Paper squishies are a fun craft to make with your kids! Here is a full tutorial on how to make a paper squishy exactly.

If you had a craft project lined up for your next craft session, then just shelf it. Trust me, because this DIY is definitely worth it. You’re going to make… paper squishies!

Can you imagine a world without squishies? They’re super cute, squiggly, puffy, squishy, and the best part? On top of it, super easy to make!

They’re also a great craft activity for kids and can keep them occupied for hours playing with them. So, if you have kids you can rope them into making a ton of these DIY paper squishies!

Supplies You’ll Need for Paper Squishies

First, take a look at all the supplies you’ll need to make your paper squishy.

• 2x colored paper sheets
• White paper
• Black marker
• Transparent tape
• Toy filling
• Small plastic bag (optional)

Once you’ve gathered them all, you can lay them out on your work table and read ahead to find out how to make paper squishies!

How Do You Make Paper Squishies

The biggest challenge with making these DIY squishies? It’s having to choose your drawing or design. You’ve got a ton of adorable cartoon characters to choose from.

Alternatively, you can keep it simple and pick out inanimate objects.

On your colored paper, draw or trace your design with a marker. If you would rather not spend time drawing your design, you can easily download a pattern you love and print it.

If, however, you plan to draw it yourself, you’ve got a ton of room to be as creative as you like! Use different colored pens to make your drawing as colorful and creative as you can!

Take another sheet of paper and draw outlines of the body and ears of your cartoon character. Cut the drawn pattern out with a pair of scissors and set it aside for now.

Once you are done designing your cartoon drawing, carefully cut out the outline. Also cut out the back of the pattern and set aside.

Grab the smaller cutouts you’d set aside earlier and stick it on to the main component, as seen below.

This next step will require a little more effort, but it’s still pretty fun! Grab a roll of scotch. You’ll be covering the entire cutout with strips of tape from head to toe, as seen below.

Don’t worry about the ends, you can always tuck them in later. You will, however, need to watch out for any gaps between the tape.

So keep in mind that it’s vital you stick each strip as close together as possible to avoid any wrinkles and tears in the paper.

Speaking of wrinkles, also try to smoothen out any possible creases and air bubbles under the tape. Laying the cut out flat on a table and taping it in place will help you eliminate these issues.

Just remember to leave the bottom of the paper squishy uncovered. You’ll need that hole to stuff your toy filling inside it.

When you’re taping the area around the ears, carefully tuck the tape into the nooks as close to the paper as possible.

Repeat this process once again for the back of the squishy, taping the cutout you’d set aside earlier. Tuck the ends of the tape as you go.

When you’re done with step 8, grab your bag of stuffing. You can place the stuffing into a plastic bag and stuff it into the squishy or just scoop the bits into the squish as is.

The trick is to only use as much of the stuffing as required, and not overstuff it. It might be tempting to have a really squishy and cuddly squishy toy.

But remember that this DIY squishy is made from paper and is not as durable as, say, a plastic squishy.

Once you’ve stuffed the squishy, it’s time to tape the ends shut. Carefully line the end of the paper with scotch tape, with the tape sticking out, as seen below.

Then tuck them into each other and seal the tape in a neat fold.

There you go! Your paper squishy is all done! I just bet your kids are going to love playing with it. They can also help you make these squishies!

Instructions

• Grab your craft or construction paper, a marker, tape, and a pair of scissors to get started.
• Either draw your cartoon squishy or download and print a pattern online. You should also cut out the back of the cartoon squishy in the same outline.
• Draw and cut out the different parts of the cartoon—like the ears and the belly. Don’t forget the eyes, nose and mouth!
• Once you’ve cut out the different components, it’s time to tape the entire squishy in place using clear scotch tape. Be extra careful around the ears and other tricky corners!
• Leave the ends of the cutting open—you will be stuffing the squishy through this gap.
• You can stuff the squishy as is, or fill a small plastic bag with it and shove it into the gap you left open.
• Finally, tape the opening close and carefully secure the tape in place to fasten off. Your squishy is ready!

I’ve had some great guest bloggers before, but today, I have two very, EXTRA special guest bloggers. I’d like to introduce my daughter and her friend Grace. Today, these girls are going to explain (in their own words) how to make a paper squishy.

