2022 Movies: All The Upcoming Movies Releasing This Year

For those that like to keep a thorough calendar, we've listed the release dates of all the movies coming to theaters and streaming in 2022.

2022 has already been a fantastic year for movies with prestige blockbusters from the likes of The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick , auteur-driven gems like Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Northman , and some great slashers in the form of Scream and X . It's hard to believe that we're only halfway through the year, and better yet, the latter half of 2022 brings new films from celebrated filmmakers like Steven Spielberg , James Cameron , Damien Chazelle , and Jordan Peele and more superhero tentpoles like Thor: Love and Thunder , Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , Black Adam , and Shazam! Fury of the Gods . Not to mention some potential awards players with Maria Schrader 's She Said and Chinonye Chukwu 's Till .

To keep tabs on all of it, be sure to bookmark this page, which will be updated as release dates are announced or shift.

Best Movies 2022

It was a long delay for takeoff but Top Gun: Maverick is why we love the blockbuster experience: Exhilirating action with big emotional stakes and an on-your-feet sunset ending. As for the rest of the top 10, writer/director Martin McDonaugh went back to his roots for the stout-dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin , co-starring Colin Farrell (also in The Batman , by the way). In this universe, Everything Everywhere All At Once became the sci-fi/fantasy/action/romance/comedy that could. You couldn’t ask for more diversity in animation, with the high-spirited Turning Red , the dark musical Pinocchio , and the sweet and poignant hybrid Marcel the Shell with Shoes On . And in 2022, love had lots to do with it, from a mother’s grief and crusade ( Till ) to a pregnant teenager facing harrowing choices ( Happening ) and one hot quixotic couple ( Fire of Love ).

The order reflects Tomatometer scores (as of December 31, 2022) after adjustment from our ranking formula, which compensates for variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows.

The summer movie season is nigh upon us! Following two years of release calendars sent spiraling into flux in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 has symbolized something of a realignment back to the rhythm of the expectations of our pre-pandemic world, already boasting a diverse swath of films that easily stand out as some of the year’s best.

That doesn’t appear to be changing as we steadily move into May and beyond, with a robust catalog of new releases to watch in theaters and at home coming this summer. From hotly anticipated tentpole releases like Top Gun: Maverick , Jurassic World: Dominion , Lightyear , and Thor: Love and Thunder to cerebral horror fare like Alex Garland’s Men , Jordan Peele’s Nope , and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future to eccentric left-field films like Bullet Train and Ten Thousand Years of Longing , this season is positively stacked with a generous smorgasbord of exciting movies to choose from.

Here’s our list of the the biggest releases of the summer, as well as some of the most promising upcoming titles currently flying a bit under the radar.

Jessie Buckley looks concerned in Men.

Alex Garland’s Men is shaping up to be the director’s most mysterious film yet. Stepping aside from the explicit sci-fi premises of Ex Machina and Annihilation , Garland’s latest follows the story of Harper (Jessie Buckley), a woman who moves into an estate on the English countryside to distance herself from the recent loss of her husband. Something’s up with this town though, as Harper begins to feel more and more threatened by the leering smiles and inscrutable motivations of the men in the nearby town. It certainly doesn’t help that all the men appear to be played by Rory Kinnear and, at one point, look like they’re out to kill her. The question isn’t whether this is all in her head, but rather, what could it possibly be if it’s not? —Toussaint Egan

Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers

(L-R) Dale (voiced by Andy Samberg) and Chip (voiced by John Mulaney) in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

The most recent trailer for Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers didn’t just show off the mischievous chipmunks and their peers. Nor did it just jam-pack Disney characters from across the company’s history. No, it pulled in cartoon characters from across animation history, in a mega crossover that’s giving Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam a run for their money. Chip and Dale are estranged after the cancellation of their popular show. Chip works in insurance, while Dale tries to relive the glory days — going so far as to get the “CG surgery.” They’re called back into action after several animated characters go missing. John Mulaney and Andy Samberg star as Chip and Dale respectively, with The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer directing. — Petrana Radulovic

Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise as Maverick in the cockpit of a fighter jet in Top Gun: Maverick

Nearly four decades after the original Top Gun hit theaters, Tom Cruise is back at it again. And this time, he’s a certified pilot.

