean Penn, Benny Safdie, Maya Rudolph, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Ben Stiller, John C. Reilly, Christine Ebersole, and Bradley Cooper in bombastic mode as a film producer named Jon Peters, who may or may not be based on the real guy . And who doesn’t love a drama about the glories and disappointments of first love?

How to watch it: Licorice Pizza will open in limited theaters on November 26 and widely on December 22.

Share All sharing options for: The 27 new movie releases to check out this fall

What a difference a year makes. Last fall, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic sent shockwaves through the movie industry. Studios pushed back some of the season’s biggest premieres to 2021 or indefinitely halted production all together as movie-going audiences sheltered in place. The upheaval resulted in a year of “lost” releases. Except for Tenet ... which really came out last August. Wild.

A year later, conditions are at once both radically different and much the same. The development and subsequent rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine has given some studios the confidence to move forward with their fall premiere plans, though a rise in cases tied to the COVID Delta variant has forced both filmgoers and studios to make the calculated decision of where and how to watch this year’s most anticipated new releases, if at all. But off the theatrical success of Marvel’s Shang-Chi over Labor Day weekend, many studios are prepared to move forward with the release schedule — and lean on streaming like never before.

To that end, here’s a list of what movies are playing in wide release this fall, from theater-only screenings to streaming exclusives and everything in-between. There’s a wealth of exciting new films to watch this season, here’s what you should keep your eyes out for.

The Card Counter

Oscar Isaac as William Tell in The Card Counter

Paul Schrader follows his 2018 spiritual drama First Reformed with a moody vehicle for Oscar Isaac. The actor plays William Tell, an ex-military interrogator-turned-gambler who makes it his personal mission to reform a troubled young man (Tye Sheridan) out for revenge against Major John Gordo (Willem Dafoe). With the backing of La Linda (Tiffany Haddish), Tell and his protege set out on the road with their sights set on winning the World Series of poker in Las Vegas. Having screened out of festivals, early word is that Schrader has once again delivered a gnarly human drama. Vulture critic Alison Wilmore wrote in her review :

William recognizes the puerility of Cirk’s dead-end mission, and without acknowledging the degree it’s also his, dedicates himself to helping the young man move on. The Card Counter takes place in a punishing world of windowless casinos, hotel ballrooms, and highways devoid of scenery — a vision of the America used to justify the actions that now so traumatize William, that is intentionally bereft of poetry until La Linda takes William to a park illuminated by Christmas lights. If it’s not a country worth losing your soul for, it’s also not one that will pay any mind to a life spent wallowing in angst over it, either.

In theaters on Sept. 10

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Miku Martineau in Kate

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars in the Atomic Blonde -meets- Crank revenge action thriller Kate as a preternaturally gifted assassin who is poisoned by her employers and sets out on a 24-hour manhunt to exact revenge on those who betrayed her. As her body rapidly deteriorates under the effects of the poison, Kate forms an unlikely bond with Ani (Miku Patricia Martineau), the teenage daughter of one of her past targets. With nothing left to lose, Kate embarks on one last self-appointed mission of retribution.

Streaming on Netflix on Sept. 10

sideways shot of Annabelle Wallis as Madison lit in red as a mysterious shadow hovers over her bed in Malignant

Saw and Insidious director James Wan returns to the horror genre with Malignant , his latest psychological horror thriller starring Annabelle Wallis ( Peaky Blinders ). The film follows Madison (Wallis), a young woman inexplicably wracked by debilitating visions and nightmares of people being brutally murdered. Except ... the visions are real. In order to stop the killer and save her own life, Madison delves into the long dormant secrets of her past and face her darkest fears. If this has anywhere close to the energy of Wan’s Insidious , audiences are sure to be in for a horror film that keep their hearts racing and make it just a whee bit harder to fall asleep at night.

In theaters and on HBO Max on Sept. 10

WINSLOW FEGLEY as ALEX, LIDYA JEWETT as YASMIN in NIGHTBOOKS.

If you’re hungry for a retro-themed horror fantasy in the vein of 2019’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or Leigh Janiak’s Fear Street trilogy, David Yarovesky’s Nightbooks should sate your appetite. Based on the J. A. White’s children’s book of the same name, the film stars Winsolw Fegley ( Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made ) as Alex, a precocious young boy with an obsession with scary stories who is abducted by a nefarious witch (Krysten Ritter) and imprisoned in her magical apartment. Forced to tell a scary story every night or face horrific consequences, Alex must team up with his fellow prisoner Yasmin (Lidya Jewett) to escape the witch’s grasp and safely return home.

