Definition and How to Choose a Great Topic for Capstone Project

First, let’s start by explaining what is a capstone project. By definition, it is a culminating and integrative academic experience that students undertake typically in their final year of study. It is designed to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and competencies gained throughout a program of study. Capstone projects vary across disciplines and institutions, but they generally require students to apply what they have learned to address a real-world problem, conduct original research, or create a significant project.

capstone project

Here are key components and steps to consider when choosing a great capstone project topic:

Relevance to Your Field of Study:

Choose a topic that aligns with your major or specialization. The capstone project should showcase your expertise and knowledge in your chosen field.

Personal Interest:

Select a topic that genuinely interests you. Your enthusiasm for the subject will sustain your motivation throughout the project, making the experience more rewarding.

Real-World Application:

Consider topics that have practical implications in the real world. This could involve addressing a problem, proposing a solution, or conducting research that has the potential to make a meaningful impact.

Identify a Gap or Problem:

Look for areas in your field where there might be gaps in knowledge or existing problems that need solutions. Your capstone project can contribute to filling these gaps or solving identified problems.

Assess the feasibility of your project. Consider the resources, time, and access to data or materials that you will need. A feasible project is one that you can realistically complete within the given time frame and with the available resources.

Faculty Expertise:

Check if there are faculty members with expertise in your chosen area of interest. Having a mentor who is knowledgeable about your topic can provide valuable guidance and support.

Interdisciplinary Approach:

Explore the possibility of integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines if it enhances the depth and breadth of your project. Interdisciplinary projects can be particularly innovative and impactful.

Current Trends and Issues:

Stay updated on current trends, issues, and debates in your field. Choosing a topic that is relevant to contemporary discussions can make your project more engaging and meaningful.

Project Scope:

Define the scope of your project clearly. A well-defined and focused project is more likely to be successful than one that is too broad or vague.

Consult with Advisors:

Seek advice from your academic advisors or mentors. They can provide valuable insights, help you refine your ideas, and ensure that your project meets the academic standards of your institution.

Remember, the capstone project is not only a demonstration of your academic abilities but also an opportunity to explore, innovate, and contribute to your field of study. Exploring the Impact of Short-Term Memory in Psychology Capstone Project

One of the best capstone project ideas for psychology students is to delve into short-term memory. Short-term memory plays a crucial role in our daily lives, and understanding its mechanisms can provide valuable insights into human behavior. For your psychology capstone project, you could explore how short-term memory impacts decision-making processes or influences interpersonal communication.

To add depth to your project, consider investigating how short-term memory affects our ability to perform everyday tasks, such as following directions or remembering phone numbers. You could also delve into the role of short-term memory in learning and how it interacts with long-term memory. This exploration could lead to a better understanding of memory-related disorders and potential strategies for improvement.

Investigating the Psychological Impact of Social Anxiety

Social anxiety is a common mental health issue that can severely impact an individual’s quality of life. In addition to these areas, consider exploring how people unconsciously learn to cope with social anxiety and the effectiveness of these coping mechanisms. This could involve interviewing individuals with social anxiety or conducting a survey to gather data. Remember, project writing should be thorough, well-researched, and presented.

Choosing the Right Psychology Capstone Project Topic

Capstone courses in psychology are designed to help students demonstrate their mastery of essential ideas, improve their capacity to conduct independent research and ensure they are completely prepared to join the profession as practitioners upon completion of their academic studies. The research presented in the thesis or dissertation is completely original, advances the state of knowledge, and has practical application.

Suppose a bachelor’s thesis is a qualifying work that attests to the student’s overall professional and systematic preparation. In that case, the thesis requirements for a bachelor’s, a specialist’s, and a master’s degree will vary significantly in terms of their content and level of justification. Its familiarity with specialized literature, ability to extrapolate from recent scientific investigations and mathematical prowess are all relevant considerations. Completing a graduate-level psychology course demonstrates the student’s professional competence and systematic understanding of the discipline.

An accomplished bachelor’s thesis might be used as the cornerstone of a seminar on the psyche of the expert. While this doesn’t prove mastery of any research method, it might validate knowledge in that area. However, a master’s thesis is required to show the employment of rigorous scientific procedures and cutting-edge research equipment because of its status as a qualifying work.

Selecting the right psychology capstone project topic is crucial for your project’s success. The best capstone project ideas align with your interests and career goals. Whether you’re interested in short-term memory, social anxiety, depression, or capstone psychological services, ensure the topic you choose sparks your curiosity and offers ample scope for research.

