What makes a strong social media research topic.

A strong social media research topic requires clarity of focus. This means that your topic must be timely, relevant, and coherent. This allows your research topic to be compelling and easily understandable to others.

Tips for Choosing a Social Media Research Topic

  • Know the trends. Learning what social media topics are trending allows you to know the relevant issues and emergent themes in the field of social media. This also lets you know what topics are well-researched and which ones are still emerging.
  • Explore knowledge gaps. Knowing what previous researchers have written prevents you from repeating knowledge that has already been explored and shared. Nobody wants to reinvent the wheel when doing research. Exploring knowledge gaps lets you increase the impact of your work and identify opportunities for further research.
  • Choose something that you’re interested in. Diving deep into a topic that you’re interested in motivates you to learn more about it. The research process becomes more engaging when you know you care about your topic.
  • Be specific. Knowing what you want to research and what you don’t want to research are keys to the research process. This entails narrowing down your topic to a specific area, subject, theme, or relationship. You want to know the scope and the limitations of your study.
  • Check your timeframe. Limiting your topic to a specific timeframe helps in narrowing down what you need to study. For example, you can decide to study a phenomenon that has emerged in just the last three years. By doing this, you’re making sure that your research is both specific and relevant.

What’s the Difference Between a Research Topic and a Research Question?

The difference between a research topic and a research question is in the scope. Research topics tend to be broader than research questions. Research topics focus on a specific area of study within a larger field, while a research question further narrows down what you are researching. A good research question allows you to write on your topic with greater precision.

13 social media research topics to explore in 2024

Last updated

15 January 2024

Reviewed by

Miroslav Damyanov

To help you choose a specific area to examine, here are some of the top social media research topics that are relevant in 2024.

  • What makes a strong social media research topic?

Consider the factors below to ensure your topic is strong and compelling:

Clarity: regardless of the topic you investigate, clarity is essential. It ensures readers will be able to understand your work and any wider learnings. Your argument should be clear and your language unambiguous.

Trend relevancy: you need to know what’s currently happening in social media to draw relevant conclusions. Before choosing a topic, consider current popular platforms, trending content, and current use cases to ensure you understand social media as it is today.

New insights: if your research is to be new, innovative, and helpful for the wider population, it should cover areas that haven’t been studied before. Look into what’s already been thoroughly researched to help you uncover knowledge gaps that could be good focus areas.

  • Tips for choosing social media research topics

When considering social media research questions, it’s also important to consider whether you’re the right person to conduct that area of study. Your skills, interests, and time allocated will all impact your suitability.

Consider your skillset: your specific expertise is highly valuable when conducting research. Choosing a topic that aligns with your skills will help ensure you can add a thorough analysis and your own learnings.

Align with your interests: if you’re deeply interested in a topic, you’re much more likely to enjoy the process and dedicate the time it needs for a thorough analysis.

Consider your resources: the time you have available to complete the research, your allocated funds, and access to resources should all impact the research topic you choose.

  • 13 social media research paper topics

To help you choose the right area of research, we’ve rounded up some of the most compelling topics within the sector. These ideas may also help you come up with your own.

1. The influence of social media on mental health

It’s well-documented that social media can impact mental health. For example, a significant amount of research has highlighted the link between social media and conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress—but there’s still more to uncover in this area.

There are high rates of mental illness worldwide, so there’s continual interest in ways to understand and mitigate it. Studies could focus on the following areas:

The reasons why social media can impact mental health

How social media can impact specific mental health conditions (you might also look at different age groups here)

How to reduce social media’s impact on mental health

2. The effects of social media exposure on child development

There are many unknowns with social media. More research is needed to understand how it impacts children. As such, this is a very valuable research area.

You might explore the following topics:

How social media impacts children at different ages

The long-term effects of childhood social media use

The benefits of social media use in children

How social media use impacts childhood socialization, communication, and learning

3. The role of social media in political campaigning

Social media’s role in political campaigning is nothing new. The Cambridge Analytica Scandal, for example, involved data from millions of Facebook profiles being sold to a third party for political advertising. Many believe this could have impacted the 2016 US election results. Ultimately, Facebook had to pay a private class-action lawsuit of $725 million.

The role of social media in political campaigns is of global significance. Concerns are still high that social media can play a negative role in elections due to the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and the bandwagon effect.

Research in this area could look into the following topics:

How people are influenced by social media when it comes to voting

Ways to mitigate misinformation

Election interference and how this can be prevented

4. The role of social media in misinformation and disinformation

Misinformation and disinformation mean slightly different things. Misinformation is unintentionally sharing false or inaccurate information, while disinformation is sharing false information with the deliberate intent to mislead people.

Both can play a role not just in elections but throughout social media. This became particularly problematic during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research into this area is important given the widespread risk that comes with spreading false information about health and safety-related topics.

Here are some potential research areas:

How misinformation and disinformation are spread via social media

The impact of false information (you could focus on how it impacts health, for example)

Strategies for mitigating the impact of false information and encouraging critical thinking

The avenues through which to hold technology companies accountable for spreading misinformation

5. The impact of AI and deepfakes on social media

AI technology is expected to continue expanding in 2024. Some are concerned that this could impact social media. One concern is the potential for the widespread use of deepfake technology—a form of AI that uses deep learning to create fake images.

Fake images can be used to discredit, shame, and control others, so researchers need to deeply understand this area of technology. You might look into the following areas:

The potential impacts of deepfakes on businesses and their reputations

Deepfake identities on social media: privacy concerns and other risks

How deepfake images can be identified, controlled, and prevented

6. How social media can benefit communities

While there’s much research into the potential negative impacts of social media, it can also provide many benefits.

Social media can establish connections for those who might otherwise be isolated in the community. It can facilitate in-person gatherings and connect people who are physically separated, such as relatives who live in different countries. Social media can also provide critical information to communities quickly in the case of emergencies.

Research into the ways social media can provide these key benefits can make interesting topics. You could consider the following:

Which social media platforms offer the most benefits

How to better use social media to lean into these benefits

How new social platforms could connect us in more helpful ways

7. The psychology of social media

Social media psychology explores human behavior in relation to social media. There are a range of topics within social media psychology, including the following:

The influence of social media on social comparison

Addiction and psychological dependence on social media

How social media increases the risk of cyberbullying

How social media use impacts people’s attention spans

Social interactions and the impact on socialization

Persuasion and influence on social media

8. How communication has evolved through social media

Social media has provided endless ways for humans to connect and interact, so the ways we do this have evolved.

