What Do You Learn On a First Aid at Work Course?

first aid at work course outline

First aid course content

First aid training can be the difference between life and death when accidents happen in the workplace. If you’re an Appointed Person, and you are keen to learn what to do in an emergency situation, taking a First Aid at Work course is likely to be on your to-do list. But what do these courses actually teach you? In our latest blog, our HSE experts outline the usual course content, as well as explaining how material differs between courses.

What do you learn when taking a first aid course? A general first aid at work course will cover the basics of first aid, which include:

  • Performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Safely using a defibrillator (AED)
  • Dressing wounds & burns
  • Stopping & controlling bleeding
  • RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences)
  • Accident management & when to call emergency services

Read on to find out more about what a First Aid at Work course entails, what you can do to prepare for taking one, and other common first aid FAQs.

What Does a First Aid Course Entail?

First aid courses cover a range of life-saving content that can be applied to many types of workplaces, from general office buildings to warehouses, factories, and construction sites. Below, we’ve outlined some of the areas that your First Aid at Work course is likely to cover:

Basic First Aid Techniques

Any first aid course will teach necessary basic skills to prepare you for becoming a first aider. The course teaches you how to dress wounds and burns, and stop bleeding. It will also outline how to deal with minor illnesses such as nose bleeds, dizziness, and muscular strains. The course should cover what to do when someone is choking, having difficulty breathing, and at what point emergency services should be called.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

Whilst most people have seen CPR performed in films or TV shows, the technique requires formal training in order to perform the procedure correctly. Your tutor will cover how regular chest compressions should be, how deep they should go, and how many to give between breaths. The first aid course will also cover when you should use CPR, as the technique can cause more harm than good if carried out when not necessary. When you attend an-in person course, you may also learn how to use a defibrillator (AED).

First Aid Kits

A first aid course won’t just cover advanced techniques, but it will also cover the basics, too. This includes first aid kits, which are a legal requirement for employers to have in every workplace. The course will teach you how to use the kit contents properly, and safely. Depending on which course you choose and your workplace requirements, you may learn how to use a trauma first aid kit, or other specialist or industry-specific medical equipment.

RIDDOR, also known as the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations ( 2013 ), puts employers and Appointed Persons in charge of accurately reporting workplace accidents and other potentially dangerous occurrences. Your course will cover exactly what types of accidents fall under RIDDOR, as well as how to accurately document, assess, and report an incident. Accurate reporting will help to keep employers accountable for health and safety procedures put in place.

Accident Management

The First Aid at Work course will teach you how to assess an accident, so you’ll gain a better understanding of at what point you should call emergency services to the scene. The course will also teach you how to manage the scene of an accident should it happen.

If you are an appointed person, you need to have the skills to delegate tasks in order to manage the injury effectively and without delay. This may look like you performing CPR, and having someone else call emergency services, whilst someone else clears the car park to make room for the ambulance.

How Long Is a First Aid at Work Course?

To become a fully qualified first aider, you need hands-on classroom training with a minimum of 18 contact hours. Due to this, in-person courses usually take place over three days. Online courses are a great starting point if you don’t have three days to spare as they are typically shorter. The online First Aid at Work course can be completed at your own pace, usually taking between two and two and a half hours.

How Are You Assessed When Taking a First Aid at Work Course?

How you are assessed will vary depending on the course you take, and the training provider that you choose. If you are attending an in-person course over a day or few days, you will be assessed through observations, questions from your tutor, and how well you do practically. Some course providers however may require you to take an exam at the end of your training.

If you choose to take the online First Aid at Work course with HSE Docs, you’ll simply be assessed with a multiple choice Q&A at the end of each module, giving you a chance to solidify your understanding as soon as module content has been covered. There are three modules in our online course, so there are three multiple-choice exams in total.

How Should You Prepare For a First Aid Course?

When you attend an in-person first aid course, it is likely that you will be required to practice CPR, which requires kneeling on the floor, or other medical procedures, which will include moving around. Because of the hands-on nature of a first aid course, we’d suggest wearing comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement, as well as sensible, flat-bottomed footwear.

