I was born in the late '90s when technologies were emerging at their peak, and the computer was the most remarkable invention then. We are currently in the computer generation where almost every technology relies on computers, which will drastically change our lives. My father bought me a computer when I was in school. Since I was young, I have enjoyed dabbling with computers and experimenting with different applications. I am very fascinated with computers, and my keen interest in the ever-growing world of technology motivated me to take up engineering and drew away to choose Computer Science and Engineering as my major with an intense urge to develop into the challenging field. This fascination and opportunity paved the way for my master’s program.
I am [your name], a permanent resident of [address] who is very enthusiastic about technology and dreams of becoming a computer engineer. To fulfil my dream, I decided to study for a Diploma in Computer Science Engineering and enrolled in [school] in the year [year] and scored 92%. Separating from home for the first time and trying to adapt to the new environment and country significantly influenced my study. I learned more about computer architecture and applications during my diploma. Hence, my interest in the subject rose tremendously, so I enrolled in [college name], affiliated with one of the most prestigious universities of *, for my undergraduate course in the [year] and scored 78%. Now we are in the computer era, and I can sense there is still tremendous development in this field. As I am graduating now, my central goal is to continue my education in a more competitive, elite, and international environment.
I began to analyze my postgraduate studies and concluded to choose a logical destination: the United Kingdom, a country that has been instrumental in the development of computing and continues to deliver ground-breaking innovations in the 21st century. The UK has been the chief driver of innovation in computing, and the most innovative and successful companies in this field are primarily based there. Studying overseas in the UK will thus give me a fantastic range of professional skills and a much broader, more international perspective. Therefore, I am applying to join the MSc in Computer Science program commencing in [month, year]. I am convinced I am well prepared for the challenges of studying in a master's program because of my extensive academic and practical background, which I will describe in detail below.
After my graduation in [month, year] till now, I worked for an IT company named [company name] as a ‘Web Developer’. My job's leading roles and responsibilities are designing and developing the front-end (with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap), back-end with Javascript and NodeJs, and Database (with MongoDB and MySQL) in reactJS. I have done 6 months of Internship and Training at [company name] as a ‘Full Stack Developer’, where I have gained Industrial and practical knowledge. For my final year project, I created an **** whose design and functionality were all built from scratch using Python, JavaScript, C++ and Twitter API called Tweepy to collect Twitter’s data. This system is to *** whether they are positive, negative or neutral for the respective candidate and finally, my system will analyze the result based on people’s sentiments. During my undergraduate programs, I have participated in different workshops provided by companies like ***, *** and ***. My college's workshops are Android Application Development, Web Application Development, Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning. This training helped me enhance my practical skills, which are crucial to working in the real world. I had given numerous presentations and demonstrations about my assignments to department heads and respective teachers, whose feedback was always cheerful and appreciative. I am highly motivated and proactive at learning new skills and experiencing new things. This is precisely why I have decided to continue challenging myself by studying for a master’s degree in the UK.
I plan to be an IT entrepreneur in my country [country name], so I am choosing the MSc in Computer Science program for my postgraduate study. I believe that this program is an essential step to achieving my career goals and objectives. As per my research, this program balances advanced practical skills and theoretical knowledge to provide the ability to enter a range of professional IT disciplines and employment. I will gain a great understanding of current and progressive methodologies across various specialist topics, tools and environments demanded by the IT industry. Also, this program will cover modules like Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cyber-Security, Cloud Computing, and the Internet of Things which will broaden my theoretical and practical knowledge in different areas of Computer Science. My previous study also belongs to this field, and MSc in Computer Science is an advancement to my previous study.
I researched computer science programs at different universities in the United Kingdom. I found the *** University and its master's program (computer science MSc) that fits me to enhance my knowledge in different areas of computer science. The fee is also quite affordable than other universities like *** University, University of *** and ***. The one-year placement programs of **** fascinate me to join this university more. In the latest Research Excellence Framework, 30% of their research was world-leading or internationally excellent. They have a dedicated team of staff for supporting and assisting international students. A statement of purpose for an undergraduate or SOP is basically a lengthy essay, submitted by a student to the university, that highlight their important details. As the name depicts, this essay is to be written by an undergraduate who is interested in pursuing higher education in a certain institution. Knowing how to write an SOP is very important if you are planning to study abroad . SOPs are required by most of the educational institutions abroad before accepting the applicant as a student for a course.

A description of a person as a student along with their interests and personal goals is known as the Statement of Purpose. Individuals must also mention what they look forward to achieve in their careers. This description allows educational institutions to get an understanding of why you are interested in joining their college and how they can assist you in reaching your academic goals.
A statement of purpose includes the following content:
- Introduction to oneself.
- Academic experience and previous career.
- Interest in the program.
- Academic achievements or professional memberships must be highlighted.
- SOP for PhD
- SOP for Construction Management
- SOP for Hospitality Management
- It is an important component of the degree scholarship/course’s application.
- The quality of this document can make or break your chances of getting the admission/scholarship at your desired educational institution.
- The main aim of the document is to get the selection committee’s attention. The personal statement must convince the committee.
- This statement is also called the letter of introduction as it introduces the candidate to the education institute’s selection committee.
- An applicant can showcase his/her experiences, aspiration, and academic qualifications.
- The description also allows the applicant to show his/her communication skills.
- The quality of the statement decides whether the candidate will qualify for an interview or not.
SOP Format for Undergraduate
The student’s SOP reflects the overall personality of the candidate. It will include various elements about the student in detail. This can start from the basic introduction of the candidates and include their academic qualifications, reasons for choosing that university, and the expectations from the institution. While the statement of purpose of students of various categories differs, here is a basic and most generic format for the SOP for an undergraduate, which upGrad Abroad also suggests:
1. Purpose of the Study —
Writing in brief about the purpose of the study is essential for the student. It should include:
The intention behind selecting a course should be explained in detail. Like, if the student wants to complete the course and join a certain field for occupation, the individual should specify that. Or, if the person has plans for further education, it is better to explain that as well.
2. Choice of the Program —
There is always some inspiration behind a student undertaking a certain program. It should be explained in this section of the SOP. This should consist of:
If a candidate is applying to a foreign university, he or she must highlight the reason behind choosing that country. For example, if an undergraduate wants to opt for business management in Canada, he/she should write a small summary about why the business management courses in Canada inspire him/her and why he/she chose Canada.
The candidates also have to write something about why they have selected a particular university. If the candidate has done proper research and inquiry about the university, he/she may put forward those theories in the SOP for creating a better impression. For example, if a certain university is tagged as number one in the world for computer science education, then the student intending to pursue a computer science course can specify this.
Since an SOP is a detailed and informative letter about a candidate, it should outline the past experiences and academic history of the student. It should be broken into separate sections for easy reading.
If the student has a good academic record or has held a job in any field, the candidate should specify these in a precise manner. If the candidate has a certificate or notable achievement, it is better to emphasize that as well.

4. Personality —
The candidate should also provide some information about his/her personal traits. It helps the officials know in detail about the student’s personal life and character. This should include:
Out of the thousands of aspiring applicants in a certain educational institution, each candidate should have some unique quality that makes him stand out. A student must specify that quality in this section of the SOP.
SOP Samples for Undergraduate
There is no fixed pattern to be followed for an SOP in any university. That is why the students can find many SOP samples for undergraduate and graduate courses online. But some universities do provide the candidates with certain specific rules to follow. Accordingly, here is a sample statement of purpose for undergraduate admission of a student aspiring for an engineering degree:
I was very young when I started developing an interest in automobiles and their parts. This appreciation for these machines remained at the back of my mind all through the years as I grew up. I gradually decided to study to be a mechanical engineer. After clearing my 10th grade with excellent marks, I was sure that the engineering field will suit me. That is why I opted for entrance coaching during my 12th studies to crack the tests to enter the top colleges in India.
I recently came across a lot of studies and research published at your esteemed university. That is how I understood that it is one of the best in the world and can help me achieve my goals. Apart from the awards and recognitions, I also learned about students from this institute who have attained great success in bringing glory to the institution. All these reasons inspired me to opt for this university as the preferred institution to pursue my further studies and get an engineering degree.
Since I already had the dream of pursuing engineering as my career, I started taking extra interest in the coaching available for this field through the best classes available. I have made engineering a prime focus area in my life. That is why I can assure you that once I am a part of your university, I will give my best to be a student worthy of your institution. I also plan to complete my master’s in the same field. I want to take myself to the highest levels of gaining knowledge and wish to serve not only my country but the world too.
Just as a vehicle requires quality fuel to run smoothly and for a long, my dream of becoming an engineer requires the best education. With the right guidance and my skills, we can make the world a better place to live in. I hope that you will consider my application and provide me with a seat in your prestigious institution for a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering.

