The War for the Wizarding World Heats Up in New ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ Trailer
By Jon Blistein
Dumbledore enters the fray as the fate of the wizarding world hangs in the balance in the new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore . The film is set to open on April 15.
The clip opens back at Hogwarts where Dumbledore ( Jude Law ) learns that the nefarious “Dark Wizard” Grindelwald ( Mads Mikkelsen ) is plotting to seize control of the wizarding world while waging war with the muggles (Mikkelson is taking over the role of Grindelwald from Johnny Depp, who left the franchise after domestic violence allegations). To stop Grindelwald, Dumbledore enlists the help of an intrepid team of wizards (and one muggle) led by magizoologist Newt Scamander ( Eddie Redmayne ).

While Dumbledore appears eager to stay on the sidelines at the start, he’s inevitably drawn into battle. The trailer teases a tense fight between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, as well as plenty more magic mayhem and strange creatures.
The cast for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore also includes Ezra Miller , Dan Fogler, Alison Sudan, William Nadylam, Callum Turner, and Jessica Williams. David Yates directed the film while Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling co-wrote the screenplay with Steve Kloves.
Rowling’s major involvement in the new Fantastic Beasts film, as well as the two that came before it, stands in sharp contrast to her prominent absence from the recent 20th-anniversary special for the original Harry Potter film franchise. While Rowling appeared via some archival footage, she did not participate in the reunion following her recent transphobic comments online.

Newt Scamander is known throughout the wizarding world as its first, and still only, Magizoologist and author of the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Previously content to keep largely to himself, care for his beasts and not take sides, he has seen firsthand the consequences of Gellert Grindelwald’s rise to power and knows he can no longer be a passive bystander. Entrusted by Albus Dumbledore to lead a small but brave band of wizards and his Muggle friend, Jacob, Newt demonstrates great courage and ingenuity as he puts Dumbledore’s plan to stop Grindelwald into motion. But even Newt cannot know everything.
Hogwarts Professor Albus Dumbledore was once close with Gellert Grindelwald and knows better than anyone the Dark wizard’s plot to plunge the wizarding world into war against the non-magical world. Despite his own formidable powers, Dumbledore is unable to strike at Grindelwald himself because of the blood oath sworn between them. So, while he has devised the moves, he must leave it to Newt Scamander and his team to engage in this magical match of wills where the stakes could not be higher. To lose could mean the destruction of both the wizarding and non-magical worlds, so the question remains: how long will it be possible for Dumbledore to stay out of the fray?
Gellert Grindelwald , no longer a fugitive operating in the shadows, is systematically destroying all obstacles standing in his way to seize total control of the wizarding world. Ruthless but charismatic, Grindelwald has raised a growing legion of loyal followers who believe in his message: that wizards have natural superiority to Muggles. He thinks no one is powerful enough to stop him—not even Albus Dumbledore, who cannot move against him for reasons they alone share.
Queenie Goldstein was a free-spirited witch who fell in love with an American Muggle baker, Jacob Kowalski, in spite of the American wizarding world rules against their romance. Driven by desperation not to lose the man she loves, she chose to follow Grindelwald, misunderstanding his promise of a different and better world for all wizards and witches. Grindelwald now exploits her power as a Legilimens with the ability to read minds. But the more Queenie sees, is she really telling Grindelwald everything she knows?
Jacob Kowalski is an American Muggle who is madly in love with Queenie Goldstein. When she broke his heart by choosing to follow Grindelwald, his whole world fell apart; he no longer takes joy even in his beloved bakery in New York City. When he is first approached about venturing back into the wizarding world, his immediate reaction is to want no part of it. But despite his objections, Jacob can’t turn down any chance to find and be reunited with Queenie. Teaming up again with his best friend, Newt Scamander, this Muggle—who always wanted to be a wizard—is presented with a special gift from Dumbledore that makes him feel truly a part of the group.