Streaming on Netflix on Sept. 15

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Max Harwood in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

In director Jonathan Butterell’s film adaptation of Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae’s award-winning coming-of-age stage musical, Max Harwood stars as Jamie New, a 16-year-old teenager from a blue collar English town who just doesn’t quite fit in. Spurned by his teachers and ostracized by his peers, Jamie nonetheless remains determined to pursue his dream of become a proud drag queen. With the support of his best friend Pritti (Lauren Patel), his mother (Sarah Lancashire), and his mentor Loco Chanelle (Richard E. Grant), Jamie defies his naysayers and inspires his community across several colorful music numbers in a story about remaining true to yourself even (and especially) when it’s hard.

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 17

Prisoners of the Ghostland

Nicolas Cage and Tak Sakaguchi face off in Prisoners of the Ghostland

Nicolas Cage (Mandy, Jiu Jitsu ) stars in Japanese provocateur Sio Sono’s neo-noir western action film Prisoners of the Ghostland as Hero, a notorious criminal imprisoned in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town who is hired by a wealthy warlord known as The Governor (Bill Moseley) to rescue his adopted granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) in exchange for his freedom. Fitted with a set of explosive devices fitted to his neck, arms, and ahem other areas, Hero ventures into the dark parallel universe known as the Ghostland and break a terrible curse that imprisons both Bernice and countless others. We caught this wild movie out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival , so here’s a taste of what to expect:

Let’s not underestimate Cage. He rises to Sono’s level. Sporting strange sprayed-on Ken-doll makeup and Lee Marvin killer energy, Cage becomes a living action figure. He even has kung-fu grip ! In a third-act sequence, Cage (or at least a spot-on body double in armor) goes toe-to-toe with the head samurai, delivering moves that keep up with the kinetic camerawork. If only Sono had found more for Boutella to do, Prisoners of the Ghostland might have achieved instant cult status. With action credits like Kingsman , Atomic Blonde , and Star Trek Beyond to her name, she’s more than capable of executing stunts and choreography. Sono loses her in Cage’s shadow, but again, she can really make that gatling gun sing.

In theaters and on VOD on Sept. 17

The Many Saints of Newark

movie release 5 november 2021

David Chase’s The Many Saints of Newark , a prequel to The Sopranos , follows a young Anthony “Tony” Soprano through his formative years as a young gangster working for his uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola). As rival crime families rise up to wrest apart the powerful DiMeo family’s stranglehold over the tumultuous race-torn city, Dickie’s actions and decisions in the face of these challenging times will leave a profound and lasting impression on his young nephew and play an inevitable role in shaping him into the ruthless crime boss he will one day become.

In theaters and streaming on HBO Max on Oct. 1

A young woman straddles atop a neon-painted car hood in Titane

Raw director Julia Ducournau returns with another raucous body horror-thriller in the form of her sophomore feature, Titane . The film stars Agathe Rouselle as a young girl who survives a horrific car crash and has a titanium plate fitted inside her skull. Featuring murder, sex, impregnation by vehicles, and love borne out of deception, with a premise that sounds like head-on collision between David Cronenberg’s Crash and 2012’s The Imposter, Titane won the Palme d’Or during its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this past July and seems all but poised to become this year’s most talked-about film.

In theaters on Oct. 1

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

The symbiote Carnage roars with tentacles drawn in Venom: Let There Be Carnage,

Tom Hardy returns as the down on his luck reporter-turned-symbiote-infused-vigilante Venom in Venom: Let There Be Carnage . Directed by Andy Serkis (yes, that Andy Serkis), the film follows Eddie Brock (Hardy) as he attempts to reinvigorate his career by interviewing the notorious serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson). Still struggling to adjust to his life as the human host for the sentient symbiote Venom, Eddie will have to face off against a slobbering new nemesis, Carnage. The film was originally slated to premiere in September, but was delayed to October due to renewed concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic .

No Time To Die

Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas as James Bond and CIA agent Paloma in No Time to Die

Daniel Craig returns for his final outing as 007 in director Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die , the 25th installment in the James Bond film series. Set five years after the events of 2015’s Spectre , the film follows the now-retired MI6 agent as he is enlisted in the search for a missing scientist named Valdo Obruchev. Bond’s search for answers thrusts him into the crosshairs of a dangerous new nemesis in the form of Lytusifer Safin (Rami Malek), as well as old friends and adversaries alike. Featuring returning performances by Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes, as well as new appearances by Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas, No Time to Die will finally see its long-awaited premiere in theaters this fall after being delayed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

In theaters on Oct. 8

Noomi Rapace holding a lamb-headed child in Lamb

Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snaer Gudnason play a childless couple, who discover a mysterious lamb-headed newborn in Valdimar Jóhannsson’s supernatural drama Lamb . Adopting the child and raising it as their own, the couple’s newfound happiness is nevertheless assailed from both within and outside their idyllic Icelandic farm. Like most A24 films, it looks impeccably well-shot and deeply sinister. I am absolutely terrified both for and of that child.

Halloween Kills

Halloween Kills: Michael Myers stands at the top of the stairs

Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode in Halloween Kills , the 12th installment in the long running Halloween horror franchise. Taking place directly after the events of 2018’s Halloween — that movie being a canon-scrubbing sequel to John Carpenter’s original 1978 film — Strode and her family must continue to fend off the relentless murder spree of Michael Myers with the help of the Haddonfield community. Will Michael finally, finally die this time? Probably not, because director David Gordon Green is rounding out his reboot/sequel series with a third movie Halloween Ends , but we bet this one’s a spooky time at the movies anyway.

In theaters on Oct. 15

The Last Duel

Jodie Comer as Marguerite de Thibouville in The Last Duel.

Good Will Hunting duo Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have written another movie ... and wisely hired Nicole Holofcener ( Walking and Talking ) to help them grapple with a challenging subject matter. Set in 14th-century France, The Last Duel follows the story of Marguerite de Thibouville (Jodie Comer), wife of knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon). After accusing de Carrouges’s best friend Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) of rape, the two men engage in trial by combat in the last legally sanctioned duel in France’s history. Directed by Ridley Scott with beautiful cinematography courtesy of Dariusz Wolski and supporting performances by Affleck and Alex Lawther as Count Pierre d’Alençon and King Charles VI respectively, The Last Duel by all appearances looks like a historical drama destined for award buzz.

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Rebecca Furguson as Lady Jessica Atreides stand in the desert on the set of Denis Villenueve’s Dune.

Set thousands of years in the future, Denis Villenueve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s celebrated sci-fi epic Dune stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, son and heir to the powerful Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac), who is haunted by strange and vivid dreams related to some great, yet unknown destiny. Assuming stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis, colloquially known as Dune, the Atreides must contend with not only the challenges of their dangerous new terrain but the treachery of the Harkonnens, their centuries-long adversaries and Dune’s former stewards led by the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). Can Villeneuve’s film succeed where David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s efforts fell short and deliver an adaptation worthy of its source material? We got an early look at the film out of the Venice Film Festival and signs point to yes.

In theaters and streaming on HBO Max on Oct. 15

The French Dispatch

Bill Murray and other cast in The French Dispatch.

Wes Anderson’s latest film is a self-described “ A love letter to journalists ,” inspired by the director’s love of The New Yorker and following the stories of American newspaper outpost based in the in the fictional French city of “Ennui-sur-Blasé.” Featuring performances by Benicio del Toro, Owen Wilson, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Liev Schrieber, Timothée Chalamet, Frances McDormand, Léa Seydoux, Bill Murray, and many more, The French Dispatch (alternatively titled The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun ) sounds as be as offbeat, hilarious, and whimsically idiosyncratic as any of Anderson’s films at his best.

In theaters on Oct. 22

Last Night in Soho

Anya Taylor-Joy, lit in neon blue and terrified, in Last Night in Soho

Thomasin McKenzie ( Old ) stars in Edgar Wright’s psychological horror thriller Last Night in Soho as Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer who finds herself miraculously transported to the 1960s where she vicariously inhabits the life of a dazzling lounge singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). It’s not long before Eloise’s lucid escapades morph into insidious sojourns into a dark and terrifying world of waking nightmares.