Here is a sample statement of purpose for postgraduate admission of a student aspiring for an MBA degree
Growing up in a family that comes from a business background, I always aspired to become a businessman. I realized that it would give me ample opportunities to communicate with different people. I can also use my creative skills and take forward my business ideas. I like the idea of starting something on my own and connecting with people. I believe I possess all the qualities that are needed to start my journey as an entrepreneur. This realization has led me to seek admission to this university.
- SOP vs Personal Statement

Here is a sample statement of purpose for postgraduate admission of a student aspiring for PhD in Marketing degree
I am presently working as a guest lecturer at ———College. My teaching responsibilities involve marketing management, brand and product management, modern banking, entrepreneurship, sales production, and advertising. South California University offers dedicated support to international students and is one of the top institutes offering this internationally recognized degree.
The university also covers every aspect of marketing like a channel of distribution, globalization issues, market response forecasting and more through proper research papers and methodologies. I am eagerly waiting to be part of the institution and mould myself into becoming a future leader.
If individuals write their SOPs in an impressive, precise, tactful, original, and unique manner, they can be sure that the institution will consider their application and provide the opportunity welcomingly.
Difference between SOP, Personal Statement and Motivation Letter
People find it difficult to differentiate between SOP, Personal statement and motivation letter. Let us look at the three to have a clear understanding.
Generally speaking, the personal statement describes what kind of a person you are while the SOP explains what you aspire to do in life. Both these documents play a vital role in determining your seat for the study program in the college.
When it comes to grad school, both the documents are different yet the same. Both of them demonstrate your nature and aspiration that help the admission committee in understanding you as a person. The personal statement is more informal than the statement of purpose.
One can be confused between SOP and Motivation Letter as many European universities in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and others, ask for the latter.
The motivation letter focuses on the career goals, future aspects, specific grad program, skills, and other professional work or internships that showcase your experience.
But the SOP allows you to talk about your past grades, qualifications, volunteering experience, internships, and other activities. The SOP explains how you performed in the academic field, your choice of subjects, past experiences, and more.
Many colleges, universities, and employers use these terms interchangeably.
The major difference between the three is the intention behind writing them and the length. In general, personal statements are in-depth and more personal about the applicant’s enigmas, strengths, personal life, weaknesses, failures, past achievements, etc. While a motivation letter consists of more unique elements related to the personality.
The LOM is more focused on the future aspirations and plans of the applicant. It allows candidates to talk about their past achievements, showing their commitments toward future goals.
Candidates must make sure that they have enough time to write down their LOM in detail. It also requires good research on the university and the specific program the candidate is interested in.
Is the statement of purpose needed for undergraduates?
For undergraduate admission, students must present their statement of purpose that can help them achieve their future goals. The document serves as a weapon to get educated in one of the top institutions of a country. This education will help them widen their knowledge and augment their learning.
What do universities look for in a statement of purpose?
A statement of purpose must show a candidate’s educational qualification, data analytical skills, and leadership since universities look for students with strong and varied interests and relevant experience.
How do you start a statement of purpose?
After brainstorming and writing down your ideas, you must start drafting your statement of purpose that must cover the following elements when applying to a desired university or school:
1. Introduction, introduce yourself and talk about your goal. 2. Write about what motivated you to choose a specific degree/program. 3. In the next step, explain why you deserve to be considered for the program. 4. Also, mention what you want to achieve by studying this field.
How do you write an undergraduate statement of purpose?
An undergraduate’s statement of purpose must have an introduction. It captures the reader’s attention and allows the admission committee to shortlist the deserving candidate.
Is SOP the same as the study plan?
This document explains why a candidate wants to attend a specific university. It also lays down the essential details about the applicant based on which they are selected or rejected. It can also be considered a study plan in which the student represents themselves, skills, and accomplishments.
Are SOP and College Essay the same?
The SOP is always submitted in the college before admissions; it emphasises a student’s qualifications, capabilities, and the reason they wish to apply for a particular college. It is covered in 800 to 1000 words. A college essay, on the other hand, a college essay allows the applicant to showcase their personality and usually comprises 250 words.
Should I start SOP with a quote?
Most admission committees do not find the use of clichés and quotes impressive. But some students can use inspiring quotes that relate to their vision that impresses the committee. The use of inspiring quotes done wisely can be a hit.
How long does it take to write a statement of purpose?
Applicants are always encouraged to discuss relevant challenges and how they deal with them. These are long and must be written in a detailed manner.
Is SOP and resume the same?
The applicant’s resume contains a list of accomplishments and experience. At the same time, SOP depicts the candidates’ achievements in his past academic record and states the purpose for joining the university of his choice. It covers the candidate’s objective and why’s behind joining the organisation.

Statement of Purpose – Computer Science
We are currently in the midst of a technological and computing revolution that will drastically change our lives and potentially redefine what it means to be human. I am very excited at the prospect of devoting my long-term career to such a dynamic, fast advancing field. Ever since I was young, I have enjoyed dabbling with computers and experimenting with different applications. Because my own lifetime has essentially coincided with the rise of the modern computing industry, I can sense that there are still tremendous developments to come in this field. It was natural for me to choose Computer Science as my university major, and now, as I near the end of my undergraduate studies, it is my central goal to continue my education in a more competitive, elite, and international environment.
There is only one logical destination for my postgraduate studies: the USA, a country which stands at the center of the computing universe. The US has been the chief driver of innovation in computing, and the most innovative and successful companies in this field are based there. Studying overseas in the US will thus give me not only a greater range of professional skills but also a much broader, more international perspective. Therefore, I am applying to join your MSc in Computer Science program, commencing in the fall of 2013. I am convinced that I am well prepared for the challenges of studying in your master’s program because of my extensive academic and practical background, which I will describe in detail below.
My academic experience thus far has provided me with a wide range of practical knowledge and skills that will be immensely useful when studying overseas at the graduate level. As a high school student, I excelled in courses related to physics, mathematics, and chemistry. I was fortunate during this time to have teachers who saw my interest in these subjects and encouraged me to continue broadening my scientific understanding and developing my analytical skills. It was due in large part to their guidance and advice that I chose to major in Computer Science in the university. As an undergraduate, I found that I deeply enjoyed learning about programming and systems analysis, and with my strong mathematics background I performed very well in courses concerning calculus, statistics, and differential equations. Now, in addition to my specialized knowledge of computer science, I have an appreciation for the breadth of this field and the nearly endless possibilities for further study.
In addition to the courses that I have taken, I have been very active outside of the classroom, participating in extracurricular activities and pursuing new experiences so as to push myself and broaden my horizons. For example, I took some time to travel across Europe by myself, an experience which, although at times difficult, ultimately made me a much more independent and confident person. I am now comfortable adapting to new situations and interacting with people who are different from me, qualities which will be tremendously useful when studying in the USA. Furthermore, when my hometown was devastated by a natural disaster, I volunteered to help the victims as an organizer, which involved raising money and providing food, blankets, and other supplies as needed. Aside from the enhanced communication and leadership skills this experience offered me, what I most value is my newfound understanding of the importance of service and helping those in need. Finally, in the university, I was the publisher of the monthly newsletter of my department, a role I took on in order to meet new people and learn a new range of skills. As these experiences show, I am highly motivated and proactive at learning new skills and experiencing new things. This is precisely why I have decided to continue challenging myself by studying for a master’s degree in the USA.
Regarding my goals for the future, I plan to take what I learn in the USA and apply it to the computing industry in my native country. This industry is rapidly growing and shows great potential, yet compared to other, more advanced countries it is still in its relative infancy. By studying in your master’s program and possibly working for a short period in the USA, I expect to have the expertise, the perspective, and the experience necessary to lead our industry to a new era. I also have many friends with similar goals, and I hope that we can one day collaborate to put our country on the map as an innovative force in the computing world.

