I was not completely satisfied with the quality and I was not advised that the art would not be signed as they were by the original artist. They are obviously copies that any idiot could understand, but I wanted the paintings to be complete copies including the signature

I have used 1st Gallery twice, and their work could not be better each time. The work is high quality, but I am very picky, so I send back detailed corrections and criticisms. Because I am using words to describe shapes and colors, this is not easy to interpret. However, all of my changes have been quickly understood and done. I don't know how they do it. It is also clear that the copies they make are artworks in themselves.

Excellent service, very happy with my painting a perfect reproduction of a Van Gogh. I have always wanted to own one and 1st Art Gallery finally made it happen! Delivery experience

The product is beautiful, and it was delivered within the time frame. I was warned their emails might go to my spam folder, so I looked for them there. Unfortunately they went to my promotions folder so I had no idea about the progress of the painting until it was almost delivered.

Very happy with my personalized reproduction

I purchased a oil painting on the 1st Art Gallery site for approximately $400. It was a reproduction of a late 18th century work that I wanted slightly modified. After showing them the modified image, they were able to paint everything to my specifications. It took a few revisions, but I am very pleased with the result. I will be a repeat customer!

You get what you pay for

I ordered, and just received a hand-painted copy of the Renoir painting "Little Irene." I've long admired this painting and when I stumbled upon 1st Art Gallery I decided to take a chance. An actual panting in oils seemed more appealing than a print, even a giclée. I specifically requested that the artist who painted my copy should sign his or her name to it. The painting I received is nice. It is not "museum quality" as promised on the website. And it is not signed. It bears a fair resemblance to the original, but the colors are not quite right and in the facial features and expression it is nothing like it. The girl in my painting could be the sister of Little Irene, but is most definitely not Irene herself. Still, for $312.99 I got what I paid for. It was silly of me to expect better. I own some original oil paintings and some giclées, but I had never bought a hand-painted copy before and didn't know what to expect. I was surprised that the painting was shipped from China. The web site says that all their paintings are painted in their studio, and shows a picture of the building, but does not say where that studio is. Somehow, China never occurred to me. If you just want a photo of your niece and her puppy turned into an oil painting, I imagine 1st Art Gallery could do a perfectly serviceable job of it. If you want a copy of one of the Great Masters, don't expect it to capture the subtleties of the original. To repeat, I paid $312.99 and I got a $312.99 painting. I have not yet decided if it deserves a place on my wall.

Chance discovery and wasn't disappointed !

The painting corresponds exactly to my expectations and looks great. Small requests were also implemented in retrospect after the sending a photo of the preliminary result without a grumbling. The painting was delivered rolled and was very carefully packed. The announced delivery time was exceeded by 4 weeks ( during the New Years everything is at a standstill in the painters's country of origin). Overall, I am very satisfied and I can confirm that 1st art-gallery is trustworthy. Still I can't give full marks because the result wasn't perfect from the start, details have been forgotten und the corrections were necessary. I would particularly like to emphasize the pleasant cooperation with the team from 1st art-gallery, especially with Katerina. She always showed a reliable, efficient way of working and tireless commitment.

Definitely trustworthy!

I've ordered eight paintings from them and all but one have been great. Two were pretty difficult and I was impressed with their ability to capture detail. I've noticed they do a bit better with paintings of people than animals, but that's just been my experience. I was given a full refund for the one painting that wasn't good. While it was disappointing to not have that painting, they were quick to resolve the issue. They also have very good customer service and communication. You will get an email with an image of the reproduction before they mail it. You should feel very comfortable ordering from them.

So far, so good . . .

First experience started out well but definitely ran into a glitch, which this company did remedy. The Customer Service rep, Natasha, was very helpful and made corrections as requested. I also used Canvasreplicas.com and my experience was terrible! The biggest difference between these two is that this seller allows proofing and corrections BEFORE mailing artworks. Canvasreplicas.com mails the art and you get stuck having to return the art at your own cost and having to pay re-stocking fees.