Black Mass director Scott Cooper’s supernatural horror thriller Antlers stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons as Julia and Paul Meadows, a school teacher and sheriff of a small town in Oregon, who become embroiled in a desperate fight to protect a young child (Jeremy T. Thomas) who is secretly harboring a malevolent, ancestral creature inside his house. It looks terrifying, and Guillermo del Toro’s name as a producer goes a long way.

The Harder They Fall

movie release 5 november 2021

Starring an ensemble cast including Regina King, Delroy Linkdo, Idris Elba, LaKeith Stanfield and more, and produced by none other than Jay-Z, Jeymes Samuel’s (aka The Bullitts) feature length debut The Harder They Fall is a contemporary Black Western worth getting excited for. When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers his longtime nemesis Rufus Black (Elba) has escaped from prison, he’ll have to reunite his old gang in order enact revenge on Rufus and his cohorts. Expect a whole lot of shootouts, anachronisms, and impeccably sleek-looking leather dusters.

Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Ma Dong-seok, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, and Lia McHugh in Eternals (2021)

Chloe Zhao’s Eternals introduces longtime MCU fans to its titular cast of interstellar guardians ( not to be confused of with the Guardians of the Galaxy, of course). Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame , an immortal alien race who have been living on Earth secretly for thousands of years rise up to defend the planet against a grave threat in the form of their immortal enemies, the Deviants. Starring Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie, the film is sure to have major consequence in the lead up to Spider-Man: No Way Home and next year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness .

In theaters on Nov. 5

Finch (Tom Hanks) walks besides his robot Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones).

Though science fiction isn’t something for which he’s particular well known for, Tom Hanks proved his skills as a dramatic performer could translate to the genre through his work on 2012’s Cloud Atlas . Finch, the feature debut of Game of Thrones director and soon-to-be House of the Dragon showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, sees Hanks once again dipping his toes back into sci-fi, this time as one of the last surviving men on the planet who invents a robot companion named Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) before embarking on a journey across the country. There’s no footage released as of yet, but the look of Hanks’ funky shirt and his robot pal it seems like it’ll be fun, weird, and soul-stirring adventure.

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer

Kristen Stewart is a far way away nowadays from her days as a Twilight starlet, having proven her chops as a dramatic actress with engrossing performances in films like 2016’s Personal Shopper and 2020’s Underwater . With Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama Spencer , Stewart takes on her most challenging and multifaceted role yet as Princess Diana in the midst of her impending divorce from Prince Charles. The cinematography in the film’s trailer, courtesy of Portrait of a Lady on Fire ’s Claire Mathon, looks sumptuous and bathed in an ethereal glow of washed out hues, and Stewart’s resemblance to the late Princess of Wales in her heyday is uncanny. If Larraín’s work on 2016’s Jackie is any indication, Stewart could very well be set for a Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson in Passing

Rebecca Hall’s adaptation of Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel Passing stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga as Irene and Clare, two childhood friends from a mixed-race background who reunite in adulthood. While Irene openly identifies as a black woman, Clare as manage to live a life “passing” as a white woman in an attempt to circumvent the institutional prejudices of her time. Larsen’s novel is acclaimed for its nuanced portrayal of social malleability of race as a form of both performance and innate identity. Hall, miraculously, captures it with surgical precision and immaculate black and white photography. Passing was the big surprise of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and shouldn’t be missed when it slips on to streaming later this year.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Mckenna Grace wearing goggles and Finn Wolfhard firing a proton pack in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

When you’re (once again) trying to reboot the Ghostbusters movie franchise, who ya gonna call? Jason Reitman apparently, that’s who! Set 30 years after the events of Ghostbusters 2 , Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Carrie Coon as Callie, a single mother and daughter of the late Dr. Egon Spengler. After moving to her family’s decrepit farmhouse in Oklahoma, her daughter Phoebe ( I, Tonya’s Mckenna Grace) and son Trevor ( Stranger Things ’ Finn Wolfhard) discover their grandfather’s legacy and set out to resolve a paranormal disturbance that threatens to endanger the entire world.