When choosing your topic, consider how the habits formed during your academic journey can influence your choice. For instance, a short-term or long-term memory project could be a good fit if you’ve developed a keen interest in how the brain forms and retrieves memories.

Consider the controlled process of research and the basic structure of your project. This includes creating a title page, abstract, introduction, method section, results, discussion, and references.

Also, think about the potential negative impacts of your chosen topic. For instance, if you explore how social anxiety impacts academic performance, consider the ethical implications of your research and how you’ll ensure the privacy and well-being of your participants.

The project’s ultimate aim is to engage you in critical thinking and problem-solving, contributing to your field in meaningful ways.

🎯 How to Choose a Perfect Capstone Topic: A Comprehensive Guide

Picking the perfect topic for your capstone project is a journey rather than a simple choice. A well-chosen topic fuels your passion, keeps you motivated, and showcases your academic growth. Here’s a comprehensive step-by-step guide to make the journey smooth and rewarding:

  • Discover Your Academic Passion: What excites you in your field of study? Look back on your academic journey. Reflect on courses that kept you hooked or career objectives that drive you. This passion could ignite the spark for your capstone project.
  • Understand the Importance: Your capstone topic should be significant, with the potential to add to or enhance existing knowledge in your field. It should align with industry trends, meet contemporary needs, and lend fresh insights or a unique viewpoint.
  • Scope it Right: Your capstone project should be an exhibition of your academic prowess, but it shouldn’t be overwhelmingly broad. Conversely, it shouldn’t be so specific that it limits your exploration. Strike a balance between ambition and feasibility.
  • Embark on a Preliminary Expedition: Early stage research is a stepping stone to solidifying your topic. Dig into existing literature and debates. This understanding can aid in sculpting your approach, ensuring your project brings something new to the table.
  • Welcome Perspectives: Share your thoughts with your mentor or colleagues. They can offer valuable feedback, suggest alternate angles, or highlight any potential roadblocks. An outside perspective often brings clarity.
  • Measure the Practicality: Last but certainly not least, check the feasibility of your chosen topic. ake a moment to evaluate the resources, time, and competencies needed to successfully complete your project. Aspiring high is commendable, yet it’s crucial to stay grounded and realistic.

Remember, your capstone topic should be a torchbearer of your intellectual curiosity, paving the way for deep research and substantial contribution to your field. Choose wisely and let your journey to knowledge be an exhilarating one.

2022 Capstones

By Christine Cornwell

This capstone explores and highlights the key ingredients that foster self-efficacy and build the character strength of perseverance, especially in children of primary age. By understanding how these positive psychology concepts relate to each other, this capstone discovers that children can achieve a life of excellence when they believe they can and choose to persevere despite difficulties and failures. Further, this capstone demonstrates why a story is the most compelling way to engage and connect with children. Through the power of story, a positive psychology children's picture book and story-related activities will bring the concepts to life in a fun, fantastical, and fictional way. These applications aim to introduce and familiarize children with valued skills to build a stronger sense of self-efficacy and develop their character strengths that societies and cultures around the world value and consider worthwhile cultivating.

The empirical evidence of the incredible power of touch to both ameliorate the negative and to bolster the positive is undeniable. From Harlow’s monkeys to the Romanian orphans, the lack of touch is shown to impact the quality of life and the ability to live. Research on tactile therapy with premature babies has shown the potent impact of touch on growth, development, and connection. This paper proposes that touch be included in the science of applied positive psychology. Though there are factors such as sexual violence and contagious diseases that caution us from physically engaging with others, we cannot allow these nuanced factors to stop us from investigating a potential arena for well-being, thriving, and living a good life. A call for future empirical research and positive interventions with touch will be presented in this paper.

By Mark O’Brien

Background: Posttraumatic growth (PTG)—positive changes that people may experience in the aftermath of highly distressing experiences—has been observed in survivors of a variety of events but has not been previously studied among people who have caused accidental death or injury (PCADIs). In addition, questions remain about the role, in PTG, of changes in the assumptive world and the relationships between PTG and distress, personality, and social support.

Method: Participants (N = 528), included PCADIs (n = 44) and a non-trauma comparison group (n = 484), who completed the Primals Inventory and measures of personality, anxiety, and depression. PCADIs (n = 43) also completed measures of PTG, PTG behavioral changes, social support, and life satisfaction.