Horrible! "Let’s talk about ‘stupidity’. I have purchased paintings from 1st Art Gallery over the past 5 years, which have all been good replicas of the originals. My last purchase wasn’t even close to the original, so of course I would return it, expecting a full refund. I couldn’t even believe they sent me such a horrible painting. I sent them an email explaining this, and their response was: 1. I can keep the painting and they will credit me $100.00… which doesn’t make any sense. Why would I keep it? 2. I can mail the painting back for them to try to fix it… which is unacceptable. You can’t ‘touch-up’ such a disastrous painting. 3. I can pay out of my own pocket to return the painting to them, and they will then deduct an additional $45.00 from my purchase amount to cover ‘their shipping costs’? Shipping was free! And why would I pay for their mistake? Also, per their website, they state: 365 Day Money Back Guarantee. I gave them the option of having someone repaint the painting and I will destroy the one they sent, or send me a return shipping label and I will return it back to them. They never responded. I had to dispute the charge with my credit card company, to which they agreed about the issue. They informed me that they’ve credited the charge and it will remain permanent. Oh, THEN 1st Art Gallery started making excuses as to why the painting didn’t come out as it should have. Too late for that! I have since purchased this painting from another site and it came out beautifully. Back to the ‘stupidity’. How stupid was it to lose a loyal customer over this?? ** UPDATE: I just received a response, years later, stating they send emails of the paintings for review before shipping. As they are aware, they never sent me an email for review of this disaster. If they did, it would have never been accepted. So, in addition to the stupidity, they are now lying. Wow!

Flandrin's portrait of Napoleon 111 has been a favourite portrait of mine,for many years,since I first saw it in Paris.I was amazed and delighted by the quality of the reproduction received from 1st Art Reproductions.The artist who painted the reproduction achieved,not only,verisimilitude with the original,but also successfully reproduced the penetrating psychological nature of the portrait capturing the distant and inscrutable look of the subject. Second Time Is A Charm

I ordered a painting by the artist-Edward Ladell, that was not listed on the 1st Gallery website, so it became a custom order to reproduce. I provided the image to 1st Gallery and their artist did a beautiful job recreating it. In some respects the reproduction was more beautiful than the original. When I received the proof I requested some fine-tuning on making the outline of some of the flowers crisper and to add a touch more red to the peach. 1st Gallery was more than happy to accommodate my requests. Ultimately, what I received was a gorgeous painting more spectacular than the original. This is my second positive experience with 1st Gallery and I couldn't be more happy. Thank you 1st Gallery!

Be very careful with this company

Be very careful with this company. You have to read the "100% Satisfaction" page and the "Returns Policy" page. The "Returns Policy" is only part of their rules. They will not refund if you don't like the work from the photograph of the painting. They will refuse. The photograph I received showed the painting to be crude in execution. (Updated 5/9/22 -- As the work was so badly done, I had no confidence in necessary improvements; plus I asks for a refund which was refused. The painting was never shipped, but the company lied to my credit card company, saying it was shipped, and I HAD received it. So, they blocked me getting a refund through my credit card. CAUTION)

I recently had an oil painting done by 1st Art Gallery. The results were magnificent. It looks like a museum piece. I worried it may be cartoonish looking, but instead, it was exquisite. The rich colors and details were all there. It looks better than a similar painting in a museum that I visit.

Sceptical at first, I am really happy with the outcome!

After being stunned by the beauty of a painting while on a trip in Germany, I started searching the web for a way to get a reproduction at an affordable price. I quickly came across 1st art gallery. I try my best to check reviews of different businesses when I give them my money, and honestly it was weird to see how positive the reviews for 1st art gallery were, they seemed almost too good to be true. I was really looking for anything negative that would make me reconsider, but honestly I could not find anything alarming at all. After all that research, I decided to give them a try. After around 2 weeks (it was a complex painting) I had a first draft to view! An important tip, try to be as careful and precise when sending instructions to the painter if you want any changes. The artists are not native speakers most likely, so there is a communication layer through the representatives. However, they went ahead with any additions I had with patience. Eventually, I was really happy with the product and asked for it to be shipped. Any issues that came up with shipping were dealt with by 1st art very professionally, many thanks to them. The painting arrived, I had it professionally framed and the workers said that it was skillfully painted. I really don't see any shortcuts in the painting process, it's fully painted by hand. I overlayed the original painting with the replica using photoshop and I have to say that whilst the shapes are very close, the proportions are a bit off (I think this means that it was truly done by hand and not copied using and machines or anything). It's not a perfect copy, but in my case we're talking about an extremely detailed work of art painted by an absolute master, and a copy that in my opinion was super affordable to the average person. Objectively speaking, that is amazing! I give 1st art 5 stars, not just for actually delivering a skillfully painted piece of art that now hangs over my dinner table, but also for their committment to absolute professionalism in a time where we kind of need to be careful when dealing with companies, especially ones located in another country and when spending larger sums of money. They have my utmost respect and thanks.