How to Write Your Computer Science Statement of Purpose

Do you find it difficult to “sell yourself”? Most CS students do, at least in my experience. It’s a funny quirk. When you ask what they want to study in the future, too many respond with “Artificial Intelligence” or “Machine Learning”…and then they say no more. Very few respond with specific ideas about the problems they want to solve. Yet, when thinking about how to write a computer science statement of purpose, specific problems are everything .
We’re not selling ourselves. We’re selling our ideas . We’re selling the potential of our minds.
Just ask Ray, a specialist in Human-Computer Interaction who received a whole slew of admissions last year. After using the Structure is Magic template , Ray’s SOP was so incisive that it prompted one professor at his top school to write:
“Wonderfully written, ambitious, and aligns perfectly with the work we do at our lab.”
Can’t ask for a better response than that, can we?
Luckily for you, Ray’s essay offers lessons you can extract and use right now. He followed Structure is Magic closely, crafting a timeless and elegant argument. He expressed big and compelling ideas. He showed a concern for the greater impact of his work on society, and he described exactly how the professors at his target school can help him make that impact.
Want to write a computer science statement of purpose that earns multiple fantastic admissions? Read on and learn how.
The Structure
Before we read the essay itself, let’s look at how it’s structured into 4 neat sections. Each of the first 3 sections convey, in order, answers to the questions below. Then, the final section reaffirms them.
- Exactly which hyper-focused academic questions are most important to me, and how did I discover them?
- How will this graduate program help me solve these problems?
- What convincing proof do I have that I’m 100% ready to pursue these questions as a graduate student?
Thus, we can break Ray’s essay down as follows:
- Introductory Frame Narrative – The quick story of how Ray discovered the intellectual problems he wants to solve in grad school and then in his career.
- 2 paragraphs
- 28% of word total
- Why This Program – How this specific university will help Ray solve the problems he mentioned in the previous section.
- 27% of word total
- Why You’re Qualified – The academic and career highlights that prove Ray is capable of actually succeeding as a graduate student pursuing these problems.
- 3 paragraphs
- 36% of word total (this is where the essay gets too long)
- Closing Frame Narrative – Quick flashback to the intro, and reaffirmation of goals.
- 1 paragraph
- 9% of word total
Sections 1 and 2 (the Introduction and “Why I’m Qualified”) are probably too long, but other than that, Ray’s SOP is structured perfectly. For other students, I’d suggest they shorten sections 1 and 3 to less than 25% of the word total each. Maybe use that extra space in Section 2 and Section 4. Or…don’t add anything else at all. Remember: master’s applicants usually shouldn’t write more than 850 words.
In my experience, CS students, more than anyone else, love to write long “Why I’m Qualified” sections. They love to list hackathons they’ve won, internships they’ve held, classes they’ve taken, and programming languages they’ve learned. But it’s important to remember that this section isn’t your CV. It’s like a small box that only lists the highlights from your CV – the most important parts. Certainly not everything. In Ray’s case, his experiences were so unique that it was hard to cut them down. But you should. Cut them down as much as you possibly can.
Why? Because that’s not the most important part of the essay. The academic ideas you express, and your fit with the program – that’s where you truly sell yourself.
Wonderfully Written. Ambitious. Aligns Perfectly.
What’s so great about Ray’s SOP?
As you’ll see shortly, this essay tackles huge topics. It asks big questions . It shows a tremendous human desire to answer those questions. And, in its own engineer’s kind of way, it shows concern for real people.
Most CS applicants don’t dive very deeply into their “study plan” for grad school — they just list classes they want to take, and maybe mention a professor or two in passing. But Ray speaks like someone who’s worked in HCI and AR for years. He knows exactly where he wants to probe further, and knows exactly which professors are the best guides on this journey.
(Ray, it should be obvious, did plenty of research on his target programs.)
As you read, pay close attention to the questions Ray asks. He’s asking them to the professors at his target school. At the same time, he’s asking them to himself. When an answer appears, he tears it apart and finds the hidden questions inside. This is way deeper than most MS applicants go. Heck, it’s deeper than many PhD applicants go!
Through this process, Ray shows that he’s more than just a guy who can plug some Python into IDLE or iterate a Map in Java. He’s a thinker, a creator, an innovator. Then, when he explains how three specific professors at his dream school are already working on these questions that he’s just asked….well, that’s what we call a coup de grâce .
- He asks 6 questions.
- He describes how 3 professors are currently tackling those questions.
- He shows how he’s spent years preparing to work on these questions.
What do you think, should this guy get admitted? Let’s read his SOP and decide.
A Rockstar Computer Science Statement of Purpose
During my 2019 internship at JL Design Partners, an architecture firm in Sacramento, I was tasked with developing an Augmented Reality application for visualizing building designs. At that point, I was already intrigued by AR’s possibilities in diverse fields, from entertainment to aiding surgeons. Then, after two weeks of writing C# in Unity and establishing a workflow from Autodesk Revit, I loaded the prototype onto my phone and ecstatically invited my colleagues to try. Immediately, however, as I watched them rotate the virtual 3D structure by swiping on a 2D screen, I understood (with dismay) how counterintuitive the interaction was. At the time, I realized that products like daily-wear AR glasses could make architectural visualization more intuitive, but due to challenges with optics, batteries, and spatial understanding, these do not yet exist. Now, I wonder if solving these problems will be enough for widespread adoption at all. To what extent are we clinging to formats that do not present an effective way to interact with virtual content?
Which type of interface most complements AR? Which most improves cognitive processing and decision-making? Brain-Computer Interfaces are the common answer, but if so, what is the best approach to combining AR and BCI? What kind of neural activity should be employed? How can we design AR experiences for reactive BCIs? These questions lingered in my mind in the months that followed my internship. They remained there well after earning my degree in Computer Science, and even today, they resonate with the very same frequency. This is precisely why I seek admission to the Master’s Program in Computer Science at Stark University: to ascertain the optimal approach for virtual interactions that reduce cognitive load, enrich the senses, and augment human capabilities.
Perhaps no other graduate program in the world is more uniquely suited to helping me explore this niche within Human-Computer Interaction. The variety of interdisciplinary research carried out at the Stark HCI Lab, and the fact that it is one of the few funded master’s program that allow specialization in HCI, all compel my decision to apply. Certainly, coursework such as MCS731 Constructing Cross Reality Applications and MCS728 Affective Computing will prove essential as I begin to comprehend the core principles and design guidelines required for a thesis studying responsive and instinctual interactivity. Most importantly, however, is the opportunity to conduct research under Dr. Bruce Banner, Dr. Erik Selvig, and Dr. Jane Foster, whose work aligns perfectly with my goals of enhancing human cognition.
Particularly intriguing is Dr. Banner’s study on Electrodermal Activity and its relationship to physiological arousal. I hope to explore how this can be implemented as a metric to uncover cognitive loads of atypical input modalities. I am also captivated by Dr. Selvig’s work in augmenting user perception of the environment, and hope to investigate how eye-tracking can strengthen the system’s perception of user intent in HearThere , and how the sensor network in Tesseract can be used for augmented on-site exploration through persistent anchors. Additionally, I am open to working under Dr. Foster as her projects on musical expression and therapy ( Vocal Waves ) are similar to my ongoing work, Fluid Fingers . Having worked on numerous similar projects, I am confident I can make substantial contributions to these and other projects at Stark, while simultaneously exploring esoteric approaches like functional near-infrared spectroscopy for its superior spatial resolution (as compared to EEG) and resistance towards motion artifacts.
Perfect as the opportunity may seem, I am well aware that the daunting problems of AR require far more than general competence. Fortunately, my academic and research experiences have equipped me with the tools to face them. I was introduced to immersive technology in undergraduate coursework at Empire State University, such as Computer Graphics and Virtual and Augmented Reality. The Interaction Design Specialization from UC San Diego (via Coursera) further improved my understanding of Ideation, Prototyping, and Evaluation methods. Additionally, during my final undergraduate year, I developed a framework, ILMR, that allowed for prototyping hand interactions through direct manipulation with virtual content. Inspired by Google Cardboard, I conceived it using inexpensive and accessible modules like the Zeiss OnePlus headset and the Leap Motion Controller. However, it lacked depth perception and haptic feedback, which are vital in letting the user know they have successfully interacted with virtual content. Through a collaboration with Dr. Otto Octavius, a postdoctoral researcher at the Osborn Private Science Institute, we developed an interface, OptiTouch , that provided the semblance of haptic feedback using only visual cues.
My most rewarding experience, however, was not with ILMR, but rather the research I conducted unofficially with Professor Charles Xavier after graduation. I was intrigued by Neurofeedback and its non-pharmacological approach towards mental health therapy, but felt the feedback modality lacked appeal. Keeping ADHD-diagnosed children in mind, we devised an AR telekinetic experience where a user could bend a virtual spoon by reaching the desired psychological state. This work was accepted to the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality , where AR academia veteran Dr. Reed Richards claimed it to be impressive.
In my free time, I actively participate in hackathons, where I have led teams to multiple triumphs and developed multiple AR apps. One such was a music visualizer, VizAR , now published on the App Store. I redesigned the particle system in VizAR for Head-Mounted Displays, and enabled hand-particle interactions by implementing a Signed Distance Field. This ultimately led to my work, Fluid Fingers , which aims to elicit emotional states akin to those exhibited in live music performances. Considering these experiences, I feel confident that I am prepared to hone my abilities even further at the Stark Lab.
During my architectural design internship two years ago, I saw immediately the great chasm between our current technological capabilities with AR, and normal users’ ability to employ them. The questions that arose have been my guiding force ever since. This is precisely why I seek to contribute to the field of Human-Computer Interaction, and eventually work as a researcher in industry, ensuring AR’s impact in people’s everyday lives. To begin this effort in the Stark MS CS program would be the most tremendous honor of my career.
What should you take away from this essay?
- You should absolutely mimic the structure . Unless a specific school requires otherwise, there are no more effective ways to write a general statement of purpose.
- You should absolutely state, with 100% clarity, the questions you want to study in grad school.
- You should absolutely describe how professors in your target program are already studying these questions, and what you’d like to investigate under their guidance. If you don’t know already, then spend some time on the department website, or use a resource like Drafty to find professors who match your interests.
I’m indebted to Ray for allowing me to republish his SOP and to brag about his success. No matter which CS field you want to specialize in – whether HCC, Network Engineering, Computational Linguistics, or something else – there’s a lot you can learn from Ray’s example.
Ask big questions. Show that you have a real, thoughtful purpose. Show that you want to make a difference in the world. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about, right?
Then, if you can link those questions to specific resources, labs, or professors at your target program, you too will have a rockstar SOP on your hands.
“Wonderfully written…ambitious…aligns perfectly.”
You can get the same feedback, friend, and now you know how.

SOP for Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science
Sample Statement of Purpose for Computer Science (Undergraduate Degree Course; B.Sc.)
Introducing myself, I am XXXX permanently residing at XXXX, India. Currently, I am living with my family having 3 members; my father-Mr. XXXX (mention occupation of the father), my mother-Mrs. XXXX (mention occupation of the mother) and I. I passed the secondary school examination in the year 201X from XXXX (mention board of school education), achieved XX.XX GPA and senior secondary school examination from XXXX (mention board of school education) in year 201X with XX.XX marks . And now I have made plans for pursuing B.Sc. (Hons) computer science course at Brunel University London after researching all the possible study options available to me.
Choosing a dream destination for studying abroad is not an easy task. For studying abroad I preferred to make a choice from either of these two: USA and UK; world's most reputed destinations for pursuing higher studies; these countries are very well known for their research outcomes in technological and engineering domains. But various other factors led me to choose UK for my higher studies over USA. Firstly thinking about admission to an undergraduate degree in computer science, one must have a valid SAT or ACT score in order to secure admission at USA's best institutions and also, courses offered by the institutions in the USA, in terms of tuition fee expenses goes way beyond normal that could easily be borne by an international student. At most of the UK's institutions, I realized that I can easily secure admission even without having any kind of tests scores. Unlike USA, tuition fee structure for bachelor's in computer science degree courses at most of the institutions in UK is very well in the range of international students. In very similar manner to academic credentials from institutions in USA, degrees from UK institutions are highly recognized by world's top organizations and hence, can offer an opportunity to get employed with one of the best employers around the globe. Apart from these factors, UK, being one of the most developed nations in the world, offers world-class living standards.
In last I request you to kindly consider my candidature for admission to B.Sc. (Hons.) Computer Science course at Brunel University London and confirm a place to me in specified course option.