We’d also recommend getting involved as much as you can when you attend the course - be the first to volunteer for demonstrations and try out techniques. Another great way to solidify your knowledge and understanding is to ask questions. By doing so, you’ll leave the course feeling confident that you know everything that is required, and you may also help out some of your quieter classmates in the process.

First Aid at Work FAQs

If you have any questions about First Aid at Work, explore our FAQs below. Alternatively, if you have any questions about our online courses and documents, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.

Do You Legally Have To Have a First Aider at Work?

Having an Appointed Person, formally trained in First Aid at Work, is a legal requirement if you work in a high-risk environment (think factories or warehouses), or if you have over five employees. For more information on the legal requirements within the UK, read one of our recent blog posts - ‘ Do You Legally Have to Have a First Aider at Work? ’.

Can You Fail a First Aid at Work Course?

Although it doesn’t happen often, you can fail a First Aid at Work course. If you don’t demonstrate sufficient knowledge, or you fail an exam, you may have to resit part, or all, of the training course. If you choose to get certified for first aid online with HSE Docs, you’ll be able to resit the end of module exams as often as needed. You’ll also have unlimited access to the course materials to revise topics where necessary.

Is it Difficult to Learn First Aid?

It isn’t difficult to learn first aid. Although course material is complex, your tutors, whether online or in person, will give you the best possible advice and techniques that will stick with you if you ever encounter an emergency situation. If you want to expand on the knowledge gained during your training course, there are plenty of helpful resources that are widely available online.

How Often Should You Do First Aid Training?

First aid training certificates are only valid for three years, so you should retrain as needed to maintain an up-to-date certification. This could be every three years, however, guidance recommends taking a refresher course annually.

Retraining will help you stay up to date with the latest legislations and laws, as well as best practices and techniques. By retraining frequently, you will also build up your knowledge and confidence in what to do in emergency situations.

Why is First Aid Important in the Workplace?

It is a legal requirement, under the Health and Safety Regulations from 1981 , to have adequate and appropriate personnel so that employees are taken care of if taken ill or injured. Not only is it a legal requirement, but first aid training in the workplace comes with benefits such as increased staff morale, reduced number of accidents, and creating a positive culture.

If you are keen to find out more about the benefits of first aid training for your workplace, you might enjoy our recent blog post . In the post linked, we discuss the benefits of first aid training and how many people should be trained in first aid in your workplace.

About First Aid at Work Course

This awareness level training course is intended for any staff member who would like to review or gain an awareness of first aid procedures. It works through a variety of first aid situations and looks at the recommended best response. The purpose of this training is to provide a thorough understanding of safety measures and an effective approach in case of an emergency.

While this course does provide an awareness of first aid, it is not a substitute for practical, competency-based training. The government recommends that qualified first aiders review, or refresh, their training at least once per year. Online first aid courses are designed to help fulfil this recommendation.

Why Is First Aid at Work Training Important?

Nearly 1.7 million people suffer from work-related illnesses and 0.4 million workers sustain a non-fatal injury every year, according to the  Health and Safety Executive   (HSE)

Employers have a legal duty under the  Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981  to:

  • Arrange appropriate first aid equipment
  • Arrange appropriate first aid facilities
  • Arrange skilled first aid personnel
  • Inform and educate workers on the first-aid arrangements

Employers must provide appropriate and sufficient training to their staff to help them meet compliance and work competently in an emergency. This workplace first aid course is provided fully online. It reviews vital information that first aiders must be aware of.

Your obligation regarding First Aid at Work

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, employers must provide acceptable and applicable first aid provision in the workplace. This is to ensure that workers receive immediate attention if they become injured or ill at work.

As part of their duties, employers must undertake an adequate risk assessment to recognise the first aid needs within the work premises. They should use this risk assessment to determine what level of first aid cover is required for their operations. Cover will include having the correct number of first aiders on site, providing an adequate number of first aid kits and providing required levels of first aider training.