Cruise returns as Maverick, who has been chosen by his former rival Iceman (Val Kilmer, also returning to the franchise) to lead a group of new Top Gun graduates on a mission. That group includes Rooster, the son of Maverick’s best pal from Top Gun , Goose.

A movie star who has never been afraid of high-elevation stunts in his illustrious movie career, our few looks at Top Gun: Maverick show us Cruise is once again prioritizing practical effects over CG. The movie promises to bring audiences right into the cockpits of fighter jets with the real actors, who went through an intense training regimen in order to travel in the jets safely. If you haven’t watch the training video, it’s fascinating and sold me on the whole project (enjoy the glee with which Cruise talks about the aviation training he designed for his co-stars). — Pete Volk

The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Tina, Linda, Louise, Gene, and Bob Belcher talk to Sergeant Bosco behind a police barrier in The Bob’s Burgers Movie.

The Belcher family is headed to the big screen for the first time, after 12 seasons of the show and two years of pandemic-related release delays.

Bob, Linda, Louise, Tina, and Gene have to save their restaurant for the umpteenth time when a sinkhole opens in front of it, moving their business to a food cart. You can expect the debut of “Summer Tina,” silly songs, and puns. Oh, so many puns.

In the words of show creator Loren Bouchard, let’s hope it continues to make “ small stories feel big .” — PV

Fire Island

(From left to right): Bowen Yang, Tomas Matos, Joel Kim Booster, Matt Rogers, Margaret Cho, and Torian Miller around a table in Fire Island.

Directed by Andrew Ahn ( Driveways) and written by and starring comedian Joel Kim Booster, Fire Island is a Pride and Prejudice -inspired rom-com set at the iconic gay resort destination of Fire Island. Booster, Bowen Yang ( Saturday Night Live ), and comedian Margaret Cho star in what looks like a raunchy, hilarious time about found family, class and race within the gay community, and, of course, romance. — PV

Crimes of the Future

Celebrity performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) flanked by his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) and investigator Timlin (Kristen Stewart) in Crimes of the Future (2022).

Body-horror maestro David Cronenberg is set to return to the subgenre he helped define with his upcoming 2022 film Crimes of the Future . Frequent collaborator Viggo Mortensen stars as Saul Tenser, a performance artist in a near-future society who rises to prominence by undergoing elaborate acts of self-mutilation for the entertainment of onlookers worldwide. Unbeknownst to him, Saul’s actions have attracted the attention of a mysterious group who views his career as a means to steer the course of human evolution. Joining Mortensen are Léa Seydoux as Saul’s partner, Caprice, and Kristen Stewart as Timlin, an investigator from the National Organ Registry.

The footage seen from the teaser trailer looks appropriately gnarly, with glimpses of Saul seated in a strange Gigerian apparatus, a man with ears protruding from his forehead having his eyes and mouth sewn shut, and Stewart’s Timlin holding an eyepiece while probing a camera inside the abdomen of an unseen person. Oh yeah, and a boy eating a pink ceramic waste basket. Cronenberg is back , baby! —TE

Jurassic World: Dominion

A t-rex roars in front of a movie screen in Jurassic World: Dominion prologue

“Excited” might not be the right word for Jurassic World: Dominion . “Morbidly curious” is probably a better fit. The first movie in the Jurassic Park sequel trilogy was almost absurd enough to come off as a parody of the last decade’s deluge of reboots and revivals of long-dormant series — after all, the dinosaurs are a perfect metaphor. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom proved that nothing that clever was going on here. The sequel did, however, open up the possibility of this series ascending to a new level of absurdity by trying to pass off dinosaurs as some kind of lethal new military tech. This premise is absurd enough on its own, but the fact that the third movie seems poised to suggest the idea of dinosaurs taking over the world — despite the existence of things like guns, missiles, drones, tanks, and human’s opposable thumbs — means that the movie has a chance to be a tremendous amount of fun, even if it isn’t likely to be particularly good. — Austen Goslin

Juancho Hernangómez as Bo Cruz and Adam Sandler as Stanley Sugerman in Hustle.