Most obviously, social media has provided ways to connect instantaneously via real-time messaging and communicate using multimedia formats, including text, images, emojis, video content, and audio.

This has made communication more accessible and seamless, especially given many people now own smartphones that can connect to social media apps from anywhere.

You might consider researching the following topics:

How social media has changed the way people communicate

The impacts of being continuously connected, both positive and negative

How communication may evolve in the future due to social media

9. Social media platforms as primary news sources

As social media use has become more widespread, many are accessing news information primarily from their newsfeeds. This can be particularly problematic, given that newsfeeds are personalized providing content to people based on their data.

This can cause people to live in echo chambers, where they are constantly targeted with content that aligns with their beliefs. This can cause people to become more entrenched in their way of thinking and more unable or unwilling to see other people’s opinions and points of view.

Research in this area could consider the following:

The challenges that arise from using social media platforms as a primary news source

The pros and cons of social media: does it encourage “soloization” or diverse perspectives?

How to prevent social media echo chambers from occurring

The impact of social media echo chambers on journalistic integrity

10. How social media is impacting modern journalism

News platforms typically rely on an advertising model where more clicks and views increase revenue. Since sensationalist stories can attract more clicks and shares on social media, modern journalism is evolving.

Journalists are often rewarded for writing clickbait headlines and content that’s more emotionally triggering (and therefore shareable).

Your research could cover the following areas:

How journalism is evolving due to social media

How to mitigate social media’s impact on neutral reporting

The importance of journalistic standards in the age of social media

11. The impact of social media on traditional advertising

Digital advertising is growing in popularity. Worldwide, ad spending on social media was expected to reach $207.1 billion in 2023 . Experts estimate that ad spending on mobile alone will reach $255.8 billion by 2028 . This move continues to impact traditional advertising, which takes place via channels like print, TV, and radio.

Most organizations consider their social strategy a critical aspect of their advertising program. Many exclusively advertise on social media—especially those with limited budgets.

Here are some interesting research topics in this areaThe impact of different advertising methods

Which social media advertising channels provide the highest return on investment (ROI)

The societal impacts of social media advertising

12. Impacts of social media presence on corporate image

Social media presence can provide companies with an opportunity to be visible and increase brand awareness. Social media also provides a key way to interact with customers.

More and more customers now expect businesses to be online. Research shows that 63% of customers expect companies to offer customer service via their social media channels, while a whopping 90% have connected with a brand or business through social media.

Research in this area could focus on the following topics:

The advantages and disadvantages of social media marketing for businesses

How social media can impact a business’s corporate image

How social media can boost customer experience and loyalty

13. How social media impacts data privacy

Using social media platforms is free for the most part, but users have to provide their personal data for the privilege. This means data collection, tracking, the potential for third parties to access that data, psychological profiling, geolocation, and tracking are all potential risks for users.

Data security and privacy are of increasing interest globally. Research within this area will likely be in high demand in 2024.

Here are some of the research topics you might want to consider in this area:

Common privacy concerns with social media use

Why is social media privacy important?

What can individuals do to protect their data when using social media?

  • The importance of social media research

As social media use continues to expand in the US and around the world, there’s continual interest in research on the topic. The research you conduct could positively impact many groups of people.

Topics can cover a broad range of areas. You might look at how social media can harm or benefit people, how social media can impact journalism, how platforms can impact young people, or the data privacy risks involved with social media use. The options are endless, and new research topics will present themselves as technology evolves.

Conducting Social Media Research: How to Find Real Consumer Insights

Social is a rich source of data but only if you know how to conduct good social media research. This post explains the methods for finding consumer insights

Social media research can surface consumer insights that can be difficult and expensive to find in any other way. The volume of conversation on the web gives this research method a unique ability – uncovering qualitative insights on a quantitative scale.

For many people, however, it can be daunting. There is so much data: millions upon millions of conversations happen online every day. If you don’t know how to refine what you are listening to, you’ll drown in the data.

It’s also easy to rely on the metrics that are constantly produced on social: likes, followers, fans and so on. Knowing how to cut through the noise to find the information that can drive business decisions is a real skill. I recently spoke to Bex Carson, Head of Brandwatch’s Research Services team, to get an insight into best practice when it comes to social media research.

social media research puts the whole world in your hands

Developing an approach to social media research

Uncovering insights requires a certain approach. You need to move beyond the simple social metrics to uncover robust insights that can recommend a real business action. The problem can be knowing who to listen to, how to spot a trend, knowing what’s significant and putting your findings into context.

Many people will start with the metrics they know about. They then think about the questions it is possible to answer with those metrics, and develop a research plan based on that. A good social intelligence tool has the flexibility that renders this way of thinking very restrictive – it starts with what was already known and therefore limits the possibilities of what can be discovered.

Ask interesting questions

The foundation for good social media research is asking the right questions. If you start with a bad question, you’ll receive a bad answer.

Start by forgetting any concerns about how you are going to conduct the research. Focus on the problems and questions you need to answer, without thinking about the methodology. Once you have the question, you can work on the methodology.

With Brandwatch there’s a way to answer pretty much any question. The joy of social media is its flexibility and Brandwatch Analytics has been built to be flexible to match that.

Bex Carson, Head of Research Services, Brandwatch

The questions need to be specific. They need to be able to deliver an answer that can be acted upon. Examples of this sort of question might be “What do women in their 50s want from a fashion brand?” or “Is our content resonating with our target customers?”

Ask the right questions

Spend time developing questions, and brainstorm with others where possible. Consider the following:

  • What do we want to be able to do that is different based on this research?
  • What capacity/power/authority for change does the reader of the report have?
  • How do I recognize success? What does good look like?
  • What do I already know about this subject/audience?
  • Is my question answerable within the timeframe available?

Do better analysis

There are two main approaches you can take to answering your questions. The first involves uncovering metrics that answer a defined question. The second is more of an exploratory approach, discovering insights as you work through the data. Where time and budget allows, a combination of the two approaches will generally reveal the most interesting and robust answers.

The best social media research that produces the best results will combine some elements of both. That way you know you are investing time to get definite answers to specific questions, but you’re leaving yourself open to discover something new about your audience.

BEX CARSON, BRANDWATCH

Structured and planned analysis.