The young man, once called Credence , is now an acolyte of Gellert Grindelwald, who gave him back his true name—Aurelius Dumbledore—and a wand to direct his powers as a wizard. Grindelwald has kept Credence close, grooming him for a special mission, but the magical force known as an Obscurus still churns within Credence, threatening not only his life but the lives of those around him.
Eulalie Hicks , known as Lally, is the Charms professor at Ilvermorny, the North American School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and a friend of Albus Dumbledore. A brilliant witch, Lally is also brave, resourceful and has no trouble speaking her mind. She is a great admirer of Newt Scamander’s work and has corresponded with him since the publication of his book, though this is the first time they’ve met. She also finds Jacob delightful and enjoys their alliance as they team with Newt, Theseus and the others on their mission from Dumbledore.
Theseus Scamander , the older brother of Newt Scamander, is the Head of the Auror Office at the British Ministry of Magic. Renowned as a war hero, Theseus had always worried about his younger sibling, who was often getting in trouble with the Ministry, putting Theseus in an awkward position. But now he sees that the tables have turned and Newt has become a leader, fighting for more than just his beasts, and Theseus could not be prouder to follow him.
Bunty Broadacre is Newt Scamander’s loyal assistant, who typically spends most of her day tending to the needs of Newt’s large menagerie, including trying to wrangle mischievous young Nifflers. Bunty has long carried a torch for her boss, who is oblivious, but who values her greatly. Stepping out of her assistant role, Bunty is given an important part to play in Dumbledore’s scheme—one that even Newt isn’t privy to.
Aberforth is the rather surly younger brother of Albus Dumbledore, for whom he clearly harbors some resentment, largely connected to the fate of their beloved sister, Ariana. Aberforth is the owner of the Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade, and, despite his strained relationship with Albus, he allows it to serve as a clandestine meeting spot for his brother’s compatriots.
Yusuf Kama is an elegant French-African wizard, who first met Newt Scamander in Paris, when Kama was searching for Credence. The half-brother of Leta Lestrange, Kama blames Grindelwald for her fiery death, so he has personal reasons for wanting to take him down.

There’s a Battle Ahead in the New Trailer for ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’
Jude Law’s Dumbledore is going head-to-head with Mads Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald – with Newt and the gang in between.

Like its protagonists, the third outing for the ‘ Fantastic Beasts ’ franchise has a bit of a battle on its hands. With diminishing box office returns from the second entry, ‘ The Crimes of Grindelwald ’, and a more specific feeling that this latest trip to the Wizarding World has yet to quite capture the magic of the ‘ Harry Potter ’ movies, the pressure is on to deliver.
That’s something that the new trailer for the latest movie, ‘ The Secrets of Dumbledore ’ is looking to ease, promising an epic clash between good and evil – albeit with shades of gray in between. As the title suggests, the focus here has shifted towards Jude Law ’s Albus Dumbledore, who has been unwilling to join the fight in a real way so far.
He knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald ( Mads Mikkelsen ) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander ( Eddie Redmayne ) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?
Yet while it could be easy to assume this is the franchise pivoting completely away from Newt and the rest, the latest look at the movie puts to rest that idea – the Magizoologist is certainly part of the fight here, even if he’s not in the promo as much as, say, Dan Fogelman ’s Jacob Kowalski, the aforementioned muggle baker. Just when he thought he was out, the Wizarding World is drawing him back in, and this time he has a wand to use. Which of course could lead to trouble.
Making the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movies feel more like the Potter saga is probably a wise move at this point, and ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is aiming to blend the high stakes battle that fans have been craving with the usual assortments of magical creatures that is Newt’s more normal focus.
David Yates is once more directing, but the real news behind the scenes here is the presence of Potter veteran Steve Kloves, who wrote all of the seven original films. While J.K. Rowling crafted the screenplay for the first two ‘Beasts’, they weren’t exactly praised for their sparkling dialogue or pacey feel, while the plotting was judged to be convoluted.
