What will I learn?
Explore current social issues and understand the challenges faced by vulnerable populations so you can learn how to deliver impactful services, such as counselling and mediation. Build strong clinical skills that exceed the industry standard for undergraduate education. Learn basic communication competencies to more in-depth therapeutic interventions while gaining the transferable skills to improve lives and change society.
Areas of emphasis (AOE) You may choose to focus on one of two areas of emphasis: Mental Health & Addictions or Youth & Families . You can start taking AOE courses as early as your first year (winter semester). For graduation, you will declare the AOE in your third year, heading into your final year of studies.
1 st year Focus on understanding human behaviour and issues related to individuals, families and groups.
2 nd year Engage in theoretical and practical studies in counselling, ethical and professional issues, and working with various client populations.
3 rd /4 th years Work with diverse groups and learn theory and techniques in areas such as family therapy, case management and crisis intervention. If you’re interested in research, you may complete an undergraduate thesis project in your 4 th year with the support of a CSS faculty member.
Mental health education During your studies, you have an opportunity to complete the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Mental Health First Aid Certification at no additional cost.
Clinical focus With many courses in counselling for different populations, our program has a distinct clinical focus. Your toolkit for social services work. Graduate with important skills in social services—how to listen, how to support someone, understanding boundaries, professionalism, cultural awareness, compassion, global citizenship and self-care.
Global issues Grab the opportunity to strengthen your research, analytical, communication, critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills through the investigation of historical and contemporary international issues related to social justice in the Leadership & Advocacy for Global Issues course. The course includes participation in an international conference!
Get registered In your final semester, apply for registration as a Social Service Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
Social services work vs. social work
It’s important to understand that there is a difference between a Social Service Worker and Social Worker. Our program grants you an Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Community Social Services (BASc). This means you will be educated in social service work and can get registered as a Social Service Worker.
According to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, that regulates these professions:
- Social service workers assist clients in dealing with personal and social problems by delivering counselling, community services and social support programs.
- Social workers collaborate with their clients to address challenges through a process of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation.

3 rd Year, Fall/ Winter: Gain in-depth experience with various agency functions by interacting with staff, volunteers, clients and the community
4 th Year, Fall/ Winter: Solidify your knowledge and skills in client services as you prepare for a career in social services or post-graduate education

2024 Transfer Applicant Guide

Transfer pathways
If you have any postsecondary education and you wish to apply to the University of Guelph-Humber, then you are a Transfer Applicant.
College block credit transfer pathway
Our college block credit transfer pathways allow you to move seamlessly with your college diploma into our honours degree program. We offer full-time and part-time programs for applicants eligible for our College Block Credit Transfer Pathway.
If you are in your final year of diploma completion, or have a completed diploma, in one of the recognized Ontario college two- or three-year diplomas listed below (or equivalent) with a minimum cumulative average of low to mid-70s, you are eligible for block transfer credit.
Recognized diplomas :
- Addiction and Mental Health Worker (AMHW): 5.0 transfer credits *
- Child and Youth Care (CYC): 10.0 transfer credits
- Developmental Services Worker (DSW): 10.0 transfer credits
- Social Service Worker (SSW): 10.0 transfer credits
* Centennial College graduates with an Addiction & Mental Health Worker diploma may receive 10.0 transfer credits (equivalent to two years of study) based on diploma equivalency.
Applicants with a CYC, DSW or SSW diploma will not have placements in their UofGH program plan because those requirements are fulfilled by the completion of the diploma.
Please refer to www.ocswssw.org for details on other diploma equivalences. If you are applying with a recognized diploma from outside of Ontario, you will be required to submit a professional portfolio to demonstrate your prior learning and experience. Guidelines for the portfolio will be emailed to you and noted on your WebAdvisor account after applying. The portfolio includes a resumé, philosophy statement and references.
Full-time study on campus:
- Attend classes on campus in Toronto
- Study in fall and winter semesters
- Our full-time program is available to all block credit transfer applicants
- Complete your degree in two years if you receive 10.0 transfer credits
- If you do not receive credit for prior placement, you will complete close to 800 hours of workplace experience
- Start fall 2024
Part-time study fully online:
- Only applicants that have a CYC, DSW or SSW diploma (or recognized equivalent) can apply for our online part-time program
- Flexibility of online study anywhere with an internet connection
- All courses are online
- Students in the online program have fulfilled their placement hours through their admission requirements and do not have placement as part of the program
- Take courses fall, winter and summer to complete the program in two and a half years
General transfer applicants
If you have postsecondary education and are not eligible as a College Block Credit Transfer applicant, you are considered a General Transfer Applicant. As a General Transfer Applicant, you can only apply to our full-time on-campus program.
Coming from a diploma program If you have completed coursework or a diploma from a college diploma program (not considered for block credit), you must have a minimum cumulative average of low to mid-70s to be considered for admission.
Coming from a degree program If you have completed a degree or degree-related coursework from a recognized college or university program, you must have a minimum cumulative average of 70% to be considered for admission.
If you enter the Community Social Services full-time program as a General Transfer Applicant, it is important to know that you cannot transfer into the part-time online program at a later date as you will not have the placement and courses required for admission to the program.

- Applying to full-time: Students with the block credit diplomas (listed above) that will receive 10.0 transfer credits, refer to the "2 years".
- Students that will receive less than 10.0 transfer credits, refer to "2 years+".
- Applying to part-time online (with a block credit diploma), see respective link/button below.
General transfer students and block credit students with less than 10 credits will have placement requirements. Block credit transfer students who have received 10 transfer credits for their diplomas will not be required to complete placement as their diploma already fulfills that requirement towards their degree.