Service matches the beauty

This wasn't the first time we've ordered from 1st Art Gallery. We've always loved the quality of their reproductions. Being able to see the individual strokes and even touch the paint is a sensory thrill you can never get from a simple print. So we were excited as we waited for delivery of our latest. And waited. And waited. Finally, the shipping company conceded: They had lost it. We reached out to Katerina, providing all the details we could, expecting that she would need more while we waited for a new painting. But no. We got an immediate response. The job would be expedited while they worked out what had happened (and, I trust, were compensated) by the shipping company. Our replacement arrived at a speed not even Santa Claus could match. While I said this wasn't our first order, it was the first time we had cause to test the level of customer service. I'm pleased to share that it matches the beauty of the product.

That the painting looked authentic

That the painting looked authentic. I've had several of these over the years from the retail level and always been very impressed with the artists work. I have a Vermeer in an identical museum quality frame, and it looks just like the original and have enjoyed Renoir, Van Gogh. So, they're copies. Very good copies by young and not so young apprentice painters. Very good work.

I tried a different company before 1st Art Gallery and wanted to compare the two. There is a big difference as 1st art gallery's replica was practically identical. The main difference is not in the broader brush strokes but in the details. 1st Art Gallery paid a lot of attention to that whereas the other company's replica seemed rushed when looking from close up. I will use their services again definitely.

Great Experience. Great Quality.

Heartwarming portrait

Review: On September **,2013 I ordered a painting from 1st Art Gallery Inc from their online website and paid $189.88. The painting is titled "[redacted]," a reproduction of the original from the artist [redacted]. I received the painting November **, 2013 and noticed a number of obvious paint runs in various locations on the painting. I immediately contacted the company and they informed me I needed to take pictures of the errors in question and send them in an email. I did this more than once and they said these paint runs were normal and I disagreed because the original painting did not have these obscene paint runs. I insisted they fix this and according to their policy, if the painting had errors on it, they would pay for the return shipping and fix the problems at their cost. They also said it would only cost about $30.00 to ship it back. Turns out I have to ship this item to China at a cost of nearly a $100.00. Shortly after that, they sent me an email saying not to ship it back and that they would paint me a new one. Then I received an email from another rep from their company saying there were no errors and they were not going to paint a new one. I sent more detailed photos showing the obvious paint runs and blotches and after a few more email exchanges they again agreed to paint me a new painting. Then in the last email they tried to convince me again that I was wrong and insisted that I pay for $30 shipping on a new painting. The customer service reps at this company have been very difficult to work with and have continued to argue with me for over two weeks on this issue. Twice they said they would send me a new painting and then retracted with an excuse saying that I was wrong about paint runs. Their policy states "Shipping charges will be refunded only if return is a result of our error". I find that they are not following up on this promise, or their 100% guarantee promise either.Desired Settlement: I would like to have a new painting done as they said they would do with no strings attached. Otherwise I would like a full refund without the expense of return shipping to China. I shouldn't have to spend $100.00 to return this painting to China with errors on it to get a refund of $189.88. I shouldn't have to pay to have it sent to China when the company is based out of New York and the cost to return ship is more than half the total cost of the painting.