I am delighted to introduce myself as XXXXX, an Indian citizen. In 2017, I finished my tenth grade with a 10.0 CGPA on the CBSE board. I recently completed the CBSE board's 12th grade. I got an 82.3 percent grade and passed with flying colours.
My interest in law began when I was introduced to international law through Model United Nations, and it expanded as I spent hundreds of hours researching various international laws, treaties, and conventions. Model UNs were my introduction to the huge world of diplomacy, intellect, and in-depth knowledge that goes into enacting these difficult yet once enacted laws. Law has always been a subject of interest for me, but it became a passion after witnessing an occurrence that is still clearly remembered to this day.
My interest in law has prompted me to learn a great deal more about it, with each article, book, or case study proving to be more instructive than the last. I'd spend days and days examining a law, attempting to explain its existence, persuade the author of its need, and observe and envision its uses. This reduced my course selection to the greatest extent feasible, and it was quite apparent what I wanted to study. My actions were self-evident, and I was certain that law was the correct subject for me.
While reading lengthy legal publications or watching court proceedings, I realised how easily people may become bored or distracted, and I could never imagine losing my attention and missing even the smallest information. I've always enjoyed reading about instances that were diametrically opposed to each other and attempting to identify parallels in the approach employed, the plea entered, and the evidence presented. It'd be a wonderful, hard practice that I'd truly love since I'd get such a rush from discovering a resemblance or having a eureka moment. In my thoughts, I'd always practise opening or closing sentences in small ways to better them. Law moved from being a subject that attracted my curiosity to one that devoured all of my mental resources. I've learned to appreciate not just the subject's importance and ever-increasing relevance, but also its enormous historical significance, which is frequently underestimated.
The Bachelor of Laws programme will be a fantastic fit for me since I will be able to study law intellectually, which is my love and interest. My abstract and problem-solving abilities will improve as a result of this training. It will help me gain intellectual power and enable me to address current legal issues in a new way. Pursuing legal education will develop a strong sense of justice.
I have a sense of fairness in me, which allows me to evaluate and challenge the system's flaws. It will provide me with a practical opportunity to make a difference.
The Bachelor of Laws degree will be a fantastic fit for me since I will be able to study law intellectually, which is my love and interest. My abstract and problem-solving abilities will improve as a result of this training. It will help me gain intellectual power and enable me to address current legal issues in a new way. Pursuing legal education will develop a strong sense of justice.
I will study intriguing courses in the Bachelor of Laws programme, such as Foundations of Law, which will help me grasp the fundamental notions of legislation; Commercial Law, which will help me comprehend the body of law dealing with trade and commerce concerns; Public International Law, and more. I'll also learn how to put the principles into practice, which will help me implement them in real life.
Following the completion of my Bachelor's degree, I intend to continue my study. Master's degrees, in my opinion, enhance core notions and aid in achieving competence in an area. Because my parents are in India and I plan to live with them in the future, I will be practising law in India for the foreseeable future.
My parents have agreed to fund my studies. I'm submitting an application for a student visa. I am fully aware of the requirements that must be met, as given below. I am certain that, because of my talent, devotion, and desire to learn the law, I will be successful in completing the Bachelor of Laws programme and excelling in it. I appreciate the chance to express myself and would be delighted if my submission is taken into consideration.
I used to dismantle and re-model my tiny toys when I was a kid. The activity never lost its appeal, and as I grew older, I realised that I wanted to be an engineer and pursue my ambition of developing automobiles for the world's most prestigious brands. With excellence as a driving force, I chose to apply to India's best universities, the IITs, and began putting in additional hours as early as eighth grade. After finishing my tenth grade, I enrolled in a non-medical programme and began studying for the XYZ exams at a prestigious institute. I was certain of my decision and thought it was the best path forward...until fate led me to the United States.
While on vacation with my grandmother in the United States, I became connected with my cousin's acquaintances and neighbours. I formed a consistent connection with the neighbour by discussing vehicles and the sheer thrill of designing fantasy machines, and I would spend hours with him, sharing my own expertise and largely revelling in his knowledge. I was astounded by his degree of exposure, the ease with which he was able to apply what he had learned, and the highly developed thinking skill-sets he exhibited. Further discussing my professional goals, I realised for the first time in my life the value of knowledge and exposure. Further discussing my professional goals, I realised for the first time in my life the value of knowledge and exposure. Learning about their educational system, the extensive elaboration given to practical parts of education, and the firm commitment to holistic growth had me enthralled. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know, and the more I realised that limiting myself was not an option for my aspirations. The fact that, despite its rapid technological advancements, India was still in its infancy when it comes to the Automobile Engineering Sector. I also realised that in order to achieve my goal of working as a Design Engineer for one of the world's biggest automakers, I needed to build the correct network and gain the necessary worldwide exposure. Such was my awakening that I opted to pursue my degree from a Global University before returning to Indian soil.
Different goals necessitate different pathways, therefore I changed schools and enrolled in a school that followed the XYZ curriculum and was linked with it. I hoped that the two years would help me adapt to the teaching pedagogy and prepare me for the difficulties ahead. Despite the fact that my decision resulted in me having to redo 18 months of school, I knew that the effort I put in at the time would pay off in the long run. I worked hard, stayed focused on my objectives, and swiftly adjusted to the changes. I went beyond the curriculum to develop my analytical abilities by participating in Science Fairs and exhibits. As a natural leader, I was tasked with managing and arranging a variety of events, and I achieved outstanding outcomes while learning from the various scenarios. The remainder of my accomplishments are reflected in my academic achievements.
Another thing I learned from my American buddy was that academic success was not the most important factor, and I realised the true meaning of the phrase "all work and no play makes Jack a boring kid." In order to pursue my sporting passion with newfound zeal, I re-focused on the activities in which I had excelled in prior schools. I used to captain my home basketball teams and had given up the sport in order to pursue my goal. I went back to it with a vengeance, wanting to keep doing the same thing. My optimistic attitude, leadership qualities, and previous team management experience quickly earned me the position of School Cultural Captain for the 2011-12 school year. Continuing my quest for athletic greatness, I placed fourth in the inter and intra school fests. I felt the delight of giving and sharing as I moved out into the community. The experiences improved my abilities even more, and I continued to feel the force of information awaken my mind.
Moving forward, I feel I have laid the foundation for my future success. While motives are the gasoline that propels my professional ambitions forward, the engine is still missing, which your university may offer. I'm looking for a course in Mechanical Engineering with a Masters in Automobile Engineering, and my aim is to graduate from your university with a degree in Automobile Engineering and work as an Automobile Major. I'd be able to progressively progress toward constructing my own ideas, thanks to the technological competence I earned at your university.

Writing a Statement of Purpose
Tips on writing an sop - by arun vasan.
Universities in the US appear to believe that the logical end of education is enabling an individual to think on her own. This is why they ask you for a "personal" statement to give an account of experiences which you believe helped you decide to apply, your expectations from graduate school, what you propose to do in school.... Of course, the typical personal statement is not so personal, and is usually edited by half a dozen people at least.
The main idea behind this exercise is to give the admissions committee an idea of what to expect from a prospective student apart from her scores, GPA, and letters of recommendation. Who would've thought that actually asking a student to tell what he thinks of himself was a good idea ? The SOP, though it sounds unparliamentary, is a crucial part of the application process and needs a lot of time and effort.
I have put a few points down with my tongue firmly in my cheek. These are CS specific, but may apply to other disciplines as well. There are sharp differences of opinion among the graduate student/ professor community as to what makes an SOP tick. I take responsibility for neither the grammar nor the contents of this page. Use these tips at your own risk.
In case you are wondering, NO, I am not jobless. Yeah, I know, my soul just cries out to be blessed. Now, now, wipe the tears of gratitude, and prepare for the most enlightening sermon you will hear about grad school admissions.
Algorithm S
- 0. RTFAF: Read The Fine Application Form. Don't write a one-size-fits-all-univs SOP.
- 1. State upfront who you are and what you want. One should not have to search using a word processor whether you want an MS or a Ph.D.
- 2. Tell what you intend doing with your degree. Inevitably, this boils down to a suitable permutation of words from the set {creative, career, industry, academia, research, professor, university, lab, startup}.
- 3. Avoid hot air. Adjectives like thrill, passion, excitement, joy, etc., should be avoided like the plague. Explain what you expect from grad school. Of course, we all want a job, but try putting it down as politically correctly as you can.
- 4. Avoid quotations. You may have "miles to go before you sleep", "chosen the road less travelled", or "your-favourite-cliche-quote-from-high-school-here", but it ain't a personal statement unless you are quoting yourself, is it ?
- 5. Use simple English. Resist the temptation to use your new-found vocabulary from the GRE word lists.
- 6.Describe your experience. Don't say you were introduced to CS as a suckling infant, you started speaking in Python before your mother tongue, yada, yada, yada... No one actually cares for your experience as a kid, so keep it brief.
- 7. The most important experience you would've had would be your undergrad. Of course, I mean academic work. As an aside, I firmly believe that the day you really graduate is the day you realise you wasted four years. Describe your coursework tersely.
- 8. Explain a select few projects you did in gory detail and why that got you interested in research. This is a point of much debate. Personally, I like explaining things in detail while many people prefer "high level" stuff. The catch with my way is that you could say something blatantly wrong and possibly screw up your chances completely. Again, I feel that if someone knows what the hell she is talking about, she should be confident enough to sell what she did. I suggest you show your SOP to profs, preferably those who are writing your letters, to make sure you are not shooting yourself in the foot with amazing accuracy.
- 9. Articulate why you choose to work in the area you want to work on. For example, kernel hacking gives you the high, your best buddy is the memory allocator, etc., so you want to work in O/S. Or, you increase your treadmill speed like TCP increases its cwnd , you do a packet sniff to find out protocols used instead of chatting in a messenger, your concept of networking is making computers talk, so you want to work in networks. In particular, it will be ideal if it was something you did best. I've heard of a case where someone said the thing she did best was cooking. The story goes she baked a cake and sent it to the admissions committee. Harvard, rumour has it, fell hook, line, and sinker for this. The professors in CS@UM most likely don't care for your culinary expertise, in case this gives you ideas.
- 9.1 You could possibly angle for more than one area. If you can show some prior work, or what you can do, in more than one area, you are good. However, you should avoid things like "I like theory, systems, AI, and NC very much. Graphics and Software, a little less".
- 10. Once you've explained why you like some area(s), explain how you will fit in with work being done in *that* univ. Say how you, Prof.Foo, and Prof.Bar can attain the holy grail of networking together. You should appear in awe of them, yet appear indispensable to their work. Avoid mentioning persons alone, i.e., qualify a professor by the group he leads/is part of. You can rest assured any CS prof will be part of some group with what she thinks is a cool abbreviated name. This way you won't antagonise a rival professor in the same area who actually sits on the committee.
- 11. Market yourself with concrete statistics. I won't believe it myself if you claim you are the second coming of Knuth. It is very unlikely that the profs of a dept. will. After all, it is their fate to have seen a billion SOPs before yours and see many more after yours. That said, mention things like "I was ranked in the top 0.123% of the FOO exam conducted by the BARs." exactly once.
- 12. Try being humorous without sounding like a clown. Wit is something which really can't be forced into writing. So it is perfectly fine if you write something totally serious as long as it is cogent and forceful. Finally, finish off with a flourish.
- 13. If (you aren't sick and tired) goto step 0.
- 14. Stop reading this page this minute and go work on your application.