In theaters on Nov. 11

Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson wearing formal attire in Red Notice

Dwayne Johnson stars in yet another high-octane action thriller as a law enforcer working alongside a former (?) criminal to take down a mutual adversary, but this time wholly unrelated to the Fast and Furious franchise! Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Red Notice follows FBI Agent John Hartley on his mission to track down and apprehend Sarah Black (Gal Gadot) and Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds), two notorious criminals that vie to compete across several high-profile heists across the globe. The tone of the trailer feels similiar in the vein of The Hitman’s Bodyguard meets the aforementioned Hobbes & Shaw , with Reynolds playing the comic relief foil to Johnson’s more steely by-the-books persona. This looks like a blast, especially with Gadot serving up some serious Carmen Sandiego vibes.

Streaming on Netflix on Nov. 12

Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) holding a colorful gift basket while surrounded by a group of children.

You know what it feels like to not feel special? Encanto ’s Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) sure does. Set in a fantastical version of Colombia, Lilo & Stitch director Byron Howard and Zootopia co-director Jared Bush’s musical fantasy comedy centers on the Madrigals, a family in which each member is gifted with a dazzling magical ability like super strength, shapeshifting, or the power to conjure rainbows — all except for Mirabel, the sole “ordinary” member of the family. Obviously, what makes a person “special” is more or less a subject of perception, and Mirabel’s journey to find her place among her siblings will most likely yield a powerful message that what makes one exceptional is not always what is seen on the outside. With original music by Hamilton ’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and gorgeous visuals, Encanto looks like a dazzling feel-good animated film for the whole family.

In theaters on Nov. 24

House of Gucci

Adam Driver and Lady Gaga in House of Gucci

Ridley Scott’s second feature film of 2021 — the filmmaker is 83, by the way — centers on the life and death of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), the Italian businessman and namesake of the international fashion house Gucci. Playing opposite of Driver is Lady Gaga ( A Star Is Born ) in the role of Gucci’s ex-wife (and the chief conspirator behind his murder) Patrizia Reggiani. Jared Leto looks ridiculous as Maurizio’s cousin Paolo Gucci, and the picturesque villas and neon-lit nightclubs look appropriately luxurious and decadent. If the trailer is any indication, fans of Lady Gaga and similar fare like 2018’s The Assassination of Giani Versace are sure to love this one.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy from the Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City movie

Director Johannes Roberts’ ( 47 Meters Down ) reboot of the Resident Evil film franchise draws more explicitly from the source material of Capcom’s long-running horror series than Paul W. S. Anderson’s 7-film saga. Based on the first two installments in the videogame franchise (and inspired by John Carpenter’s Assult on Precint 13), Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City follows the origin stories of Claire (Kaya Scodelario) and Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), and Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia) as they attempt to survive in the aftermath of a horrific zombie infestation brought about by the machinations of the mysterious Umbrella Corporation.

Here are the most definite Marvel movies and shows in the MCU's Multiverse Saga that are currently in the works:

We've known for a while that Ryan Reynolds is producing and starring in a third Deadpool movie, the first in the series to be officially connected to the MCU. But Reynolds dropped a real bombshell out of nowhere when he tweeted a teaser video for this currently untitled sequel . Not only is it hitting theaters in 2024, but Hugh Jackman is coming back to play Wolverine once again. It turns out 2017's Logan won't be Jackman's final time unsheathing his claws after all.

Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness was one of the most beloved parts of WandaVision, and she will be returning in her own spin-off series on Disney+. WandaVision's Jac Schaefer will serve as executive producer and head writer.

X-Men '97 is a revival of the original X-Men: The Animated Series from the 1990s that will continue right where that storyline left off. The Wrap has also reported that many of the original voice actors from the first show will be returning to their characters, including Wolverine's Cal Dodd, Rogue's Lenore Zann, Beast's George Buza, and more. In addition to familiar voices, Jennifer Hale, Ray Chase, and many more will join the cast. Beau DeMayo will serve as executive producer and head writer.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the press were treated to a first look at the series and saw many of the returning characters, including Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Jubilee, and Cyclops. Magneto also made an appearance and said, "You’re looking at the new leader of the X-Men." It was also revealed Cable, Bishop, Forge, Morph, Nightcrawler, and Sunspot would be returning as well.

On the villain front, the panel showed off various Sentinels, Mr. Sinister, White Queen, and Sebastian Shaw of the Hellfire Club.

The Spider-Man Movies in (Chronological) Order

movie release 5 november 2021

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (formerly titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year) is an upcoming animated series that "follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots." It is yet unclear if Tom Holland will be reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in this series, but it is known that Jeff Trammel will serve as both executive producer and head writer.