For this type of research, you are looking for an answer to a specific question. You need to identify specific metrics that you can bring together to answer that question. By using the power of segmentation – Brandwatch’s Rules , Categories, and Tags – you can arrive at specific answers.

You can take a structured approach to social media research

This method is great for answering defined, objective questions. For example, if you have run a campaign and want to know if it drove spontaneous awareness, you can look at the volume of discussion for both the campaign assets and the brand baseline over time. These relatively simple queries will result in metrics that uncover the success of your campaign.

Follow the breadcrumbs analysis

This approach is exploratory, listening to the data to discover the story within it. Think of it as  social media ethnography. You can arrive at a fuller understanding of your consumers, uncovering different audience groups as you move through the data and spot trends.

This methodology can be a challenge. You need to enter the project without preconceptions and ensure you don’t draw your own conclusions. It’s a harder way  to conduct social media research – using open listening to find underlying themes.

The benefits are plentiful, though. First, you are closer to the  voice of the customer . There is no substitute for listening to your customers verbatim, understanding the nuance and sentiment of their conversations.

As a human analyst, you can understand and categorize things that a machine simply can’t. Someone might be talking about the same topic even if they don’t use the same words. Reading through the conversations, you can find people might talk in a way that you hadn’t thought of, and use that to enrich your research.

1. Decide on your dataset

Broad topics and themes often drive more interesting results than brand queries. You want to analyze of a type of conversation rather than a particular brand.  Within the conversation theme, you still need to define the problem clearly so you can create a targeted query and reduce noise in the data.

decide on your dataset

As an example, let’s say you wanted to know what people who have seen the movie thought about the new Ghostbusters film . If you just wrote a query on Ghostbusters, there would be a lot of conversation around the all-female cast, or the abuse that Leslie Jones received on Twitter.

By writing a query that includes personal pronouns, mentions of cinema brands, people saying “just seen/watched” and so on, you will have a much cleaner data set without manipulating it too much.

2. Clean your data

This can be a really important way of revealing the interesting, more concealed consumer insights. Many topics can be dominated by a few obvious and popular themes, so that the insights get lost in comparison.

You want to surface underlying themes with a unique value, rather things you can see easily on a topic cloud/trend line. To do this, you can look at you initial query results to identify the popular themes, and then exclude those mentions by using tags.

The data that remains lets you see what else people are saying beyond what you already know. It can also be useful to remove retweets, leaving you with only the original conversations.

3. Take a random sample

While automation can be a useful tool, the type of analysis we are talking about here is human led. This means you need a manageable dataset. It needs to be large enough to be representative of the mentions, but small enough so it can be read completely, and in detail. Mark off the mentions as you work through them to ensure you cover your whole sample.

This allows you to undertake the next step…

4. Read and code using grouped categories

There is no right way to do this step, and it will largely depend on your dataset. This is where you go on a journey of discovery, hunting down the insights in the data. You want to start grouping themes and topics.

You can start by creating categories that you think you are going to find. To go back to the Ghostbusters example, you would expect some people to say they “loved it”, others that “hated it”, and everything in between.

It’s important to remember that this is just a starting point. You need to be completely data-led. New themes will emerge as you work through the data, so you need to add these.

Human analysis allows you to have nuanced emotional categories, such as anger, frustration, humor, joy and so on. A human analyst is able to pick these up where automated processes would not be able to.

categorization of emotions

You can also set up categories for author type, to understand the different conversations among different actors.

Brandwatch allows you to group categories together, so each emotional or author response can form a sub-group within a parent group. This can prove useful during your analysis.

Crucially, you want to liberally add categories as you read through the data. At the end, you might find there were only a couple of mentions of one category and decide to delete it. It’s better to do this than be conservative and realize you missed an important topic of discussion only once you reach the end of the dataset.

5. Analyze and chart

Now you need to dive into the charts and start analyzing.

The best way to start is to simply create a standard chart component and apply filters to the data. You can start looking at your different categories, moving the data around to spot interesting patterns.

Some of the most useful insights come from crossing your parent categories. So if you have author type on one axis, and emotion on the other, you can start to see different emotional responses from different author types.

Golden rules for social media research

1. compare everything and constantly seek out difference.

The fundamental tenet of social media research is noticing a difference between things. You don’t know what good looks like without seeing the bad, but you are looking for a significant difference. You don’t want to recommend sweeping changes because of a tiny difference in the data. Be curious and keep exploring.

If you want to be interesting, be interested.

2. Be curious and ask why

If you notice a difference, start digging into it. Then dig some more. Keep digging until you have read something that helps explain why that difference exists.

You can’t create a suggested action based on a piece of data if you don’t understand why that piece of data is the way that it is.

be curious when doing research

Presenting your social media research

First, remember that you are telling a story. With any story, you need to consider your audience.

There may be several people or departments that are going to read your report. They won’t all have the same amount of time available to read what you have written, and they might not all be interested in the same things.

While it’s a good idea to start with a methodology to give the report transparency, hit them with the key findings and consumer insights straight away.

Then, as you continue through the story of the data, you can explain each insight more thoroughly with charts, graphs, and analysis to back it up.

Having insights buried in a 27 page PDF is frustrating and risks your hard work being overlooked.

Finally, remember that you’re not really telling your story; you’re telling the story of the people you’re listening to, so make sure to include the voice of the customer. Real examples of social posts, with real customer profile pictures, will bring your social media research to life.

Selection of the Best Social Media Research Topics in 2023

What Are The Elements of a Good Social Media Research Paper

When you have an objective to explore social media research topics , you have to narrow things down because one faces the risks of addressing every aspect of the social environment. The main characteristic that one has to check when choosing a great topic on social media is the thesis statement that will make an argument or show what issue will be researched. For example, when you talk about cyberbullying or the culture of Instagram influencers, you have to make a clear statement and provide an outline with an accessible structure and statistical data to support your arguments.

How to Choose a Suitable Social Media Research Topic

Most importantly, you must choose something you know well and a discussion that inspires you. When you are not passionate about the subject , you will not find sufficient aspects or keep the content static. As you choose a research topic about social media , think about what needs to be researched better and avoid the most common ideas that have already been discussed and researched before. The key element is finding keywords that will instantly make things clear. While it may not be possible to include everything in the topic sentence, the word sequence is essential!

What's the Difference Between Choosing a Research Topic and a Research Question?