Write down the aims of your Statement of Purpose
An interesting aspect of university application is that most universities like Harvard and MIT do not interview students before admission.
They rely solely on the information that you provide during the application process.
Your Statement of Purpose for Computer Science is therefore your only chance to convince the university that you’re deserving of a slot.
The SOP represents the only chance for you to tell what your grades are not saying.
If you are applying for computer science or any other highly sought course like medicine, nursing, and mathematics, you’re guaranteed that all applicants have good grades.
We cannot emphasize this enough: Your Statement of Purpose for Computer Science is the only chance for you to impress the admission committee.
So, how best can you impress the admission panel and convince them that you’re the best bet?
To answer this question, put yourself in the position of the admission team and ask yourself what an ideal student for a computer science degree should look like.
Luckily, some of our team members at Phdstatementsofpurpose.com have been part of the admission committee and have recommended this set of questions.
Basically, the admission team will be asking two questions:
- Do we want this student on our computer science course?
- Do we want this student at our university?
These questions can further be broken down into smaller units:
- Is this student suited to the computer science course?
- Does the student have the qualifications and qualities to pursue a degree in computer science?
- Is the student hardworking and dedicated, or likely to drop out when things get tougher?
- Will the student give their best and their all for computer science as it gets harder?
- Can the student cope with the high pressure of a course as demanding as computer science?
- How will the student fit into the new environment?
- How well can the student communicate?
- What does the student know about this course?
- Does the student have genuine interest in the course?
- What’s the student plan after completing this course?
In an ideal work, you’d be required to answer these questions in a word or two but that’s not how things work. So read on to know exactly what to write and where.
Make notes about yourself
Now that you’ve an idea the sort of questions that will be ringing in the back of the admission committee’s mind, it’s time to think about yourself. Think about the answer to all the questions above and as you answer them, provide examples.
How do I write my Statement of Purpose for Computer Science?

- What are your future plans?
Do you want to become a computer scientist, a programmer, or an expert in artificial intelligence and machine learning? Describe briefly what your future plans are and connect to how a degree in computer science will help.
These questions are discussed in more details HERE
If you’ve answered all the questions above, it’s time to put them into a proper structure through paragraphs.
A Statement of Purpose for Computer Science is typically 500-1000 words so you have to be brief and concise.
We’ve broken down what should go into each paragraph.
The easiest way to know what to include in the Statement of Purpose for Computer Science is to look at the course content.
After you familiarize yourself with that the university and program have to offer, link them clearly with your personal qualities, achievements, and future goals.
How do I write a Statement of Purpose for Computer Science introduction?
At phdstatementsofpurpose.com, we recommend starting your SOP for computer science with a story about how you came to be interested in computer science.
You may also start it by explaining why you are fascinating by the subject and certain topics.
In the example below, the applicant started with a story of how he was attracted to computer science.
“I grew up in a part of Africa where most Africans consider remote. Mobile network was hardly steady and we had to walk a long distance to find coverage for a minute or so chat with our relatives in the city. My grandfather’s phone, the only one in the locality was an object of wonder and fascination. When an uncle visited with what I learned to be smartphone, I talked about it over the next few days in school. He would occasionally send money to his father, who would travel 100 miles or so to get an agent to withdraw the money. How could money fly from one phone to another over long distances? Such questions disturbed my young mind a great deal. I started making phone toys from mud and would mimic my grandfather, quite to the amusement of everyone. My ‘wakie Takie’ was displayed in the school’s innovation week and my obsession with communication gadgets was set aflame.” This introduction is extracted from a Statement of purpose for computer science that we helped edit and review. The SOP can be accessed HERE
Alternatively, you may start your computer science statement of purpose by using a “hook”. This may be in the form of an interesting anecdote or a quote.
Our experience however is that when these hooks or anecdotes don’t work, the statement of purpose looks really bad.
To conclude your Statement of Purpose for Computer Science, we recommend that you round off by describing your future goals and how they align with the program, qualifications, and interests.
“Everything that I have done in my whole life has prepared me for this opportunity. Coming from a poor, rural community to attend a top academy and graduate top of my class was testament to my mental acuity and resilience. I intend to bring the same dedication and commitment that has brought me this far and with the support of the wonderful faculty and community at XXX, I am sure that I will excel.” This applicant has concluded his statement of purpose for computer science by reiterating how prepared he is for the program. This conclusion is extracted from a statement of purpose for computer science that we helped edit and review. Full version is available HERE
The Do’s and Don’ts of a Statement of Purpose for Computer Science
- Use positive language
A hack we’ve discovered in our more than a decade of editing and reviewing statements of purpose is that the university requirements offers the blueprint of the language to use.
To make this clearer, what we mean is that you need to visit the university admission requirements page and look at the words that they have used to describe the profile of prospective applicants.
Write down the list of words and sentences that appear frequently in the requirements.
Paraphrase these words and sentences and write in a similar style.
- Do not be arrogant
- Don’t include unnecessary information
- Don’t use quotes and anecdotes unless you can back them up and they are relevant
- Avoid clichés
Writing the first draft
Now that we know what a statement of purpose for computer science is, what to include the introduction and conclusion, and the language, it’s time to craft the first draft.
Remember the questions we formulated earlier and the structure we described.
Since this is the first draft, it rather be long as it’s easier to trim it than be short because it is harder to add new information.
As you create the first draft, remember the following:
Back everything with facts and examples
Don’t just write that you’re a team player. Show that you’ve work in a collaborative setting and describe your roles.
Seek Feedback

Statement of Purpose in Computer Science Sample 1
The choice of pursing computer science was a natural one for me. Just aged 9, I was playing the piano for my church. My mind could not but help notice the structures and patterns by fingers were following as I mesmerized a packed audience that ceaselessly marveled at my dexterity at such a young. In school, I was a precocious kid who excelled in numbers to the extent that the subject became dull. It was not until I was introduced to computers that the fusion between numbers, music, and computers became so intriguing that I decided to pursue the additional units in the three subjects.
I was particularly drawn to the use of spreadsheets and the underlying logic. As soon as I was introduced to visual basics, I had figured out how I would employ it to solve some basic problems at my family business. I created for the business an accounting system that accepted various modes of payment, conducted automated calculations, and automatically dispensed receipts.
At school, I was quickly fast-tracked to join the senior year that was creating a database website for the school that would help in creating a system to manage homework. My contribution led to creation of a portal that made it easy to access, submit, and comment on homework, actualizing the school’s plan of improving parental participation. For this effort, I was awarded the Champion Award and a scholarship to pursue computer science at the school’s college. Unfortunately, I could not take up the offer as the course content was not aligned with my interest.
Your university represents the most logical choice for me for various reasons. Your computer science program is highly focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning, two areas of computing that I am heavily interested in. I am particularly interested in learning under Prof. XXX, whose contribution to artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis has saved many people the pain of invasive diagnosis.
In future, I see myself working in the area of artificial intelligence and robotics. Your program is therefore suitable for me as this is an area you focus on a lot.