Employers are also required to ensure that their first aid provisions are frequently reviewed and efficient to guarantee they remain applicable at work and during any changes in circumstances.

Training for all staff must also be provided to make sure everyone is aware of where first aid kits are located and know who the designated first aiders are at work. This information should be displayed in common locations on the premises, including the areas with a high risk of accidents or injuries.

First aid at work training offered to the workforce must be appropriate and sufficient as per the legal requirements to avoid any incident. This may include adequately training the staff on how to perform introductory life support, such as CPR and how to use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) if available.

Additionally, employers and responsible persons are required to ensure that they comply with all safety legislation and guidelines relating to first aid at work. This includes keeping up to date with any changes in these legislations, reviewing their first aid provisions and providing first aider courses on a regular base to assure that they remain operative and effective

Russian defence ministry says Ukraine poisoned two Moscow-installed governors

Pjotr Sauer

Russia’s defence ministry said on Monday that Ukraine previously poisoned the Moscow-installed governors of Ukraine’s Kherson and Luhansk regions, though both were still alive.

In an online briefing, Moscow said Ukraine poisoned Moscow-appointed Kherson head Vladimir Saldo in August 2022 and Luhansk governor Leonid Pasechnik in December 2023.

Kherson and Luhansk regions were among four Ukrainian provinces that Russia declared it had annexed in September 2022, even though it did not fully control any of them.

Both Russian and Ukranian media previously reported Saldo’s poisoning.

Russian-installed authorities in Kherson said in August 2022 that Saldo had fallen sick, but did not say that he had been poisoned. Saldo has since returned to public prominence in the Russian-controlled part of Kherson region.

According to unconfirmed reports, Saldo could have been poisoned by his chef.

Pasechnik’s alleged poisoning has not been previously reported. The defence ministry said he was “severely poisoned with phenolic compounds’.

On 11 December, less than a week after his alleged poisoning, Pasechnik was shown at a press conference in Moscow and appeared healthy.

There have been numerous Ukrainian attacks targeting Moscow-installed puppet officials since Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Closing summary

The White House could be prepared to send Ukraine long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (Atacms) if Congress approves a new funding package, NBC News reported .

The Red Cross said it was trying to find out what happened to 23,000 people who have disappeared over the course of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was seeking to determine whether they had been captured, killed or had lost contact after fleeing their homes,

European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , has won the backing of her German centre-right party for a second term, putting her in a strong position to clinch another five years running the European Union’s executive body.

Ukrainian troops are facing “heavy fire” from Russian forces in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, a Ukrainian army spokesperson was quoted by AFP as saying . It comes after Russia said it had taken full control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka , its biggest gain since capturing Bakhmut last May, after a retreat by Ukrainian troops.

Ukraine’s military said it shot down two more Russian warplanes used to drop highly destructive guided aerial bombs on Kyiv’s troops, army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said . The destroyed planes were an Su-34 fighter-bomber and an Su-35 fighter, Syrskyi wrote on Telegram. Over the weekend, Ukraine said it shot down three Russian Su-34s and one Su-35.

Yulia Navalnaya , the widow of Alexei Navalny, said she would continue the work of the Russian opposition leader as she accused Vladimir Putin of killing him. “I want to live in a free Russia, I want to build a free Russia,” Navalnaya said. “Vladimir Putin killed my husband,” she continued, adding that she would work with the Russian people to battle with the Kremlin to create a new Russia. “By killing Alexei, Putin killed half of me - half of my heart and half of my soul,” Navalnaya said. Navalny’s mother and his lawyers were not allowed into the morgue in the Russian town of Salekhard , near the prison colony where authorities said he died, Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh , said earlier .

Speaking on his way into the summit of foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, Estonia’s foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna , called Vladimir Putin a “murderer” and said Ukraine urgently needs more ammunition.

The Kremlin said that the west’s reaction to Alexei Navalny’s death was “absolutely unacceptable”. “We consider it absolutely unacceptable to make such, well, frankly obnoxious statements,” the Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters.

