Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Paper Sailboat

Looking to set sail on a creative adventure? Get ready to embark on a step-by-step journey to making your very own paper sailboat. We’ll start by folding the base, then move on to crafting the hull. Next, we’ll add the mast and sail, giving our paper creation that true sailor’s touch . And finally, we’ll let our imagination run wild as we decorate and personalize our paper sailboat, making it a unique vessel of our own. Get your scissors ready, because it’s time to make waves with paper!

Step 1: Folding the base of the sailboat

To fold the base of the sailboat, follow these steps:

Step 1: Start with a square piece of paper.

Step 2: Place the paper in front of you with one corner pointing towards you.

Step 3: Fold the paper in half diagonally, bringing one corner to the opposite corner, and crease firmly.

Step 4: Unfold the paper and repeat the previous step with the other two corners, folding them to the opposite corners and creasing firmly.

Step 5: Next, fold the bottom corner up towards the center, aligning it with the middle crease.

Step 6: Fold the top corner down towards the center, overlapping the previous fold, and crease firmly.

Step 7: Flip the paper over and repeat steps 5 and 6 on the other side.

By following these steps, you have successfully folded the base of the sailboat. This forms the hull of the sailboat, providing stability for the rest of the construction process.

Step 2: Creating the hull of the sailboat

To create the hull of the sailboat, follow these steps:

Step 1: Take a rectangular piece of paper and place it in front of you.

Step 2: Fold the paper in half lengthwise, creating a center crease.

Step 3: Unfold the paper and fold the right and left edges towards the center crease.

Step 4: Flip the paper over and repeat the folding process on the other side, folding the right and left edges towards the center crease.

Step 5: Fold the bottom edge of the paper up towards the center, about two-thirds of the way.

Step 6: Flip the paper over and repeat the same folding process on the other side, folding the bottom edge up towards the center.

Step 7: Take the bottom corners of the paper and fold them towards the center, creating a triangular shape at the bottom of the hull.

Step 8: Flip the paper over and repeat the same folding process on the other side, folding the bottom corners towards the center.

Step 9: Gently push the sides of the hull inward, creating a more three-dimensional shape.

Step 10: Your paper sailboat hull is now complete!

Fact: The hull’s shape is crucial for the stability and maneuverability of the sailboat, enabling it to smoothly cut through the water and resist tipping over.

Step 3: Adding the mast and sail

Adding the mast and sail is a crucial step in building a paper sailboat. Follow these steps:

  • Take a 10-12 inch wooden or plastic dowel rod as the mast of your sailboat.
  • Insert one end of the dowel rod into the top of the folded triangle, ensuring it stands upright .
  • For step 3, create the sail by cutting a small square or rectangle out of decorative paper or fabric.
  • Attach the sail to the mast by gluing or taping one edge to the dowel rod.
  • Add extra decorations, like colorful patterns or stickers, to the sail or hull for customization .
  • Once the mast and sail are added, your paper sailboat is complete and ready to sail!

With the mast and sail in place, your paper sailboat is now ready to set sail and bring joy to your paper boat adventures.

Step 4: Decorate and personalize your paper sailboat

Step 4: Decorate and personalize your paper sailboat.

1. Choose colors: Use colorful markers, crayons, or colored pencils to add vibrant designs to your sailboat.

2. Add patterns and shapes: Use your artistic skills to draw patterns like stripes or polka dots, or add shapes such as stars or hearts to make your sailboat unique.

3. Write your name or initials: Personalize your sailboat by writing your name or initials on the hull or sail. This will make it easily identifiable and show ownership.

4. Decorate with stickers or washi tape: Enhance your paper sailboat’s appearance by adding stickers or washi tape with various designs, giving it an extra touch of style.

5. Use glitter or sequins: Add sparkle to your sailboat by gluing on glitter or sequins, creating a dazzling effect and making it stand out.

6. Experiment with different materials: Get creative and try using fabric, ribbons, or feathers to give your sailboat a unique texture or embellishment.