Inquisitive minds foster curiosity, which in turn, breeds innovation. The scientific world labels this process, Research. I like to call it “Making a Difference.” Now the path toward such a defining milestone does not work out as smoothly as it sounds. I, too, faced my fair share of troubles along the way, starting with my diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. At the time, my world shattered completely. However, being determined, I re-programmed my internal GPS toward the stable ground. Somewhere along this stumbling journey, I came across the saving words of C.S Lewis: “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny,” which eventually rescued me. Ever since, they have become my guiding light, rekindling the flame – never to give up.
I am applying to Stanford University for a doctorate in Computer Science. My research interests include co-designing hardware and software configurable computer systems, performance optimization of processor architectures, and rapid prototyping through FPGAs. My curiosity in the field sparked when my undergraduate coursework exposed me to several important aspects of embedded systems and MIPS architecture. Throughout my academic career, I continuously pushed myself to raise the bar, eventually making it to the Dean’s Honor List and securing a 100% merit scholarship during my grad studies. Considering all that I have achieved, I am confident that I now possess the right technical skills and scientific approach, along with deep-rooted commitment and motivation to embark on a journey to explore this avenue in greater detail.
I passionately opted for an Electrical Engineering major for my undergraduate degree six years ago. For my senior year project, I was in a team of three who programmed and mapped a 5-staged MIPS single-core processor pipeline onto a Xilinx FPGA. The project initially came our way through a friend in contact with Dr. X, who, at the time, a post-doctoral research scientist at MIT, proposed this as a valuable thesis to serve as a strong foundation for future architectural development.
The aim was to design a basic structure that can be extended to a multi-core, fully functional embedded system in the future. We programmed the pipeline in VHDL and optimized it with a hazard detection unit, aggressive static branch prediction, and forwarding logic. We also built an assembler in C++ to convert MIPS-32 assembly instructions into machine language for the Instruction Memory.
My undergraduate degree fixated my attention on the architectural aspects of processors. It honed my practical skills through extensive lab work and semester projects necessary to be at the forefront of the subject. My 1.5 years of experience as a teacher assistant for many exciting engineering courses also solidified my concepts. It taught me various flexible yet effective ways to communicate ideas to my students in an impactful manner.
Subsequently, I spent the next two years at graduate school, attaining a Computer Architecture and Embedded Systems degree. It was a rewarding experience that expanded my horizon and reinforced professional bonds with contemporary researchers in the field. For my graduate thesis, I worked on extending the functionality of an educational simulation tool pioneered initially by Dr. X. The tool aims to complement graduate-level theoretical studies of MIPS architecture. The thesis entailed an intensive literature review into floating point instruction latencies and research into the possibility of increasing the throughput by reconfiguring the multicycle execution and memory stage. While programming in Visual Basic, I refined and simplified the user interaction experience by introducing a hierarchy of nested UI screens.
Further development of the MIPS FP simulator, the first of its kind in the reconfigurability of the pipeline it offers, is still underway before its release to the web. Along with working on the pipeline’s development and code optimization, I am also drafting a research paper for submission to the IASTED International Conference on Computers and Advanced Technology in Education. I believe that persistent thinking and hard work associated with extensive literature surveys embellished my research skills and taught me perseverance in facing challenges.
After graduation, I continued my quest to learn and enhance my software development skill set. As a Software Engineer at Apple, I am developing a front-end web portal on Google’s recent media hype structural framework, AngularJS. I have also worked with Dr. A to explore architectural aspects of Graphical Processing Units and GPU correlation with Operating Systems in general. In addition to building upon my problem-solving abilities and time management, my experience so far has required me to collaborate and brainstorm ideas in teams, hence polishing my team communication skills. This constructive training prepares me well for the rigors of practical life as a doctorate candidate at Stanford.
My country suffers critically due to a deficit in employment and research opportunities in the local embedded industry. To add salt to the wound, the societal norms and traditions favoring the male demographics act as a taboo for the current aspiring generation of female individuals, who, despite all odds, relentlessly strive hard and stand their ground to stay above the murky waters. Being a member of society’s under-represented female faction, I possess this will of fire and inherent motivation to prove myself every step of the way.
The prospect of obtaining a terminal degree, from Stanford, under the mentorship of world re-known faculty fuels my energy to dive deeper into the field of architecture and embedded systems, design innovative software/hardware solutions to intricate problems, and conduct meaningful Research. The program is an example of expanding my research horizons, strengthening my concepts, and increasing my experience through quality industrial and academic exposure.
I am much impressed by the current projects undertaken by the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In particular, the work of principal investigators, namely Professor Clark Barrett, and Professor Gill Bejerano, fascinates me in alignment with my interests. I believe working with them would be an invaluable, enlightening opportunity indeed. I am confident that the strong ideas I can bring to the table, backed by my well-founded academics and valuable experience, would benefit the Stanford research community.
For me, the Stanford research apprenticeship is the fundamental aspect of the doctoral experience. I expect to participate in this program, with the guidance of my academic advisor as well as other Stanford faculty. During the apprenticeship, I can strive to receive a multi-year funding package, which includes chances to work as teaching and research assistants for my professors’ courses and research projects. Through this model, along with their coursework, I can also have the chance to receive preparation over the course of about five years to become exceptional researcher and university teacher.
Upon completion of the degree, I intend to initiate various projects in conjunction with the R&D departments of the embedded industry. I also envision imparting education to young intellectual minds through technology. With it, I hope to develop e-learning web portals dealing specifically with educational simulation tools for the field of computer architecture and embedded systems. But I feel, from where I stand, that there is still a very long way to go, a journey that I am incredibly excited to embark upon.

Sample SOP: Computer Science

This sample SOP is for applying to a master’s program in Computer Science in the USA.
We are currently in the midst of a technological and computing revolution that will drastically change our lives and potentially redefine what it means to be human. I am very excited at the prospect of devoting my long-term career to such a dynamic, fast-advancing field. Ever since I was young, I have enjoyed dabbling with computers and experimenting with different applications. Because my own life has essentially coincided with the rise of the modern computing industry, I can sense that there are still tremendous developments to come in this field. It was natural for me to choose Computer Science as my university major, and now, as I near the end of my undergraduate studies, it is my central goal to continue my education in a more competitive, elite, and international environment.
There is only one logical destination for my postgraduate studies: the USA, a country that stands at the center of the computing universe.
It was due in large part to their guidance and advice that I chose to major in Computer Science at the university. As an undergraduate, I found that I deeply enjoyed learning about programming and systems analysis, and with my strong mathematics background, I performed very well in courses concerning calculus, statistics, and differential equations.

Statement of Purpose Computer Science
What inspired this person to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science? It all started when their brother gave them a laptop. Initially, like most kids, they used it for gaming. However, their curiosity about how the computer worked grew. They were fascinated by the graphics and how the computer interpreted their actions. Over time, they realized that behind the screen, there was nothing but a few lines of code. This sense of wonder and desire for knowledge drove them towards a career in computers.
After gaining a solid understanding of the basics during high school, I embarked on a four-year undergraduate degree and now I am eager to pursue a master’s degree to further explore my childhood dream: comprehending the inner workings of computers. Throughout my academic journey, I consistently showcased a strong affinity for mathematics – achieving an impressive 96% in 10th grade and earning an A+ in my first year of undergraduate studies. This growing passion for mathematics greatly influenced my analytical thinking and decision-making skills, resulting in me choosing to pursue a computer science degree for my undergraduate studies. Thankfully, I was accepted into xyz college, one of India’s top-ranked engineering institutes.

The courses in Information Science provided me with a strong foundation in the basics. The laboratory courses enhanced my understanding, and the demanding assignments improved my technical and programming skills. Additionally, I engaged in extracurricular activities and organized technical events, fostering teamwork and leadership qualities. By participating in these events, I learned how to interact with others and make decisions. Lastly, as part of a team of 2, I constructed a “Wikipedia Search Engine” for my final year thesis project.
We came across a fascinating project on the Computer Science website of abc University. Intrigued, we decided to take on the challenge and test our knowledge. The project involved building a search engine that could semantically search Wikipedia and present links to Wiki pages closely related to a user’s query. The search engine would take a user’s phrase as input, navigate to the relevant Wikipedia page, extract all internal links, and populate the search page with these links based on the frequency of the input phrase, displaying them in descending order of their score.
This project provided me with a comprehensive grasp of Java and database principles. During my third year, I developed a website for the Department of Environmental Science, which honed my proficiency in JavaScript, .NET, and CSS. While pursuing further education was crucial, I acknowledged the significance of acquiring practical work experience to supplement my understanding of the field. Subsequently, I joined Mind Tree where I underwent training.
I gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for NET technology when I began my project. It made me realize the distinction between academic coursework over four years of college and the practical knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the business world. I spent 10 months at Mindtree before being offered a position at McAfee, a leading global company in network and security. This work experience proved to be highly valuable for me on multiple levels. The amount of careful thought and planning involved in product development is immense. Working at pqr and fgh provided me with unique and contrasting experiences.
The previous experience enhanced my research abilities, while the current experience has developed teamwork and collaborative skills with colleagues and superiors. It also helped me embrace challenges in learning new domains and technologies, familiarize myself with unfamiliar concepts, and cultivate professionalism. In my past role at a different company, I worked as a .Net technology and database specialist. However, currently I am employed as a quality assurance engineer at my present company.
Having gained experience in the corporate world and acknowledging my strengths, I believe it is now the ideal time to further my studies and become a leader in my area of interest. I strongly believe that pursuing graduate studies with a research focus will allow me to gain extensive knowledge in computer science and ultimately propel me to new heights in my professional journey. Writing the Statement of Purpose
The statement of purpose should convince the admissions committee that your achievements show promise for your success in graduate study. Think of the statement of purpose as a composition with four different parts.
Make sure to check on the appropriate departmental website to find out if your statement should include additional or specific information.
Part 1: Introduce yourself, your interests and motivations
Tell them what you’re interested in, and perhaps, what sparked your desire for graduate study. This should be short and to the point; don’t spend a great deal of time on autobiography.
Part 2: Summarize your undergraduate and previous graduate career
a) Research you conducted. Indicate with whom, the title of the project, what your responsibilities were, and the outcome. Write technically, or in the style of your discipline. Faculty are the people who read these statements.
b) Important paper or thesis project you completed, as well as anything scholarly beyond your curricular requirements.
c) Work experience, especially if you had any kind of responsibility for testing, designing, researching or interning in an area similar to what you wish to study in graduate school.
Part 3: Discuss the relevance of your recent and current activities
If you graduated and worked prior to returning to graduate school, indicate what you’ve been doing: company or non-profit, your work/design team, responsibilities, what you learned. You can also indicate here how this helped you focus your graduate studies.
Part 4: Elaborate on your academic interests
Here you indicate what you would like to study in graduate school in enough detail to convince the faculty that you understand the scope of research in their discipline, and are engaged with current research themes.
a) Indicate the area of your interests. Ideally, pose a question, define a problem, or indicate a theme that you would like to address, and questions that arise from contemporary research. This should be an ample paragraph!
b) Look on the web for information about departments you’re interested in, including professors and their research. Are there professors whose research interests parallel yours? If so, indicate this. Check the specific program; many may require you to name a professor or professors with whom you might work.
c) End your statement in a positive manner, indicating your excitement and readiness for the challenges ahead of you.
Essential Tips
1. What the admissions committee will read between the lines: self-motivation, competence, potential as a graduate student.
2. Emphasize everything from a positive perspective and write in an active, not a passive voice.
3. Demonstrate everything by example; don’t say directly that you’re a persistent person, show it.
4. If there is something important that happened to you that affected your grades, such as poverty, illness, or excessive work, state it. Write it affirmatively, showing your perseverance despite obstacles. You can elaborate more in your personal statement.
5. Make sure everything is linked with continuity and focus.
6. Unless the specific program says otherwise, be concise; an ideal essay should say everything it needs to with brevity. Approximately 500 to 1000 well-selected words (1-2 single space pages in 12 point font) is better than more words with less clarity and poor organization.