A research question is your main argument and can relate to your thesis statement. Sometimes, a college or university professor will provide you with a prompt that will make it easier to follow an idea or a problem. Likewise, you may have several social media research questions where you have to narrow things down and accumulate things in a research topic. It will help specify what you plan to research and show what your paper does not contain. The research topic should also be connected to a research question but do not copy it word for word.

How Do You Choose The Perfect Social Media Research Topics?

Social media is a significant aspect of our daily existence. There are so many exciting research topics for your college paper or project. Picking the right one can be tricky, but here is how to narrow it down.

1. Think About Your Interests

Start by brainstorming what social media platforms and topics interest you. Are you into Instagram trends? Facebook analytics? Snapchat filters? Knowing your interests will help you pick a topic you want to research and learn about.

2. Consider Current Events

Look at what’s happening right now in the social media world. Are people debating about privacy settings? Is a new platform getting popular? Current events and controversies make cool research topics.

3. Look for Gaps in Research

Search online to see what other studies have already been done. Then, you can find gaps where more research is needed. Filling those gaps by studying something new can lead to incredible discoveries.

4. Talk to Your Teacher

Your teacher will know good topics related to what you’re studying in class. See if they have suggestions based on what would work for the assignment. Their guidance can help narrow your choices.

5. Start Broad, Then Narrow Down

Begin with a broad subject like “Social Media and Culture,” then gradually narrow it down as you go. Add details about the specific platform, users, or effects you want to focus on for a defined topic.

6. Consider Your Research Method

Will you do surveys, interviews, observations, or experiments? Some topics work better with certain research methods. Think about how you’ll conduct the study when weighing your options.

7. Pick a Topic That’s Manageable

Make sure you pick a focused enough topic to research and reasonably write about within the time frame. A subject that’s too broad can be hard to tackle.

8. Write Down a List of Ideas

Keep a running list of all your potential topic ideas. Cross off the ones that don’t work. Circle your top choices. Taking notes helps to arrange your ideas.

9. Discuss Ideas with Classmates

Your classmates might have great suggestions you haven’t thought of. Or they can help you decide between topic options. Talking it through can give you a fresh perspective.

10. Don’t Forget About Your Passion!

Most importantly, choose a topic that you genuinely care about and excites you. Your enthusiasm will motivate you through the research process.

Hopefully, these tips will make it easier to pick the perfect social media research topic for your project.

What Makes A Perfect Social Media Research Topic?

Take into account the following factors to make sure your topic is powerful and exciting:

First, your topic should be super easy to understand so people understand what you’re discussing. Choose something that’s not confusing or vague.

Second, it should relate to what’s happening now with social media and not be about old platforms or trends no one cares about anymore. Look at what sites and apps are popular today to pick a topic that matters.

New Insights

Finally, your research should uncover stuff people don’t already know. If there’s already a ton of studies on the same thing, it won’t be that interesting. Look for gaps in our knowledge so your work teaches us something new.

Researching social media is so essential for students today. We practically live our lives on sites like Instagram and TikTok. We could learn much about how social media impacts society, relationships, and mental health.

The possibilities are endless for research topics! Don’t be afraid to dive in and choose something you feel passionate about. Your research can create real change and impact. You have control over what happens next, so make it meaningful.

How to Select Social Media Research Topic

If you have a sociology paper due, here are some simple tips that will help you choose the right research topics on social media:

  • Write on a topic that is trending: For instance, you can explore the role of social media during the pandemic. It became a very useful tool to share vital information while it was also instrumental in opening up a platform for creating panic through misinformation.
  • Look for topics that everyone can relate to: When you think of a social media research topic, you tend to think of subjects that are associated with youngsters. However, social media has influenced people of all age groups. You can write topics like making the transition from regular communication tools to social media for the older age group. You can also explore the primary differences between the digital generation and the older generation. These subjects give you a lot more material for research and writing.  You should also ensure you have a piece of firsthand information on social media platforms that can serve as your case studies.

Make sure that you try to answer questions that you personally have about social media and its impact on the world. Choosing a Social Media Marketing Research Paper Topic

Choosing a social media marketing research paper topic can be a challenging task, especially with the vast array of topics available. However, by following these expert tips, you can choose a topic that is both interesting and relevant to the field:

Choose a relevant and current topic

One of the most important things to consider when choosing from a multitude of social media marketing research paper topics is relevance. You want to choose a topic that is both timely and relevant to the current state of social media marketing. Look for topics that are currently trending, or have recently emerged as important issues in the field.

For example, a current trend in social media marketing is the use of micro-influencers. Micro-influencers are individuals with smaller followings on social media, but with high engagement rates. Choosing a topic related to micro-influencers would be both relevant and timely.

Another way to find relevant topics is to look at current events and news stories. For example, the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018 brought attention to the issue of data privacy in social media marketing. A research paper on this topic would be both relevant and important in today’s digital landscape.

Choose a unique angle

While it is important to choose a topic that is relevant, it is also important to find a unique angle. Look for topics that have not been extensively covered in existing literature, or that offer a different perspective on a well-covered topic.

For example, if you choose to research the effectiveness of social media advertising, you might want to focus on a specific aspect of social media advertising that has not been extensively researched. Alternatively, you could take a unique angle on a well-covered topic, such as the impact of social media advertising on body image.

By choosing a unique angle, you can add value to the existing literature and contribute to the ongoing discourse in the field.

Use a variety of sources

To write a well-rounded research paper, it is important to use a variety of sources. This can include academic journals, industry reports, news articles, and social media posts.

Academic journals are a great source for in-depth research and theoretical frameworks. Industry reports can provide valuable insights into current trends and practices in social media marketing. News articles can be used to contextualize your research and provide real-world examples. Social media posts can be a valuable source of qualitative data and consumer insights.

By using a variety of sources, you can ensure that your research is well-rounded and provides a comprehensive view of the topic.

Narrow down your topic

Once you have identified a broad topic, it is important to narrow it down to a specific research question. This will help focus your research and ensure that your paper is well-structured.

For example, if you choose to research the impact of social media on consumer behavior, you might want to narrow your topic down to a specific aspect of consumer behavior, such as the impact of social media on purchase intention.

By narrowing down your topic, you can ensure that your research is focused and well-structured, and that you can provide in-depth analysis on a specific aspect of the topic.

Consider the scope of the project

Before choosing a topic, consider the scope of the project. Make sure that the topic is feasible within the timeframe and resources available.

Consider the length of the research paper and the time available for research and writing. Ensure that the topic is feasible within these constraints. Additionally, consider the availability of data and resources for the topic. If there is limited data available on a specific topic, it may be difficult to provide in-depth analysis.