Results: Modest levels of PTG commensurate with survivors of other relevant forms of distress were observed. Results demonstrated significant differences between primal world beliefs Good, Safe, Enticing, Just, Regenerative, Funny, and Improvable in PCADIs and non-trauma survivors as well as significant positive relationships between PTG and the primals Good, Safe, Alive, Just, Regenerative, Funny, and Improvable and between PTG and reported behavior changes related to PTG, but no significant relationships were found between PTG and distress, PTG and social support, or PTG and personality traits Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, or Agreeableness (though a significant negative relationship was observed between PTG and Neuroticism).

Conclusions: PCADIs may experience PTG that both influences and is influenced by primal world beliefs, but the hypothesized relationships between PTG and distress, personality, and social support were not observed. Additional studies with larger PCADI populations may find these relationships exist at a statistically significant level. And future research should aim to develop interventions addressing the distress and growth potential of this population.

The stories we tell can shape our lives and our experiences. Unfortunately, many African American adolescents are often subjected to stereotypes and one-sided deficit narratives that can become self-fulfilling prophecies undermining their achievement, aspirations, and well-being. However, the college admission process offers an intervention opportunity to help these students tell a different story—their story. In this paper, the author presents an analysis of the threats and opportunities inherent in the college admission process and a literature review on topics aligned to three pillars—beliefs, belonging, and becoming. The paper concludes with the application plan for an intervention that leverages the college admission essay and essay-writing process to reframe beliefs and shape positive personal narratives. Inspired by research from narrative psychology, social psychology, and positive psychology, OurStory challenges dominant deficit narratives and aims to improve academic outcomes, college matriculation rates, and adolescent flourishing and well-being.

In people with cystic fibrosis, a genetic, progressive disease with a shortened life expectancy, depression rates have been measured at twice the global average, which is concerning because depression is itself a risk factor for people with chronic illnesses. This empirical study aims to assess 1) how positive views in the form of optimism, hope, or positive primal world beliefs in people with cystic fibrosis compared to the general population, and 2) whether positive views correlate with better health and greater well-being in people living with cystic fibrosis. A cross-sectional design was employed using validated psychology questionnaires to determine levels of well-being in people with CF (n = 117) compared to control groups (n = 88, n = 599). Independent T-tests and ANCOVA data showed that positive views in the form of optimism, hope and primals in people with cystic fibrosis are similar to those of the general population. Linear regression models showed that optimism, hope and primals did not correlate with FEV1, the standard metric for measuring lung function. Data suggests that positive views about the future and the world can co-exist with elevated rates of depression and are independent from physical health metrics. Further research could assess if cultivating positive views could reduce levels of depression in people with cystic fibrosis.

Capstone: Applied Educational Psychology

“Educational psychology is a nexus field, with the goals of leveraging the basic science facts discovered across the subfields of psychology, the neurosciences, sociology and related fields to craft curricula, policies and programs that help people learn, help people teach, and enable these foundational societal functions to improve over time. Whether as students, teachers, administrators, advocates, coaches, or counsellors, educational psychology touches us all. Yet, what works in the lab can fail in the classroom. Applying this science to the real world comes with its own challenges, obstacles, and opportunities. In this capstone sequence we study both of these topics to equip students to succeed in designing pragmatic solutions to the problems of learning and teaching.”  — Max Krasnow, Faculty

About the Capstone

Educational psychology is the study of how students learn, what challenges interfere with their learning, and how to address these challenges.

In the precapstone course, PSYC E-597d , we develop a firm foundation in the application of psychological insights to all things education, including teaching methods, learning formats, assessment, discipline, and socioemotional growth.

The capstone course PSYC E-599d ,  builds upon the foundation established in PSYC E-597d by creating a capstone project that bridges research and practice. The project includes two components: the project prototype and the academic report.

The prototype is the specific product designed to address the real-world problem identified in the fall term proposal. Prototypes can take one of several forms. First, they can apply research to design a project to solve or address a real-world problem in the education field. Second, they may communicate scholarship to specific audiences who would benefit from knowing the information (for example, an online training, publishable article, informational website, or printable materials).

Capstone projects build on specific interests of each student and are developed in consultation with the instructor. These specialized projects allow students to seek a practical application of existing research on educational psychology, while developing their skills designing research-based practice and engaging stakeholders, whether in the role of researcher, designer, consultant, or advocate.