Mikkelsen, brought in to replace Johnny Depp , knows how to play layered villains, and the idea of him going head-to-head with Law, especially given what we know about their characters, is certainly something to anticipate.
The cast also includes the returning likes of Ezra Miller , Alison Sudol , William Nadylam , Callum Turner , Jessica Williams , and Katherine Waterston , who remains mysteriously absent in the trailers so far, causing some fans to wonder if she’s left the franchise.
‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ will look to cast its spell over theaters from April 18.

Final Trailer For Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore Seeks To Charm Fans Into Theaters
Warner Bros. released its final trailer for "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" on Monday, showcasing some new footage and hints about the movie's plotline in an attempt to entice fans to catch the third installment of the "Harry Potter" spin-off when it hits U.S. movie theaters on April 15 . The film — which appears to reposition and simplify the principal cast's main goal of apprehending Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) — brings Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), and Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner) back together to try to stop Grindelwald and Credence (Ezra Miller) before they plunge the wizarding world into a war that could break out into the Muggle world as well.
The new "Fantastic Beasts" movie follows 2018's "Crimes of Grindelwald," which did not fare well critically – Rotten Tomatoe s data shows that only 36% of critics and 54% of audiences enjoyed the movie. The second film in what Warner Bros. is still calling a five-part series also proved the least profitable Wizarding World film ever in the United States, grossing only $160 million domestically on a budget of $200 million (via Box Office Mojo ).
Warner Bros. brought screenwriter Steve Kloves back to co-write the new film with "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling, whose screenplays for the series' first two films were her first-ever attempts at writing for the screen (via Wizarding World Digital ). Here is some of the new information that the final trailer for "Secrets of Dumbledore" brings fans.
Dumbledore and Grindelwald meet face-to-face in the final trailer for "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore"
The final trailer for "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" showcases Albus Dumbledore putting his team of wizards trying to defeat Grindelwald together at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the trailer, Dumbledore sets the group's eyes on the Kingdom of Bhutan, which Dumbledore says is home to some of the world's most important magic.
Previously unreleased footage in the new and final trailer also appears to show Newt losing some sort of duel in a forest before being saved by one of the series' titular fantastic beasts, as well as a scene that may take place on the Hogwarts Express in which Newt details Dumbledore's plan to their allies and more political rallies as the wizarding world plunges into a conflict alongside the Muggle world's lurch into World War II. It appears Dumbledore will finally have a direct confrontation with Grindelwald in the movie too — one of the trailer's final shots meets the world's most powerful wizards face-to-face, wands raised, seemingly prepared to strike.
Although Warner Bros. and "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling have promised two more "Fantastic Beasts" films, trailers for the latest installment in the franchise give the story some notion of finality. Dumbledore and Grindelwald's final duel does not take place until 1945, and the new film reportedly takes place in the 1930s, so don't expect Grindelwald's eventual apprehension in this movie (via Collider ). However, fans can likely expect answers to who Credence really is following Grindelwald's identification of him as Aurelius Dumbledore at the end of the last movie.

It would take some kind of magic to spot J.K. Rowling ‘s name in the first trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore .
The Harry Potter author is the film’s producer and co-screenwriter (not to mention the creator of the Wizarding World franchise), yet the only reference to Rowling is an extraordinarily tiny publishing rights mention at the very bottom of the video’s final title card.
It’s a big switch from how studio Warner Bros. showcased Rowling in prior trailers for the franchise.
For instance, here’s Rowling name midway through the trailer for 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them .
In 2018’s The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer, Rowling was featured fairly prominently in the trailer…
Jenna coleman, complex characters and no easy answers: how 'the jetty' explores "primal" issues, spirit awards disrupted by small but loud israel-hamas war protest outside tent.
Now here’s her shout-out in The Secrets of Dumbledore trailer, which just might be the smallest onscreen trailer credit in cinema history:
Instead, the trailer beckons, “Warner Bros. invites you.”
To be fair, the film’s other producers and director David Yates aren’t mentioned either, but it would be difficult to put up a card of top credits for the others without including Rowling in it, too.