These small squishies are 3D and a fun way to brighten a room or make a space feel creative. When we first made squishies, we liked them so much that we made many more squishies with different designs. The first time we made squishies we tried to replicate Christmas ornaments in the shape of artists. From there, we made many other shapes and designs of squishies such as animals, food, and symbols like letters, hearts, or flags.

A tutorial written for kids by kids! 

Today, these girls are going to explain (in their own words) how to make a paper squishy. As a summer project, I tasked them with writing their first blog post.

They have done the work to create the images in this post, write the content and help me put it all together. This post is about the girls, so I’ll leave them to do the rest. I hope you enjoy their tutorial on how to make a paper squishy!

How to Make a Paper Squishy

We hope you enjoy this blog post and that you are inspired to make your own paper squishies of unique designs. These small squishies are 3D and a fun way to brighten a room or make a space feel creative. Many kids who are not interested in art would also love this project because they are creating something that they can hold and is tactile, not only a 2D piece of paper. These squishies can be decorations or fun toys. Making squishies is super fun and easy and a great way to keep kids entertained when they are bored. We loved this project because the squishies are very fun and artsy and such a creative project. 

We love making squishies. Below, we’ll show you how to make them, along with a little help from our friends!

How to Make Paper Squishies Step-by-Step

Materials: 

• White paper
• Markers, crayons, or colored pencils 
• Regular tape
• Packing tape (if possible) 

Draw a figure on half of your paper. Draw it big enough to cut out later. 

Add details to your drawing. 

Color in your figure and then outline the details with a sharpie. 

Fold the paper in half so you have two sides to cut the squishy. 

Cut out the figure so you have two identical shapes for the front and back of your squishy. 

Tape three sides of your squishy with clear tape, but leave one side open so you can stuff your squishy. 

Stuff your squishy with white craft stuffing. 

*Tip: If you don’t have white craft stuffing you can also use other things like shredded paper, plastic grocery bags, etc.

Tape the side of your squishy that is open so that all sides are closed. 

Finally, tape over the rest of your squishy. If you can, use packing tape for this step because it is clear. If you can’t regular tape is okay.

In this tutorial, I taught you how to make 3 squashy models and I left the patterns for you, of course, after learning all the points that I teach you in this video, you can make any squashy model that you want.

Squishy is a soft and beautiful toy for children and its structure is such that it returns to its original shape after we push it. Squash material made of paper that is glued on it so that it does not tear.

You need the following tools to make a squashy Colored paper or your favorite printed design on paper Adhesive tape (wide and narrow) Doll making fibers (if you do not have fibers, you can use cotton, paper towels, or plastic, but not as good as fibers) scissor To make a squashy better, make it bigger. Of course, not so big that you can not play with it.

Step 1: ​Items Needed:

Colored paper

Pen or pencil

Step 2: Step 1

First of all, you have to draw your desired design on paper. In the first model, the design of the smiley face or the same emoji is used.

Then cut around the work with scissors.

Step 3: Step 2

In this step of making squashy with paper, draw your desired design on the circles. If you use magic like the picture below, it is better to put a piece of paper under your hand so that the surface under your hand does not become colored.

Step 4: Step 3

Now you need to cover the entire surface of the design with duct tape. For convenience, it is better to use a wide tape.

Step 5: Step 3

Now, fill the open space in the squash with cotton fibers. You can also use paper towels or plastic for this purpose. Note that the squash should not be filled too much or too little.

I’m so happy when cutesy crafts are back in trend. That means that I can take out all of my Sanrio bits and play with them to my heart’s content. To top it all, making paper squishy can’t be easier or cheaper to create. But, where to begin?

Here are some things other people on the internet are making. Hopefully, these 12 homemade paper squishy ideas will inspire you to make something cute as well. 

1. Keep it squishy, keep it simple

Any square piece of paper can become a paper squishy. Since their purpose is to be anti-stress toys, any design that brings you joy will be a great choice. 

And you don’t have to go the kawaii route (no matter what the rest of the list may imply). Put some random doodles together or even cut out a magazine or wallpaper. As long as you like it, it’s perfect.

Am I trying to say that anything looks good once you slap Hello Kitty on it, or am I informing you that the food packaging paper squishes are very popular? Yes, to both!

Reproducing the packaging for your favorite snacks is a great place to start this journey since they are usually square or rectangular. And if you’re not too happy with the results, slap a few Hello Kitty stickers and call it a day.