By considering the scope of the project, you can ensure that your research paper is feasible and that you can provide high-quality analysis within the given constraints.

Consult with your instructor or advisor

When in doubt, consult with your instructor or advisor. They can provide guidance on choosing a topic that is relevant and feasible within the context of the course or program.

Additionally, they can provide valuable insights into the current discourse in the field and suggest potential sources or research questions.

Use social media platforms as a resource

Social media platforms can be a valuable resource for finding research paper topics. Follow thought leaders and experts in the field on platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn. Look for conversations and debates in the field and identify gaps in the literature that could be addressed through research.

By using social media platforms as a resource, you can stay up-to-date on the latest trends and conversations in the field and identify potential research paper topics.

Consider your personal interests

Finally, consider your personal interests when choosing from different social media marketing research paper topics. Choosing a topic that you are passionate about can help motivate you throughout the research and writing process and ensure that you produce a high-quality paper.

For example, if you have a personal interest in the impact of social media on mental health, you could choose a research paper topic related to this area. By choosing a topic that aligns with your personal interests, you can ensure that the research process is enjoyable and fulfilling.

By following these expert tips, you can choose a social media marketing research paper topic that is both interesting and feasible to research. Remember to choose a relevant and current topic, find a unique angle, use a variety of sources, narrow down your topic, consider the scope of the project, consult with your instructor or advisor, use social media platforms as a resource, and consider your personal interests.

How to Write a Social Media Marketing Research Paper

Once you have chosen a social media marketing research paper topic, it is important to write a high-quality paper that provides valuable insights and contributes to the ongoing discourse in the field. Here are some tips to help you write a social media marketing research paper:

Develop a research question

The first step in writing a social media marketing research paper is to develop a research question. The research question should be specific, focused, and answerable through research.

For example, if your topic is the impact of social media on consumer behavior, your research question might be: How does social media influence purchase intention among millennials?

By developing a clear research question, you can ensure that your research is focused and well-structured.

Conduct a literature review

A literature review is an important step in any research paper. It involves reviewing existing literature on the topic and identifying gaps or areas for further research.

Conduct a literature review by reading academic journals, industry reports, news articles, and social media posts. Identify key themes and ideas that are relevant to your research question and use these to inform your analysis.

Collect and analyze data

Depending on your research question, you may need to collect and analyze data. This can involve conducting surveys, interviews, or analyzing social media data.

When collecting data, ensure that it is relevant to your research question and that it is collected ethically and with informed consent.

Once you have collected data, analyze it using appropriate statistical or qualitative methods. Use your analysis to support your research question and provide valuable insights into the topic.

Structure your paper

A well-structured research paper is essential to ensure that your research is communicated effectively. Use the following structure as a guide:

  • Introduction: Introduce your research question and provide background information on the topic.
  • Literature Review: Provide an overview of the existing literature on the topic and identify gaps or areas for further research.
  • Methodology: Describe the methods used to collect and analyze data.
  • Results: Present the results of your analysis and use them to answer your research question.
  • Discussion: Interpret your results and provide insights into the topic.
  • Conclusion: Summarize your findings and suggest areas for further research.

Use appropriate formatting and citation styles

It is important to use appropriate formatting and citation styles in your research paper. Use a style guide such as APA, MLA, or Chicago to ensure that your paper is formatted correctly.

Additionally, ensure that all sources are properly cited in your paper to avoid plagiarism and provide credit to the original authors.

By following these tips, you can write a high-quality social media marketing research paper that provides valuable insights and contributes to the ongoing discourse in the field.

Social media research topics

Using social networking platforms is not a new thread. It has existed for a few decades and will continue to exist for years to come. Without a doubt, it is possible to conclude that anyone reading this article is registered with a social media company for a chat, hookups, dates, connections, or any reason at all.

Analyzing why netizens use social networking platforms has never been a concluded issue. Individuals join social platforms to meet up with long-lost friends or find new ones. However, the not-so-popular reason for the use of social platforms is that people join to find answers.

Answers to virtually everything are constantly being looked up on social platforms. Researchers often conduct online polls, ask social network research questions, create social media research paper topics on social forums, and often combine social network and scientific research to answer statistical questions.

If you’re a researcher or just a curious chap who needs to find answers to academic research on social forums, you will find this article interesting. This post provides suggestions on the kind of social media research paper topics you need and how to get answers to them.

How to Select Social Media Research Topic

The first thing to put at the back of your mind when looking for social media research paper topics is that your topic must raise questions and curiosity in the readers’ hearts. If this factor is put into consideration, the following points would surely be of help.

Find the Right Sources

The problems with selecting research topics on social forums mainly lie in the quality of sources cited in the social network research papers. Most sites or links shared/referenced by authors are often littered with annoying ads and other spammed links.

Every author needs to know that readers do not need to scroll for minutes before getting the point of the paper. Limit the ambiguity in your paper too.

Use Frequently Asked Questions

It is worthy of note that the requirements of social forums research are pretty different from normal or professional ones. If social media platforms and scientific research should go hand in hand, the unwritten rules of both sections should be considered.

For example, a general rule on social platforms posts is to write something people are curious about. Incorporating that into an academic paper should be a fling. The answers to these curiosity questions should be subtly written in the body or any other part of the social media research paper topics.

Social Media Addiction Research Topics

Addiction to social media platforms is not news. Up to 70% of young folks are unintentionally addicted to a social networking app or the other. Hence, the need for researchers to study the trend of addiction in their contemporary world.

The following are lists of some social media research paper topics that address social platform addiction in young adults.

Ethical Issues in Social Media Research Topics

An increasingly popular research tool for most young people is the mass media websites. The popularity in use, however, does not address the ethical issues being raised.

Some of these issues are highlighted below;

Social media has always been a ‘no man’s land.’ It’s like eating a plate of sausage in seagulls’ territory. Almost everyone is trying to creep into your little niche, using your information and even stealing your account.

These big issue doesn’t exclude most researchers. It has been reiterated in many countries that researchers, especially public health workers, should be provided with sets of guidelines that will help them conduct their researches without breaking ethical principles.

Authenticity

Proofing the originality of statistics, results, questionnaires, or information generally gotten from social media websites is difficult.

For example, if social media elections are done, it often doesn’t come out the same as those conducted in real life.