Adam Sandler famously loves basketball. Yes, he starred in the excellent Uncut Gems (one of our best thrillers you can watch at home ), but he’s also a huge Knicks fan and pickup basketball legend who will somewhat randomly show up for games at courts around the country. In Hustle , produced by Sandler and LeBron James, he plays Stanley Sugarman, a struggling basketball scout who discovers a promising basketball prospect overseas (played by current NBA player Juancho Hernangómez). With a large supporting cast that includes Queen Latifah, Ben Foster, Robert Duvall, and NBA stars Anthony Edwards and Trae Young, Hustle is the rare promising sports vehicle led by a star with a love for the game. — PV

buzz lightyear flying a ship, with an orange cat robot on his shoulder

Pixar takes a sharp turn into hard sci-fi with Lightyear . It’s shaping up to be less of a “fifth movie in the Toy Story franchise” and more like a gritty, epic adventure of its own. And for those of you wondering: No, it’s not the “real” human Buzz Lightyear , but the main character of an in-universe movie called Lightyear that Andy likely watched growing up. Chris Evans stars as the reimagined Buzz, a determined pilot bent on finishing his mission no matter the cost. And when that cost turns into displacing him years out of time, he must work together with a group of rookies in order to stop a robot-alien invasion. It’s an adult science fiction film that also happens to be accessible to children — a first for Pixar. — PR

Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrman’s Elvis (2022)

If there’s one director who could bring new life to the well-worn musician biopic formula, it’s ostentatious blockbuster king Baz Luhrmann. It doesn’t hurt to have such a fascinating figure to focus on, either.

Elvis stars Austin Butler (Tex Watson in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the future Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two ) as the King and Tom Hanks as his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. With Luhrmann’s typical flair and some bold line delivery choices by Hanks in the trailer, Elvis looks like a musical biopic by way of superhero cinema . — PV

The Black Phone

Ethan Hawke wearing a horned devil mask in The Black Phone (2022).

Scott Derrickson ( Doctor Strange , Sinister ) returns to horror in this Ethan Hawke-led supernatural serial killer thriller based on the 2007 Joe Hill book. That’s honestly enough for us to be interested, but if you need a little plot to help you out: Hawke plays a serial killer who abducts a young boy. When the child sees a disconnected phone in the room he’s being held in, he discovers he can communicate with the killer’s past victims. Meanwhile, a fellow classmate is having dreams about the kidnapping and attempts to help the search for the boy. —PV

The Princess

Joey King holds a sword in The Princess.

This “Rapunzel meets The Raid ” action movie is directed by Le-Van Kiet, who made the excellent Vietnamese martial arts movie Furie . The Princess stars Joey King as a princess imprisoned in a tower after refusing to marry a tyrant. The opportunity to watch a R-rated action movie about a princess kicking ass is too good to pass up, especially from a director who has the goods. — PV

Available on Hulu on July 1

Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder holding his ax

After the success of Thor: Ragnarok , Taika Waititi returns to direct the next iteration of the Thor series and to co-star as the voice of Korg. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie also return, naturally, and the additions of Russell Crowe as Zeus and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher are intriguing. The Guardians of the Galaxy are also present, it appears.

But one element of Thor: Love and Thunder takes the cake, in terms of excitement level: Buff Lady Thor Jane Foster. Natalie Portman returns to the franchise with a new look and new powers , and we can’t wait to see her mess some folks up with Mjolnir. — PV

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris

Lesley Manville looks at a dress in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

Based on the 1958 novel, this comedy looks like a charming story about a domestic worker who becomes enchanted with a beautiful Dior dress. When she receives a delayed pension for her husband’s death in the war, she travels to Paris to buy one herself. Lesley Manville stars as Mrs. Harris, with supporting roles played by Isabelle Huppert and Jason Isaacs in this story that meets a fish-out-of-water comedy with class commentary and gorgeous dresses. — PV

In theaters on July 15

Keke Palmer screams in Jordan Peele’s Nope.