The series is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2024 and will feature Charlie Cox's Daredevil, Dr. Octavius, Chameleon, Speed Demon, Scorpion, Butane the Pyromaniac, Harry Osborn, and Amadeus Cho.

It has also been confirmed that a second season of the show is also in the works.

The same day The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's final episode debuted, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that a fourth Captain America movie was in the works with director Julius Onah and showrunner Malcolm Spellman co-writing the screenplay with TFATWS staff writer Dalan Musson.

Since then, and several release date changes, it has been officially confirmed that Captain America: Brave New World (formerly subtitled New World Order) will be released in theaters on February 14, 2025, and will be the first solo film starring Anthony Mackie as a new take on the iconic hero.

In June of 2022, reports emerged that director Jake Schreier (Robot & Frank) had been lined up by Marvel to direct a Thunderbolts movie, which has been in development with Black Widow writer Eric Pearson scripting. In the comics, the Thunderbolts are typically portrayed as a team of antiheroes. At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it was confirmed that Thunderbolts would be released in theaters on July 26, 2024, and will mark the end of Phase 5 of the MCU. And at D23 a couple of months later, Kevin Feige confirmed the following line-up for the film: Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour's Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen's Ghost, Wyatt Russell's US Agent, Olga Kurylenko's Taskmaster, Florence Pugh's Black Widow/Yelena Belova, and Sebastian Stan's Bucky/Winter Soldier. Since then, however, the film was pushed back to December 20, 2024 and most recently to May 2, 2025.

movie release 5 november 2021

At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said that X-Men and Fantastic Four were on the way to the MCU in some form. Nothing has been confirmed since regarding a live-action X-Men project, but in a Disney investors call in December, 2020, Feige confirmed that a FF movie was in the works from Spider-Man 1-3 director Jon Watts. However, in April, 2022, the news broke that Watts was stepping away from the film and the hunt for a new director was underway. Now WandaVision's Matt Shakmnan is helming the film.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it was confirmed that Fantastic Four would begin Phase 5 of the MCU on November 8, 2024, and begin the final journey towards the end of The Multiverse Saga with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Since then, the release has been pushed back several months to July 25, 2025. In February 2025 we finally got confirmation of the film's main cast - Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing and Joseph Quinn as Human Torch.

Blade will be returning to the big screen, starring Mahershala Ali. Besides a quick voice cameo in Eternals, we have yet to learn anything more about Ali's Blade. Marvel originally revealed a November 3, 2023 release date at SDCC 2022. Since then, however, the film has pushed back to February 14, 2025 and then to November 7, 2025, as production has reportedly halted due to Ali's dissatisfaction with the script and the departure of director Bassam Tariq. The WGA strike also delayed the start of production.

The particulars of this film are in flux now that Marvel has parted ways with Jonathan Majors in the wake of his being found guilty of assault and harassment. Will his character, Kang the Conqueror, be recast or continue in some other way? We don't know at this point, but originally Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was meant to be the next Avengers film, with Avengers: Secret Wars bringing an end to The Multiverse Saga and Phase 6 of the MCU.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be released in theaters on May 1, 2026. We'll see if that sticks.

Avengers: Secret Wars will mark the end of both Phase 6 of the MCU and the entire Multiverse Saga that encompasses Phases 4, 5, and 6. It will arrive almost exactly a year after Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on May 7, 2027. It will also be the big screen adaptation of the beloved Secret Wars comic run that saw the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men team up to stop an unimaginable threat.

Ironheart will see Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart, a "genius inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man." While there is no release date for Ironheart, Williams made her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the comics, Williams was an engineering prodigy who used Stark's digitized consciousness as an AI to teach her to be the best Ironheart she can be. With the suit, she can fly and shoot repulsor grenades, laser beams, precision missiles, and much more.

In May of 2022, Variety reported that a new Daredevil series was in the works from writer/executive producers Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Covert Affairs). When Charlie Cox reprised his Netflix/Marvel take on Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio did the same for Kingpin/Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye, it seemed clear that Marvel had plans for those popular versions of the characters to continue under the Marvel Studios banner. Later, Cox also showed up in the DD costume on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022 it was confirmed Daredevil: Born Again was in the works for Disney+, though reports indicate that it had to stop production due to the Hollywood strikes as well as a creative overhaul .