Social media users are usually influenced by many things, including online incentives, social media pressure, and the absence of privacy. Therefore, the information provided as the basis of the research is not always entirely authentic.

No matter how you set your social networks application, it remains traceable. Just editing or changing a post even leaves a post edit history.

The challenge poses a considerable problem to researchers. For public health researchers, individuals find it difficult to release information concerning their health because they know how difficult it is to remain anonymous after supplying such information.

At the same time, the ease of creating and deleting mass media accounts has also raised numerous questions. Many hateful and bitter people, to vent anger, create social network accounts with different names to brandish fascist slurs and online bullying.

Apart from the savage attacks on social networks, these false accounts can significantly impact percentage calculation and information gathering for research on mass media.

Having addressed essential points related to research questions about mass media and social networking platforms, the following are some social media research paper topics about essential spheres that you will find helpful.

Paid vs. Owned vs. Earned Media: What's the Difference?

A business professional using a laptop with digital marketing icons floating above it

  • 15 Feb 2024

Digital marketing can be a key driver of business success. Beyond a well-defined, measurable strategy, excelling at it requires using three media types: earned, paid, and owned.

Each type can give you insight into how customers learn, interact, and communicate with your brand. As a result, it’s crucial to employ a balanced media strategy. According to a survey by public relations software company Cision , marketers spend approximately 24 percent of their digital marketing budgets on earned media, 25 percent on paid media, and 32 percent on owned media.

If you want to help your organization engage and retain customers, here’s an overview of paid, owned, and earned media and how to incorporate each into your digital marketing plan .

Access your free e-book today.

What Is Paid Media?

Paid media is any marketing effort that involves paying to display promotional content across social media, search engines, or websites. According to the online course Digital Marketing Strategy , paid media comprises two categories: paid search and display advertising.

  • Paid search: Ads that appear in response to consumers actively searching for your products, services, or brand
  • Display ads: Ads shown to consumers who might be interested in your products or services but aren’t actively searching for them

Using these approaches, you can better reach your target audience , improve conversion rates, and maximize your digital marketing budget’s efficiency.

Among the content you can use to engage customers, paid video social ads can be highly effective.

According to Digital Marketing Strategy , that’s because:

  • Technology has become more accessible.
  • Consumers spend more time watching videos.

“This has led platforms like Instagram and Facebook to focus more on video,” says HBS Professor Sunil Gupta, who teaches the course. “It’s also allowed newer video-based platforms like TikTok to gain significant momentum.”

Data reinforces that point. According to Google , paid YouTube mobile advertising is 84 percent more likely to receive viewers’ attention than traditional TV advertising.

What Is Owned Media?

Owned media is digital content your company creates, including its website, blog, emails, and social media posts. Its goal is to increase brand awareness outside of paid efforts.

“One of the primary goals of owned media strategy is to improve the odds that your site shows up at or near the top of the organic links shown by search engines like Google,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy . “Being on the first page of results makes it more likely for someone to click on your link—and being at the top of the first page increases the likelihood even more.”

You can improve your site’s ranking by applying search engine optimization best practices, incorporating valuable keywords in content, and improving the user experience.

In Digital Marketing Strategy , Kate Laliberte, head of e-commerce at footwear company OOFOS, shares her team’s owned media approach.

“For us, owned media is focusing on our organic search, organic social, and email, but you can extend it as well,” Laliberte says. “Our website, the blog postings we have on our website, some of the direct mail pieces that we’re just getting into–that’s our owned media as well. So we really have control of that media. We have control of the placement, who we’re targeting, and what the story we’re telling them is.”

What Is Earned Media?

Earned media is public exposure through word of mouth, customer reviews, social media mentions, or media coverage resulting from your content or services’ quality and relevancy.

“Unlike paid and owned media, earned media originates organically outside the company,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy . “In other words, this is media that’s neither paid for by a company nor owned by it. Instead, it’s media that a company has ‘earned’ from its consumers.”

Earned media has exploded with the rise of social media and review-based websites that give customers free platforms to share their opinions and ratings.

“Digital technology allows consumers to actively engage with firms and each other,” Gupta says in the course. “This has made owned and earned media key aspects of digital marketing.”

Earned media is also effective because consumers often trust personal recommendations versus advertisements. According to Nielsen’s Trust in Advertising survey , 88 percent of respondents said they most trust recommendations from people they know.

As such, earned media can help amplify your brand’s messaging and credibility at no cost.

What’s the Difference Between Earned, Owned, and Paid Media?

Control is a key differentiator between earned, owned, and paid media.

“In general, owned media provides a company greater control over the content that its consumers encounter and how they interact with the brand,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy .

Paid media offers a similar level of control, but it's limited by how much you spend on paid ads.

A high level of control in paid and owned media is vital because it allows you to establish your brand’s unique tone, look, and feel—which is particularly important considering the rise of earned media channels.

“Brands no longer have complete control over their message,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy . “Consumers have the liberty to share their views about brands on social media, and these positive or negative views can get amplified and even go viral.”

That doesn’t mean earned media can’t be effective for your digital marketing strategy. It still lends authenticity and credibility to your brand through unbiased customer endorsements.

Cost is crucial to consider when comparing media types.

For instance, paid media often gets a bad rap for its significant financial investment. However, all three media types come at a cost—even earned media.

For example, while your customers create earned media, content like influencer partnerships can be costly. According to a report by social media monitoring company Meltwater , more than 11 percent of marketers spend over $500,000 on influencer marketing, while 22 percent spend between $10,000 and $50,000.

Owned media has financial considerations, too. For one, it’s often limited by your company’s time and resources. It also requires an initial financial commitment to produce content that engages your target audience, which can be work-intensive and slow to generate a return. However, when done right, it can reap similar benefits as paid advertisements.

Impact is another differentiator among the three media types. It refers to how your content effectively reaches, engages, and influences your target customers and drives them to convert.

Each type has a different level of impact throughout the marketing funnel’s three customer stages:

  • Awareness: Introducing potential customers to your brand or product to address a problem they may have
  • Consideration: Making customers aware of your brand or product while they evaluate it against alternatives
  • Decision: Influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions using information you gather during the previous stages

A graphic showing the three marketing funnel stages: awareness, consideration, and decision.

For example, paid media is useful for boosting brand awareness at the top of the funnel. It can acquire potential customers quickly and ensure you get a lot of visibility.

Earned media makes a bigger impact further down the funnel since personal recommendations can be the deciding factor in customers’ purchasing decisions.