Competing with Alex Garland’s Men for this summer’s most succinctly titled movie, Jordan Peele’s Nope stars Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya as Jill and James Haywood, proprietors of the Black-owned horse-training ranch in a small California town who bear witness to a “miraculous” and terrifying event of immense proportions. Is it aliens, ghosts, or a mass hallucination brought on by the collective traumas of the 21st century? We don’t know! So far. what we do know is that Steven Yeun, Keith David, and Euphoria ’s Barbie Ferreira have supporting roles and that the film will likely turn out to be a social thriller in the vein of Get Out and Us . We’ll have to wait until July to find out for ourselves. —TE

Bullet Train

Brad Pitt in Bullet Train

We’re in a post-John Wick moment of action movies, and Bullet Train is the latest exciting example. Brad Pitt stars in the latest from his former stunt man David Leitch, co-director of the first Wick movie and sole director of Atomic Blonde , Deadpool 2 , and Hobbs & Shaw. This high-octane thriller of five assassins on the same bullet train co-stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Zazie Beetz, Michael Shannon, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, rapper Bad Bunny, and many other guest stars. The trailer promises a hard-hitting time in contained spaces, an action movie setting I will personally never tire of. —PV

In theaters on July 29

DC League of Super-Pets

Merton the turtle, PB the pig, Krypto the dog, Chip the squirrel and Ace the bat-hound in DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS.

After big changes to Warner Bros.’ schedule for DC movies , the animated adventure DC League of Super-Pets is now the big summer release for the studio. With some very god dogs (voiced by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart), a turtle with super speed, and a villain who looks like the Brainiac of guinea pigs , this movie will follow the Justice League’s pets as they hope to rescue their superhero companions from said guinea pig. Also, Keanu Reeves voices Batman. — PV

Rebecca Hall in Resurrection

The first movie in a decade by writer-director Andrew Semans ( Nancy, Please ) stars Rebecca Hall ( The Night House ) in a horror thriller that sounds somewhat reminiscent of the 1981 masterwork Possession . Hall plays a woman who seems to have her life together — a single mom with a daughter going off to college and a successful career. But when a monster from her past (Tim Roth) reappears, things get ... spooky. Hall starring in this kind of project is always worth paying attention to — she’s one of our great modern screen actors, and it seems like the kind of project ripe for an unforgettable performance. — PV

Close-up shot of Jamie Foxx holding a shotgun with a dismembered vampire hand on his right shoulder in Day Shift (2022).

Legendary stunt coordinator and second unit director J.J. Perry finally gets his directorial debut with this Netflix original about a pool cleaner (Jamie Foxx) who is a dad and also secretly a vampire hunter. Co-starring Dave Franco, Snoop Dogg, and action legend Scott Adkins, Day Shift has a screenplay by Shay Hatten ( John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum , Army of the Dead ). —PV

Three Thousand Years of Longing

Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba with pointy ears sit next to each other in George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing.

Details are light on George Miller’s long-awaited follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road , but that’s OK — the fact that he’s making another movie, and that Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton are in it, is plenty enough for us. We do know the movie is about a scholar who meets a djinn in Istanbul, which offers her three wishes. — PV

The line where the sky meets the sea is calling Moana once again. Disney announced a sequel to “Moana,” which will be released theatrically on Nov. 27.

The company’s CEO Bob Iger revealed the news on CNBC ahead of Disney’s first quarter of fiscal 2024 earnings report. The second “Moana” was originally developed as a TV series but became a feature film because Iger was impressed with the footage.

“’Moana’ remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Iger said in a statement. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theaters this November.”

Dave Derrick Jr. is directing the sequel, with music from the duo of Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome,” isn’t expected to return with new songs for the follow-up.

“Moana” became a success for Disney, generating more than $680 million at the box office. The animated musical found renewed life on Disney+ with 1 billion hours streamed last year.

Iger’s decision to put “Moana 2” in theaters follows Disney’s rough 2023 at the box office. Disney Animation’s “Wish” joined a long line of misfires, including “The Marvels,” “Haunted Mansion” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Pixar’s “Elemental” struggled to start but ultimately rebounded with $496 million globally.