Review: I requested a quote for the company to recreate a picture of myself as an oil painting but to change my clothing and background. I attached the picture of myself and some ideas for the changes that I wanted to make including an oil painting for inspiration. I received an email the next day from a man named [redacted] who said that he could not do what I asked, but that he could use the oil painting I attached and just exchange the woman's face for my own. As the woman in that painting was topless, I decided not to go ahead with that painting. The next day I submitted another quote request, this time requesting that he recreate another oil painting (one I did like) and replace her face with my own. The next day I received another email from [redacted] with a quote for $295. I agreed to that price and I paid for the painting up front. A few weeks later I am notified that the painting is ready for review and I am shocked to find that they had painted the topless woman painting and stuck my face on her. I have exchanged countless emails with [redacted] and due to some language barrier, he does not seem to understand what I am saying. He just keeps repeating that they do not give refunds for custom paintings. I can understand the policy, if they had actually painted the picture I ordered but they did not. I absolutely will not accept the painting they have made, and if you could see it you would know why. If someone other than [redacted] or [redacted] (I spoke with him once and he told me that he does not do customer service) wants to contact me, I have saved the emails and created a timeline of our conversations to better explain where the error occurred.Desired Settlement: I either want a complete refund or a completely different painting made. Business Response: Customer was told PRIOR to placing the order that it is not refundable / cancelable and they still wanted to proceed with the order. Review: I sent an email to this 1st-art-gallery asking for a bid on a painting to see if they could provide a price better than what they listed on their website. The painting can be found at this link: [redacted] The price for the 20x32" painting that I was interested in is listed at $271.69 on the site. I have a screen grab of the page as further verification. When I asked for the quote, I suggested that other sources I had dealt with had provided inferior reproductions and that I was coming to them because I understood that they would do things right ("museum quality" reproductions is what they promise on their site). The reply I received from "[redacted]" said, "If you want the best quality reproduction the total will be $640, shipping included, for Museum Quality (the best quality)". I asked why the price he quoted was so tremendously different from the price listed on the site. The answer I received was, "With your requirements we cannot paint it for less." I replied with the following: "I suppose I do not understand how our requirements are any different than anyone else’s. Museum quality is what is offered to all, with a reproduction as close as possible to the original, is that not correct?" I was then told that the company would not be able to do a painting for me, the offer was withdrawn, and I was told that [redacted] had been doing this for 10 years and he would rather not take the order from me. My "requirements" are nothing more than what is promised on the website to every client. I have apologized to [redacted] for whatever it is that I did to offend or frighten and asked for a simple explanation regarding the price discrepancy and for clarification regarding if they offer different levels of "museum quality" based on if one contacts them before commissioning a work instead of simply ordering from the site (the site certainly does not provide any details regarding these options --- if they are options). I have noticed that when individuals complain about the company [redacted] is very quick to reply on sites like ripoffreport and generally suggests that the individual is clearly a competitor. He then goes on to site the satisfied customers' experiences. If select clients get a different grade work, I can see how such positive comments could exist, but it is clear that the experience I have had at this point suggests that the complaints are not necessarily from "competitors" or even terribly unreasonable customers. I don't even know what I did wrong to have been given the cold shoulder by this individual. I just wanted to contract a painting, express confidence that they could do the job well/right, and understand why when I asked for better deal, I received a quote that was 135% above the advertised price.Desired Settlement: 1) I would like to have my questions answered instead of being rudely ignored. 2) I would like to still have the option of ordering a high quality "museum quality" reproduction for the price that is advertised. At this point it is not clear if what they sell on the site is what they advertise of if personal contact must first be made to get the "secret price list" associated with what is advertised. 3) If 1st-art gallery does provide various grades of reproductions at different rates I believe this should be made clear or at the very least, in private communication the representatives ([redacted]in this case) should openly acknowledge such options instead of simply telling a potential customer "I don't want to do business with you" for no apparent reason. In her new book Get the Picture, journalist Bianca Bosker explores why connecting with art sometimes feels harder than it has to be. Above, a visitor takes in paintings at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London in 2010.

When Bianca Bosker told people in the art world she'd be writing a tell-all about their confounding, exclusive ecosystem, "bad idea," they responded.