Owned media is a little different.

“When it comes to the marketing funnel stage, owned media can work at all stages of the funnel,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy . “As a top-of-the-funnel tactic, it can help brand discovery through organic search. At the mid- to lower-stages of the funnel, it can improve conversion by providing consumers with relevant, persuasive, and informative content.”

Take Control of Your Digital Marketing Strategy

When comparing earned versus paid versus owned media, remember: Your digital marketing strategy shouldn’t solely focus on just one.

“These three types of media often have synergy,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy . “For example, when a company discovers someone promoting their products for free and decides to enlist them as a paid influencer, a combination of earned and paid media is at work.”

By taking an online marketing course, such as Digital Marketing Strategy , you can learn how to balance these media types in your digital marketing plan. Through real-world cases and an interactive, online learning experience, you can discover approaches for achieving your short- and long-term marketing goals.

Driving change: a case study of a dnp leader in residence program in a gerontological center of excellence.

View as pdf A later version of this article appeared in Nurse Leader , Volume 21, Issue 6 , December 2023 .

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) published the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice Nursing in 2004 identifying the essential curriculum needed for preparing advanced practice nurse leaders to effectively assess organizations, identify systemic issues, and facilitate organizational changes. 1 In 2021, AACN updated the curriculum by issuing The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education to guide the development of competency-based education for nursing students. 1 In addition to AACN’s competency-based approach to curriculum, in 2015 the American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) released Nurse Leader Core Competencies (updated in 2023) to help provide a competency based model to follow in developing nurse leaders. 2

Despite AACN and AONL competency-based curriculum and model, it is still common for nurse leaders to be promoted to management positions based solely on their work experience or exceptional clinical skills, rather than demonstration of management and leadership competencies. 3 The importance of identifying, training, and assessing executive leaders through formal leadership development programs, within supportive organizational cultures has been discussed by national leaders. As well as the need for nurturing emerging leaders through fostering interprofessional collaboration, mentorship, and continuous development of leadership skills has been identified. 4 As Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) nurse leaders assume executive roles within healthcare organizations, they play a vital role within complex systems. Demonstration of leadership competence and participation in formal leadership development programs has become imperative for their success. However, models of competency-based executive leadership development programs can be hard to find, particularly programs outside of health care systems.

The implementation of a DNP Leader in Residence program, such as the one designed for The Barbara and Richard Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence, addresses many of the challenges facing new DNP leaders and ensures mastery of executive leadership competencies and readiness to practice through exposure to varied experiences and close mentoring. The Csomay Center , based at The University of Iowa, was established in 2000 as one of the five original Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in the country. Later funding by the Csomay family established an endowment that supports the Center's ongoing work. The current Csomay Center strategic plan and mission aims to develop future healthcare leaders while promoting optimal aging and quality of life for older adults. The Csomay Center Director created the innovative DNP Leader in Residence program to foster the growth of future nurse leaders in non-healthcare systems. The purpose of this paper is to present a case study of the development and implementation of the Leader in Residence program, followed by suggested evaluation strategies, and discussion of future innovation of leadership opportunities in non-traditional health care settings.

Development of the DNP Leader in Residence Program

The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle has garnered substantial recognition as a valuable tool for fostering development and driving improvement initiatives. 5 The PDSA cycle can function as an independent methodology and as an integral component of broader quality enhancement approaches with notable efficacy in its ability to facilitate the rapid creation, testing, and evaluation of transformative interventions within healthcare. 6 Consequently, the PDSA cycle model was deemed fitting to guide the development and implementation of the DNP Leader in Residence Program at the Csomay Center.

PDSA Cycle: Plan

Existing resources. The DNP Health Systems: Administration/Executive Leadership Program offered by the University of Iowa is comprised of comprehensive nursing administration and leadership curriculum, led by distinguished faculty composed of national leaders in the realms of innovation, health policy, leadership, clinical education, and evidence-based practice. The curriculum is designed to cultivate the next generation of nursing executive leaders, with emphasis on personalized career planning and tailored practicum placements. The DNP Health Systems: Administration/Executive Leadership curriculum includes a range of courses focused on leadership and management with diverse topics such as policy an law, infrastructure and informatics, finance and economics, marketing and communication, quality and safety, evidence-based practice, and social determinants of health. The curriculum is complemented by an extensive practicum component and culminates in a DNP project with additional hours of practicum.

New program. The DNP Leader in Residence program at the Csomay Center is designed to encompass communication and relationship building, systems thinking, change management, transformation and innovation, knowledge of clinical principles in the community, professionalism, and business skills including financial, strategic, and human resource management. The program fully immerses students in the objectives of the DNP Health Systems: Administration/Executive Leadership curriculum and enables them to progressively demonstrate competencies outlined by AONL. The Leader in Residence program also includes career development coaching, reflective practice, and personal and professional accountability. The program is integrated throughout the entire duration of the Leader in Residence’s coursework, fulfilling the required practicum hours for both the DNP coursework and DNP project.

The DNP Leader in Residence program begins with the first semester of practicum being focused on completing an onboarding process to the Center including understanding the center's strategic plan, mission, vision, and history. Onboarding for the Leader in Residence provides access to all relevant Center information and resources and integration into the leadership team, community partnerships, and other University of Iowa College of Nursing Centers associated with the Csomay Center. During this first semester, observation and identification of the Csomay Center Director's various roles including being a leader, manager, innovator, socializer, and mentor is facilitated. In collaboration with the Center Director (a faculty position) and Center Coordinator (a staff position), specific competencies to be measured and mastered along with learning opportunities desired throughout the program are established to ensure a well-planned and thorough immersion experience.

Following the initial semester of practicum, the Leader in Residence has weekly check-ins with the Center Director and Center Coordinator to continue to identify learning opportunities and progression through executive leadership competencies to enrich the experience. The Leader in Residence also undertakes an administrative project for the Center this semester, while concurrently continuing observations of the Center Director's activities in local, regional, and national executive leadership settings. The student has ongoing participation and advancement in executive leadership roles and activities throughout the practicum, creating a well-prepared future nurse executive leader.