“Moana 2” is separate from the studio’s live-action remake, which is currently in the works with Dwayne Johnson back as the tattooed demigod Maui. Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 film, is expected to reprise her role in the animated sequel. But she will not return as the titular character in the live-action version, though she will serve as an executive producer.

‘Twisters’ Updates: The Trailer, the Cast, & Everything Else We Know

Are you ready to be blown away by the upcoming 'Twister' sequel? The first trailer for the Glen Powell film was revealed during the Super Bowl. Here's the latest updates on the movie.

Daisy Edgar Jones Glen Powell

Twister   was unlike anything movie theatergoers had seen before when it came out in 1996. The epic disaster movie, about a group of amateur storm chasers trying to deploy tornado research in Oklahoma, featured ground-breaking visual effects that wowed audiences. The film was a smash hit, grossing nearly $500 million worldwide, and scored two Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

It took over 25 years until it was finally announced that a long-awaited  sequel film , titled  Twisters , is coming out. Daisy Edgar-Jones, who rose to fame with her breakout role in Normal People , was the first major star attached to the sequel, and Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell is joining the (turbulent) fun. The first trailer for the sequel came out during Super Bowl LVIII on February 11.

If you feel it, chase it. #TwistersMovie is only in theaters July 19. — Twisters (@Twistersmovie) February 12, 2024

Twister  was a movie way ahead of its time, and the sequel is bound to blow audiences away when it arrives in theaters. Here’s everything you need to know about  Twisters , including the release date, the cast, and more.

Twister 2  Confirmed

Initial plans for a  Twister  reboot from Universal Pictures began back in June 2020. At the time,  Variety reported that  Top Gun: Maverick   director Joseph Kosinski was in talks to direct the film. Over two years later, in October 2022,  Deadline   reported that Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg ‘s production company, Amblin Entertainment, were meeting with directors to get a start on the sequel, which was confirmed to be titled  Twisters  at that point. Spielberg, who was a producer on the first film, reportedly read the script for the sequel and helped get the project green-lit.

The  Twister  sequel was confirmed to be happening in December 2022, along with the release date announced. Lee Isaac Chung  was also announced as the director, per  Variety .

Release Date

Twisters  is scheduled to hit movie theaters on July 19, 2024. That’s almost 30 years since the original film came out on May 10, 1996. Filming on the sequel is slated to begin in early 2023 in Los Angeles, according to a report from MovieWeb .

Cast & Crew

Daisy Edgar-Jones

Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in Twisters.  This comes after her acclaimed work in the Hulu limited series Normal People and the film adaptation of Where The Crawdads Sing .

On April 14, 2023, Glen Powell confirmed reports that he would be starring in Twisters . He reposted articles and tweets about his casting on his Instagram and wrote, “I love a good chase.” Glen is coming off an incredible year where he was the breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick . He played the one and only Hangman.

Glen Powell

Glen starred in  Anyone But You , his rom-com with Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney . Glen’s also known for his roles in Hidden Figures , Devotion , Set It Up , and the TV series Scream Queens . Anthony Ramos , Brandon Perea , and Daryl McCormack have also joined the cast.

On May 17, Deadline reported that Maura Tierney , Harry Hadden-Paton , Sasha Lane , Kiernan Shipka , Nik Dodani , David Corenswet , Tunde Adebimpe , and Katy O’Brian will star in Twisters. Character details have not been revealed. Glen reposted Deadline’s announcement and wrote on his Instagram Story, “The Gang’s All Here.”

The original movie starred Helen Hunt , Bill Paxton , Cary Elwes , Jami Gertz, Lois Smith , Alan Ruck , Philip Seymour Hoffman , Jeremy Davies , and Todd Field . Fans are hoping we get some of the original cast back for the sequel. Sadly, two of those actors — Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman — have died. Deadline  previously reported that the  Twisters  team wants Helen Hunt back as Dr. Jo Harding, but her return has yet to be confirmed.

While Twister  was directed by Jan de Bont , the sequel will be helmed by Lee Isaac Chang . Lee is the recipient of two Academy Award nominations for directing and writing the 2020 movie  Minari . The screenplay for  Twisters  was written by The Revenant   co-writer  Mark L. Smith , according to  Variety . Steven Spielberg’s collaborator  Frank Marshall is producing the sequel.