Rowling hasn’t tweeted The Secrets of Dumbledore trailer since it was released Monday, but still might; it’s early days, after all (she typically does tweet the franchise’s trailers). The author’s official website likewise didn’t initially mention the trailer, but it was added to the site late Tuesday. The Hollywood Reporter asked Warners whether the author was going to promote the new film and if she was going to be featured in its future marketing materials, but the studio and Rowling had no comment.
Also, HBO Max recently announced a Harry Potter reunion special, which includes the core cast, but it will notably not feature new footage of Rowling (though archival footage will be used).
With Secrets just four months away, typically by now there’s also an announcement for a book based on the author’s Fantastic Beasts screenplay. While there hasn’t been an announcement yet, the author’s publisher assures that one is indeed coming.
Since June 2020, Rowling has taken highly controversial public stances on gender issues that she says are feminist and others say are transphobic. Rowling has extensively detailed her position in a post on her site , while her critics’ rebuttal has been articulated in pieces like this . The author’s comments have prompted many actors in the Wizarding World franchise to speak out against her position, including Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, and Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne. The author has denied being transphobic and said she’s the target of abusive online attacks.
Rowling waded into the issue again on Sunday when she responded to a story about the Scottish police announcing they will start recording rapes based on the attacker’s avowed gender identity. Rowling tweeted , riffing on George Orwell’s 1984 : “War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. The Penis-ed Individual Who Raped You Is a Woman.”
The latest follows the Fantastic Beasts franchise getting out from under its other major behind-the-scenes controversy — the casting of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in the first two films. The studio was under fire due to Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard’s claims of domestic abuse stemming from their 2015 whirlwind marriage. Warner Bros. decided to replace the actor with Mads Mikkelsen for the new film after Depp lost his U.K. libel case in 2020 against a newspaper that branded him a “wife beater.”
The stakes are high for Warner Bros.: The Fantastic Beasts franchise opened strong, with the first film earning a global box office of $814 million, then the franchise dipped with the second film to $654 million. Warners has said there will be five films in total.
In Secrets , Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) seeks to stop the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mikkelsen) as he moves to seize control of the wizarding world. He entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team on a dangerous mission. The film opens in April.
UPDATE : Stories pointing out that Rowling was left off the trailer resulted in some reports speculating that the author was being “canceled” by the studio, prompting WarnerMedia to issue this joint statement Saturday with Rowling’s publicity team: “For 20 years, Warner Bros., J.K. Rowling and her team have worked together to delight fans around the world with spectacular storytelling and the magic of the Wizarding World. That relationship continues today and is more collaborative than ever. News reports to the contrary are completely untrue, and we are disappointed that these inaccurate stories only serve to hurt the Harry Potter fans we hope to entertain.”

Fantastic beasts 4: will it happen franchise future & everything we know.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore certainly sets up a sequel - but will there be a Fantastic Beasts 4? Here's everything we know so far.
The latest fantastic beasts 4 news, fantastic beasts 4 hasn't been confirmed, fantastic beasts 4 cast, fantastic beasts 4 story, what hbo's harry potter reboot means for fantastic beasts.
- Fantastic Beasts 4: Further News & Info
- Fantastic Beasts 4 's future is uncertain due to various factors, such as the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling and WarnerMedia's expansion of the Wizarding World with a Harry Potter reboot TV series.
- Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the development of Fantastic Beasts 4 , and director David Yates has stated that the franchise has been "parked," suggesting it may not move forward.
Fantastic Beasts 4 is the anticipated sequel to 2022's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore , though Newt Scamander's return for another feature-length Wizarding World movie is far from certain. The Fantastic Beasts franchise, a prequel series set decades before the Harry Potter films, has not had the smoothest journey. Between the release of the second and third films, the role of Grindelwald was recast — with Mads Mikkelsen replacing Johnny Depp — and J.K. Rowling at the center of controversy. The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third installment, following Albus Dumbledore, Newt Scamander, and their allies as they aim to stop Gellert Grindelwald taking over the Wizarding World.