Where are the women in Computer Science?

Although computer science is one of the fields poised for exponential job growth over the next several years, there’s a glaring lack of women entering the field.Since 1984, the number of computer science degrees awarded to women has steadily declined, and today only 13 percent of computer science graduates are female. Accordingly, top jobs in the field are male-dominated. A recent study by technology outsourcing and recruiting firm Harvey Nash Group found that out of 166 U.S.-based technology firms that replaced their CEOs last year, only six appointed a woman for the position.

Julie Gill, a recent Pace University computer science graduate who now does web development and tutoring for Mathnasium, a math learning center for kids, says her father was a programmer and encouraged her to learn. “When I was a little kid, he sat me down in front of a computer and said, ‘Why don’t you learn how to program?’” she says. “Throughout school I did various programming languages, never in a class but just on the side.” Her aptitude eventually led to a scholarship for computer science, but she says that if her father hadn’t been a programmer, it’s unlikely that she would have pursued the field. “This career path would never be recommended to you,” Gill says. “Girls and their friends at school aren’t talking about computers. In elementary school, when the computer breaks, teachers will often choose a boy to come help.”

Computer Science is now the motor of our world. This field is changing the way that we think about education as well as technology, with endless possibilities for advancement in our century. New communications systems are especially critical to countries that are struggling to develop economically. Cell phones have continued to represent an advanced and dynamic communication revolution. Of even greater importance for the future, however, is the way in which a fuller integration into the world economy through Internet participation is on the horizon as well in many areas that are in desperate need of economic development. The importance of this for the Developing World can hardly be over estimated.
The Humanitarian Side of Computer Science
Science magazine recently covered Begoña Vitoriano Villanueva’s story about how she embarked on a career that is doing something practical to eradicate the social inequalities between the developed and developing worlds. Vitoriano is a mathematician, but she’s working to develop two computer tools alongside two colleagues at a university in Madrid, Spain. The first is designed to guide logistics during humanitarian efforts, determine the magnitude of a natural disaster and the extent of its consequences speedily. The second aims to help humanitarian agencies distribute food, water and medicine more effectively.
Vitoriano’s story is just one example of the many individuals who work in programming, computer software development and technology innovation to humanitarian ends.
The Humanitarian FOSS Project is a collaborative, community-building project that was started by a group of computing faculty and open source fans from universities and colleges in the US. The goal of the organization is to build a community dedicated to building and using free and open source software to benefit humanity. That means helping feed needy people in Haiti, delivering supplies to earthquake survivors in China, or managing medical care for malaria victims in Rwanda. For information about their undergraduate internship opportunities, check out their website at hfoss.org.
So are there opportunities for computer scientists and information technology boffs in the humanitarian arena? Certainly. In fact, it’s one of the most versatile careers to be in.
Computing for good combines technology and activism in their work as an agent of change at the Georgia Tech College of Computing. They have ongoing projects you could get involved with, so check out their site at computingforgood.wordpress.com.
For a larger project, have you considered Google? They develop almost everything, of course, including medical technologies, infrastructure technologies. Tesla Motors and their electric cars might be an interesting choice. Or you could check out heruko, an open course company and cloud application platform who could benefit from your skills. And monitoring the companies that that Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donate to could be a smart move so you’re kept abreast of all the concerns doing great work in this world. But don’t forget that there are thousands of NGOs and other smaller organizations out there to help you gain experience and hop up the humanitarian IT career ladder.
When it comes to jobs, a simple search brings up some interesting options. Intellectual Ventures (IV) Lab, for example, is currently searching for a Desktop Systems Specialist in Washington State, USA. IV Lab working on the very beginning stages of an invention, refining the technology to demonstrate its potential for commercial and humanitarian use. The Desktop Systems Specialist should provide accurate and prompt technical support for all desktop PCs, laptops, printers, desk phones and all other devices, provide customer support and other tasks. A degree in a related area and 2-5 years of experience in the field or related area is preferred, as well as other general skills like strong customer service and communication skills. This position seems like an interesting way in get in the door at a company like this.
Masters Programs
Nothing could be truer than to say that a Masters degree can take you a long way in the humanitarian field. Choosing a path related to the global nature of humanitarian work is also an option for you to consider. For example, the Masters in Information Systems Management (Managing Global Software & Service Supply Chains) at Walden University offers you an in-depth understanding of the role technology plays in achieving an organization’s goals. It’s designed for IT professionals who would like to develop advanced management skills and strengthen their knowledge of IT systems in a global marketplace based on best practices in outsourced and offshore development.
The MSc in Software, Systems and Services Development in Global Environment course at the University of Oulu, Finland, is a two-year full-time program that provides multidisciplinary knowledge of software, systems and services development in a global context.
Or perhaps you’d like to focus on the social side of IT, and do a Master’s program in Social Information Systems at the Open University of Cyrus, where you can develop the skills needed to understand and improve the interaction between people. Information and technology. You’ll have the opportunity to deeply study the collaboration between end users, collective intelligence, social interaction, the design of social information systems, advanced web technologies and programming, the design of educational software and many other fascinating modules as part of the course.

Bridging the gap
Townsend is also the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant aimed at encouraging more women to explore computing as a career. She says the reasons that few women pursue technology are “complicated and varied,” but that the big picture is that the pipeline from elementary school to a computing career shrinks with each higher level of education.
“My own NSF grant works at the undergraduate and graduate school portions of the pipeline to create a number of regional areas where women in computing ... meet biennially at a conference to gain experience speaking and sharing research, networking with each other, interacting with industry sponsors who offer internships and jobs and listening to speakers who share realistic information about life in computing,” Townsend says.
But, she says, early intervention is critical to reversing the decline of women in technology careers. Lack of K-12 computing courses and dull computing courses at the middle school level, lack of accurate career information about computer science and the absence of female mentors in the field all play a role in inadvertently turning young women away from the industry.
“From a very young age, we need to give girls the confidence to take risks and make a few mistakes,” she adds. “As a programmer your whole day is pretty much fixing your own mistakes, so we need to teach girls they don’t have to be perfect, and just outright encouragement for girls who are good at problem-solving.”

In the present world that focuses on innovation and computing applications, there is hardly any field that has been untouched by the all-encompassing facets of technology. As a kid, I was always mesmerized by how simple hi-tech appliances made our daily activities smoother and efficient to carry on. As an ardent gaming fan and tech geek, I was always curious in exploring the inner-workings of the daily appliances we use and I would always have a screwdriver box ready to get to the bottom of everything. While I was passionate about the hardware aspects, I got inclined towards programming and coding when I studied computer science as an elective in 12th grade.
Python was the first programming language I learned while I was in school and then went on work on coding and building new data networks from scratch. I decided to pursue BTech in Electronics and Communications Engineering because my passion for electronics was abundant and I couldn’t resist pursuing this specialisation for my bachelor’s degree. I worked on different projects during my internships while I pursued undergraduate studies and these helped me figure out my inclination towards computing technologies.
Before opting for a master’s degree, I wanted to gain prior work experience in this field so I worked as a Junior Data Scientist at FinCorp, which aimed to build a hi-tech AI-blended Finance technology that can automate financial services. After working at FinCorp for over two years, I realised that Computer Science is the core specialisation I want to pursue for MS. That’s when I came across the meticulously structured MS in CS program at your university and decided that it is the right one for an experienced data science professional like me.
An MS in CS will help me get valuable insights into the world of Computer Science, Data Analytics, Network Programming, Algorithms and Operating Systems and much more. - Extracurriculars: Universities abroad look for holistic development in candidates rather than just classroom knowledge. Extracurricular activities are as important as your academic reports. Of course, good scores have more priority, but your application will most likely be rejected if you lack soft skills.
- Overall Improvement: Factors such as community service experience, awards, and certificates in other competitive fields are an added advantage.
- Work Experience: Though work experience is not a must-have for all universities, it adds to your profile. Most students who move abroad for a master’s tend to have a few years of work experience. It helps the university understand how much collaborative and leadership skills you have.
- Future Goals: Including your goals and motivation is crucial to any SOP. Universities admire ambitious students. Include how this degree is important in achieving your goals.
- Clarity: An SOP is primarily an essay and has to be treated that way. Make sure your writing is neat and your intentions are clear. Consult an expert if you must.

Since childhood, my love for computers has been constant. I was introduced to them in the early years of MS-DOS, and since then, my interest in computers and their logical functioning has only grown. My interest led to completing my undergraduate program in Computer Science with a well-rounded performance. Not only did I manage to keep my grades above 3 GPA, but I was also active in my university’s debating and robotics societies . One of the crowning moments came when I won the inter-university robotics challenge as a part of the 4 member team.
A major reason behind choosing the University of XXXX is its superior robotics facility and world-renowned faculty in both AI and robotics. Not only does the university remain a beacon of reputed higher learning in the subject matter, but your curriculum is exhaustive and helps students obtain in-depth learning in areas within CS. In addition, the culture of learning and hard work that your institute creates fits me perfectly, and being a part of your university’s MS program would be an ideal goal.