Here’s an easy way to level up without making your life complicated. You can cut out any drawing and turn it into a paper squishy. If you can’t draw, simply print out whatever image takes your fancy. 

When going this route, make sure you’re using a smaller piece of foam than the one you would use in a rectangular shape of the same size. You may need to do some shaping as well for certain designs. 

4. A la mode

Why would you make a simple round paper squishy when you can make a squishy cherry pie? 

A round paper squishy can be made with either 2 or 3 pieces of paper, depending on how simple you want the design and process to be. But once you learn how to do it, you have a whole list of desserts you can reproduce. If you don’t like pie, how about a chocolate Swiss roll?

5. Unisquish

Another big trend amongst the squishmakers is unicorns. There are 2 ways to make these. The first is to cut out the shape as in the third entry, then glue the horns flat for better structure. 

The other is to add the horn separately. You can either sandwich it between main pieces or glue it to the front. You can also use this opportunity to play with texture and materials. In any case, have fun!

6. So cute, it will give you cavities

If my dentist gave me one of these after every visit, I would not hate him as much. Anyway, this made the list to show that not all designs have to be candy or teddy bears, but can also be a sweet… tooth.

8. A refreshing drink

It may seem like it’s a bit complicated for an absolute beginner, but you can achieve this effect by only wrapping the foam in paper instead of enclosing it from all sides. And simply insert a regular straw on top and you’re done. The trick is to make the paper slightly shorter than the foam, so the top and bottom parts appear fuller and therefore rounder. 

Oh, and this idea will work with any drink, it doesn’t have to be Boba. A complicated Starbucks drink with a misspelled name, anyone?

9. For the bold

Admit it, you always wanted to do this to a bag of Doritos. Especially if the person who owns that bag earned your ire. But what should you do if you can’t yield to the temptation because the owner might come for payback? 

In that case, make a squishy paper of Doritos and fulfill your fantasies without getting into trouble.

This one is a bit more challenging since you will have to spend a bit more time constructing the paper pockets. But it’s worth it.

13. Using Balloon

One of the easiest ways to make a paper squishy is by using a balloon. Cut out a piece of paper in the shape that you want your squishy to be, and then use a glue stick to attach it to the balloon. Once the glue has dried, blow up the balloon and tie off the end. Then, cut a small hole in the top of the balloon and release the air until your squishy is as desired.

14. Pillowcase

Another great way to make a paper squishy is by using an old pillowcase. Cut out two pieces of paper in the shape that you want your squishy to be, and then use hot glue or fabric glue to attach them together. Next, put your hand inside of the pillowcase and scrunch it up. Once the glue has dried, cut a small hole in the top of the pillowcase and release the air until your squishy is as desired.

15. Sleeping Bag

If you want to make a really large paper squishy, you can use an old sleeping bag or quilt. Cut out two pieces of paper in the shape that you want your squishy to be, and then use hot glue or fabric glue to attach them together. Next, put your hand inside of the sleeping bag or quilt and scrunch it up. Once the glue has dried, cut a small hole in the top of the sleeping bag or quilt and release the air until your squishy is as desired.

How to make Homemade Squishies that are Slow Rising

My kids have been asking me how to make homemade squishies for ages.. and not just any hold homemade squishies but SLOW RISING Homeamde Squishies. Ha. And oh.. not just homemade squishies that are slow rising.. but also that are easy (and of course) inexpensive to make. Ha. Not asking for much.. are they. So I decided to investigate what different types of DIY SqushieIdeas are out there. The answer, if I am honest is not so straight forward, but DIY squihies ARE possible, providing you are willing to compromise.

DIY Squishies makes a great Fidget Toys. You can design them any way you wish and play with them to your heart’s content. I think our favourite are the paper squishies as they are so “accessible” to all. All you need is paper, stuffing (recycled!), markers and tape… and off you go! Lots of fun and kudos with the kids. A great craft activity for a rainy afternoon.

On my site.. by far the most popular homemade squishy craft is the PAPER Squishy. Of course, it isn’t anywhere near as exciting as a shop bought one.. however, the videos have been watched 100,000s of times between them and I know many a child who has made them and enjoyed both the process and the result. And they most definitely fall into the thrifty category..