Following an introduction in the first season of Marvel's What If...?, Marvel Zombies will be a new animated series that "reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge." The show will be directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it was revealed that Marvel Zombies will not only feature undead versions of Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Ghost, Abomination, Captain Marvel, and Okoye, but it will also include new heroes that are very much alive like Yelena, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel.

All marvel movies releasing in 2024.

The Marvel movies releasing in 2024 offer a range of film experiences - and some confusion, due to the changed dates of several incoming installments.

  • Only one MCU movie will release in 2024, but Marvel has other titles on the slate.
  • Changes in release dates for Marvel movies have occurred due to reorganizing and the effects of strikes, but the current lineup still shows promise.
  • Deadpool 3, with its star-studded cast and potential multiverse-related plot, has the potential to be 2024's biggest superhero movie.

Between Sony and the MCU, there is a number of exciting Marvel movies releasing in 2024. While the MCU is the first thing that comes to mind to most moviegoers when it comes to Marvel, the release of movies like Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse have provided a first-hand look at the idea that other Marvel movies can have phenomenal success, making 2024's release roster all the more hotly anticipated. However, recent Marvel movie configurations have left how many movies actually release in 2024 a little more confusing than it may have previously appeared.

Various Marvel movies and shows have seen their release dates change as a result of inner reorganizing and the effects of the SAG-AFTRA strikes, which delayed a number of impending installments. These factors have meant some movies saw drastic changes, either being moved from 2023 into 2024, moved far further into 2024, or - in an unusual case - actually brought forward as a result. While the roster of Marvel movies releasing in 2024 has seen some notable alterations, the current lineup still holds a lot of promise, and should provide audiences a stellar variety of film experiences.

10 Best MCU Moments Of 2023

Deadpool 3 - july 26, 2024, deadpool & wolverine.

Deadpool 3 will mark a new era for the MCU, with the movie set to be the first time Marvel Studios reintroduces a Fox character as the lead of an MCU movie. The movie marks the return of not only Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, but also Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, despite the actor saying he was done with the role in the past. Deadpool 3 releases on July 26, 2024 , after being pushed back from a prior date of May 3, 2024, which itself was an alternate date, as the film's initial scheduled release was November 8, 2024.

However, despite this pushback, Deadpool 3 has a huge chance of being next year's biggest superhero movie release - in part because it's currently Disney's only 2024 MCU movie, with Captain America; Brave New World and Thunderbolts being moved to the 2025 window. Ultimately, it appears this may be a wise move, as the announcement of these schedule alterations came after the conclusion of the Hollywood strikes, suggesting these decisions were made so that the films can have a full production time without being rushed.

Deadpool 3 's star-studded cast also includes the returns of franchise players Leslie Uggams as Blind Al and Karan Soni as Dopinder, plus the additions of Emma Corrin ( The Crown ) and Matthew Macfadyen ( Succession ) in undisclosed roles. Stranger Things ' Shawn Levy directs the movie, based on a script from Deadpool franchise writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The movie is rumored to feature a multiverse-related plot with Loki 's Time Variance Authority and Owen Wilson's Mobius showing up to capture Deadpool. The crossover of the Fox X-Men and MCU franchises on Deadpool 3 has built great anticipation for the Marvel film and the comic book giant's future.

Kraven The Hunter - August 30, 2024

The last of 2024's Sony Spider-Man Universe movies sees Kraven the Hunter release on August 30, 2024 , after being pushed notably back from its previous release date of October 3, 2023. While this is a move that could sabotage any hype already built up, it's also one that may work in the film's overall benefit, as its initial closer proximity to the infamous Morbius drew jokes that may be avoided with a later release.

Spider-Man won't appear in Kraven: The Hunter , but Aaron Taylor-Johnson has said he would like to face Spidey in a Kraven's Last Hunt sequel.

And a positive reception is crucial here, as Kraven the Hunter's plot provides an altered origin story for Aaron Taylor-Johnson's version of the titular Spider-Man villain that could be intended to spawn its own distinct series. Indeed, this decision appears intended to make Kraven a prospective antihero in the Sony live-action movie universe, potentially even leading into a Sinister Six installment should the film do well enough.