"They didn't come right out and threaten my safety or anything," she writes in Get the Picture , "My reputation, well-being, and livelihood as a journalist —that, however, was another story." Judging from the book's recent reviews , she need not worry too much.

Bosker's motivation for writing the book was partly frustration. "I didn't know how to have a meaningful experience of art and that bothered me," she tells me, "But also like I think the art fiends that I got to know, it's not just that they look at art differently. They behave sort of like they've accessed this trapdoor in their brains and I envied that."

Other journalists might have relied on research and interviews. Bosker went gonzo. She spent five years immersed in the New York art scene, working as a gallery assistant and helping artists in their studios. After getting a license to be a security guard with the state of New York, she got a guard job at the Guggenheim.

Bosker didn't necessarily set out to write a takedown of the art world, though the result is pretty much just that. She writes about the time a performance artist sat on her face. And recounts a conversation with a dealer who said her mere presence (he didn't like her clothes) was "lowering my coolness." It's unvarnished, awkward and eye-opening.

Borderline hostile

"Working at galleries, I became initiated into the way that the art world wields strategic snobbery to keep people out. And I think it's deliberate and I think it's unnecessary," says Bosker.

Take the wall texts you often see at art museums. While they might be well-intentioned, Bosker believes they're part of an over-emphasis on context .

"For the last 100 years or so, we've been told that what really matters about an artwork is the idea behind it." Bosker says that "art connoisseurs" were very interested in "where an artist went to school, who owns her work, what gallery had shown it, who he slept with" and was surprised by "how little [time they] actually spent discussing the work itself."

Of those wall labels, "I thought they were annoying, like borderline hostile ... they just drove me crazy."

At a recent visit to the Guggenheim, we saw one that included the phrase:

"...practice explores the liminal spaces of human consciousness..."

Bosker shudders. "If I had a dollar for every time someone in the art world used the word 'liminal,'" she laughs. One artist she worked with told her, "'Reading the wall labels is like you're trying to have a conversation with the artwork, but someone keeps interrupting.'"

As a museum guard, Bosker occasionally took the matter into her own hands.

"I would actually try and stand in front of the wall labels so that people wouldn't just fall back on the approved interpretations. They would challenge themselves and really wrestle with their own eye, which is so strong," she says.

Small galleries deliberately keep out the 'schmoes '

If museums make some people feel unwelcome, Bosker learned that small, contemporary art galleries can be even worse. One that we visited in downtown Manhattan was hard to find. That's typical, Bosker explains.

She says a lot of galleries "deliberately ... hide themselves from the general public ... I worked for someone who referred to general public as 'Joe Schmoes' and I think there are a lot of ways to keep out the schmoes, and where you put your gallery is a big one."

Now, to be fair, those galleries are in the business of selling art.

Rob Dimin, another gallery owner Bosker worked for, does not refer to the general public as "schmoes" but he does like that his new gallery is tucked away. It's on the second floor of a building with just a small plaque by the entrance.

Dimin's last gallery was a storefront. "You [were] more likely to get people that had no intention or idea about the art or really interested in the art, just maybe kind of stumbling in," he says, "There [were] moments when we were on the street level that people would come in and just have phone conversations on rainy days because it was an open space."

People walking into a gallery to get out of the rain aren't usually interested in buying art. But Dimin admits that the art world is "opaque" and he's glad Bosker is unmasking it. There are parts of it even he doesn't understand.

"Even as an art dealer, it sometimes is confusing," he says, "Like, why is X, Y and Z artists getting acquired by every museum and having these museum shows? What is challenging for a person like me who's been in this business for 10 years, I can only imagine a person not within the industry having more challenges."

How to have a meaningful experience with art

Intentionally confusing, elitist, cloistered. While Bosker's new book likens the art world to a "country club," she says her feelings about art itself haven't been diminished.

"Seeing artists in their studios agonize over the correct color blue, over ... the physics of making something stick, lay and stay, really convinced me that everything we need to have a meaningful experience with art is right in front of us," says Bosker.