We have also had great success recycling candy wrappers and crisp packets. They are super fun to make.. only take minutes.. look realistic and are a fun way to recycle! So do watch out for those homemade squishies.

Many bloggers and vloggers have had a go at making squishies from sponges (nice and cheap) as well as rising memory foam (a bit more expensive). These types of squishies require a little more dexterity as you essentially SCULPT your spong/ foam into shape.

Finally, you can buy specialist Squishy making kits on Amazon – I haven’t tried these, but they do look fun and would maybe make a great gift!

Enough now.. let’s take a look!

How to make a Squishy from Paper

As mentioned above, the Paper Squishy are the most popular among my “YouTube Kids” as you are literally able to create any design that you wish. I have created a Santa Squishy Printable as well as a Panda Suiqshy Printable for those interested! So all you really need is a sheet of paper, markers and off you go. DIY Paper Squishies are great fun – and kids will love designing their own!

Stock up on printer paper or construction paper in different colours and yourself a stash of clear tape…

• Emoji Squishy (stock up on yellow papers and find a bowl or plate to trace with a pencil for your basic shape)
• Paper Santa Squishy Toy – Red Ted Art (printer paper and markers is all you need)
• Panda Paper Squishy DIY – Red Ted Art

As for stuffing.. you can use old pillow stuffing, an old plastic bag or two or craft foam. We like recycling pillow stuffing best! But love the plastic bag solution too. Thrifty! Don’t go out and buy a bag of stuffing. It really isn’t necessary.

The step instructions are easy to follow and you will see, your kids will quickly be creating their DIY paper squishy designs. From 3d Pizza designs, to kawaii cookies and more! The design opportunities are endless – what different things can your kids come up with?

How to make diy paper squishy?

5. Once the glue is dry, your paper squishy is ready to use!

To make a DIY paper squishy, you’ll need a piece of paper, a pencil, a pen, some scissors, and some double-sided tape. First, trace your hand on the paper using the pencil. Then, cut out the handprint with the scissors. Next, use the pen to draw a face on the paper squishy. Finally, use the double-sided tape to attach the paper squishy to a surface.

How do you make a paper squishy only?

Next, just cut off any excess tape that is left around the edges. Next, I’m taking this piece and folding it in half so that the sticky sides are together. Then, I’m going to cut off the excess tape around the edges again. And finally, I’m going to fold the whole thing in half so that the sticky sides are together and the non-sticky sides are together.

Toilet paper, paper towels, and napkins can all be used to stuff squishies. Just be sure to use a clean and unused squishy, as you don’t want to transfer any germs.

How do you make a homemade squishy

The first method for making squishies is the infamous hito hydrogel. The milky colored one is a two-part mixture that you need to mix together. Once it’s mixed, you can use a mold or your hands to shape it into whatever squishy form you desire. The curing process can take up to 24 hours, so be patient!

How to Make Squishies

Squishies have become very popular recently, and many people collect them. They are cute little toys made of memory foam, and while they don't tend to cost much on their own, starting a whole squish-collection may be expensive. By doing it yourself, you not only save money, but can also customize and add personal touches during the DIY process. In this example we will be using a star, but this method works for any kind of squishy!

Shaping the Squishy

• If you bought a memory foam pillow as your source of memory foam, remove the pillowcase and cut off the rest of the layers until you reach memory foam. Be careful not to cut the memory foam when doing this.
• Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect, but you should at least have some idea of the shape of your squishy. 
• Don't make any details yet. It should look rough and uneven.
• This step may take longer if you are making a complex shape.
• Do not rush this part, or you may accidentally snip off too much. Remember, you can always snip off a bit more, but you can't put anything back.
• You don't have to smoothen any curves or angles, but it does help to make it look much more squishy and soft.
• Remember that when smoothing out curves, the more little cuts you give it, the nicer it will look.

Adding the Design

• Paint the squishy in any way you'd like. You can add patterns, solid colors, or designs.

We’re Disconnected and Lonely. David Brooks Has a Solution.

My name is David Brooks, and I am a New York Times columnist. I tend to write about politics, sociology, culture, morality, all the soft and squishy stuff.

If you ever saw that movie “Fiddler on the Roof”—

You have a pleasant daughter.

I have five pleasant daughters. Ah.

— you know how huggy and warm and emotional Jewish families can be.