The capstone semester culminates with a formal oral presentation.

Examples of possible capstone projects:

  • Based on a review of existing evidence and theory, the ALM student proposes a mechanism underlying an achievement gap between students from different backgrounds. Educational materials or a teaching intervention is designed around that mechanism to close the gap, and a plan for communicating this solution is proposed.
  • Based on a review of existing evidence, the ALM student identifies a societal problem (e.g., insufficient saving for retirement, online habits that expose people to identity theft, underutilization of social safety net programs, etc.). The student crafts a solution to educate the target population through an intervention (informational website, smartphone app, workshop, etc.) based on theory in educational psychology.

psychology capstone project topics

Are you searching for a great topic for your psychology paper ? Sometimes it seems like coming up with topics of psychology research is more challenging than the actual research and writing. Fortunately, there are plenty of great places to find inspiration and the following list contains just a few ideas to help get you started.

Finding a solid topic is one of the most important steps when writing any type of paper. It can be particularly important when you are writing a psychology research paper or essay. Psychology is such a broad topic, so you want to find a topic that allows you to adequately cover the subject without becoming overwhelmed with information.

In some cases, such as in a general psychology class, you might have the option to select any topic from within psychology's broad reach. Other instances, such as in an  abnormal psychology  course, might require you to write your paper on a specific subject such as a psychological disorder.

As you begin your search for a topic for your psychology paper, it is first important to consider the guidelines established by your instructor.

Topics of Psychology Research Within Specific Branches

The key to selecting a good topic for your psychology paper is to select something that is narrow enough to allow you to really focus on the subject, but not so narrow that it is difficult to find sources or information to write about.

One approach is to narrow your focus down to a subject within a specific branch of psychology. For example, you might start by deciding that you want to write a paper on some sort of social psychology topic. Next, you might narrow your focus down to how persuasion can be used to influence behavior.

Other social psychology topics you might consider include:

  • Prejudice and discrimination (i.e., homophobia, sexism, racism)
  • Social cognition
  • Person perception
  • Social control and cults
  • Persuasion , propaganda, and marketing
  • Attraction, romance, and love
  • Nonverbal communication
  • Prosocial behavior

Psychology Research Topics Involving a Disorder or Type of Therapy

Exploring a psychological disorder or a specific treatment modality can also be a good topic for a psychology paper. Some potential abnormal psychology topics include specific psychological disorders or particular treatment modalities, including:

  • Eating disorders
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Seasonal affective disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Antisocial personality disorder
  • Profile a  type of therapy  (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, psychoanalytic therapy)

Topics of Psychology Research Related to Human Cognition

Some of the possible topics you might explore in this area include thinking, language, intelligence, and decision-making. Other ideas might include:

  • False memories
  • Speech disorders
  • Problem-solving

Topics of Psychology Research Related to Human Development

In this area, you might opt to focus on issues pertinent to  early childhood  such as language development, social learning, or childhood attachment or you might instead opt to concentrate on issues that affect older adults such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Some other topics you might consider include:

  • Language acquisition
  • Media violence and children
  • Learning disabilities
  • Gender roles
  • Child abuse
  • Prenatal development
  • Parenting styles
  • Aspects of the aging process

Do a Critique of Publications Involving Psychology Research Topics

One option is to consider writing a critique paper of a published psychology book or academic journal article. For example, you might write a critical analysis of Sigmund Freud's Interpretation of Dreams or you might evaluate a more recent book such as Philip Zimbardo's  The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil .

Professional and academic journals are also great places to find materials for a critique paper. Browse through the collection at your university library to find titles devoted to the subject that you are most interested in, then look through recent articles until you find one that grabs your attention.

Topics of Psychology Research Related to Famous Experiments

There have been many fascinating and groundbreaking experiments throughout the history of psychology, providing ample material for students looking for an interesting term paper topic. In your paper, you might choose to summarize the experiment, analyze the ethics of the research, or evaluate the implications of the study. Possible experiments that you might consider include:

  • The Milgram Obedience Experiment
  • The Stanford Prison Experiment
  • The Little Albert Experiment
  • Pavlov's Conditioning Experiments
  • The Asch Conformity Experiment
  • Harlow's Rhesus Monkey Experiments

Topics of Psychology Research About Historical Figures

One of the simplest ways to find a great topic is to choose an interesting person in the  history of psychology  and write a paper about them. Your paper might focus on many different elements of the individual's life, such as their biography, professional history, theories, or influence on psychology.

While this type of paper may be historical in nature, there is no need for this assignment to be dry or boring. Psychology is full of fascinating figures rife with intriguing stories and anecdotes. Consider such famous individuals as Sigmund Freud, B.F. Skinner, Harry Harlow, or one of the many other  eminent psychologists .

Psychology Research Topics About a Specific Career

Another possible topic, depending on the course in which you are enrolled, is to write about specific career paths within the  field of psychology . This type of paper is especially appropriate if you are exploring different subtopics or considering which area interests you the most.

In your paper, you might opt to explore the typical duties of a psychologist, how much people working in these fields typically earn, and the different employment options that are available.

Topics of Psychology Research Involving Case Studies

One potentially interesting idea is to write a  psychology case study  of a particular individual or group of people. In this type of paper, you will provide an in-depth analysis of your subject, including a thorough biography.

Generally, you will also assess the person, often using a major psychological theory such as  Piaget's stages of cognitive development  or  Erikson's eight-stage theory of human development . It is also important to note that your paper doesn't necessarily have to be about someone you know personally.

In fact, many professors encourage students to write case studies on historical figures or fictional characters from books, television programs, or films.

Psychology Research Topics Involving Literature Reviews

Another possibility that would work well for a number of psychology courses is to do a literature review of a specific topic within psychology. A literature review involves finding a variety of sources on a particular subject, then summarizing and reporting on what these sources have to say about the topic.

Literature reviews are generally found in the  introduction  of journal articles and other  psychology papers , but this type of analysis also works well for a full-scale psychology term paper.

Topics of Psychology Research Based on Your Own Study or Experiment

Many psychology courses require students to design an actual psychological study or perform some type of experiment. In some cases, students simply devise the study and then imagine the possible results that might occur. In other situations, you may actually have the opportunity to collect data, analyze your findings, and write up your results.

Finding a topic for your study can be difficult, but there are plenty of great ways to come up with intriguing ideas. Start by considering your own interests as well as subjects you have studied in the past.

Online sources, newspaper articles, books , journal articles, and even your own class textbook are all great places to start searching for topics for your experiments and psychology term papers. Before you begin, learn more about  how to conduct a psychology experiment .

A Word From Verywell

After looking at this brief list of possible topics for psychology papers, it is easy to see that psychology is a very broad and diverse subject. While this variety makes it possible to find a topic that really catches your interest, it can sometimes make it very difficult for some students to select a good topic.

If you are still stumped by your assignment, ask your instructor for suggestions and consider a few from this list for inspiration.

Capstone Options

Psychology BA majors may select between three experiences, including a research laboratory capstone (PSY 3901W), individual interest capstone (PSY 3902W), and community engagement capstone (PSY 3903W). The course you choose will determine the specific requirements and expectations associated with your capstone experience.

Watch the video at the top of the page to and read the descriptions below to learn more about the Psychology Capstone Course and which track is most suitable for you:

Capstone in Psychology - Research Laboratory: PSY 3901W

The research lab project allows you to take full advantage of the abundance of psychological research happening right here in the Department of Psychology. In this option, you will draw from your experience in a faculty research lab ( PSY 4/5993 ) to help develop the topic of your capstone paper for the PSY 3901W class. This option requires you to secure a laboratory research experience in a faculty member's lab for PSY 4/5993 credits (3 credits minimum) either the semester prior to or concurrently with your PSY 3901W enrollment. Because research lab positions are not guaranteed, we recommend BA students only select this option if they already have a PSY 4/5993 position secured.

Before class begins: Arrange to assist in the lab of a faculty member through PSY 4/5993.

Capstone in Psychology - Individual Interests: PSY 3902W

The individual interest project involves developing a project that relates to your personal or occupational interests; it includes extra reading or contact with people working in your area of interest. The most common way to satisfy this requirement is to read a book written by a psychologist for a general audience or to interview at least three professionals working in your area of interest. Other ideas may be discussed with the course instructor.

Before class begins: You do not need to take any action prior to the start of the individual interest capstone.

Capstone in Psychology - Community Engagement: PSY 3903W

Interested in connecting your studies of psychology to important issues in your local community? The Center for Community-Engaged Learning  provides you with the opportunity to work onsite at a nearby community organization for approximately four hours each week throughout the semester. You will then draw from this community experience to help identify the topic of your capstone paper for the PSY 3903W class.

Before class begins: You do not need to take any action to find a community placement site until you receive an email from the Center for Community-Engaged Learning staff but you are welcome to get started early. You will receive the email either right before the term begins or within the first week of class. It will contain detailed instructions on how to move forward with the community site placement process, which involves being given access to a database filled with service positions. Otherwise, feel free to reach out to the Center before the semester starts if you would like to get started early.

Master's in Clinical Counseling Psychology > Capstone

  • Plan of Study
  • Alumni Careers

Students admitted to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology Program have the option of completing either a clinical-counseling capstone project or a master's thesis in order to fulfill their degree requirements. Details about the thesis option are available on the Thesis website . The Clinical-Counseling Capstone Project procedures are explained below.

In order to complete the capstone project in a timely manner, students should begin researching appropriate topics during their first year of graduate study. Students should solicit a Clinical-Counseling Psychology faculty member as their project chair no later than the end of spring semester of the first year. In the early stages of the project, the student and faculty member typically work together to develop an appropriate topic. It is recommended that students review what is being published in current clinical and counseling psychology journals for potential capstone project topics.

By the start of the fall semester of the second year, students should complete the  CLINICAL-COUNSELING CAPSTONE PROJECT CHAIR and TOPIC  form, which identifies both the project chair and topic. The form also includes an override request for PSY 490 Clinical-Counseling Capstone Project. The Project Chair form is an interactive Word document that should be completed on a computer and printed. Students and faculty members should sign and date the Project Chair form, which should then be submitted to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology Program coordinator. When the Project Chair form is approved by the coordinator, the Graduate Programs Office will notify students when they can register for PSY 490.

Students will work with their project chair to further develop the topic. Students must write a capstone project paper. When the paper is nearly complete, students and their project chair should solicit another Clinical-Counseling Psychology faculty member as the project reader. The project chair and reader should independently evaluate the capstone project paper. The project chair, in consultation with the reader, must approve the project paper before the student can schedule an oral defense of the capstone project. If the project chair identifies any changes to the capstone project paper, the student must complete these changes and submit a revised capstone project paper to the project chair and reader for a second evaluation.

The capstone project requires student to write an intensive theoretical paper, research review, or position paper on an emerging topic or issue of contemporary relevance. The project must be at least 30 pages long, excluding references. The project must address the relevance of the topic in the following areas:

  • Foundations of behavior (normal and/or abnormal)
  • Assessment and measurement
  • Applications to therapy
  • Relevant ethical and professional issues
  • Cultural considerations and relevance to special populations
  • Research challenges and needs

For example, a student may be interested in panic disorder. The project might address how panic disorder is assessed and diagnosed, what form the behavior takes and its etiology, how panic disorder is treated, any relevant ethical or professional issues in the assessment and treatment of panic disorder, future research directions needed, and cultural differences in the assessment and treatment of panic disorder. Some of these domains would require more depth than others given the project's topic, but all of the domains must be addressed in a satisfactory manner in the capstone project before it is defended.

After receiving approval from the project chair, students must defend their capstone project in a public forum. The project chair and reader will be in attendance along with any members of the University academic community who are interested in the project's topic. The department encourages graduate students to attend a capstone project defense in order to observe the process.

The capstone project should be defended at a time that is mutually agreeable to the student, project chair, and reader. The capstone project must be defended between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, while classes are in session (i.e., excluding University holidays, final exams week, or semester breaks). When an acceptable time has been determined, students should contact the Graduate Programs Office to reserve a room. The Graduate Programs Office will notify the students when a room has been reserved. Students also need to inform the Graduate Programs Office which faculty member is the project reader.

At least one week before the defense date, students must submit to the Graduate Programs Office by 12:00 p.m. (Noon) a printed copy of the capstone project. Students must also provide a copy of the project to the project chair and reader; the copy may be printed or sent electronically, depending on the preferences of the project chair and reader. The Graduate Programs Office will announce the scheduled defense to the department's graduate students and faculty members. The capstone project defense will also be posted on the University Events website and on the bulletin board across from the department's office. Students must also complete the OUTCOME OF CLINICAL-COUNSELING CAPSTONE PROJECT DEFENSE  form. Students should take this Defense form to their project defense.

During the defense, the project chair and reader will assess the student’s understanding of the issues raised in the capstone project. Students are expected to summarize their project and answer questions from individuals at the defense. When the discussion has ended, everyone should leave the room except for the project chair and reader. The project chair and reader will discuss the quality of the written and oral components of the capstone project. When the deliberations are complete and a decision has been reached, the student will be asked to return to the room. If the defense is approved by the project chair and reader, the student has passed the defense and the project is complete. The project chair and reader should sign the Outcome of the Clinical-Counseling Capstone Project Defense form. The project chair should submit the signed Defense form to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology coordinator. After the student passes the defense, the final project (incorporating any required changes communicated to the student during the defense) must be submitted electronically to the Clinical-Counseling Psychology coordinator.

If either the defense or responses to the questions during the defense are not satisfactory, the student must schedule a second defense for a later date. If the student does not pass the second oral defense, then the student will not be able to complete the project, which is a master's degree requirement.

Students who have completed all course work and practica, but are still working on a capstone project, must maintain continuous enrollment until they successfully defend their project. Students must register for one credit of PSY 490 each fall and spring semester until the capstone project is successfully defended. Registration for PSY 490 in the summer is required only when a student expects to defend the capstone project and complete the degree by the end of the summer semester. Students should contact the Graduate Programs Office at [email protected] to request an override for PSY 490.

Capstone Project Ideas & Topics

June 12, 2023

Capstone project is a large-scale, complex and original research project that you have to do during your studies. The purpose of such projects is to train students in the process of independent research, to develop their creative abilities and improve their knowledge of professional skills. Students can take part in this project at any stage of education: from high school, through college, university and postgraduate studies.

The main goal of capstone projects development is to give future professionals an opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge, skills and abilities in practice. It also helps them get acquainted with the theoretical basis for solving problems related to the chosen specialization area.

What Does Capstone Project Include?

A capstone project usually consists of two parts:

  • The first part is an individual activity where students apply their knowledge in real-world situations. This gives them an opportunity to create something with their own ideas, which they can use as a portfolio piece when applying for jobs or graduate school.
  • The second part is a group activity where students work together on a project they need to complete by a deadline. This gives them experience working in teams and solving problems as well as networking with other students and learning how to collaborate with people who may not be as familiar with the subject matter as they are.

How to Pick Up Capstone Project Ideas

As a capstone project is the final product of study, it is essential to pick up a good topic for a capstone paper. The topic should be such that can be studied in details. It should also be interesting and challenging for a student as well as for a professor. To find out a good topic, follow these steps:

  • Write down all the things that are related to the subject. Write down everything that comes to mind related to study. It could be any topic from the past papers, research papers or even from the lectures attended while doing your coursework.
  • Read through all the ideas written down and select those which are most relevant to the coursework and also interesting. Try not to select more than 3 topics because it will become difficult to complete each one of them within time limit given by professor.
  • Once few topics have been selected, then start looking at their pros and cons. This will help to decide which topic suits best for the capstone paper
  • See if there is any recent movement in the field. If there is any recent movement, then try getting involved in it and make sure that you get an opportunity for it. Look also for trends which will help in picking up topics for a project.
  • Look at other students’ projects. Another way to find good topics is by looking at other students’ projects who have taken similar subjects and learning from them how they approached their subjects. This would provide an idea about what kind of methods should be used when doing such projects.

A Capstone project is a culminating academic project that is typically required of students nearing the end of their studies. The significance of a Capstone project lies in the fact that it provides an opportunity for students to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout their studies to solve a real-world problem or address a specific issue.

Here are some reasons why Capstone projects are significant:

1. Integration of Knowledge

Capstone projects require students to integrate and apply knowledge gained across multiple courses in their program. This integration of knowledge allows students to see the connections between different subject areas and to apply a holistic approach to problem-solving.

2. Real-world Experience

Capstone projects often involve working on a project for a real client or addressing a real-world issue. This provides students with valuable experience in working with real clients and stakeholders, conducting research, and applying theoretical concepts to practical problems.

3. Demonstration of Skills

Capstone projects provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills they have acquired over the course of their studies. This includes critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and communication skills.

Career Preparation

Capstone projects can help students prepare for their future careers by providing them with practical experience, networking opportunities, and a portfolio of work to showcase to potential employers.

In summary, Capstone projects are significant because they provide students with an opportunity to integrate and apply their knowledge, gain real-world experience, demonstrate their skills, and prepare for their future careers.