"My philosophy had always been when I went to a museum ... a scorched earth approach to viewing. I was like, 'You have to see everything. That is how you get your money's worth.'" Bosker says "museum fatigue" is real and compares it to eating everything at an all you can eat buffet. "No wonder you feel a little ill at the end of it."

"If you find one work and you just spend your entire half hour, hour, hour and a half at that piece, you've done it. And I think that that can be oftentimes an even more meaningful experience."

"An artist that I spent time with encouraged me to, in front of an artwork, challenge yourself to notice five things. And those five things don't have to be grandiose, like: 'This is a commentary on masculinity in the Internet age.' It could just be, you know, like this yellow makes me want to touch it." Taking the time to notice those things will help viewers think about the choices an artist has made, Bosker believes.

"I think being around art ultimately helps us widen and expand our definition of what beauty is. And I think beauty ... is that moment when our mind jumps the curb. It can feel uncomfortable, but it also is something that draws us to it. ... It's something that all of us need more of in our life. And art can be the gateway to finding more of it. It doesn't have to happen with the traditionally beautiful artwork."

Get as close to the source as possible

"What we see when we go to a museum is not necessarily the best that culture has to offer. ... It's the result of many decisions by flawed human beings. And one way to get around that is to widen your horizons. ... Go to see art at art schools, go see art at the gallery in a garage and just kind of go close to the source."

This mural hangs near Pobre Pescador (Poor Fisherman), 1896, by Paul Gauguin—the notorious French painter of Tahitian scenes. Gauguin, “Tropical” argues, planted stereotypical images of the tropics in the minds of many—images of a peaceful paradise, endless summer, lazy natives, and free love. That last one, “free love,” is a grating contortion, coming from a man whose muse was his child bride. But instead of canceling Gauguin fully, “Tropical” positions his work as the problem so many tropical artists were working against. Eat Pray Love , the best-selling memoir Elizabeth Gilbert wrote about finding herself in Bali in the wake of a divorce, is included for similar reasons in a library of tropical literature presented as part of the show.

Many paintings here contend with the way pastoral imagery was entwined with various projects of colonialism, which used images of verdant land brimming with untapped resources as justifications for occupation. A group of these landscapes is hung on apparatuses designed by the Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi, an icon of tropical modernism who, for a museum she designed in São Paulo, placed paintings on clear vertical planks stuck in blocks of concrete. She wanted to arrange works not linearly, but in what she called “a marvelous entanglement.” On these devices, labels are placed behind the paintings rather than next to them, so walking about, you’re forced to delay categorizing the mixture of works into their respective regions. Instead, you’re left attending to their affinities—chief among them their jewel-toned palettes, with rusty oranges and royal blues extending from verdant emeralds.

Mostly, these works refute ideas of untouched lands full of lazy natives with scenes showing workers, bustling streetscapes, and active human beings. Vibrant street scenes by S. Sudjojono, a founder of Indonesian modernism, stand out: he insisted on the political power of painting, always reminding people that the medium was no master’s tool, since it began not in Europe, but rather Egypt.

The most provocative pastoral riff is by Semsar Siahaan, whose 9-foot version of Manet’s Olympia shows a nude blonde woman lounging in sunglasses and heels, sipping from a coconut decorated with flowers. In Siahaan’s rendition from 1987, dozens of locals surround her, flocking from the surrounding land to dote, point, or stare. A brown foot extends from under her bed, right next to her suitcase, as if the man who carried her luggage also offered himself as an ottoman. Another work by Siahaan is a suite of sculptures the Indonesian artist burned: they were first made by his teacher at the Bandung Art Academy, fusing traditional techniques with European ones. Siahaan protested this effort to “modernize” Indonesian art by setting the wooden works ablaze.

In addition to subversions of stereotypes, there’s a section dedicated to self-portraiture. Here and throughout, art historical icons are paired with under-recognized artists. An especially striking pairing includes a 1945 picture of Frida Kahlo in which the Mexican artist is embraced by a monkey: the pair of primates wears matching chartreuse hair ribbons. Kahlo’s painting is shown next to Patrick Ng Kah Onn’s 1958 self-portrait, wherein the Kuala Lumpur–born artist, a Chinese male, depicts himself as a Malay woman in a provocative meditation on identity, one rare for its time. The works rhyme visually, sharing browns and golds, and both artists stare straight-on, framed by their bushy eyebrows.