What Will Twisters Be About?

Universal Pictures revealed the official description for the film on February 11. It reads, “Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.”

The 10 Most Anticipated Sexy Movies of 2024

From Challengers to Love Lies Bleeding , discussions about sex onscreen are as fervid (and often as unreasonable) as they were in the early ‘90s.

Now, obviously, things are different. Online, it feels like discussions about sex onscreen are as fervid (and often as unreasonable) as they were in the early ‘90s. Often, it’s kicked off by a social media post declaring sex scenes pointless—or worse, a violation of consent—that multiple outlets have all weighed in, giving rise to discourse about the discourse. And yet Saltburn and Poor Things were two widely discussed films from 2023, due in no small part to their depictions of sex. Saltburn might not have gotten half the play that it did were it not for the kinky bathwater-drinking, grave-humping, and dick-out dancing by Barry Keoghan’s character, Oliver. Poor Things , which in part explores the pragmatic enjoyment of sex via a woman who hasn’t been socialized to be ashamed of her sexuality or body, has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards.

It’s a good time for sex in movies. As someone who thinks about sex a lot (I co-write Slate ’s " How To Do It " advice column) and pays close attention to matters of media representation, I eat all of this up. I am excited for creative approaches to sex on screen, both in terms of the act itself and the greater impact it has on characters’ cultures, dynamics, and personalities. I’m looking forward to the year ahead of sex in movies, and to kick off this year’s column, below is a preview of what to expect.

Drive-Away Dolls (February 23)

Ethan Coen’s first narrative feature he’s directing without his brother, Joel, has been kicking around since the mid-‘00s, when it was called Drive-Away Dykes and had Selma Blair, Holly Hunter, Christina Applegate, and Chloë Sevigny attached. Now, it has a more user-friendly name, but is still very much the lesbian road movie that Coen and co-writer Tricia Cooke (his wife) always intended it to be. In Drive-Away Dolls, Margaret Qualley, wielding an emphasized Southern accent, stars as the extremely sexually comfortable Jamie. She's a foil for her more buttoned-up lesbi-friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), as they take a road trip from Philly to Tallahassee, Florida, while carrying… hot cargo. Criminals are trailing them, to boot. Expect copious copulation in the form of girl-on-girl oral, toy play, and more. If you thought Burn After Reading was horny, you’re in for a wild ride.

Mea Culpa (February 23)

At long last, the world gets to see Tyler Perry’s take on the erotic thriller. The auteur wrote and directed Mea Culpa , which Netflix is marketing as a “steamy thriller,” and its trailer has the hallmarks of golden-era erotic thrillers. Kelly Rowland is a defense attorney (of course) representing an artist ( Moonlight ’s Trevante Rhodes) accused of murdering his girlfriend (naturally), who says things like, "I’m the kind of man that likes to see pleasure on my woman’s face. Not pain.” (Sure, buddy.) Something that is also very vintage erotic thriller? A voiceover comparing human carnality to that of animals: “A snake is never violent when stalking their prey. It’s only when they get right into striking distance that they become very violent,” says one character. Check!

Dune: Part Two (March 1)

OK, so we can’t expect too much along the lines of sex from Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up to his code-cracking 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece . But the second half of the book does contain a sort of spice orgy that’s part of the Water of Life ritual Lady Jessica undergoes. Some fans of the book are concerned: “ Dune Part 2 's Spice Orgy Is A Problem” reads a subheading in a Screen Rant piece about whether or not Villeneuve will remain faithful to the book while incorporating the all-important sex-party imagery.

Love Lies Bleeding (March 8)

Rose Glass’s follow up to 2019’s Saint Maud was a sensation at Sundance this year. It stars Kristen Stewart as a gym manager who falls for a female bodybuilder. Lots of gunfire and Ed Harris with a bald-on-top-long-on-the-sides hairdo follow. T he Telegraph deemed it “jaw-dropping” in its five-star review , while The Hollywood Reporter wrote that among its “passionate and intimate lesbian sex scenes” are depictions of “oral sex, brief toe-sucking and one encounter that finds Lou instructing Jackie to masturbate while she watches from inches away.” Sign us up!