Austria’s defence minister, Klaudia Tanner , announced the procurement of 225 Pandur armoured personnel carriers for around €1.8bn (£1.5bn). The procurement is “an investment in the future, the security and the Austrian economy,” Tanner said during a press conference .

Belgium’s foreign minister, Hadja Lahbib , has called on the EU to develop an army amid increasing nervousness about Russia’s capacity to defeat Ukraine.

Journalists at Mediazona , a Russian independent media outlet, together with BBC Russia, confirmed the names of over 44,000 Russian soldiers who have been killed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago.

Tests on Alexei Navalny’s body will take 14 days to complete, Ivan Zhdanov, an ally of the late Russian opposition leader, said on Monday, citing an investigator.

Earlier on Monday, Navalny’s aides said his mother and his lawyers had not been allowed into the morgue in the Russian town of Salekhard near the prison colony where authorities said he had died.

In London, a Foreign Office minister is shortly expected to make a statement in the House of Commons following the death of Alexei Navalny , No 10 has said. You can follow all of the latest UK political coverage in this blog .

European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , has vowed to defend democracy from those who sought to destroy it as she won the backing from German conservatives for another five-year term running the EU’s executive body (see earlier post at 12.50 for more details).

“The most important thing is democracy, the rule of law that we defend and the peace that we have together,” von der Leyen said at a news conference in Berlin.

She said her election campaign wanted to make it clear to Vladimir Putin and far-right parties in Europe that “democracy in Europe is in their way”.

“They want to destroy it, they want to destroy Europe and that is why it is so important that people help to ensure that their Europe is preserved,” she said.

Biden administration considering supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles - report

The US outlet reported:

After months of requests from Ukrainian officials, the Biden administration is working toward providing Ukraine with powerful new long-range ballistic missiles, according to two US officials. Late last year, the US began to supply Ukraine with Army Tactical Missile Systems, known as Atacms, but so far it has provided only the older medium-range Atacms. Now, the U.S. is leaning toward sending the longer-range version of the missile, the officials said, which would allow Ukraine to strike farther inside the Russian-held Crimean Peninsula. But US funding for arms shipments to Ukraine remains uncertain because of opposition from former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies in Congress. Last week the Senate passed a $95bn foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. But it’s not clear whether or when the GOP-controlled House will vote on the measure or whether it would survive the vote… Defence officials told NBC News that the US has a limited inventory of Atacms and that it is not likely to send them to Ukraine without money to replenish US stockpiles. If Congress approves more funding for Ukraine, the US could include the long-range Atacms in one of the first packages of military aid paid for with that money, according to the two US officials. The US also has ammunition and artillery ready to send to Ukraine immediately if the funding is approved, the officials added.

Germany is to propose a new batch of sanctions against Russia over the death of Alexei Navalny .

“We have seen the brutal force with which the Russian president represses his own citizens who take to the streets to demonstrate for freedom or write about it in newspapers,” the German foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, said on Monday. “We will propose new sanctions in light of the death of Alexei Navalny.”

Sanctions could include the use of frozen Russian assets, a move that would be in addition to a levy Belgium exacts from interest on immobilised cash reserves.

I am proposing to EU Member States to rename our Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime the "Navalny Regime". To honour his memory, for his name to be written on the work of the EU in the defence of human rights around the world. pic.twitter.com/yIGfpcDWBE — Josep Borrell Fontelles (@JosepBorrellF) February 19, 2024

The death of the Russian opposition leader in a penal colony cast a long shadow over the Brussels meeting, with the EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, proposing that the EU’s global human rights sanctions regime be renamed.

You can read the full story by the Guardian’s Brussels correspondent, Lisa O’Carroll , here:

Eleven Ukrainian children were setting off from Russia to Ukraine on Monday to be reunited with their families in the latest transfer under a Qatari-mediated scheme.

The children, aged between two and 16, were hosted at the Qatari embassy in Moscow on Monday ahead of a long journey via Belarus which should see them cross into northwestern Ukraine on Tuesday, AFP reports.

This latest operation reportedly includes several children with special medical needs, including two aged five and six who have chronic conditions.