Another memorable moment of self-representation comes in the form of a filmed 1960s interview with Ni Pollok, an Indonesian dancer who was the muse—and later, wife—of the Belgian artist Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Marpès, who painted idyllic Balinese scenes with her dancing in the center. We see not his canvases but an interview with Pollok who, in a scene that sums up the show, is asked whether she considers Bali a tropical paradise. “No,” she replies. “I was just born here.”

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – We’re often being sold on the benefits of being better listeners. Yet in this polarized, service-averse nation, the Art of Listening — to each other, or to business customers — may be at a low ebb. For Volkswagen , a stubborn unwillingness to really hear what American customers were saying helped trigger a decades-long decline in sales and market share.

They’re listening now. And the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are happy results, with more evidence to come via the electric ID. Buzz van . More than most mid-cycle refreshes, the three-row Atlas and two-row Cross Sport show what happens when automakers truly listen to every customer complaint and media gripe, and choose comprehensive improvement over window dressing or excuse-making. For these good-value, big-box family SUVs — two areas that didn’t need fixing — decisive upgrades to a formerly Walmart interior, a reworked body, a stronger and more-efficient powertrain, and a big jump in standard features, give the Atlas siblings a healthy lift versus its multitude of two- and three-row rivals.

As a VW designed and engineered specifically for Americans, the Atlas already opened VW’s ears, like it or not, to screaming demand for roomier SUVs. Just a decade ago, passenger cars made up 91% of VW’s U.S. sales. Today, SUVs are capturing 83% of VW sales. That’s led by the Tennessee-built Atlas, which (including the slope-roofed Cross Sport) has found nearly 500,000 buyers since its introduction as a 2018 model, and generates the most brand profits.

True to family-SUV form, we set off from a glamping site of Airstream trailers in New York’s rustic-chic Catskills Mountains at the thick-gripped wheel of an Atlas SEL Premium R-Line, which runs $53,085 (including $1,350 destination). That’s top dog in a lineup that starts from $38,065 for a Cross Sport SE, or $38,965 with 4Motion AWD. Right away, these Atlases felt more deserving of a monthly payment, ditching groan-worthy pebbled plastic for handsome soft-touch materials and new color palettes, seat trims and decors that flow from the doors through the dash: “Precious Walnut,” ash-like “Nord Mystery,” or a coppery faux carbon fiber . Quilted, diamond-pattern leather is offered on seats, including bigger-bolstered chairs up front, and is no less welcome despite being a design cliché. (The front seatbacks could still use more cushioning and support). For a touch of added value, leather and heated rear seats are now standard on SEL models starting from $48,785, one trim level lower than before. Optional 30-color ambient lighting provides a literal glow-up. The new cabin won’t be confused with a Kia Telluride in edge-of-luxury terms, but it does meet longtime expectations that VW interiors should uphold the brand’s German heritage and punch above their weight.

Pictured below left, the new Atlas Peak Edition brings two exclusive colors (Avocado Green and Pure Gray), and outdoor adventure-looking add-ons, including blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires and black-and-silver body cladding. All 2024 Atlas versions get a brawnier mug, with a tasteful, black-scalloped grille digging deeper into a resculpted lower fascia. Most trims get white LED mascara with an illuminated front light bar and VW logo, with a full-length rear light bar standard. These details add up, including available 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels, heightening attention to the Atlas’ crisp-yet-understated sheetmetal.

A 12-inch center screen now hovers atop the dash. The size is a commendable upgrade over what was there before, but that’s all the praise it will receive. The Atlas has been blighted by Volkswagen’s new infotainment system, previously found in the ID.4 and GTI . The frustrating menu structure, wonky capacitive switches, dearth of physical buttons, voice assistant with questionable grasp of the English language … it’s all here. As such, while the new Atlas addresses many issues with the original version, Volkswagen has added something arguably even worse. It’s not as though VW plugged its ears here. Top executives are aware of how reviled the entire system is. They have vowed to replace them, beginning with steering wheels on a new Tiguan , and to update software as well. But the brand can’t junk its nearly-new system hardware overnight, without squeezing some use out of it. And the Atlas was obviously too far along in its development to be the recipient of an improved system (or perhaps to leave the perfectly serviceable old system in place).