The future of Fantastic Beasts could depend on a lot of factors, especially now that HBO is officially expanding the Wizarding World franchise with a Harry Potter reboot television series.
The third film certainly leaves room for more of Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s story to be told in Fantastic Beasts 4 . Before the release of The Secrets of Dumbledore , it seemed rather clear there would be a fourth installment of the franchise. However, the future of Fantastic Beasts could depend on a lot of factors, especially now that HBO is officially expanding the Wizarding World franchise with a Harry Potter reboot television series . With WarnerMedia merging with Discovery too it seems likely that the Fantastic Beasts franchise may forever be a trilogy with no Fantastic Beasts 4 release date in sight.
Forget Fantastic Beasts 4 - Newt Scamander Can Return In Harry Potter's Reboot Thanks To 20-Year-Old Easter Egg
Warner bros. has parked fantastic beasts 4.
The most recent Fantastic Beasts 4 news came on October 26, 2023, and could be the final nail in the coffin for the struggling Harry Potter prequel franchise. As reported by Deadline , filmmaker David Yates has confirmed that the Fantastic Beasts franchise has been parked and development isn't continuing. While WB. themselves have yet to give an official statement confirming Fantastic Beasts filmmaker Yates's comments, the studio hasn't denied them either, and his remarks align with previous responses from the cast and crew of the prequel franchise about the status of Fantastic Beasts 4.
"With Beasts, it’s all just parked. We made those three movies, the last one through a pandemic, and it was enormous fun, but it was tough," Yates explained in an interview while promoting his Netflix movie Pain Hustlers, "We’re all so proud of [Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore]. When it went out into the world, we just needed to sort of stop and pause, and take it easy.” While it was teased when the first movie arrived that Fantastic Beasts would be a 5-movie franchise, it seems that events in the years since have ensured it will end as a trilogy with no Fantastic Beasts 4 in sight.
Development On The Next Fantastic Beasts Movie Hasn't Moved Forward
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was initially envisioned to be the third in a five-part pentalogy of Fantastic Beasts movies. However, there's still no word on whether Fantastic Beasts 4 has been confirmed as of late 2023. Comments like those from star Eddie Redmayne and the new Harry Potter TV series aren't exactly promising. Redmayne revealed in a December 2022 interview (via IndieWire ) that he's heard neither hide nor hair about plans for Fantastic Beasts 4 . With the Harry Potter reboot television show now at the forefront of the goings-on in the Wizarding World franchise, it looks like WB will focus all its efforts there rather than a Fantastic Beasts movie.
Which Characters Can Return For Fantastic Beasts 4?
Since Fantastic Beasts 4 hasn't been confirmed yet, there is no cast to report. That being said, on the slim chance that the movie is still happening, it's best to look back at previous installments to see who would carry over. Rowling doesn't look like she's giving Ezra Miller (The Flash) the boot just yet, and he'd likely return as a dying Credence. Presumably, Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange) would stay in the role of Grindelwald, as Johnny Depp most certainly won't return, and Jude Law (A.I.) would remain as Dumbledore.
Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) hasn't heard anything about Fantastic Beasts 4 going by his previous comments, but he'd definitely come back as Newt if the opportunity arises, and the same goes for Dan Fogler's (Balls of Fury) Jacob Kowalski. As for Queenie, Tina, and the rest of the gang, their lack of presence in Secrets of Dumbledore makes their futures less certain (particularly Tina).
How Secrets of Dumbledore Sets Up Fantastic Beasts 4
The plot of Fantastic Beasts 4 was teased by the ending of the third movie. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ends with Aurelius being taken by Aberforth Dumbledore, who is revealed as Aurelius’ father. After losing the elections to lead the International Confederation of Wizards (ICW), Grindelwald and Dumbledore are now able to duel each other after the latter aims to defend Aurelius’ life from the former’s wrath. The breaking of the blood pact is crucial to how the franchise moves forward.