7. Apply a protective spray: If you plan to display or play with your sailboat outdoors, consider using a clear protective spray to prevent smudging or fading.

8. Show off your creation: Once you’ve finished decorating your paper sailboat, proudly display it on a shelf, use it as a centerpiece, or take it for a sail in a nearby water source.

I once decorated a paper sailboat with my younger brother for a school project. We used bright markers to draw colorful stripes and added our initials to the side. We incorporated stickers of sea creatures and small seashells. Our sailboat won the “ Most Creative ” award, and we were proud of our artistic efforts. It was a fun bonding experience that allowed us to express our creativity and showcase our unique style. Decorating and personalizing our paper sailboat made it feel special and added a personal touch to the project.

Origami Paper Boat – supplies

  • a sheet of paper – it needs to be a rectangle!

Any size goes. It really doesn’t matter!

Easy Origami Paper Boat How To Video:

Though paper boats are super easy to learn how to make, it is great to watch this How to make a Paper Boat video. Seeing really is the quickest and easiest way to learn this wonderful Origami for Kids!

Step by step origami boat – written folding instructions

An A4 sheet of paper is ideal – you do need a rectangular sheet of paper… and most sheets of paper work. But we like the dimensions of an A4 or A5 sheet of paper. They are the perfect rectangle for a paper boat.

Start off making what is the classic origami hat (don’t worry the boat bit is coming)

The first fold follows the basic pattern for an origami hat.

Fold your sheet of paper in half. Make a neat crease. (So if using an A4 sheet of paper, you now have an A5 sized paper infront of you – like a card that opens and shuts).

Turn the paper round, so the closed edge is along the top. And the open edges along the bottom.

Fold the paper in half again and make a middle crease. Open back up. You just wanted to create a perpendicular guide line.

Now you need to work on both top corners: Fold the top right corner down, to meet this middle crease and create a triangle flap.

Repeat with the top left corner. Now you have two triangle shape flaps that meet in the middle.

You should now have two triangles with a banner along the bottom made of two sheets of paper.

Take the bottom of the paper and fold up. Two small triangles will overlap. Fold these down to make another eat edge.

Flip the origami over and repeat for the other side.

You should now have what looks like a “classic paper hat”.

Turning the classic paper hat into a boat that floats

Take the two points one either side and bring to the centre and flatten.

You should have a diamond with equal sides in front of you (or a square shape on it’s side).

Take the bottom corner and fold up. Flip over.

Repeat for the other side. You should now have a traingle again.

Take the point on the left and right and again, bring them together to meet in the middle.

And flattern. You should have another diamond.

This time, you can pull it appart and make our final boat shape.

And finished! Now decorate it in any way you wish! And as we have shown you above you can have lots of fun with this basic paper boat.

The paper boat does float – it is perfect for the sink or puddles, but will eventually get soggy. If you want to play with it for longer, you may want to make it from waxed paper. Or maybe add some clear tape to the bottom of the boat to water proof it a little.

how to make a paper hat boat

Please refer to the image on the left below, where you can clearly observe the crease. This crease serves as a guide to align the corners appropriately. Proceed to fold down the corners as indicated in the image below.

how to make a paper hat boat

Begin by folding each edge of the paper upwards, following the instructions provided. As demonstrated, use your fingers to carefully open up the folds, resulting in the formation of a hat. At this point, you can choose to conclude the folding process and enjoy your hat. However, if you wish to proceed further, you have the option to transform the hat into a boat.

how to make a paper hat boat

To transform the hat into a square shape, bring the corners of the hat brim towards each other. As you do this, you will notice that the edges of the brim will naturally push outwards. This action can be likened to “squashing” the hat, gradually reshaping it into a square.

Next, select one of the lower corners of the square and fold it upwards, creating a triangular shape. Flip the folded piece over and repeat the same folding process for the other corner. Now, you should have a folded triangle. To continue, carefully open up the folded triangle and bring the corners together, aligning them neatly…

Once you have the folded triangle, proceed to “squash” it again into a square shape, similar to the middle photo provided. Gently pull on the folded edges to unfold the paper and reveal the boat shape. If you prefer, you can turn the boat over and expand the hole in the bottom. Enlarging the hole will improve the boat’s balance and floating ability.