Venom 3 - November 8, 2024

Venom 3 is set for a November 8, 2024 release, after being moved back from its original June 24, 2024 release. Venom 3 can not only flesh out whether this moment was a fun crossover moment or something more, but also shed light on what Sony's Marvel universe is set to look like, as the third movie in the most successful series of Sony's live-action Spider-Man universe.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse also hints at Venom 3 potentially having a more multiverse-leaning plot, with its villain traveling into the Venom world to interact with Mrs. Chen, the convenience store owner in both released live-action movies. Whether the film will capitalize on its two multiverse crossover moments it yet to be seen, as little is known about the Venom 3 story, and only Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock is currently confirmed in terms of characters, though Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor are cast in undisclosed roles.

A teaser showing Tom Hardy screaming at graffiti of a dog has led to theories regarding the plot, however. Fans have speculated this teases either that Venom 3 will involve the Lobo Cartel - a gang of werewolves from the comics - or otherwise feature Eddie Brock and Venom hunting another dangerous symbiote. This said, it's also possible the tease simply serves to promise more unhinged antihero action, which is also a promising prospect by itself.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse - TBD

Miles Morales in front of the Spider-Man Beyond The Spider-Verse logo.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

Initially conceived as two parts of the same movie, the next two entries in Sony's Academy Award-winning animated Spider-Verse movie franchise were separated, with Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse releasing June 2023 to massive critical and commercial success. Following the second movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was initially announced to release on March 29, 2024.

However, the Sony Marvel movie changes have seen Beyond The Spider-Verse 's release date removed , and the pending release changed to an undetermined date due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes. While the strikes did not affect animators, they did affect the actors lending their voices to the characters within the movie. A source in the Spider-Verse animator roster also alleged that the movie would be unable to meet its original March 2024 release simply because the production was not at a stage for this timeline to work, meaning that while a 2024 release is still within the realm of possibility for Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse , delaying the movie into 2025 may be possible and even preferable depending on circumstances.

MCU TV Shows Releasing In 2024

2024's MCU movies are not the only series that have seen some shakeups as a result of release alterations, as the upcoming MCU TV shows releasing in 2024 have also changed as a result of the same circumstances - with Daredevil: Born Again also being removed from a 2024 release date to an indefinite one due to delays in its production.

On top of that, Marvel announced in December 2023 that a new animated series set in Black Panther's Wakanda, titled Eyes of Wakanda , would be joining the 2024 slate. Additionally, Spider-Man: Freshman Year was retitled Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and re-confirmed for 2024. Currently, 6 MCU shows are set to appear in 2024, though specific release dates are currently unknown for almost all of them, and may see alterations even after they are formally announced, much as is the case with the Marvel movie roster:

Marvel Movies That Have Released In 2024

Madame web - february 14, 2024.

The 2024 Marvel slate started out with a much speculated about Sony movie, as the ambitious Madame Web swung into theaters for a February 14, 2024, release after Sony's Marvel movie release changes moved it forward by two days. The film assembled quite an entertaining selection of characters played by some talented actors, with Madame Web' s cast including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced, and Adam Scott. Unfortunately, however, the film saw a decidedly lackluster response, with Madame Web having now reached an even lower box office than the notably maligned Morbius .

Madame Web Key Characters

- Cassandra Webb/Madame Web (Dakota Johnson)

- Julia Carpenter/ Spider-Woman (Sydney Sweeney)

- Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman (Celeste O'Connor)

- Anya Corazón/Araña/Spider-Girl (Isabela Merced)

- Ezekiel Sim (Tahar Rahim)

Nolan wrote and directed the film about theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, known as the "father of the atomic bomb." Cillian Murphy portrays Oppenheimer. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh and Casey Affleck also appear throughout the film.

"I view Oppenheimer as the most important person who ever lived," Nolan said in an interview with CBS earlier this year.  "Oppenheimer's story is one of the biggest stories imaginable. By unleashing atomic power, he gave us the power to destroy ourselves that we never had before, and that changes the human equation."

The Oscar-nominated film was adapted from the 2005 novel American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer . The film was released in theaters the same day as Barbie on July 21, 2023. With so many fans opting for the #Barbenheimer double feature during opening weekend, Oppenheimer debuted in second place behind Barbie and has raked in nearly $1 billion at the box office.

The official screenplay is also available at Amazon .