At least it joins an eye-friendly 10.25-inch reconfigurable driver’s display with full-screen navigation readouts (for nav-equipped versions) and an optional head-up display. New standard gear includes three-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive front lighting, height-adjustable passenger seat, voice controls, wireless charging and VW’s wireless AppConnect. A standard IQ.Drive driver-assistance system brings features such as adaptive cruise, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot warning and automatic emergency braking that for 2024 better detects cyclists and pedestrians. Up to eight USB-C ports are available, with zippy 45-watt charging speed, in the sprawling interior that brings the family limitations of smaller SUVs (and even some rival midsizes) into stark relief.

The three-row Atlas can beckon normal-sized humans into the way-back, and still find room for nearly 21 cubic feet of luggage space behind the third row (it should remain one of the biggest and most versatile in this regard), and a class-crushing 96.8 cubes with all seats folded. For both models, second-row legroom rivals some full-size luxury sedans and SUVs, with 7.7 inches of fore-and-aft sliding and 14 degrees of rear recline. Meanwhile, its tricky folding action not only allows for a larger-than-usual pass-through to the third row, but lets parents keep many child seats installed when in use.

As iffy as the old interior could be, the Atlas’ biggest issue was previously found under the hood. Most versions had a narrow-angle VR6 good for 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four that gradually found its way into more versions had 235 hp and 258 lb-ft. It just wasn’t enough to motivate an SUV that could top 4,600 pounds. Both engines are now done for, replaced by the modernized, 2.0-liter turbo-four from the Golf R and Arteon . Even detuned to 269 horses and 273-pound feet, this engine finally gives the Atlas more than a shrug in response to heavy throttle: 60 mph arrives in 7.5 seconds in AWD trim, versus the 8.3 seconds of departed VR6 models, a palpable gain in stress-free pace. At 1,550 rpm, the four-cylinder generates 28% more torque than the departed six-cylinder, reducing the previous urge to cane the Atlas just to get things moving around town or entering a highway.

On grizzled-but-glorious Catskills roads, dashing through green curtains of surrounding ridges, the Atlas pulls strongly in second, third or fourth gear. Fourth gear will flirt with triple-digit speeds, easily enough grunt for this SUV’s chosen mission. The eight-speed automatic adds by-wire shifting, the previous (somewhat clunky) scepter-size console lever has been replaced by a vestigial piano-black toggle, and paddle shifters are now standard. Fuel economy wasn’t great before, either, and it too rises, to 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined for front-drive models, and with 4Motion all-wheel-drive, 19/26/22 mpg for SE trims, 19/25/21 for Atlas SEL trims, and 18/24/20 mpg for the Peak Edition and its all-terrain tires. Towing capacity holds steady at 5,000 pounds.

As ever, the Atlas’ light, almost dainty-feeling steering and absorbent ride — again, ask Americans how they like their SUVs — precludes any sense of being in a supersized GTI, or even a Mazda CX-90 . This goes for both versions, by the way, despite “Sport” being in the two-row’s name. Pretending they are, in fact, a GTI elicits a cold splash of understeer to bring you back to earth, parental responsibility or both. The brake pedal’s initial application is also cush enough to avoid upsetting baby; but a firmer step delivers surprisingly short and confident stops. Yet the Atlas will circle a yard as faithfully as a golden retriever: Steady, watchful, no surprises, no unexpected moves.

As much as the new infotainment system dampens the mood, the consolation for Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport buyers or shoppers is that history’s biggest Volkswagen now has much more going for it than square footage for-the-dollar: Sharper looks, stronger performance, more stuff, and a cabin that can hold its head up against key rivals. Listen closely, and you may hear a Volkswagen brand that, after years of static and missteps, is finally getting on Americans’ wavelength.