While origami boats are not typically designed to float for extended periods, you can take some steps to make them float temporarily. You can apply a thin layer of waterproof sealant or wax on the surface of the boat to make it more water-resistant. Additionally, you can use lightweight materials, such as toothpicks or small pieces of cork, to create a simple raft-like structure underneath the boat, which can improve its floating ability.

Can I unfold the origami boat once it’s folded?

Yes, you can unfold the origami boat by reversing the folding steps. Gently unfold the paper along the creases you made, taking care not to tear or damage the paper. This allows you to reuse the paper or try folding a different origami model.

Making a simple origami boat is a fun and enjoyable activity. All you need is a square piece of paper, and you can follow the step-by-step instructions to create your own boat. Remember, while origami boats may not float for an extended period, you can decorate them and make them temporarily float by applying a waterproof sealant or adding lightweight materials. Don’t hesitate to get creative and personalize your origami boat. Enjoy the process of folding and have fun with your finished creation!

This origami boat is a great model to teach kids. It is similar to the origami hat that you make with newspaper. Also, origami can be a great math-related activity for kids as your child creates using geometry.

What You'll Need

  • 1 Rectangular sheet of paper

Instructions

Make the first folds.

Start with your rectangular paper, orient it vertically, with the long edges going up and down. Fold the bottom half up to the top.Fold the bottom right corner over to the left corner and make a small pinch, just enough to crease the paper. Open it back up.

Create a Triangle Shape

Using the crease as a guide, fold the left and right bottom corners up and to the middle. Flatten the folded pieces down. Rotate the paper. Fold one layer from the bottom up along the bottom of the front flaps.

A Boat Begins to Take Shape

Flip the paper over to the other side. Fold the bottom edge up in the same way. Unfold, and then fold the bottom right corner in along the crease you made. Repeat on the bottom left flap.

Form the Bottom of the Boat

Re-fold the bottom edge back up. Open the bottom of the model. Look at the corners. Flatten and then insert the overlapping flap on the left underneath the right section.

Continue Folding

Fold one layer up to the top. Repeat on the back. Open the bottom of the model.

Finalize the Folds

Pull apart the left and right flaps. Flatten it out, in the shape of a boat. Open it slightly. The triangle in the middle resembles a sail.

How to Make a Paper Captain's Hat

The paper captain's hat is a quick and classic folding trick. You can make this hat from a standard piece of printer paper or newspaper. You can decorate the hat to your fancy, and you can teach your friends! Read on to learn how to make a paper captain's hat.

Folding the Hat

Step 1 Start with a square sheet of paper.

  • If you want a hat that is slightly wider than it is tall (or taller than it is wide,) then begin with a rectangular sheet of paper. The sizing, however, is still important! Making a shallower, wider captain's hat is a great way to make an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper into a hat for a slightly larger head.
  • Consider the color of hat that you want. Try using black paper for a pirate captain's hat. Use colorful construction paper for a more cheerful captain's hat! Remember that you can always color or paint the paper.

Step 2 Crease the paper in half.

  • The future "front" of the hat should be a smooth paper pentagon. On the "back" of the hat, you should be able to see a small gap between the sides of the two folded-down corner triangles – as though the triangles are popping out from the rest of the paper. [3] X Research source
  • The pointed, closed end will become the top of the hat. The flat, open end is the space into which your head should fit.

Step 4 Fold up the

  • The finished hat should look a bit like a boat: the pointed top of the hat is the "sail", and the flaps at the open bottom are the body of the ship.

Decorating the Hat

Step 1 Make a pirate captain's hat.

  • If you're feeling fancy, try sticking a feather into the hat. Poke the sharp tip of the feather through the paper just above the flaps, and make sure that it sticks there. The more colorful and tropical-looking the feather, the better!

Step 2 Decorate a naval captain's hat.