After completing practicum hours related to the Health Systems: Administration/Executive Leadership coursework, the Leader in Residence engages in dedicated residency hours to continue to experience domains within nursing leadership competencies like communication, professionalism, and relationship building. During residency hours, time is spent with the completion of a small quality improvement project for the Csomay Center, along with any other administrative projects identified by the Center Director and Center Coordinator. The Leader in Residence is fully integrated into the Csomay Center's Leadership Team during this phase, assisting the Center Coordinator in creating agendas and leading meetings. Additional participation includes active involvement in community engagement activities and presenting at or attending a national conference as a representative of the Csomay Center. The Leader in Residence must mentor a master’s in nursing student during the final year of the DNP Residency.

Implementation of the DNP Leader in Residence Program

PDSA Cycle: Do

Immersive experience. In this case study, the DNP Leader in Residence was fully immersed in a wide range of center activities, providing valuable opportunities to engage in administrative projects and observe executive leadership roles and skills during practicum hours spent at the Csomay Center. Throughout the program, the Leader in Residence observed and learned from multidisciplinary leaders at the national, regional, and university levels who engaged with the Center. By shadowing the Csomay Center Director, the Leader in Residence had the opportunity to observe executive leadership objectives such as fostering innovation, facilitating multidisciplinary collaboration, and nurturing meaningful relationships. The immersive experience within the center’s activities also allowed the Leader in Residence to gain a deep understanding of crucial facets such as philanthropy and community engagement. Active involvement in administrative processes such as strategic planning, budgeting, human resources management, and the development of standard operating procedures provided valuable exposure to strategies that are needed to be an effective nurse leader in the future.

Active participation. The DNP Leader in Residence also played a key role in advancing specific actions outlined in the center's strategic plan during the program including: 1) the creation of a membership structure for the Csomay Center and 2) successfully completing a state Board of Regents application for official recognition as a distinguished center. The Csomay Center sponsored membership for the Leader in Residence in the Midwest Nurse Research Society (MNRS), which opened doors to attend the annual MNRS conference and engage with regional nursing leadership, while fostering socialization, promotion of the Csomay Center and Leader in Residence program, and observation of current nursing research. Furthermore, the Leader in Residence participated in the strategic planning committee and engagement subcommittee for MNRS, collaborating directly with the MNRS president. Additional active participation by the Leader in Residence included attendance in planning sessions and completion of the annual report for GeriatricPain.org , an initiative falling under the umbrella of the Csomay Center. Finally, the Leader in Residence was involved in archiving research and curriculum for distinguished nursing leader and researcher, Dr. Kitty Buckwalter, for the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging, the University of Pennsylvania Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, and the University of Iowa library archives.

Suggested Evaluation Strategies of the DNP Leader in Residence Program

PDSA Cycle: Study

Assessment and benchmarking. To effectively assess the outcomes and success of the DNP Leader in Residence Program, a comprehensive evaluation framework should be used throughout the program. Key measures should include the collection and review of executive leadership opportunities experienced, leadership roles observed, and competencies mastered. The Leader in Residence is responsible for maintaining detailed logs of their participation in center activities and initiatives on a semester basis. These logs serve to track the progression of mastery of AONL competencies by benchmarking activities and identifying areas for future growth for the Leader in Residence.

Evaluation. In addition to assessment and benchmarking, evaluations need to be completed by Csomay Center stakeholders (leadership, staff, and community partners involved) and the individual Leader in Residence both during and upon completion of the program. Feedback from stakeholders will identify the contributions made by the Leader in Residence and provide valuable insights into their growth. Self-reflection on experiences by the individual Leader in Residence throughout the program will serve as an important measure of personal successes and identify gaps in the program. Factors such as career advancement during the program, application of curriculum objectives in the workplace, and prospects for future career progression for the Leader in Residence should be considered as additional indicators of the success of the program.

The evaluation should also encompass a thorough review of the opportunities experienced during the residency, with the aim of identifying areas for potential expansion and enrichment of the DNP Leader in Residence program. By carefully examining the logs, reflecting on the acquired executive leadership competencies, and studying stakeholder evaluations, additional experiences and opportunities can be identified to further enhance the program's efficacy. The evaluation process should be utilized to identify specific executive leadership competencies that require further immersion and exploration throughout the program.

Future Innovation of DNP Leader in Residence Programs in Non-traditional Healthcare Settings

PDSA Cycle: Act

As subsequent residents complete the program and their experiences are thoroughly evaluated, it is essential to identify new opportunities for DNP Leader in Residence programs to be implemented in other non-health care system settings. When feasible, expansion into clinical healthcare settings, including long-term care and acute care environments, should be pursued. By leveraging the insights gained from previous Leaders in Residence and their respective experiences, the program can be refined to better align with desired outcomes and competencies. These expansions will broaden the scope and impact of the program and provide a wider array of experiences and challenges for future Leaders in Residency to navigate, enriching their development as dynamic nurse executive leaders within diverse healthcare landscapes.

This case study presented a comprehensive overview of the development and implementation of the DNP Leader in Residence program developed by the Barbara and Richard Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence. The Leader in Residence program provided a transformative experience by integrating key curriculum objectives, competency-based learning, and mentorship by esteemed nursing leaders and researchers through successful integration into the Center. With ongoing innovation and application of the PDSA cycle, the DNP Leader in Residence program presented in this case study holds immense potential to help better prepare 21 st century nurse leaders capable of driving positive change within complex healthcare systems.

On Feb. 16, Yale University marked a milestone in its comprehensive, long-term examination of the university’s historical role in and associations with slavery, publishing a related peer-reviewed book and announcing several new commitments and actions in response to its findings.

The book, “Yale and Slavery: A History,” which is available in a free digital version , was authored by Yale Professor David W. Blight with the Yale and Slavery Research Project, a group convened in 2020 to better understand the university’s history — specifically its formative ties to slavery and the slave trade. The group included faculty, staff, students, and New Haven community members.

To mark the occasion, Yale also hosted a campus event, broadcast via livestream, in which members of the university and New Haven communities highlighted the research project’s findings and Yale’s new commitments to create a stronger community. See photo slideshow above and watch a recording of the full event .

The findings of the Yale and Slavery Research project, Salovey said Friday, “provide a deeper, more honest understanding of who we are and how we got here.

“ The efforts of the team give us a necessary foundation from which to build a stronger, more knowledgeable and more vibrant university — indeed a more vibrant society.”

Other speakers included Kimberly Goff-Crews, the university secretary and vice president for university life; Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale; and project member Charles Warner, chairman of the Connecticut Freedom Trail, member of the Amistad Committee Inc. Board of Directors, and chairman of the Dixwell Congregational Church History Committee.