It spurred my interest in robotics as a means to find real-life solutions. Pursuing MS in Computer Science at your university would prove greatly beneficial in honing my skills for the same.
Along with these professional and academic experiences, I remain an active debater, representing my college at state-level competitions. The advent of smart machines has played a vital role in revolutionising how we function as a society. My undergraduate degree has been in Computer Science, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with tech companies like CISCO and Google. During this period, I’ve had the opportunity to witness how intelligent machines and algorithms can be designed to bring pivotal changes in how humans work and operate. This has spurred my interest in furthering my knowledge of Computer science and its real-world applications.
*Insert relevant academic information relevant to the MS program*
My foray into CS and computer programming stems from an off-chance conversation with my brother, an IT professional, while I was back in school. He saw my interest in computers and introduced me to programming languages. Although difficult, I soon picked up languages such as C++ and C. When I entered my undergraduate program, I was already comfortable with other programming languages like Python.
My work with CISCO helped me gain exposure to global systems. At the same time, like Google, I led a team of programmers to build and execute customer-relevant programs as part of business offerings.
I also built valuable experience working on Cloud computing as part of the G-suite, which helped me understand the nuances. I intend to use my knowledge working in these fields as a stage to build better systems for solving business problems. The MS program at your university would prove of great use in doing so.
*Insert examples of cross-functional jobs and other leadership roles are taken as part of the working experience*
The aim of using smart algorithms that address the inefficiencies in our business processes has motivated me to pursue an MS degree. Doing so from the University of XXXX would help me access the best of both faculty and resources in taking my knowledge of building such systems to a new level. Frequently Asked Questions
Q. how do i start a sop for ms in cs.
A. Start with why you wish to study Computer science. Make your intentions clear. You can also draw inferences from the latest developments to show how well-updated you are, emphasising your interest in the field. You can also add your achievements and motivation to convince the admission panel of your interest in the field.
Q. What is the weightage of SOP for MS in CS?
A. Though universities do not officially declare it, SOPs account for at least 20-30% of your application. SOPs have the power to make or break your application and require a good effort. Even if your academic records are in your favour, a bad SOP can result in rejection. In fact, most universities and visa offices reject students based on unclear SOPs.
Q. What is the format of a good SOP?
A. A good SOP should be at least 800-1000 words long. It must consist of the following points: -Academic and personal Background -Why the university matters to you -Your achievements (relevant) -Future goals and ambition
Q. Why do you need SOP for MS in CS?
A. An SOP is a critical part of your university application. It goes beyond your grades and test scores to explain why you wish to pursue an MS in CS. A well-written SOP helps admissions committees understand your background, interests, and future career goals.
Q. Can I use the same SOP for multiple universities?
A. There is no rule that you cannot send the same SOP to multiple universities. But experts recommend you don’t do it. The reason is simple, Universities want to know why you wish to join their university. To answer this question, you must include some key points from the university as supporting statements. A generic SOP won’t make your application stand out.
Q. Should I mention weaknesses or gaps in my history?
A. You can, but it’s not a must. If there are any weaknesses or gaps in your academic or professional history, you can address them in your SOP. But always maintain a positive tone and focus on how you’ve learned and grown from these challenges. Try not to show anything in a negative light.
Q. How important are language and writing style in SOP for MS in CS?
A. English skills in SOP are a vital component of the document. Universities have a good look at your English skills while going through your SOP. It’s important that you make revisions to the SOP, and check for spelling, grammar, language and even plagiarism.
Q. What is the word limit for SOP in USA?
A. Each university has its own word limit. Usually, 800-1000 words is a good length to have. Your SOP should be concise and not overwhelming to the reader. Try not to elaborate on it. Keep it to the point. Generally, it’s best not to exceed 1200 words. Make sure you check with your university about the word limit before you apply.
Q. Should I mention my CGPA in SOP?
A. You can mention your CGPA in the SOP, but remember it’s not mandatory. Your SOP is a place where you can speak about other things rather than your academics. Universities will anyway receive your academic records. If you wish to justify low CGPA, you may do so but try to show it in a positive light. Include how you grew from it and what you learnt.
Q. Can we get visa without SOP?
A. Typically, SOP is required in visa applications, and more so in your university applications. SOP for a visa is slightly different, as you must clarify your intentions, and it does not have to be specific to the university. You must also make your intentions clear to return to the country after completing your studies.
Q. Can I use a creative or unconventional format for my SOP?
A. Many universities appreciate creativity. However, it is risky and cannot remain true for all university applications. While some universities appreciate your creative spirit, others react poorly. It is safer to stick to the standard format. You will get plenty of other opportunities to show your creativity.

Who is Eligible to Apply?
If you have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale, you may apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).
A master's degree is not required to apply for a PhD at Yale, although some programs give preference to applicants with post-baccalaureate training. Consult your program of interest directly for information on how it evaluates applications.
We value diversity of all kinds at the Graduate School, and we encourage students from all backgrounds to apply if Yale is a good fit for your intellectual and professional goals. All are welcome to apply, without regard to citizenship or immigration status, socioeconomic level, race, religion, gender identification, sexual orientation, disability, etc.

You will need to provide the following with your application for admission:
- A statement of academic purpose. You will find the prompt for the statement of purpose in our Application Question FAQs .
- A list of all the prior colleges or universities you have attended, accompanied by unofficial transcripts from each school. Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded with your application. Official or paper transcripts are not needed at this time.
- Three letters of recommendation. Enter the names of your recommenders directly in the application, and they will receive a link to upload a letter on your behalf.
- $105 application fee or fee waiver.
- Standardized tests . GRE requirements vary by program. TOEFL or IELTS are necessary for most non-native English speakers.
- Resume/CV .
- Some programs have additional requirements, such as a writing sample . You can find information about any specific requirements on the program's website.
Where Do I Begin?
Decide if you will apply for a PhD or a terminal Master’s (MA, MS) in one of the programs available at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences . (Note that you will earn one or more Master's degrees en route to a PhD) Learn about the program: its faculty, course offerings, and resources. Read the faculty's research publications. If you can identify and articulate why the program is a good fit for you and show how your preparation and interests align well with it, you will have a strong application.
A note to students applying to one of Yale’s professional schools or programs:
- If you are applying for a PhD in Architecture, Environment, Investigative Medicine, Law, Management, Music, Nursing, or Public Health, or for an MS in Public Health, or an MA in Music, be sure to use the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences PhD/Master's application.
- If you are applying for any other degree at one of the University’s professional schools (Art, Architecture, Divinity, Drama, Environment, Global Affairs, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Public Health), visit that school’s website for further instructions. Those programs have separate admissions policies and processes that are administered by the professional schools, not GSAS.
Application deadlines vary by program, so please see Dates and Deadlines for information about your program of interest.
All new students enroll in the fall, and the admissions process begins nearly a year in advance of matriculation.
Some PhD and Master’s degree programs require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Check your program's standardized testing requirement before you apply.
In addition, applicants whose native language is not English may need to take an English Language test (TOEFL or IELTS).
The application for Fall 2024 entry is now available.
Be sure to complete and submit the application before your program's application deadline.
Your application fee or an approved fee waiver, is due upon submission of your application.
Your letters of recommendation do not need to be received before you will be able to submit your application. However, since programs begin reviewing applications shortly after the respective application deadline, please be sure that your letters of recommendation are submitted promptly.
What Happens After I Submit My Application?
The faculty admissions committee in each department and program begins reviewing applications shortly after their application deadline. Led by the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) or Director of Graduate Admissions (DGA), the committee will recommend students for admission to the Graduate School. Once confirmed by the deans of the Graduate School, the admissions office will release final decisions to applicants.
Unlike undergraduate admissions, the admissions office and staff of the Graduate School maintain the application, the application process, and other administrative transactions, but the admissions staff does not review applications or make admissions decisions. That responsibility is handled by the faculty of each department or program.
Most admissions decisions are provided between February and early March. You will receive an email notification when your admissions decision is available.
If you are accepted for admission, you will need to decide if you wish to accept our offer by April 15. We abide by Council of Graduate School's April 15 Resolution , regarding graduate financial support.

Common mistakes students make while writing a statement of purpose for computer science masters
One of the most common mistakes students make while writing a statement of intention for computer science masters is not focusing on their personal goals. Instead, they start the statement with an overly flattering statement about their university and life, which the reader will likely lose interest in when they get to the most important part. Instead, focus on your academic career at the university and avoid providing too much personal information.
Other common mistakes students make while writing a statement of intention for computer science masters include adding false information. While this can seem like a minor mistake, it can end up costing them. Admission offices carefully check every claim on an application, SOP, or letter of recommendation, so be very careful not to misrepresent anything in your statement of purpose. Falsifying any information will not only get you in trouble, but will also get you disqualified for the program.
Make sure the statement is clear and easy to read. Check for errors and grammatical errors before sending it to a university. Sending in a SOP that has spelling or grammar errors will give a negative impression to the admissions panel.
A statement of purpose is an integral part of your application. The selection committee will need it to understand the student and why they should be accepted. This is also a great opportunity to showcase your qualifications and experience, as well as any training you have taken. The statement will also show how well you communicate with others. It could be the difference between an acceptance and a rejection.
A mistake that many students make while writing an SOP is using the same SOP for every university. A student should curate a different SOP for each university. Each SOP should be tailored to the university and the programme they are applying for. This way, it will look well researched and unique.
Another mistake students make while writing a SOP is using too many compliments or admiration. Students should avoid using overly flattering language and refrain from using abbreviations or slangs. It is easy for people to pick up on a fake compliment so try to use a more humble tone.
Students should write their SOP in a clear and concise manner. Ideally, the SOP should be one page long in Times New Roman type size 12. Avoid using overly long sentences or phrases as they are hard to read and are more likely to contain errors.