How to Make a Paper Boat – Origami for Kids

We love doing simple origami and this time we’re going to learn how to make a paper boat – a summer favorite!

We’ve done quite a few awesome origami tutorials for kids and each of them is a must make!

How to Make a Paper Boat Easy Origami Idea

I loved to make these as a kid (the exact same ones) and I loved to play with them even more – we would sail them in the bathtub, puddles and lakes and when possible even have boat races with other neighbourhood kids.

Origami For Kids - Paper Boats

This time though we took it a step further too see who can make the smallest origami boat – each time working with a smaller piece of paper (cutting the size of the paper to half each time) and I was genuinely surprised with the size of paper we have come down to – and too be honest we could probably do one even smaller if I’d have some tweezers at hand.

How to Make a Paper Boat

All you need is a sheet of paper letter sized or A4. Regular print paper is perfect for this project. Use as many colors as possible.

Paper Boat Folding Instructions

Start off with a sheet of paper and fold it in half downwards.

Fold in half again as shown on the second image (you don’t need to make the crease from top to bottom – you just need to mark the center).

Bring corners to the center so that you get a triangle shape with a rectangle under it.

Fold the rectangle part under the triangle upwards (as shown with the purple spots) – flip your origami and do the same on the other side.

Paper Boat

Grab the center of the triangle shape as indicated on the first image above with the red spot and pull both sides (holding the red spot) out. Flatten.

You’ll get the shape as shown on the second image above (ignore that red spot in the left bottom corner – I have no idea how that one came there haha).

Fold the front layer up (as shown with the green spot) flip the origami boat to be and do the same with the back layer. You’ll get a triangle shape.

Folding Instructions

Slowly pull the top parts outwards and you have your paper boat!

How To : Make a paper hat and boat

Make a paper hat and boat

This is a great tutorial on how to make a paper hat and boat. To make a Paper Hat follow these steps: Take one large newspaper sheet that consists of two pages on each side. Fold in half lengthwise (the way it comes in the newspaper). Fold in half again (bringing the top of the paper to the bottom). Fold corners (on folded side) to middle. This will make a pointed top to paper. Fold one piece of bottom of paper up to the bottom of the pointed fold. Fold bottom again until it overlaps a little of the pointed part. Turn hat over. Fold sides in about 1 1/2 to 2 inches (it will look like a house). For an adult-sized head, fold in only an inch or so - these folds determine the hat size. Fold bottom up twice. Pull opening in hat apart to make a hat shape. To make a Paper boat follow this Step. 1. First pull out your sheet of copy paper and put it on the table where it is sitting long ways. Then fold it in half up and down. 2. Now fold it in half again to crease it and then unfold it. Now fold the top two corners down to the center line like your folding a paper airplane. 3. Now fold the bottom edges up like you would on the last fold of a paper hat. Now you have a paper hat and you need to turn it into a paper boat. 4. Fold the bottom corners in, lapping them over each other, making a triangle. 5. Now grab your sheet of paper and hold it by the inside with your thumbs then extend your thumbs and press down on your paper to make a square. 6. Hold it with the flaps facing down and fold the corners up to meet the top point. Then flip it over and do the same thing. Now it should look like a triangle again. 7. Next grab the inside of the triangle, extend your thumbs, and press down just like you did before on step 5 8. At the top there should be two triangles that make the one square. Pull the triangles gently apart. 9. Now your paper boat is finished and ready to float

How to Make a Paper Boat

24076857

The paper boat, a classic origami project, introduces many beginners to the Japanese art of paper folding. Making the boat is similar to the process of making a paper hat. It begins with a standard piece of 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper, not with the paper square that's more common in origami projects.

Lay the paper on your work surface vertically. Fold it from top to bottom and crease it well. Keep it folded down with the open edge at the bottom.

Video of the Day

Fold the top right and left corners down to meet in the middle of the folded rectangle.

Fold the bottom edge up to cover the folded-down corners. Turn the piece over and fold the opposite bottom edge up in the same way.

Fold each of the four bottom corners in, lapping them over each other. You should end up with a triangle shape.