Dumbledore is no longer hindered by it and can finally engage with his ex-lover in a way he couldn’t for years. More importantly, the ending of The Secrets of Dumbledore reveals Grindelwald’s bad intentions to the entirety of the Wizarding World, who was watching the events of the election unfold. That could mean Grindelwald remains in hiding for most of Fantastic Beasts 4 , building his army behind the scenes before returning to the public eye.
The Wizarding World Reboot Isn't Good For Newt Scamander
The latest creative direction from WB. for the Wizarding World franchise is a Harry Potter reboot television series, which is officially making its way to HBO Max — and the news doesn't bode well for Fantastic Beasts 4 . After Fantastic Beasts 3 's poor foray at the box office, the fate of the Wizarding World hung uncertainly in the balance. Warner Bros. doubled down on its commitment to the Wizarding World franchise, despite its recent failures, as other products outside of Fantastic Beasts , such as the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play and the Hogwarts Legacy video game, performed exceptionally well.
While Warner Bros. hasn't officially canceled the film, director David Yates has stated that the franchise is "on hold," suggesting that the film may not be produced.
While the announcement of a Harry Potter reboot television show being officially in the works at HBO Max is exciting news for HP fans, it seems like the final nail in the coffin for Fantastic Beasts 4 . With star Eddie Redmayne's admission that he's heard no news of the sequel, David Yates' full schedule, and now the announcement of a new Harry Potter project officially in development, Fantastic Beasts 4 seems to have been pushed to the wayside in pursuit of bigger and better things. Either way, Warner Bros. new focus could also end the possibility of a Fantastic Beasts 4.

Harry Potter series aiming for 2026 premiere on Max after J.K. Rowling meeting
In an earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery executives said they are aiming for a 2026 premiere, with "The Hedge Knight" due in 2025.
Christian Holub is a writer covering comics and other geeky pop culture. He's still mad about 'Firefly' getting canceled.
There is indeed more Hogwarts on the horizon. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced in an earnings call on Friday morning that the company is moving forward with the Harry Potter series they announced last year , following a recent meeting with author J.K. Rowling to discuss the project.
“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter ," Zaslav said on the call. "The last film was made more than a dozen years ago. I was in London a few weeks ago with [HBO and Max boss] Casey [Bloys] and [WBD TV executive] Channing [Dungrey] and we spent some real time with J.K. and her team. Both sides are thrilled to be reigniting this franchise."
Zaslav went on to confirm the expected launch date for the new Harry Potter : "Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max. We're aiming for a debut in 2026."
Although Zaslav said "new stories," reports last year indicated that the series will be a new adaptation of Rowling's seven Harry Potter books, rather than an original story set in the Wizarding World universe. And though he correctly noted that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was released in 2011, there have since been three Fantastic Beasts prequel movies overseen by Rowling and set in the same world — each of which experienced diminishing returns at the box office.
Rowling, meanwhile, has become a controversial figure because of her remarks about transgender people. This has drawn opposition not just from Harry Potter fans, but from the cast of the original movies (though not all of them ). Rowling did not participate in the 2021 Max reunion special Return to Hogwarts .
Harry Potter isn't the only big fantasy franchise in WBD's arsenal. The Game of Thrones universe rolls on with House of the Dragon season 2 later this year, and Friday's earnings call confirmed that The Hedge Knight spinoff series is moving forward as well. That show, based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, is now looking at a 2025 premiere date.

After 700 Years in the Making, Inkulinati 1.0 is Now Available to Play
- Releasing on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and via Xbox Game Pass
- 700-year-old manuscripts as concept art
- Inkulinati and Pentiment team up with characters available in both games
Hello Xbox community!
Today marks a monumental milestone – our medieval turn-based strategy game, Inkulinati , is leaving the Xbox Game Preview Program and you can now enjoy the full 1.0 release! To mark the occasion, we’ve got a brand-new shiny release trailer, voiced by famous bardcore musician Hildegard von Blingin’. Check it out above!