And this is mine, and this is mine, and this is mine.

And so I grew up in the other kind of Jewish family. The culture around my household was, think Yiddish, act British. And so we were stiff upper lip types. And I don’t know if it was nature or nurture, but I grew up somewhat aloof. I was not a guy who was necessarily intimately involved with others. My nursery school teacher told my parents, apparently, David doesn’t always play with the other kids. He just observes them, which was great for my life as a journalist, but maybe not great for having strong bonds and intimate connections.

And there’s one thing that happened to me about 10 years ago that, to me, symbolizes a whole way of life. I’m a big baseball fan. And so I’m in Baltimore with my youngest son, and the batter loses control of the bat.

It slips out of his hands, and it lands in my lap in the stands.

And getting a foul ball is not nearly 1,000 times as good as getting a bat. And so any normal human being would have stood up, jumped up and down, high-fived everybody, hugged everybody, been on the jumbotron. I just put the bat on the ground, and I stared stoically straight ahead. And I look back on that guy, and I think, show a little joy. I wasn’t an emotionally open person. When anything really good or really bad would happen to me, I would just go numb to zero. So I wasn’t really great at expressing emotions. And so it became a cause for me to try to become a more fuller human being.

And so I went off on something of a four-year personal mission. I started work on a book, which is out now, called “How to Know a Person, The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen.” The paradox was this. I was hopefully on a journey to becoming more emotionally open and hopefully kinder and more considerate. American society was on a journey to become less human, more cruel, more angry, more bitter.

So there’s all these terrible social statistics of rising depression rates, rising suicide rates. The number of people who say they have no close personal friends has quadrupled, declines in happiness. So we’re in the middle of some social and emotional breakdown. And it’s because we’re not good at the act of being a considerate person in the daily circumstances of life to each other. And so I found this, as a journalist, I just see this epidemic of invisibility, of rural people who feel that coastal people don’t see them, of Republicans and Democrats looking at each other in blind incomprehension.

And so I’ve concluded that in these bitter and hard, and sometimes, cruel times, the right thing to do is to double down on being a defiant humanist. It’s to double down and say, I will not be calloused over. I’m going to double down on spending as much time as I can, as effectively I can, and seeing another person, in trying to understand their point of view, and trying to make them feel seen, heard, and understood.

I’ve learned that’s a moral posture. You’ve got to be able to say, I’m going to pay more attention to you than I am to myself. But it also requires skills. And one of them is, treat attention as an on/off switch, not a dimmer. If you’re in conversation, you should be paying 100 percent attention or 0 percent, but not 60 percent.

Another is be a loud listener. You should be listening so actively to people, you’re burning calories. Like, I have a buddy named Andy, and when I talk to him, he’s like one of those congregations of a Pentecostal church. He’s like, uh-huh, yeah. Uh-huh, uh-huh. Preach, preach, preach. Just love talking to that guy. He’s a loud listener.

Another is, keep the gem statement in the center. If my brother and I are fighting over our dad’s health care, we may be disagreeing about that, but we both want what’s best for our dad, and that’s the gem statement. If you’re in the middle of a disagreement and you can return to the gem statement, then you preserve the relationship amid your argument. And those are just very practical skills to make you and me better conversationalists.

The fact that these skills don’t come naturally to me as a person was actually useful in me writing the book. In sports, the people who are often the superstar athletes aren’t the best coaches, aren’t the best teachers, because it all comes naturally to them. For people like me, who have some degree of social ineptitude, I have to think about it.

And so for me, even doing this book, it’s become a way of life and shaped the way I am normally. Like normally, I was the guy who, if I’m on a bus or a subway or a plane, I’ve got my headphones in, whether there’s music in it or not, because I’m like, don’t approach me. And now I’m the guy who doesn’t have headphones in. And if somebody seems to want to have a conversation, I’ll do what I never used to do. I’ll have a conversation with a stranger.

On the other hand, I walk into a conversation, and I think I’m going to ask questions. I’m going to be the curious one. I’m going to make them the center of attention. Then I have a couple of glasses of wine, and I start telling funny stories about myself. And then I leave very disappointed that Mr. Ego took control.

On the journey to being a full human being, maybe I’ll give myself a B minus. So I know what to do. Like, I know how humans operate a lot better than I used to. And I’m proof that no matter how old you are, you can change.