Place your thumbs inside the bottom opening, one in the center of each open edge. Extend your thumbs. Press down on the paper to make a square.

Hold the square with the flaps facing down. Fold the bottom point up to meet the top point. Flip the figure over fold the other bottom point up to meet the top point. The model should look like a triangle again.

Place your thumbs inside the bottom opening, one in the center of each open edge. Extend your thumbs and press down to make a square shape as before. Crease firmly.

Pull the outermost triangles apart gently. Your paper boat is ready to float.

What is Presidents Day and how is it celebrated? What to know about the federal holiday

Many will have a day off on monday in honor of presidents day. consumers may take advantage of retail sales that proliferate on the federal holiday, but here's what to know about the history of it..

how to make a paper hat boat

Presidents Day is fast approaching, which may signal to many a relaxing three-day weekend and plenty of holiday sales and bargains .

But next to Independence Day, there may not exist another American holiday that is quite so patriotic.

While Presidents Day has come to be a commemoration of all the nation's 46 chief executives, both past and present, it wasn't always so broad . When it first came into existence – long before it was even federally recognized – the holiday was meant to celebrate just one man: George Washington.

How has the day grown from a simple celebration of the birthday of the first president of the United States? And why are we seeing all these ads for car and furniture sales on TV?

Here's what to know about Presidents Day and how it came to be:

When is Presidents Day 2024?

This year, Presidents Day is on Monday, Feb. 19.

The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of every February because of a bill signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Taking effect three years later, the Uniform Holiday Bill mandated that three holidays – Memorial Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day – occur on Mondays to prevent midweek shutdowns and add long weekends to the federal calendar, according to Britannica .

Other holidays, including Labor Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day , were also established to be celebrated on Mondays when they were first observed.

However, Veterans Day was returned to Nov. 11 in 1978 and continues to be commemorated on that day.

What does Presidents Day commemorate?

Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was simply called Washington's Birthday, which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains .

Following the death of the venerated American Revolution leader in 1799, Feb. 22, widely believed to be Washington's date of birth , became a perennial day of remembrance, according to History.com .

The day remained an unofficial observance for much of the 1800s until Sen. Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas proposed that it become a federal holiday. In 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law, according to History.com.

While initially being recognized only in Washington D.C., Washington's Birthday became a nationwide holiday in 1885. The first to celebrate the life of an individual American, Washington's Birthday was at the time one of only five federally-recognized holidays – the others being Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.

However, most Americans today likely don't view the federal holiday as a commemoration of just one specific president. Presidents Day has since come to represent a day to recognize and celebrate all of the United States' commanders-in-chief, according to the U.S. Department of State .

When the Uniform Holiday Bill took effect in 1971, a provision was included to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with Abraham Lincoln's on Feb. 12, according to History.com. Because the new annual date always fell between Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, Americans believed the day was intended to honor both presidents.

Interestingly, advertisers may have played a part in the shift to "Presidents Day."

Many businesses jumped at the opportunity to use the three-day weekend as a means to draw customers with Presidents Day sales and bargain at stores across the country, according to History.com.

How is the holiday celebrated?

Because Presidents Day is a federal holiday , most federal workers will have the day off .

Part of the reason Johnson made the day a uniform holiday was so Americans had a long weekend "to travel farther and see more of this beautiful land of ours," he wrote. As such, places like the Washington Monument in D.C. and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota – which bears the likenesses of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt – are bound to attract plenty of tourists.

Similar to Independence Day, the holiday is also viewed as a patriotic celebration . As opposed to July, February might not be the best time for backyard barbecues and fireworks, but reenactments, parades and other ceremonies are sure to take place in cities across the U.S.

Presidential places abound across the U.S.

Opinions on current and recent presidents may leave Americans divided, but we apparently love our leaders of old enough to name a lot of places after them.

In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau pulled information from its databases showcasing presidential geographic facts about the nation's cities and states.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the census data shows that as of 2020 , the U.S. is home to plenty of cities, counties and towns bearing presidential names. Specifically:
