How to Research a Company Before Your Interview
An interview is a two-way conversation. You’re interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. It’s helpful to do a little background research to have an understanding of the company’s values, employee satisfaction, company ratings and reviews. Armed with basic knowledge prepares you for a professional interview.
Company Website
Begin your research by looking up the company’s website on the Internet. Read through the home page introduction and get a grasp of the company culture. If there are press releases or news article links, get as much info as you can by skimming through them. Has the company won awards? Look through photos on the website to see the business environment and what the office looks like. You’ll have an idea of what to expect before you walk in the door.
Products and Services
Find out the types of products or services the company provides. Read product ratings and reviews online to see if clients or customers are happy with them. Research details on any products so you’ll know what you’re talking about in the interview. This can give you the upper hand on landing the job over another candidate. Try to find online blogs where customers have made comments stating their opinions. Since opinions can vary, read as many reviews and blogs as possible to get a general idea.
Social Media
Social media is a great way to get the scoop on a company. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to get updates. The image and brand should be evident on the social media platforms. You’ll want to be sure their culture is something that works for you. Scroll through posts and photos, comments by followers and see if there’s a consistent theme.
LinkedIn is a valuable resource to view the profile of the company and the leadership. You might find some connections in their network that you know. If you recognize someone, email them through LinkedIn to gather info on types of jobs, promotions, new hires and company stats. If you see high turnover, it could be a red flag that employees aren’t content. Find the organizational chart to see who the key players are in the company.
Talk to people you know to see what their impressions are of the company. Find current and former employees and contact them if possible through email or a phone call. An email is less invasive, but they might be less likely to give details in writing. Ask questions about management styles, employee satisfaction and general office dynamics. Once you have all your research and homework complete, you’ll be confident for the interview.