So. what is Inkulinati , you might ask? Well, it is a turn-based strategy game, where a rabbit’s bottom can be deadlier than a dog’s sword (trust me, this is not a mistake!). It is inspired by real medieval art and is entirely played on the pages of medieval manuscripts. If you’ve ever seen old medieval books with funny drawings on the sides of the pages, or even medieval memes on the internet, these hilarious doodles (called “marginalia”) were used as the basis for, well, everything in our game.
All of our characters, maps (which we call Battlefields), beasts and objects are based on these drawings made by medieval monks and scribes, sometimes called Illuminators. That’s why we say Inkulinati has been over 700 years in the making.
So, while you may come across some ridiculous shenanigans like donkeys playing trumpets with their bottoms, fish wielding knives and devils with faces instead of butts, trust me, it’s not us who came up with it – it’s actually people from the Middle Ages and Inkulinati is a tribute to their work.
In fact, to be as authentic as possible, we even consulted with a real medievalist to make sure we were using these inspirations correctly and staying true to the source material. So, as you sit back and watch your army of manuscript monkeys throw poop at enemy beasts, you can relax in the knowledge that you’re actually learning history (feel free to flex that fact in front of your history teacher!).
As I mentioned earlier, we’ve been part of the Xbox Game Preview program for just over a year now. And in that year, we’ve made a lot of changes. We added a lot of content, worked tirelessly on balancing and tweaking, squashed those pesky bugs – we’ve listened a lot to you – our community – to make Inkulinati the best it can be. And at this point, I must give a huge shout out to the wonderful Xbox community who have helped us improve along the way.
Thanks to you, we’ve added a lot of new features and ironed out the kinks you thought needed ironing out. For example, our tutorial (called the Academy) is now very different from what it was a year ago – it consists of learning the game through numerous puzzles and challenges that require you to understand the mechanics of Inkulinati in order to solve them and progress. We have added some accessibility features and reduced the shaking of the screen during certain actions to give you a better experience. Without you, Inkulinati would not be the game it is today – so thank you!
But hey, let’s talk about one of the coolest things that has ever happened to our studio – it happened during our time in the Game Preview program. We had the chance to work with the fine folks at Obsidian Entertainment and their fantastic game Pentiment !
How did this happen, you might ask? Well, during Gamescom 2022, where Inkulinati and Pentiment were both showcased on the Xbox stand as future Game Pass releases (in fact, we were literally neighbors – our gaming stations were next to each other), and we had the opportunity to discuss a collaboration for the ages – cameo appearances of our characters in both of our games. We both thought it would be a good fit, as historical accuracy and the manuscripts themselves are an important part of both titles.
One conversation led to another, and eventually we welcomed Pentiment’s main protagonist – Andreas – as a playable character in our game! (You can play as Andreas in the Journey – a single-player campaign with rogue-like elements) In return, some of our in-game characters were added to the margins of the Pentiment books! What’s cool is that it was a real collaboration – Obsidian artists recreated our art in the Pentiment style, and our art director drew Andreas himself. It was right thing to do – that way all the characters, originals and their versions from another game, are concise and fit the game they’re now part of.
For us indie game developers making our first game, it was an incredible experience. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would have a character from a game by Obsidian Entertainment – a studio we were fans of before we started our game development journey – in our game, and our characters in theirs.
So, if you decide to play Pentiment (and you should – it’s a real labour of love and one of the most extraordinary gaming experiences out there), you might also come across some Inkulinati characters in Pentiment’s in-game books. If someone had told us that our characters would be in an Obsidian game, we would have thought it ridiculous. So, our story just proves that crazy things do happen!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story and I really, really hope that you will have a blast-of-a-time in our turn-based strategy. Inkulinati 1.0 is now available to play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows and via Game Pass. Thank you so much for reading and good luck out there illuminating the Battlefields!