Elements of Capstone Project

Capstone projects can vary depending on the academic discipline, institution, and level of study. However, there are several common elements that are typically included in a Capstone project:

The Capstone project begins with the selection of a topic, which is often related to the student’s area of study or research interest. The topic should be significant, relevant, and feasible to research and complete within the given timeframe.

2. Proposal

The student is required to submit a proposal that outlines the problem or issue they aim to address, the research questions, methodology, and expected outcomes. The proposal is typically reviewed and approved by a faculty advisor or a Capstone committee.

3. Literature Review

Students are required to conduct a comprehensive literature review of existing research related to the chosen topic. This helps to provide a theoretical foundation for the project and identify gaps in existing research that the Capstone project aims to address.

4. Research Methodology

Students need to identify and apply appropriate research methods and techniques to collect data and analyze it. This could involve conducting surveys, interviews, experiments, or analyzing existing data sources.

5. Results And Analysis

Students need to present the results of their research in a clear and organized manner, including data analysis, graphs, and charts, which are used to support their findings.

6. Conclusion And Recommendations

Students need to provide a conclusion that summarizes the findings and recommendations for future research and practice. This is typically presented in a written report or a presentation to a Capstone committee.

7. Reflection

Finally, students are often required to reflect on the Capstone project experience, including the challenges and successes encountered during the project. This reflection allows students to critically evaluate their work and identify areas for improvement.

5 Forensic Psychology Capstone Project Ideas

Capstone project ideas for forensic psychology.

  • Research Paper
  • Dissertation
  • Oral Presentation
  • Historical Analysis Of The Field

As a forensic psychology student nearing graduation, you are probably hard-pressed to find a capstone project idea that is appealing. However, with the vast amount of information on forensic psychology, including fraudulent acts by conmen who have deceived the court system, it has become much easier to choose a capstone project, according to The Guardian . Here are five of the best ideas to get you thinking about how to craft your capstone.

1. Research Paper

The most common capstone project for forensic psychology students is a research paper, which is also called a research interest paper. This is a paper that has a topic that is approved by the department head or the student’s advisor and can take up to one academic year to complete. In the forensic psychology concentration, it could include experiments conducted by the student in a supervised setting, interviews with formidable professionals in the field, and more. The research paper is generally on a topic not yet well researched and could be submitted to a journal for publication.

2. Case Study

A unique idea for a capstone project for forensic psychology students is the case study, a real-world study of a case that involves forensic psychology. Case studies are generally an analysis of one study and provide students with the ability to discuss different aspects of the case. For example, a case study analysis could discuss the conflicts inherent in forensic psychology and how they can negatively impact criminal trials. Alternatively, case study analysis could provide great examples of how the field can be used effectively in determining the mental state of a criminal and how forensic psychology can spot aberrant behavior with enough perspective to avoid a criminal act.

3. Dissertation

Dissertations are often cited as the most common form of a capstone project, especially in the realm of forensic psychology. This perhaps has to do with the fact that dissertations are common at the graduate level, and since many psychology students wish to attend graduate school for the field of forensic psychology, practice with a dissertation is deemed necessary. The paper can be written on just about any aspect of forensic psychology and must always include a thesis which dictates the point of view of the student. These are then defended in front of a department committee, after which it can be submitted to publications for peer review.

4. oral presentation.

An oral presentation as a capstone project is similar to a dissertation; however, it differs because presentations do not require an oral or written defense of the presentation. In this sense, it is an incredible opportunity for forensic psychology students as they have the opportunity to discuss one aspect of the field in depth and present it to their cohort or the department which leads their degree. Topics are numerous and can lead students to showcase new advancements in forensic psychology, such as new interview techniques, or to discuss how the field has had its share of conflicts in the past. The oral presentation can be accompanied by slideshows, video interviews, a research paper, or any number of materials that could present the student’s thesis.

5. Historical Analysis Of The Field

While perhaps an uncommon idea for a capstone project, a historical analysis of the forensic psychology field could be an interesting choice. Since the field is still relatively new, an analysis of how it has evolved over the years, including how the laws have changed in order for forensic psychologists to give evidence at trials and the relationship between science and psychology has played a role in criminal cases, would be a welcome capstone project for any student interested in the field.

Forensic psychology is an unfolding field, and while it has proven useful to the criminal justice system, it still has a long way to go in proving its efficacy to the public. That’s where students come in; their projects in college can pave the way for their career interests to be of great use in the field. Now that we’ve covered five forensic psychology capstone project ideas, students can carry on deciding what topic they want their project to cover.