Challengers (April 26)

Talk about making love mean something in tennis. The trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s racket romance depicts what seems to be the beginning of threesome between three characters: Tashi (Zendaya), Patrick (Josh O’Connor), and Art (Mike Faist). They sit in a line on a bed; she kisses Art, then Patrick, and then…? It seems like—but is unclear if—that’s a flashback. (Per MGM’s official summary , she eventually marries Art and he and Patrick face off on the court.) Also unclear: Whether this threesome will be MFM or MMF. Knowing Guadagnino, bet on the latter.

Housekeeping for Beginners (April 5)

The past two movies from Macedonian Australian writer-director Goran Stolevski, 2022’s You Won’t Be Alone and 2023’s Of an Age , have both featured pivotal and bold sex scenes. There’s no reason to believe that the chosen-family, cinéma vérité-esque drama Housekeeping for Beginners won’t do the same—it’s R-rated, in part for sexual content.

The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed (April 26)

Joanna Arnow’s latest film did the festival circuit in 2023 and will open for general audiences later this year. Its protagonist Ann (Arnow) is a woman in a “ long-term casual BDSM relationship ,” the portrayal of which could go a long way in bringing kink without shame or stigma to moviegoing audiences.

Sebastian (TBA)

In the London-set Sebastian , via Finnish-British director Mikko Mäkelä, Ruaridh Mollica plays Max, a writer who turns tricks on the side. He does this mostly without pathos. Around the time of his movie’s Sundance premiere, Mäkelä told Variety that he wanted to “approach the topic of [sex work] becoming more common and continue to interrogate any lingering stigmas around it.” Practically speaking, Max exists in two modes: his writerly one, in which he uses his given name, and his sex-worker one, where he goes by Sebastian. The movie is explicit—Max is casually versatile with his trade—and Sebastian's laid-back approach to its subject is fresh.

Ponyboi (TBA)

Where Sebastian is casual, Ponyboi —another queer sex-worker movie that premiered at Sundance this year—is tense. The titular character (played by River Gallo) spends much of the film on the run in North Jersey, after a trick dies from smoking bad meth. Turns out, it was provided by Ponyboi’s pimp (and occasional sex partner), Vinny (Dylan O’Brien). It’s reminiscent of 2015’s Tangerine , though it looks much better (no iPhone cinematography here) and is deeply invested in Ponyboi’s interior, even if the character is somewhat ambivalent about what’s going on under the hood. “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be anymore,” says Ponyboi, who, like Gallo (the mastermind of the project, according to an interview at Sundance with director Esteban Arango), is intersex. There’s a lot going on in this one, but its frenetic pacing ensures this is no chore to endure.

Last Summer (TBA)

It would be crude and unfair to say that Catherine Breillat’s drama is the French arthouse equivalent of stepmom/MILF porn, but Last Summer touches on the taboos and morality questions inherent in that particular (yet popular) pornographic subgenre. This remake of the 2019 Danish film Queen of Hearts finds Anne (Léa Drucker) drawn to the 17-year-old son her husband had in a previous marriage. Mess ensues. of course, but it’s rather mannered and tasteful mess!

The Rest of 2024

a person wearing a black dress

There are, of course, many other movies set to be released that could have enticing sexual elements of sex in them, but too little is known about them currently. The third part of Ti West’s Mia Goth-starring X trilogy, MaXXXine , is expected this year—the early teaser suggested its porn-starring protagonist may be entering her VHS era, though a report from a screening suggested it is “homage to Dario Argento and the sub-genre of giallo,” and compared it to Lucio Fulci’s roughie The New York Ripper . Robert Eggers is trying his hand at Nosferatu (due out by the end of the year), which is almost certain to contain vampiric lust. And will Todd Phillips continue pushing the envelope in Joker: Folie à Deux by staging sex between Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Lady Gaga’s (rumored) Harley Quinn? Anyone down for some clown-on-clown action?
